Sugababes - Catlights And Spotlights(2008)
2009-09-23 15:22:00
With a title reflecting the band's reputation for infighting, the Sugababes' sixth album of original material is described as having a funkier and darker sound than previous releases, with extra...
Brother can you spare a dime
2009-09-19 22:36:00
http://www.nelsonguirado.com/me-dia/BrotherCanyouSpareaDime-bin-gcrosby.mp3My favorite columnist, Mark Steyn, mentioned "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" in his National Review column, which I've posted below. Steyn contrasts the lyrics of the song with the modern British attitude towards work. What the singer of "Brother" wants is the ability to work again, the "restoration of dignity," while the modern British dole-takers wish to avoid work. The song was written at a time when calling somebody 'non-productive" would produce shame within the target. Today, for many societies, producing is optional, if not a bad thing altogether. Why should people produce in the first place? Isn't production a source of pollution? People have always had a sense of societal obligations between ruler and ruled, classes, Church and state. These change over time. Brits may have, at one time, cared about the glory of the empire or spreading their beliefs around the world. The able-bodied were expecte...

The Whitest Boy Alive - Rules
2009-03-08 18:33:00
Norwegian singer Erlend Øye has one of the most effortlessly smooth voices in the underground pop world, and any project he’s involved with seems to play to that strength. The latest such effort is The Whitest Boy Alive’s second album, Rules. It’s a well-refined collection of jazz-infused pop with the cool flow of ...
Handsome Furs - Face Control
2009-03-03 22:55:00
Handsome Furs’ first effort Plague Park, released two years ago, was all too quickly dismissed as a hobby album for Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner, the result of a man taking up model airplane painting to distract him from the day-job. There was good reasoning for this- It was, after all, made with his then-girlfriend and ...
Fucked Up - The Chemistry of Common Life
2009-03-02 20:11:00
Fucked Up is the type of music your mother, Mary Whitehouse and the NME warned you about. This is the devil’s music, screamed at you by a bald-headed fat bloke called Pink Eyes who makes Wayne Coyne look sane, Frank Gallows look like a youth worker and Les Savy Fav look like the best bet ...
Asobi Seksu - Hush
2009-03-01 23:51:00
Drawing back the viscid curtain that surrounded 2006’s Citrus, Asobi Seksu’s Hush releases the band from its gooey shoegaze cocoon, a transformation that frees up their sound but also leaves it strangely bare. The result is an album with a broader range, more exploratory but less interesting and without the same sense of coherence, like ...
Ry Cooder - The Ry Cooder Anthology: The UFO Has Landed
2009-03-01 20:33:00
While Ry Cooder is primarily known for his haunting, bluesy scores for countless films, the artist was also a pretty accomplished adult contemporary pop artist in the ?70s before the movies claimed him as one of their own. And while we?ve previously had the Music By Ry Cooder soundtrack anthology back in the ?90s, the ...
Circus
2008-12-29 08:50:00
Circus is the seventh album by Britney Spears. It rolls into town on the heels of an MTV VMA awards sweep, where Britney walked away with three Moonmen awards for 'Video of the Year', 'Best Female' and 'Best Pop Video' for 'Piece Of Me'. Circus is the follow up to her critically well received album, Blackout, just in in time for her 27th birthday. The lead single, 'Womanizer' (produced by the up and coming Atlanta production team The Outsyders) has already created a frenzy amongst Britney fantaics, radio and the media alike-underscoring Britney's continued reign as one of the Queens of Pop.

Popnoname - Surrounded by Weather (2008)
2008-11-23 22:23:00
The Sea and Cake - Car Alarm
2008-11-14 01:08:00
One of the pitfalls of crafting a sound that is so wonderfully distinct is that, unless you make a conscious effort to continually build upon that sound and strive for something even more inventive, you drift into the dark territory of self-parody. With their eighth full-length album, Car Alarm, The Sea and Cake must have ...
Ben Folds - Way To Normal
2008-10-29 06:54:00
As a songwriter Ben Folds is an omnivore, utilizing a number of different styles from the linear narrative to more abstract musings. While his approaches and moods vary, they can often fall under two umbrella types: the heartbreaking, melancholic confessor of personal ballads like Brick and Smoke, and the comic, sarcastic observer of upbeat rockers ...
Shugo Tokumaru - Exit
2008-10-25 04:46:00
From the time his Japanese / US debut Night Piece began to receive rare but rave reviews in 2004 to his second album, L.S.T’s slightly more international 2006 release on New Zealand’s Lil Chief Records (The Brunettes, The Ruby Suns), Shugo Tokumaru has largely remained a mystery of sorts. Now, with his recent (and first ...

The National - Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers
2008-10-13 14:38:00
The National - Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers
Los Planetas - Una Semana en el Motor de un Autobús
2008-10-10 12:28:00
Explosions in The Sky - All of a Sudden, I miss Everyone
2008-10-09 15:23:00
Impresionante. All of a Sudden, I Miss Everyone, no te va a dejar indiferente, tanto si cono...
Covers
2008-10-08 02:57:00
Covers is the cd that James Taylor fans have been anticipating for years. Recorded live with his full band in a barn in Massachusetts that was transformed into a studio, the album is a treasury of songs he has performed live over the years, but never recorded. It is an American songbook of tunes made famous by artists as varied Buddy Holly, The Dixie Chicks, The Temptations, Leonard Cohen, George Jones and Eddie Cochran, but embraced and interpreted by James Taylor in a way that makes each one his own. It is a significant work by one of the greatest artists of his generation, which pays tribute to classic American songs from Broadway to Nashville, Detroit to Memphis and across all boundaries. Covers is in itself a classic James Taylor recording.

