NFL Week 12 Preview: Pittsburgh Steelers (-10 ˝) @ Kansas City Chiefs
2011-11-24 05:52:00
Sports Betting Overview It is correct to have the Steelers be favorites in this game because, logic would suggest, that the Steelers will win this game and by a significant margin. But the Kansas City Chiefs are so hard to figure out this season that almost anything could happen in this game. With quarterback Matt Cassel injured, the Chiefs have turned to the tuft of hair known as Tyler Palko to try and win games. But Palko is not playing the role of able backup. He is unpredictable, undisciplined and makes really bad decisions in the face of just the slightest pressure. In the week 11 loss to the New England Patriots, Palko throw three interceptions without countering with a single touchdown pass. Will we see rookie Ricky Stanzi this week? Considering how bad Palko is playing and the luck that other 2011 rookie quarterbacks have had, we just may see the rookie in week 12. The price per head sports fans in Pittsburgh have seen the Steelers develop from an unpredictable bunch on...
In The Red Zone: New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers Preview ? Week
2011-10-28 12:00:00
This Week The New England Patriots visit the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Stadium on Sunday at 4:15 p.m. The Patriots (5-1) are 2-1 on the road, 0-0 against the AFC North and 4-1 in the AFC conference.  The Steelers (5-2) are 3-0 at the Ketchup Bottle, 0-0 vs. the AFC East and 3-2 against the AFC conference. The Line/Prediction As of Thursday the line on the game from Yahoo! Sports have the Patriots at minus 2 1/2.  The over under is 52. My Prediction is Patriots 30, Steelers, 28.  Take the points (Steelers) and take the over.  I am 3-2-1 against the spread and 5 of 6 on calling the over/under in 2011. Tickets The Steelers are reporting the game as a sell out. Tickets to the game, if available, can be purchased through Ticketmaster.  You can check the availability here. Getting to the Game If you?re lucky enough to be going to the game in Pittsburgh make sure you check out the links. Here is the up to date weather forecast for the game from weather.com for ...

Cubs Season Ends After Devastating 5-4 Loss to Pittsburgh

Not all will be lost from the 2011 squad, however. The Cubs organization announced late Sunday that the 2011 team will have a statue outside the ballpark.
Walker's Slam Keys Pittsburgh's Opening Day Win Over Cubs
2011-04-02 09:27:00
It's hard to say that in a 162 game season, that one game will set the tone for the rest of the year. But with Cubs fans holding such low expectations heading into 2011, Friday afternoon's tilt with the Pittsburgh Pirates was right along the lines of what they expected. For the most part, despite the cold and rainy atmosphere at Wrigley Field, Opening Day for the Cubs started off on a high note.Chicago grabbed a 1-0 lead early on, when the Cubs demonstrated some aggressive baserunning in the first inning. After a throwing error by Pedro Alvarez, Starlin Castro was sent home, barely beating out the throw for the Chicago lead.Ryan Dempster cruised threw his first few innings of work....

