DALLAS CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS DEE AND CHARLES WYLY THEATRE
2009-04-19 18:04:00
"Dallas Theater Center (DTC) is recognized as one of the country?s few innovative theater companies located outside the triumvirate of New York, Chicago, and Seattle. Ironically, the company?s artistic success can be attributed largely to its provisional accommodations in a dilapidated, galvanized metal shed. Free of the need to respect its architectural surroundings, the group regularly challenged its art?s physical conventions. The company?s makeshift residence also allowed it to be multi-form: throughout its season, DTC routinely reconfigured its stage. Imagining a new home for DTC posed two distinct challenges. First, like a restaurant renovation which polishes out the character that made the original establishment successful, the creation of a pristine venue threatened to stultify the environment that had facilitated the company?s originality." to find out more...Image & Passage from http://www.rex-ny.com/work/wyly--theatre/

Spelling Bee the musical
2008-01-11 23:15:00
By Bill Rosenfield No one can predict where a musical comes from. Classic novels and popular movies have been sources, and real life experiences have found themselves musicalized – but a Spelling Bee? Well, why not? For Bill Finn, it began with a phone call from his friend, playwright Wendy Wasserstein, whose weekend nanny had been appearing in a comedy troupe called The Farm on the Lower East Side.  An improvised piece that the group performed, entitled C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, seemed to her to be the perfect gem for a musical comedy. After watching a videotape of it, Finn agreed. With the enlistment of Rachel Sheinkin, they set about developing the piece originally conceived by Rebecca Feldman, into a full-length fully developed show. read more
