From CBC | Technology & Science News: An international team of scientists led by a Canadian researcher has discovered three new planets circling a star they say is 130 light years away. The discovery is a crucial step toward finding a habitable planet like Earth, said astrophysi
Hurry! Life Must Form Quickly on Some Planets
2008-10-23 16:31:00
From SPACE.com: Planets around small mass stars may only have a billion-year window during which life can form. This is the implication of research into the tidal forces that can pull a planet into a tighter orbit around a star. The so-called habitable zone around a star is loos

Vatican: life on other planets a possibility
2008-05-15 04:07:00
Rev Jose Gabriel Funes, head of the Vatican Observatory and a scientific adviser to the Pope believes there is a strong possibility that life exists on other planets. The life forms Funes has in mind doesn't exclude humanoid types, even a race more advanced than humanity."Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, there can be other beings, even intelligent, created by God. This is not in contrast with our faith because we can't put limits on God's creative freedom."Funes sees no contradiction in belief in the existence of such beings and faith in his God. He even speculates that a good name for them might be "brother extraterrestial". No mention if they might regard such a label as sexist. It's unlikely that any alien civilization could possibly outdo the Vatican when it comes to out-and-out weirdness. The present eccentric residing on the throne of St Peter is low key compared to some of the acts that preceded him - take a glance at this list of former Popes."Sightin...

SEE not infer. The technology does not use glass lenses nor reflective mirrors but an advanced form of a pinhole camera, the "pinhole" technique is called Fresnel zone plates. New Scientist article. The technical hurdles would be tricky but nothing unbelievable. Essentially we would need to launch two spacecraft.: one is the "lens" and one is the "receptor".  The focal point using the Fresnel method is kilometers away from the lense, ergo the two spacecraft solution. Go read the whole article, just fascinating. Feeds right into this post: Planet Hunting, The Next Generation - The Lyot Project

Mykro Planets is a pure 1-st person multiplayer action shooter, but in space. It's not a space simulator, it's a free-movement game (like in classic shooters) without acceleration or inertia, with strafes in XZ plane (and strafe along Y axis). I know that it can be strange for space-sim fans, but in that case the game is much more dynamic and available for the wide public.Play MycroPlanets Now

Nearby star should harbor detectable, Earth-like planets
2008-05-02 12:02:00
A rocky planet similar to Earth may be orbiting one of our nearest stellar neighbors and could be detected using existing techniques, according to a new study led by astronomers at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The closest stars to our Sun are in the three-star system called Alpha Centauri, a popular destination for interstellar travel in works of science fiction. UCSC graduate student Javiera Guedes used computer simulations of planet formation to show that terrestrial planets are likely to have formed around the star Alpha Centauri B and to be orbiting in the "habitable zone" where liquid water can exist on the planet's surface. The researchers then showed that such planets could be observed using a dedicated telescope. "If they exist, we can observe them," said Guedes, who is the first author of a paper describing the new findings. The paper has been accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal. Coauthor Gregory Laughlin, professor of astronomy and astrophysi...

Brown Dwarfs -New Link Between Stars & Planets
2008-04-11 17:14:00
A cold brown about 40 light-years from our solar system might represent a new class of objects that are a missing link between planets and stars. The spent star floats freely in space, not bound to a star. Its mass is somewhere between 15 and 30 times that of Jupiter. And it is about 660 degrees Fahrenheit (350 Celsius), cooler than any other known object in its class. The mass of brown dwarfs is usually less than 70 Jupiter masses. A brown dwarf spends its lifetime getting colder and colder in contrast to a star like our sun, which spends most of its lifetime burning hydrogen and keeping a constant internal temperature,The brown dwarf, named , was found by an international team using the Canada France Hawaii Telescope and Gemini North Telescope, both located in Hawaii, and the a European Southern Observatory telescope in Chile. The newly-discovered brown dwarf, CFBDS J005910.83-011401.3, looks much more like a giant planet than the known classes of brown dwarfs, both because of its l...

Earth Like Planets Not Rare in Milky Way
2008-02-19 20:12:00
Using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, a team of scientists found that at least 20 percent, and possibly the majority (as many as 60 percent) of stars similar to the sun are candidates for forming rocky planets. The Legacy Science Program set out to determine whether planetary systems like ours are common or rare in the Milky Way. What they found is that many, perhaps even most, of the sun-like stars in our galaxy could well harbor Earth-like planets. The Spitzer team found that at least 1 in 5 neighboring solar-mass stars have the right conditions to have formed terrestrial worlds. This new research indicates that worlds with potential for life may be relatively common. The research appears in Astrophysical Journal Letters, and the findings were also presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The research team included University of Arizona astronomer Michael Meyer and colleagues John Carpenter of the California Institute of Technolog...
New Study: Habitable Planets Are Common

More than half of the sunlike stars in the galaxy could have terrestrial planets with the potential to harbor life, a new study suggests. The research, announced yesterday at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston, Massachusetts, is just one of a set of recent findings that suggest the roster of potential life-harboring worlds is huge?even in our own solar system. linkphoto

Many, perhaps most, nearby sun-like stars may form rocky planets
2008-02-18 02:51:00
Astronomers have discovered that terrestrial planets might form around many, if not most, of the nearby sun-like stars in the disk of our galaxy. These new results suggest that worlds with potential for life might be more common than thought.

2 Planets 170 Light Years from Earth Cause Planetary Collision
2008-01-21 05:51:00
Two planets may have crashed together recently, resulting in one planet that's weirdly hot for its size. The planet 2M1207B, 170 light years from Earth, is 1300 degrees Celsius, despite being smaller than Saturn, judging from its infrared radiation. Young planets are generally hotter than older planets, but such a small planet should have cooled off quickly. So University of Arizona astronomers claim another planet crashed head-on into it, and gave us this action-packed reconstruction.

I was able to shoot on the Santa Maria down on the waterfront, which was a rare occurrence since the ship is always locked up. While I was taking pictures of it, two guys pulled up in a pickup and told me they were doing maintenance on it for 15min and I can take some pics on the ship if I wanted and I couldn't pass that up. Rocky extrasolar planets thought to be half frozen and half scorched might instead rock back and forth, creating large swaths of twilight with temperatures suitable for life.