Yakking Jets Need More YAC in Pittsburgh
2011-01-21 00:18:00
Yakking Jets Need More YAC in PittsburghBy Jon Wagner-Sr. Writer-Football Reporters OnlineMark Sanchez?s first pass set the tone last Sunday in New England. It was a short, 2nd-and-6 pass to the left for wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, who turned the reception into a 16-yard gain to the New England 48 yard-line.And, on just the second play of the New York Jets? monumental divisional playoff upset win over the New England Patriots, the Jets had moved into New England territory for the first of four straight times to start the game. The Jets sorely needed that, after suffering an humiliating 45-3 embarrassment on the same field just six weeks earlier. As Important as linebacker David Harris? interception breaking Tom Brady?s NFL-record streak of 339 consecutive pass attempts without a pick on New England?s opening possession, the Jets simply being on the Patriots? side of the field so often to begin the game was a definite tone setter and collective a psychological lift for Gang Green ...
Mike Tomlin A Twitter Trend As Pittsburgh Turnovers Cause Baltimore Lead
2011-01-16 00:54:00
While the Pittsburgh Steeler's offense is better than that of the Baltimore Ravens in this AFC First Round Divisional Playoff, it's not enough to overcome two turnovers. Now, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin is a Twitter Trend as of this writing, and his team's behind, 7 to 21 for the visiting Ravens at halftime. And... A mid-blog-post UPDATE: the Steelers' offense just scored with 50 seconds elapsed time to start the 3rd Quarter. The Twitter Tweets on Tomlin are, in part, due to his resemblance of the actor Omar Epps (Tomlin is on the left; Epps on the right) and the TV close ups of his expressions during the first half of the game. But now that the Steelers are making a game of it, guess what?  Tomlin's no longer a Twitter Trend. LOL! Tomlin fell off the board and was replaced by Steelers Tight End Heath Miller, who scored the second touchdown to put the Black and Gold to just seven down from a tie. steelers Pittsburgh Steelers Touchdown Heath Miller! 14 -...
Preview for UIC vs. Pittsburgh
2010-11-10 05:48:00
UIC takes on Pittsburgh on Wednesday night in the opening game of Chicago's college basketball season. Thankfully this game is on ESPN3, so you can watch it if you're interested in seeing how the Flames fare against a high-caliber squad. (And happen to have a cable provider kind enough to give you the access online.)Don't worry if Howard Moore's team struggles a bit during the game. The Panthers are one of the best teams in the country this season. I'm sure that after the scare Rhode Island put into Pittsburgh that Jamie Dixon is going to have his team prepared for Wednesday's contest.Still, there are some things worth watching....
Defensive grades for the Notre Dame-Pittsburgh game
2010-10-13 10:00:00
Funny, I would have thought a unit sporting only three consistently contributing rotation members might be on the downturn near the halfway point of the season. Perhaps never running around in the backfield all season saved their energy, because this was their best performance of the season. There were better results against Boston College, but Pitt actually has some measure of talent. Pressure was consistent on Tino Sunseri all game, every line starter registered a hit on the quarterback, and Ian Williams and Sean Cwynar both had tackles for loss. It's all I can do to not wonder what grade I'd give if the strong rush on the final drive got the credit for forcing a game-ending intentional grounding the endzone. Ah, bad reffing.
Offensive grades for the Notre Dame-Pittsburgh game
2010-10-13 08:32:00
Odd to think a game that involved the offense walking into a humidor for the entire 3rd quarter could have been one of Dayne's best efforts of the season. The game plan seemed a lot more simplified, Crist threw a lot of quick outs and slants, which drew in the defense and allowed him to see a lot of single coverage when he did throw down the field. For his part, Dayne threw the deep ball fairly well, particularly in long completions to TJ Jones and Michael Floyd (Floyd's was called back), and he didn't make any of the bonehead reads that marred previous contests. Still....he just ain't right. 39 passes for 242 yards still isn't very efficient, he missed receivers with inaccuracy and heinously obvious miscommunication at key moments. At least his inability to develop a rapport with Floyd seems like something that shouldn't persist for any reason. Dayne's cagey 10-yard TD run where he ducked the rush, froze the coverage with a pump fake, then raced up the sideline for a s...
Brian Kelly Post-Pittsburgh Press Conference Wrap-up
2010-10-12 06:15:00
Brian Kelly is a pretty optimistic guy...in the press at least. I'm not sure how much all his humorously out-sized wailing on the sidelines should be weighed into value judgments of his day-to-day demeanor. But if you thought Kells was a bucket of candy-coated sunshine wrapped in lavender cardigans made of marshmallows after triumphs over soon-to-be-bowl-ineligible Purdue and Boston College, then you're nowhere near prepared for the optimism coming after a triumph against a...well...certainly not good...but a talented Pittsburgh team hopelessly doomed by poor utilization and horrible coaching decisions.
Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh: Brutally Honest Game Preview
2010-10-08 21:19:00
With three of their first four against ranked teams, Notre Dame had their "echoes woken up" on them right off the bat. But at least they had some desert last week in the form of rival Boston College. Having a 2-3 record after consuming the meat and potatoes of their schedule isn't catastrophic. But now you can "shake down the thunder" because the cupcakes are coming! And with the remaining schedule, 7-5 in 2010 still seems very doable. This week, they welcome Dave Wannstedt (a begrudgingly familiar site to Chicago Bears fans) and his 2-2 Pittsburgh Panthers to Notre Dame Stadium. Wanny has always been like a football version of a sitcom stock character. "Oh, that wacky neighbor Wanny!...
Pittsburgh vs. Notre Dame week - Brian Kelly press conference week wrap-up
2010-10-07 06:20:00
It seems like not a day goes by that Brian Kelly isn't giving another press conference, and man it doesn't seem like a day goes by where I don't look at the 'Brian Kelly Mid-Week Press Conference' slot in the weekly On Down The Line schedule, see it empty, and think "Aw crap....time to try to glean insight from an hour of coachspeak." Sometimes, writing a blog about your favorite college football team is only kinda the greatest thing in the world.
Ms. Hairston Goes To Pittsburgh
2010-03-12 09:06:00
Warns Pittsburgh About Parking Meter Lease Deal Alderman Leslie Hairston (5th) was out of her Chicago office Thursday. Ms. Hairston decided to spend the day in, of all places, Pittsburgh. The alderman, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, was in town at the behest of Pittsburgh City Councilman Bill Peduto, to share her views on Chicago's experience with leasing its parking meter system. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ms. Hairston, who flew to the Steel City on her own dime, warned the Pittsburgh city council of the pitfalls of privatizing the city's parking garages and/or parking meter system. Ald. Hairston, one of only five aldermen who opposed Chicago's lease deal, spared none of the bloody details of what most view as...

