Russia is the Tsar of Pirates
2012-01-19 15:30:00 Wireless Waffle has talked extensively about pirate radio in the past, from short-wave music stations, to Brazilian sat-jackers. But it seems that, of all the nations on the planet, the Russians hold the baton for being the biggest pirates of them all. This story begins when reading the latest intruder report from the IARU Region 1 Monitoring System. The report indicated that there had been an intrusion into the 80 metre amateur band between 3.5 and 3.6 MHz by Russian pirate stations running AM. Now historically the Voice of Korea (the North Korean broadcaster) has been transmitting in the 80 metre band (or the 75 metre band as it's called in in North America) on 3560 kHz in AM and the immediate assumption was that these new signals couldn't possibly be Russian pirates, but must be the Voice of Korea and perhaps a few other stations trying to jam it. The IARU report, however, says that the carriers are very unstable and that the modulation is voices in Russian. So the only...

Portland Pirates 4, Connecticut Whale 2
2012-01-19 04:03:00 Portland, ME, January 18, 2012 ? The Connecticut Whale?s losing streak stretched to seven games Wednesday night, as they lost a 4-2 decision to the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Connecticut (19-15-2-4, 44 pts.) did maintain first place in the Northeast Division despite the loss, remaining two points ahead of the Albany Devils, who lost 5-4 at home to the Norfolk Admirals. Four different Pirates scored in the victory for Portland, Andy Miele had two assists, and Justin Pogge made 22 saves. Erik Christensen and Scott Tanski scored the Whale goals, and Kris Newbury assisted on both. The Whale appeared to get a break only 1:51 into the first period when Alexandre Bolduc, playing his first game of the season after missing Portland?s first 39 games due to injury, got a four-minute butt-ending penalty. Not only did Connecticut not score on the long man-advantage, but they gave up a freak shorthanded goal at 5:23. Whale starting goaltender Chad Johnson ...

2012-01-03 03:09:00 By Brian Ring Portland, ME, January 2, 2012 - The Connecticut Whale were defeated in overtime, 5-4, by the Portland Pirates Monday afternoon in Maine. The Whale led by three goals at one point, and had a 4-3 lead as late as four minutes left in the third period. The Pirates? Kelsey Tessier scored twice for the Whale, and Francois Bouchard and Andre Deveaux each added two assists. Reebok/AHL Player of the Week Kris Newbury gave the Whale a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds into the opening period, after Portland goaltender Justin Pogge (16 saves) kicked out a Brendan Bell shot. The rebound found Newbury?s stick, and the Whale scoring leader fired it in for his 13th goal of the season, also extending a Whale season-high point-scoring streak to eight games. 2011-11-24 05:01:00 By Brian Ring Hartford, CT, November 23, 2011 - Brendan Bell?s second overtime goal in less than a week led the Connecticut Whale to a 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates Wednesday night in Hartford. Whale defenseman Tim Erixon assisted on all three of the team?s goals in the game, helping Connecticut to their third straight victory, all three wins coming either in overtime or the shootout. For the second straight game, the Whale rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win. ?It speaks to their character that they?re willing to fight right to the end there,? said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. ?These guys push hard and pay the price to get the job done.? The first period was scoreless, despite the Whale being outshot, 13-8, by the Pirates. Movie Review - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (**)
2011-05-25 03:55:00 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES. 141 mins. PG-13. Directed by Rob Marshall. Written by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio.Alright, I'm just going to come right out and say it: the first Pirates of the Caribbean was just okay. Good even. A fun summer movie. But not great. Certainly not worthy of three inferior sequels, each one worse than the last. These Pirates movies are prime examples of the law of diminishing returns. Yes, Johnny Depp was a hoot as Capt. Jack Sparrow, and earned himself a surprise Oscar nom in the process. But whatever charm and offbeat moxie Depp once brought to the role has long since vanished. We've seen him go to the eccentric well one too...

2011-05-16 19:00:00 So...ahem - this weekend's weather wasn't exactly conducive for sailing, but neither was the weekend before it and I saw a bunch of boats out near Belmont Harbor while running along the lakefront. But the good weather is coming - just you wait! Today is sunny and chilly - but look at this deceptively pretty pic today from the NOAA GLERL webcam at the Chicago-Harrison-Dever Crib! Yea the cribs are those round buildings that you see way out from the Lakeshore. They have a purpose! Water cribs are offshore structures that collect water from close to the bottom of a lake to supply a pumping station onshore. The name crib is derived from the function of the structure--to surround...

The Pirates and a Barbecue
2010-07-11 21:00:00 Pirates are a menace you know! As a young lad, and I?m certainly no spring chicken now although I can still show these modern-day pale faced youngsters a thing or two, I wanted to be a pirate but well, that career never passed muster. So here I am now with a story to tell from my distant past! I was the proud Master of a brand new bulk carrier recently out of China and on our maiden voyage we headed down from ?yellow peril? country where the ship had been built and with a cargo of coal bound for Genoa, Italy. We passed Indonesia and up the Malacca Straits which was certainly pirate territory but at the time of the incident we happened to be in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Our fine vessel was plodding along at about 8 knots, at least 700 miles from land and although my company and the media could never quite grasp how pirates happened to be so far from the safety of the shores believe me it was an ordeal that I would never want to repeat. Prior to the incident pirates had been h...

