Parking On A Ramp
2012-01-17 23:59:00 Happy new year! I have just bought my first automatic car (Honda CRV) and have some troubles when parking at home. We live on an Island where flooding occurs every now and then For this reason our house is built 1 meter above ground level, and a small parking area is at the same level. To get up the

New parking meter and toll rates: Thanks, Mayor Daley!
2012-01-02 14:39:00 Mayor Richard M. Daley: the gift that keeps on giving. Even if you did not resolve to continue getting nickeled and dimed by local government in 2012, you will. Due to the 75 year deal Mayor Daley signed (prior to ramming it through the spineless City Council), parking meter rates increase today. In the loop–... Read more »
Thank God Chicago is raising parking rates!
2011-12-30 14:39:00 Crain’s reported yesterday that Chicago is raising the rates on street parking next week by up to 17% in some areas. Predictably, this news is being met with disgust by most residents of the city. However, as far as I’m concerned this action is long overdue. I’ve been praying for this all year. This is... Mayor Quan Announces Oakland Parking Holiday - Under Mayor Harris, Oakland
2011-12-17 22:53:00 Oakland Mayor Jean Quan announced that today and next Saturday are “parking holidays” for Oakland. Personally, this is too little too late. When Elihu Harris was Oakland’s Mayor, the office had something called the “Shop Oakland” campaign, which started back in November, before Thanksgiving, and was a major, city-wide marketing event. It featured not just (Read More...)

Ain't no free parking in this town
2011-05-17 02:35:00 I stopped by one of my former favorite haunts the other day -- Margate Park. When I only had one child and we lived not too far from there, I used to bundle up my wee baby and stroll her down to the toddler playgroup. I met some of my best friends in that playgroup. Even though we don't really live within walking distance anymore, I still have a fondness for Margate Park. We love the playground there, too. The other day -- remember when it was summer? I stopped by there on the way home from dropping my eldest at school. My little one, I realized, had never been to Margate Park! So we stopped off to enjoy the...

Parking at the Malls

2010-06-24 16:00:00 (Terrence Antonio James/ Tribune)J.J. McFadden occasionally will circle Wrigleyville for so long he'll end up parking in a tow zone on Addison Street only to have to wake up before 7 a.m. to repark legally."It can get pretty infuriating," said McFadden, 31, who has lived in the area for seven years. "I used to figure there was a value-added tax to living in Chicago that amounts to about two parking tickets a year."Whether it's adjusting a work schedule around Cubs night games, deciphering tow zones and parking permits, or circling the block for half an hour looking for a good spot, it takes a certain savviness to be a car owner in Wrigleyville....