Chicago vs. Pittsburgh
2009-09-17 10:12:00
We're moving the weekly Bears game pick to Thursday morning on a permanent basis.  It allows a solid day for debating the upcoming week's ballgame and lets me use Friday and Saturday to update whatever news might be pertinent.  Off we go...Your 2009 Chicago BearsoverPittsburgh SteelersWhy do I like the Chicago Bears this week?I always like the Chicago Bears. There is no possible way Ron Turner and the offensive staff are expecting to successfully block the best pass rush in the game.  With Matt Forte and Greg Olsen as superior underneath options, one hopes that we'll see an extensive array of checkdowns and screens to keep the linebackers off the attack. One area in which the Bears' passing game did not struggle...

Brunch at Legume Bistro, Pittsburgh, PA
2009-07-31 15:35:00
I came across some pictures from a while back when a bunch of us went to Legume Bistro for Sunday brunch. Legume Bistro is located at 1113 S. Braddock Ave in the Regent Square area of Pittsburgh, PA. They are a small family operated restaurant. What caught our attention was their small but unique menu offering Italian and French inspired American cuisine. Their dinner menus change every day and they post them on their website by 5pm. Their brunch menu also varies week to week. The dishes they offer depend on the ingredients available to them. Most of the ingredients they use are organic and locally grown, with the exception of a few delicious ingredients that might not be available locally.Normally, their brunch runs from 10am to 2pm, but one that day they had to close early to prepare for a special dinner. Here's what we had for brunch that day. For a beverage, I ordered the French press coffee.I couldn't help but notice how adorable this cream container was. The waiter told us th...