Cubs Live Game Thread: How HAAAAAARRRRRRRD Can Beating The Pirates Be?
2010-06-30 02:33:00 "My favorite French existentialist? Jean Paul Sarrrrrrrrtre!" I'm a bit late this evening. My deepest apologies. Tonight, the Cubs will try AGAIN to beat the Pirates, one of the worst teams in baseball, who were the proud owners of a 17-game road losing streak until. . . well, until last night. Ted Lilly is on the mound for the Cubs, and he's sporting a sparkling 2-runs in support from his teammates per outing. It's a good thing Z went nuts on his teammates first, because it was only a matter of time before Ted went over the edge. And he's WAY scarier than Z. If you didn't get a chance to vote in my super-fun 7th-inning stretch poll, please...

A Sweep of the Pirates Still Counts....I'm Pretty Sure of This
2010-06-18 04:42:00 It's easy to see why the Pirates are struggling. Erm...uh...let me start that again. It's easy to see why the Pirates are hurtling at the speed of sound toward the epicenter of eternal baseball damnation. They have two good hitters, and zero scary ones, their pitching staff can't overpower anyone (26th in the league in strikeout rate), and they play worse defense than the 1919 White Sox did in the World Series (3rd most errors in the league). Watching this hapless, destitute tragedy of a baseball team for three days was harrowing. I am now thoroughly in favor of revenue sharing and a hard salary cap, if only for the children of Pittsburgh; even if they don't ever see a playoff game, so that they could maybe witness a game in August that has some playoff implications. Breath-taking sports poverty aside, the White Sox did well in this series. They certainly didn't blow the Pirates out, and definitely had a few interesting moments, but looked in control and outclassed the ...

That Was Actually Pretty Important - Sox Top Pirates 6-4
2010-06-16 04:36:00 This is of course not to say that the White Sox' Tuesday night match-up with the Pirates was in some way a big game, or a monumental clash between two major league powers, or even a crucial moment of the season. In many ways this game was completely irrelevant, which is clear in the way it was treated. The first pitch came at the odd start time of 6:05 CT, it was relegated to Comcast Sports Net Plus because the major channel was carrying the Cubs game, and WGN must have had extra episodes of "Life Unexpected" to air (It's like Juno meets the Gilmore Girls meets low production values!). If you had a satellite feed, that probably cut out during the rainstorm, and froze the game on some random image from the 4th inning for 30 minutes straight, and both espn.com and mlb.com gamecasts provided plenty of glitches. Oh, and Game 6 of the NBA Finals was on. Unless you're Andrew McCutchen's dad, chances are your will to watch the White Sox play the worst team in the National League w...
Chicago Cubs Wednesday Headlines: Could You Just Beat the F@ck!ng Pirates A
2010-06-02 14:51:00 At least they played Xavier Nady tonight, right? It looks as though the Cubs have decided to revert to the old days of playing the Pirates. By old days, I mean the Andy Van Slyke, Bobby Bonilla, Barry Bonds, Mike Lavalliere days. In those days, they couldn't beat Pittsburgh, and these days, they can't beat Pittsburgh.Ted Lilly, who pitched well all night, gave up Neil Walker's first major-league home run, a 2-run shot to left-center in the eighth inning, as the Pirates wiped out a 2-1 deficit. Like so many other games this season, it was hard to pin this one on the pitchers, and Piniella is tired of talking about that. "Look, I'm not going to talk about it...

On the radio, Pat said that the Pirates have scored a run in the first inning in each of the five games this year. I think Lou Piniella said all there is to say.''Boy, that big hit is really elusive,'' said Piniella, who's running out of answers. ''What are we gonna do? We've tried a little bit of everything.''While fans of the Cubs are descending into madness, it appears as though the team has already found a happy place there.Said Byrd: ''We're not worried. In fact, he had an RBI sac fly. But with the game on the line for the second straight day, our slumping third baseman couldn't produce. After popping out with a man on first to end Tuesday's game, Ramirez struck out on three pitches Wednesday, stranding Byrd at second. Chicago Cubs Thursday Headlines: Come On, They're the Pirates
2010-05-06 13:23:00 The Cubs offense that scintillated us over the weekend disappeared on the way to Pittsburgh. Even facing someone who was 0-5 with a 12.57 ERA couldn't help them Wednesday night. Sad Lou, any thoughts?"We better be able to win with 2 runs once in awhile," said manager Lou Piniella, whose team fell to 13-15. "I thought the way we swung the bats at the end of this homestand we'd come on the road, and it would be a nice carry-over. We still got four games, but the first two games didn't start the right way."(snip)"What are you going to do?" Piniella said. "Look, I don't know. I don't have answers for this. Somali Pirates Engage U.S. Warship: Win Their 2nd Dumb Ass Award

This, their third encounter with a U.S. Navy warship in less than two weeks, either Somali Pirates have a death wish or they are just stupid as spit. Somali Pirates Try To Hijack Navy Ship