The Parking Ticket Geek Is A 'Smart Mouth'
2010-03-10 07:44:00 The Parking Ticket Geek is not smart. Anyone who could rack up a few hundred parking tickets over two decades, is obviously no Einstein. But the Geek certainly has opinions, flirting with obnoxiousness when inflicting his views upon others. One guesses that may be the reason he's been invited to be a panelist this Thursday at noon for Smart Mouth, because it's certainly not for his brains. Smart Mouth is a free program produced by the McCormick Freedom Project that hosts a panel of local "movers and shakers" (their overly generous quote, not mine) discussing current events. It's loosely based on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect we're told. This time around the discussion is going to center around parking and driving...
Conspiracy, Intrigue, Heartbreak Pepper Parking Ticket Lawsuit
2010-03-06 04:06:00 This story gets weirder and weirder. The Tribune's Problem Solver columnist Jon Yates has been following the case of Mark Geinosky for over a year. He's the gentleman that received 24 phantom parking tickets written for addresses his vehicle has never been and "coincidentally" by the same two police officers. The internal police investigation is still going on, but is supposed to wrap up soon. But in the meantime, Geinosky has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the City of Chicago, and two Chicago police officers. The suit is accusing the cops of some sort of conspiracy with Geinosky's ex-wife to banish him into parking ticket hell. Geinosky was even receiving parking tickets AFTER the vehicle was sold and...
Ask The Parking Ticket Geek
2010-02-25 08:17:00 Hi Geek, I received a notice for 2 parking tickets I supposedly received in 1991. Although the address on the tickets are close to where I lived at that time I had a private parking space so I really doubt they are valid. What's the legality of this? Isn't there some sort of statute of limitations on parking tickets? I think the total fine for the 2 tickets now stands at $120.00. Not only can I not afford the fine, I truly believe these tickets were never valid. I don't ever remember receiving a notice before this. Come on! 18 years? I'd appreciate your opinion, Larry Larry- 18 years huh? How pathetic on the city's part. And incredible it's taken...
Ald. Rugai Says 'Cheese' For Parking Tickets
2010-02-16 06:24:00 If one Chicago alderwoman gets her way, all parking tickets will have to come with photographic evidence. According to the Sun-Times, Ald. Ginger Rugai (19th) is pushing an ordinance that would require everyone writing parking tickets for the city to provide photographic evidence--including the police. Currently, only Parking Enforcement Aides (PEA) and SERCO (a private parking enforcement contractor) utilize the handheld ticketing computers called AutoCITEs which have photographic abilities. But cops , Traffic Management Aides and a handful of others use traditional handwritten ticket books. Rugai feels that the millions of dollars invested in outfitting all ticket writers with AutoCITEs would be beneficial to motorists as the photos would provide evidence that could be used to challenge the violation. In...
Snowstorm Parking & Driving Advisory
2010-02-10 07:13:00 With all that white stuff hitting the Chicagoland area the past several hours, it will certainly have an effect on driving and parking.Avoid Overnight Parking On Major Streets Chicagoans should be on alert for the city to call for a 2" ban on all major thoroughfares. The odds are against it as, despite the 2" designation on the signs, and the fact that more than 2" of snow has already covered the ground, Streets & Sanitation rarely triggers the ban. In fact, no 2" ban was initiated the previous two winters according to Streets & Sanitation spokesperson Matt Smith. However, we strongly advise you not to avoid parking overnight on major thoroughfares, or for prolonged period of times during daytime...
Ask The Parking Ticket Geek
2010-02-09 16:17:00 Hello Geek, My guest received a ticket for parking in a permit parking zone (383) last night at 12:39am. My guest clearly had a valid guest permit displayed, and I was present when she filled it out and displayed it at 7:15pm. The issue might have been when she filled out the day, she mistakenly thought the day was the 21st, but then I told her it was the 20th and she corrected it. Did the PEA think she was trying to change the date and re-use a pass (which she was not)? Why would someone want to advance a day? It makes no sense as to how the person could issue a ticket. Photos were taken of the permit...
Redeye Discusses Parking Meter Rate Increases With Drivers
2010-02-03 06:02:00 In today's RedEye, reporter Kyra Kyles spent a day talking to drivers in the South Loop, Bronzeville, and Roseland to see how they're reacting to the new meter rates. Kyles' article seems to come to the conclusion that many people are avoiding parking and paying the new meter rates. In one case, one man drives with his buddy into shopping neighborhoods, gets dropped off and has his friend circle the block for a few minutes while he runs into a store or two. Other drivers are refusing to pay 25 cents to run in for a few minutes to get their half caf, double-expresso soy latte with a shot of raspberry. Others park in non-metered spots or risk tickets by...
Politics & Parking Meters
2010-02-01 15:50:00 With tomorrow being election day in Illinois, it seemed prudent to post some interesting facts via the Chicago Reader about some of the parties and politicians involved in Chicago's parking meter lease deal and the controversies which ensued. We make no apologies for the respect or the drooling praise we have for the work Mick Dumke and Ben Jorvasky do over at the Reader covering local politics. The two writers, as part of some broader election coverage, pointed out a few interesting tidbits about the quiet effects of Chicago's parking meter lease deal on local politics. The Reader reports employees at William Blair, the consulting company that came up with the idea for the meter lease deal, sold it to...
Chicago's Parking Meter Deal A 'Sucessful Fiasco'
2010-02-01 04:22:00 Former Indianapolis Mayor Steven Goldsmith weighs in with his thoughts on Chicago's parking meter lease deal in a piece for the ultra-wonky Governing Magazine. Goldsmith basically feels the deal should have been a no-brainer. In his opinion the money was good, and he supports the concept of privatization. But, because of mistakes of implementation, there's been a political backlash and, according to Goldsmith, was a "cause célèbre for opponents of privatization nationwide." His opinion piece basically rehashes the deal and the main implementation problems over the past year, but he fails to address how the Mayor jammed the deal down Chicago's throat like force feeding a duck for the purposes of producing delicious foie gras. Read Goldsmith's full piece "Successful...

Oregon Man Arrested For Feeding Strangers' Parking Meters
2010-01-21 06:46:00 A Good Samaritan in Eugene, OR had a run in with a parking enforcement officer for feeding the parking meters of complete strangers. 30 year old Matt Bonds got angry with an enforcement agent writing tickets on the street, parked his truck, fed his meter and then, armed with a pocketful of change, plunked coins into a block full of parking meters. But saving a bunch of drivers from an expensive expired meter ticket, brought three cops out to slap the cuffs and drag him off to jail. He was charged with "harassment and obstruction of governmental administration." It sounds oddly reminiscent of a run in this writer had with a Parking Enforcement Aide last spring. Remember, it's not...

The complaint states that the bumper was a violation of a local ordinance prohibiting "obstructions in the Public Right of Way." The complaint also states that the Citgo was negligent when it, among other things, failed to paint or properly mark the obstruction. Read the complaint after the jump.
