The Catholic bishop’s website is worried about the ecology and corruption, but not Lady Gaga. Even ...

santa ana, cagayan: the northeastern corner of the philippines
2012-05-03 17:31:00
The laidback municipality of Santa Ana in the province of Cagayan is located approximately 642 kilometers from Metro Manila. This is indicated by a lonely kilometer marker which is propped right across the Santa Ana fish port. You may also likely miss this spot though, but the 12-hour bus trip to Santa Ana is already an indication by itself that you are traveling to a very remote destination in the Philippines. But despite the long bus travel, it is fast becoming a tourist destination in the country. There are many adventures that can be had, beyond its vast rice fields. For one, it is dubbed as the "Game Fishing Mecca of the Philippines" due to its proximity to major bodies of water. Local and foreign aficionados of the sport gather at Santa Ana for the various competitions that are held there every year. However, my friends and I traveled to Santa Ana last month not for the swordfishes, trevallys (talakitok) and mahi-mahis (dorado), but for a different kind of marine creat...

20 Reasons Why I Hate The Philippines
2012-03-18 08:58:00
This guy gave you 20. Here's one more... The entire time the "20 Things I Hate About The Philippines" video went viral, I was on vacation in Dumangas, Iloilo and Guimaras. These places are slightly remote, most of the time with no cel signal and I was on vacation, meaning no time for TV. I was there to immerse myself in the culture and absorb as much as I could while I was there. No time for television. I had no idea of what was going on in Manila and the news until I set back foot on city soil. The time I spent in Iloilo and Guimaras was to say the least, wonderful. Sadly, landing back in Manila was a whole different story. I have been living in Manila BY CHOICE for all my 32 years. My dad has been living in the States since I was 5. When I was about 12, my dad and my grandparents tried to relocate me so I could live with my dad and continue my education there. With as much vigor as a 12 year old could possibly muster, I refused, stood my ground and continued to live in M...

simunul, tawi-tawi: the birthplace of islam in the philippines
2012-02-28 16:54:00
Sheikh Karimul Makhdum, an Arab missionary, reached Simunul, Tawi-tawi more than one hundred years before Ferdinand Magellan stumbled upon Cebu. He also arrived in a manner that would probably beat the Portuguese navigator in terms of style and spectacle. The sarsilya (local histories) say that Makhdum was aboard a metal boat but when he saw the island from afar, he walked the remaining distance on water. He then built a mosque at Tubig Indangan in 1380 AD and thus planted the very seed of Islam in the Philippines. A more modern building stands there this day, but inside the mosque are the four original pillars made out of Ipil wood. Makhdum, which is said to have more than one supernatural ability, carried these heavy posts from the forest all the way to the shore, like they were just merely matchsticks. Little is know about what the missionary did after he planted the first Philippine mosque. He was laid to rest in Tawi-tawi, although the exact location is still being disp...

“The Bourne Legacy” in a 45-day shoot in the Philippines; Film release
2012-01-30 08:25:00
The hit franchise known for trotting around the globe, from France and Italy to India and Morocco, is adding a new location to its roster: the Philippines. Universal Pictures’ “The Bourne Legacy,” the fourth movie based on the Robert Ludlum novels, started filming in Manila, the country’s capital, two weeks ago. Scheduled to be released in theaters Aug. 3, the latest installment in the spy series was written and is being directed by Tony Gilroy — who penned the first three films -– and will be the first without Matt Damon playing the title role. Bourne is not a character in the new movie. Jeremy Renner, instead, will portray an agent in the same line of business as Bourne, with Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton co-starring. The production, which has a budget of more than $100 million, will spend about 45 days in the Philippines. Scenes have already been shot in New York and Alberta, Canada, since filming began last September. via Los Angeles Times by Dima Alzayat ...
