Service providers are surely seeing large companies and businesses as huge revenue sources with respect to 3G services. At a time when 4G launch rumours are doing the rounds on the internet in India, many companies are yet to make the jump to 3G services. This maybe because of initial apprehension, unavailability of capable handsets, high prices or the simple reason of a company not needing 3G. A study conducted by IMRB revealed that 85% of their sample audience was aware of 3G and nearly 75% felt that it would help their businesses. Halan goes on to describe various situations under which a businesses might benefit from 3G services. Rural Tech – Irrigation Systems Controlled By Mobile Phones
2011-06-09 06:23:00 The best part about technology isn’t how it makes the already hassle free urban life easier but how it impacts the rural sector. Technological advancements have been very slow in trickling down to the rural population. There are a lot of problems in rural areas which if solved through technology, would make lives in villages much easier. Agriculture has been the principle occupation in Indian villages from ancient times. Since there haven’t been a lot of advancements in the agricultural sector, a simple task like switching off the irrigation systems also has a lot of danger associated with it. In many villages, night is only the time when uninterrupted power supple is available. So when a farmer has to either switch on or switch off the irrigation system at this time, he has to walk all the way to the fields and at times encounter snakes as well. M.P. Rajkumar, a 45 year old engineer from Tamil Nadu chose to tackle this problem and automate the whole process of switc...

Google Testing Video Chat For Android phones
2011-04-26 15:51:00 Despite having the infrastructure for video chat since 2008 (at a time when android was in its infancy) google never really capitalised on this advantage by introducing video chat in smartphones before anyone else. They didn’t even bother to update their desktop client to include video chat. I hate having to open up gmail to use all the new features like group chat, video calling which Google chose to not include in its desktop counterpart. This seemed to be changing when google announced honeycomb, it had inbuilt video chat with google talk. It seemed obvious that video chat would be making its way to phones in the next release of android, but that didn’t happen although some evidences were found in the Android 2.3 SDK. Instead google took time, and has apparently chosen to introduce video calling at Google IO 2011. This tweet from a samsung employee indicates that google will introduce video chat for gingerbread phones at google IO in May Just had a video call u...

By repeating this procedure for several light-paths, the cataracts size, position, density, and scattering profile are estimated.Created by the MIT Media Lab, Camera Culture's research group with Vitor Pamplona, Erick Passos, Jan Zizka, Manuel M. Oliveira, Everett Lawson, Esteban Clua and Ramesh Raskar, CATRA utilizes a forward scattering technique, which allows the user to respond to what they visually experience.Their device scans the lens section by section. More Than 300,000 Android Phones Activated Daily, Reports Google
2010-12-10 06:00:00 For the second time in a row, Andy Rubin, VP, Engineering at Google resorted to Twitter to make another announcement. He tweeted, “There are over 300,000 Android phones activated each day,”. Earlier he tweeted on Apple’s remark that Android has stopped. This is a huge figure considering the earlier announcement by Google CEO Eric Schmidt in October that the company activated about 200,000 Android devices daily. This is a clear sign of Android beginning to rule the mobile market of the world. It could also become the top mobile OS in the world by next year. The coming has been so fast and analysts have indicated it to be a fivefold increase from what it was last year, possibly giving its competitors a reason to think again. Rubin had already unveiled the new Google Samsung Nexus S Smartphone running Android 2.3. He called it a “pure Android, pure Google phone”. Again, he demonstrated a Motorola Tablet prototype, which is an Android “Honeycomb” tablet. The 10-inch...

Mobile Phones – What Indian Teenagers Can’t Live Without!
2010-12-07 09:40:00 Every person in this world has his or her most valuable asset in life, so called the thing that he or she cannot live without. Indian teenagers today seem to have a big obsession for Mobile phones that these have become their most valuable assets in life. Literally, they cannot imagine a life without mobile phones. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) conducted a “Toy to Tool” survey, under its ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation (ASDF) on adolescents of 15-18 years of age and found that 88% of them possess mobile phones as against 40% of teenagers aged 13-15 years who actually use them. Also 66 % of them between 16- 18 years of age have a tendency to flaunt a mobile phone while at school tuition or public places. This trendy yet bizarre tendency is due to factors such as more pampering by parents, more pocket money, no day-to-day parental control, urbanization and western influence. Conducted across Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Hyderabad, Indore, Pat...

RockeTalk beats Facebook, Twitter and Orkut on Mobile Phones
2010-10-27 07:39:00 Mobile Analytics company Informate has released a report on Indian mobile usage and Mobile social networking. What they found, may come as a surprise to many. I may have killed the suspense with the title of this post. Nevertheless, the numbers are interesting. Using data over a period of six months, the study finds that RockeTalk is the most used mobile social networking application. Orkut comes in at a respectable second. Followed by Qeep, Facebook and Twitter. Airtel reported recently that almost 80% of data usage happens in non metros. If this pattern of usage is similar on other networks, the findings are not too surprising given that the popularity of Facebook and Twitter is mainly restricted to Metros as of now. But yes, It certainly did surprise me! That the application is designed specifically for mobile usage perhaps explains its popularity. With over 350 million page views per month, 3.2 million Indian users and over 100,000 communities the network draws its main tract...

Skype app now available for Android phones
2010-10-07 07:38:00 Skype has finally announced its app for wide range of Android phones. However, the app is available for smartphones powered by Android 2.1 or higher version of the OS. That’s a bit strange considering the large number of smartphones with lower version of Android OS still in use, at least in India. This coveted app should have ideally been introduced long back owing to the increasing acceptance of Android OS. But it’s better late than never. At present Skype for Android supports features which include Instant messaging (IM), Group IM, Skype-to-Skype calling, Calling phones and mobiles, Synchronizing with Android phone book ,Call forwarding , Receiving Skype calls and calls to Online Numbers. Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G are free. However, operator data charges may apply while using Skype over a 3G or WiFi mobile data connection. Fe...