Lunch at Salonika Gyros, Pittsburgh, PA
2009-05-01 01:00:00
I came across some pictures of delicious chicken on my laptop the other day. It brought back memories from one of my past trips to Pittsburgh. Salonika Gyros is a fast food Greek restaurant that looks like a typical pizza shop, but also has a bar in the back. It is located at 133 6th St, in the downtown Pittsburgh area. When I recently googled this restaurant, I came across this. So according to the Pittsburgh City Paper, they were voted the 3rd Best Greek Restaurant in Pittsburgh by their readers. I thought that was cool, until I noticed that P.F. Chang's was voted as the 3rd Best Chinese Restaurant. I chucked for a bit. Anyway, this gyro place was also featured here earlier this month.During one of my past visit in Pittsburgh, my buddy and I made a trip to Salonika Gyros. He's talked a lot about this delicious chicken and rice special they offer during the weekdays, while supplies last. Therefore, we decided to head over for this lunch special. Here it is! 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers Schedule
2009-04-15 14:57:00
The NFL released its 2009 schedule Tuesday evening (was it really necessary to have a television special for this?), one of my favorite days of the year. I always study the schedules, not only for football but for other sports, and try to make plans accordingly. Last year, I called the Jacksonville Jaguars and friends and family immediately after the schedule was released in order to make arrangements to see the Steelers in north Florida. Anyway, enough about me and my travel plans. Here is the schedule for your 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers:Thursday, Sept. 10 ? vs. Tennessee, 8:30 p.m. (NBC)Sunday, Sept. 20 - at Chicago, 4:15 p.m. (CBS)Sunday, Sept. 27 - at Cincinnati, 1 p.m. (CBS)Sunday, Oct. 4 ? vs. San Diego, 8:20 p.m. (NBC)Sunday, Oct. 11 - at Detroit, 1 p.m. (CBS)Sunday, Oct. 18 ? vs. Cleveland, 1 p.m. (CBS)Sunday, Oct. 25 ? vs. Minnesota, 4:15 p.m. (FOX)Nov. 1 - ByeMonday, Nov. 9 - at Denver, 8:30 p.m. (ESPN)Sunday, Nov. 15 ? vs. Cincinnati, 1 p.m. (CBS)Sunday, Nov. 22 - at Kans...
The Pensblog Wins the Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament
2009-03-08 21:09:00
Congratulations to The Pensblog for winning the (first?) Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament by defeating Mondesi?s House 67.9%-32.1% in the championship. I do want to address some of the comments that took place during the championship round. Certainly not everyone has to like everyone else?s blog or the comments on the blogs. However, there is no reason to disparage the blogs themselves simply because of the amount of time the bloggers spend writing for your enjoyment and to express their own thoughts. As for the two finalists, The Pensblog is the most influential blog in Pittsburgh and has the most passionate following. WWGRD was everywhere last year, and each Penguins game post on The Pensblog receives hundreds of comments. Meanwhile, Mondesi?s House covers all Pittsburgh sports better than any other Pittsburgh blog. The Terrible Towel pictures and videos featured prior to February?s Super Bowl were incredible and demonstrated the amount of MH readers there are nationw...
Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament Championship
2009-03-04 14:00:00
Well, we made it to the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Championship! If you had to guess who would make the finals before the tournament started, I think you would predict The Pens Blog and Mondesi's House. These blogs are likely the most read and most influential of all the Pittsburgh sports blogs. Both The Pens Blog and Mondesi's House are regularly linked to by national and international sports blogs and certainly earned their places in the finals based on the outstanding posts and information they provide and have provided over the years. The Pens Blog reached the finals on the strength of a 66.8%-33.2% victory over Behind the Steel Curtain. BSC dominated its division but ran into a seemingly unstoappable force. In the other semi-final, Mondesi's House and Pittsburgh Sports and Mini Ponies were close over the first day of voting, but Mondesi's House pulled away with a huge Tuesday afternoon winning 56.6% to 43.4%. Congratulations to both Behind the Steel Curtain and PSAMP f...
Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament ? Final Four
2009-03-02 14:00:00
Welcome to the Final Four of the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! I think this may be the first tournament ever where all the #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. I?m actually a little disappointed that there were no Cinderellas, but the people have cast their ballots and the top seeds earned their place in the Final Four. Before the voting begins, let?s look back at the Elite Eight.Behind the Steel Curtain had a relatively easy run in the Sammy Khalifa division until this round where they held off the final all-Pirate blog in the tournament Where Have You Gone Andy Van Slyke by a 53.3%-46.7% margin. Behind the Steel Curtain now faces The Pens Blog who handled Empty Netters by earning three of every four votes in this match-up. I really thought that this would be much closer, but I guess not. Based on how this tournament has gone so far, The Pens Blog appears to be the favorite to win it all. With Pitt as the #1 basketball team in the country last week, it makes sense th...
Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament - Elite Eight
2009-02-25 14:00:00
Welcome to the Elite Eight of the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! I don?t know about you, but I am really enjoying this tournament. Although I have heard of all of the blogs prior to the tournament, this has been the first time I have regularly read some of them. I don?t think Pittsburgh sports fans realize how lucky we are to have such in depth coverage of the Steelers, Penguins, Pirates and Pitt. If you haven?t done so already, check out each of the Pittsburgh sports blogs in the tournament as well as those linked on the sidebar. The Sweet 16 round was terrific. #1 seeds Behind the Steel Curtain and The Pens Blog rolled to easy victories as Nice Pick Cowher awoke the sleeping giant. The other top seeds, Pittsburgh Sports and Mini Ponies (PSAMP) and Mondesi?s House, withheld big comeback attempts by Faceoff Factor and Bucs Dugout respectively. I don?t think we can have any closer match-ups than Pitt Blather vs. The Confluence (51%-49%) and Blog ?n? Gold vs. PensBurg...
Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament - Sweet 16
2009-02-23 14:00:00
Welcome to the Sweet 16 round of the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! Before we proceed with the voting, I want to address a comment from the first round. An anonymous commenter wrote, "voting is VERY easily rigged. Anyone can vote an unlimited number of times by changing a certain setting in your browser." Personally, I?m not smart enough to figure out how to change browser settings, but I?m sure that many of you can. I can?t believe that I even need to write this, but there is no need to cheat and vote multiple times. We?re not Montreal fans trying to get their players into the NHL All-Star Game. This is a silly blog contest in an attempt to highlight some of the best Pittsburgh sports blogs. The winner gets absolutely nothing. The idea of this is to be fun, so let?s keep it that way. Thank you.A brief recap of the first round: the top seeds in the Demetreus Gore, Jock Callander and Rich Erenberg divisions all won. The only upsets occurred in the always turbulent...
PIttsburgh Sports Blog Tournament - Round 1
2009-02-19 15:01:00
Welcome to the first ever Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! As I mentioned on Monday, my main motivation behind doing this is to try to create a thorough list of the best blogs that cover and discuss Pittsburgh sports. I also hope that this to be something fun and that no one takes things too seriously. The first round voting starts now (assuming that the survey software works OK) and ends on Friday, February 20 at 8:00pm Eastern time. If nothing else, enjoy the logo!A few items that I didn't address when I posted the 32-blog bracket yesterday. The seedings were partially based on Ballhype rankings and partially on my perspective on the blogs' overall popularity. I also created four divisions named for four of my favorite Pittsburgh sports athletes: Sammy Khalifa, Jock Callander, Demetreus Gore and Rich Erenberg.Let the voting begin! (One vote per person, please. We don't want this to be like the NHL All-Star voting.)Sammy Khalifa Division1. Behind the Steel Curtain v...
Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament Bracket
2009-02-18 22:13:00
Here is the bracket for the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament:Unless you have 20/10 vision, you probably need to click on the bracket to see the match-ups. The bracket itself isn't pretty, but all I have is Microsoft Word. I'm sure that any 8th grader could make a nicer bracket.Let me apologize if I missed your blog. I tried to pick the best 31 Pittsburgh sports-related blogs out there (plus my blog) and I?m sure that I missed a few. As I mentioned on Monday, my motivation is to try to create a compendium of the best blogs that cover and discuss Pittsburgh sports. I also included a set of ground rules of what blogs would be included and excluded. If the polling software works correctly, I hope to begin the first round of voting tomorrow (Thursday).Feel free to discuss the match-ups and the toughest/easiest divisions.
Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament
2009-02-16 15:06:00
Welcome to the first ever (that I know of) Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! My main motivation behind doing this is to try to create a thorough list of the best blogs that cover and discuss Pittsburgh sports. I think there is a special Pittsburgh sports blog community out there, but not everyone knows about everyone else. I hope to change that and perhaps even encourage some additional collaboration between some very talented writers. I also want this to be something fun and not some type of fight to end scenario from a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie (Sudden Death, perhaps). A few ground rules:1. The blog must be in existence for at least one year. There are a lot of bloggers out there who get burned out quickly, so this recognizes the folks who have persevered. This is not to discourage the new bloggers out there. Blogs such as Three River Sports, Steelers Today and Pesonen and The Pens are already must-reads and should make the cut if I decide to have another tournamen...

I thought everything in Breezewood was open 365 days a year. Meanwhile, there must have been 200 people at Sheetz.- I?m always amazed by the amount of Steelers jerseys and clothing worn throughout the city. This happens on a daily basis, not just on game days. How were the Steelers only #3 in team loyalty this year?

Pittsburgh Sports Memories
2008-10-21 20:09:00
As part of Mondesi's House Readers Rule Week, I was invited to answer the Pittsburgh-centric questions listed below. I think that this will be posted on the site sometime Tuesday (update: it has been posted; click on the link above), but I wanted to share my responses here anyway.1. What is your all-time most memorable moment in Pittsburgh sports history? On Tuesday, May 8, 2001, I was living in Columbus, Ohio and watched game six of the Eastern conference semi-finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres with some friends. After the Penguins won in overtime, the ESPN announcers innocently stated that there were still tickets available for game seven. My friends and I looked at each other, decided to call the Sabres? ticket office and managed to buy tickets in the last row of the arena. We all left work around noon on Thursday, drove the 325 or so miles to Buffalo and watched live as the Penguins defeated the Sabres in overtime when Darius Kasparaitis beat Dominik H...

The New York Times has a great article titled "36 Hours in Pittsburgh" in this weekend?s travel section. The title is self-explanatory, but here?s a sample:Pittsburgh has undergone a striking renaissance from a down-and-out smokestack to a gleaming cultural oasis. But old stereotypes die hard, and Pittsburgh probably doesn?t make many people?s short list for a cosmopolitan getaway. Too bad, because this city of 89 distinct neighborhoods is a cool and ? dare I say, hip?city. There are great restaurants, excellent shopping, breakthrough galleries and prestigious museums. The convergence of three rivers and surrounding green hills also make it a surprisingly pretty urban setting. And if the Pirates are in town, head over to PNC Park. Besides the game, the ballpark offers a great excuse to explore downtown Pittsburgh and the river views. The article continues by discussing things to do such as visiting the Andy Warhol Museum and Nationality Rooms at Pitt?s Cathedral of Learning and plac...