James Yorkston - When The Haar Rolls In
2008-09-01 19:49:00
Tall, avuncular and with the reassuringly tweedy air of a financially insecure Kelsey Grammar, James Yorkston is the quietly rising future of folk-tinged British songwriters. While still a member of East Neuk’s Fence Collective, a loose conglomeration of songwriterly souls that also spawned KT Tunstall, King Creosote and The Beta Band, Yorkston’s forthcoming album, When ...
Ron Sexsmith - Exit Strategy Of The Soul
2008-08-31 21:36:00
Canadian Ron Sexsmith is one of those artists who never lets you down. His albums are consistantly great and his latest, Exit Strategy for the Soul, is no exception. He?s also one of those artists who?s destined to be on the periphery of things, never quite hitting the big time or popularity he deserves. In ...
Pop Levi - Never Never Love
2008-08-29 21:14:00
Pop Levi?s 2007 effort, The Return to Form Black Magick Party, was everything a pop album should be. Balancing infectiously sugar-coated rockers, hypnotic acid-blues dirges, it came across like T. Rex on a sugar high, minus the mysticism. Inexplicably, no one listened to it, and the album remained frustratingly under the radar. If there?s any ...
Harps & Angels
2008-08-26 10:45:00
Randy Newman's first studio album of all new material in nearly a decade is, by turns, hilarious, poignant and scathingly satirical. Harps and Angels often has an easy going Crescent City feel, with Newman on piano fronting a small combo and revealing, as Rolling Stone put it after the Carnegie Hall show, his serious love and study of the New Orleans piano tradition.
Xavier Rudd - Dark Shades of Blue
2008-08-25 20:51:00
There’s a long tradition of acoustic artists plugging in, and Australian singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd now joins an esteemed list that includes the likes of Dylan and DiFranco. With 2007’s White Moth as a stepping stone and touring partner and drummer Dave Tolley along for the ride, Rudd’s latest effort, Dark Shades of Blue, is richer ...

The School - Let It Slip EP
2008-08-24 16:13:00
Reviving a long forgotten sound is a flourishing band, simply called The School, that evoke feeling and passion in their love of all things ’60s. Fronting the Cardiff group is Liz Hunt, a woman with such an angelic voice that it becomes immediately addictive. Through observation of the musical talent, it’s easy to see that ...
They Came From The Stars I Saw Them - We Are All In The Gutter But Some Of
2008-08-13 04:03:00
This record is an electro-funk odyssey by They Came From The Stars I Saw Them, an outfit that aren?t ones to be held back by conventional approaches to music. This aural trip is sometimes engaging, sometimes rambling, but always characterful in a sprawling, spaced-out way. It takes a while for the ear to adjust to ...
POP: The Olympics are a Trap

Smoking Popes - Stay Down
2008-08-08 18:18:00
To say that fans have had to wait for the fourth Smoking Popes album of original material is an understatement. The beloved Chicago power pop band broke up shortly after the release of its last proper album, 1997?s ?Destination Failure,? reformed in 2005 and soon after began referencing imminent new studio material. The result, Stay ...
POP: Triumph at Comic-Con
2008-08-08 14:30:00
This one is sort of self explanatory. Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (from the Late Show with Conan O'Brien) goes to the San Diego Comic Convention and insults every person he sees. The best has to go to the Bomberman fan who is there to play Pokemon.
POP: Pot Dealer?s Tragic Choice Ended in Death
2008-08-07 14:30:00
It's not really funny, but it is ironic to know that marijuana has not ever killed a person... except when police are involved. This story is tragic and likely to make you angry. And an FYI: The baggy she was busted on weighed a quarter-pound which amounts to about 4 ounces. Rachel Hoffman was killed as an informant and her murderers were not apprehended until later. Anyone else think the police should be held on murder charges?

POP: Help Save the Bees
2008-08-02 14:30:00
I wholeheartedly agree that the drop in honey bee population should be considered a very grave situation. In fact I think it is more alarming than global warming, if it is not a symptom of it, and if not addressed we can expect some world class starvation.

POP: Help Save 1-800-Suicide

I had no idea this mess was even going on with all the other attacks on human rights that Bush has been committing. Sending police to a person's home instead of talking them through it. Is he trying to provoke jumpers? I don't know what could be possibly worse. Oh wait, that would be loss of confidentiality so that callers would be even more reluctant to have someone talk them out of it.

Wright's collaboration with Craig Street continues on The Orchard. One of the Boys
2008-06-21 11:56:00
Ever since the November 2007 digital release of the hilarious, zeitgeist-capturing single "Ur So Gay," Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Katy Perry has been wowing critics and fans alike (including the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna) with her big voice, sassy attitude, and feisty, confessional songs. Katy's debut album, One of the Boys, is a sharp, witty pop-rock gem filled with candid tales of neurotic ex-boyfriends ("Hot N Cold," "Ur So Gay"), crazy road trips with friends ("Waking Up in Vegas"), and figuring out who you are along the way (first single "I Kissed A Girl," "Fingerprints"). While the album displays Katy's feisty, girl-power swagger, it also reveals her more vulnerable side on such regretful ballads as "Lost," "I'm Still Breathing," and "Thinking of You." Although just 23, the Santa Barbara, CA-born native has been writing songs and playing guitar for several years, and possesses the flair and confidence of a veteran storyteller. Catch her in all her glory this su...

Take a real good look at this picture. This group goes by the name "Big Mama," which is their tongue-in-cheek response to those people whom have reduced them to mere background singers because they're "not pretty enough" to stand on stage to sing lead. Do YOU think they're pretty? I sure as hell do. And they can sing their heads off!Big Mama - Blossom (2007)Link 2Big Mama - For The People (2006)Link 2Big Mama - It's Unique (2005)Link 2If you don't listen to ANY other song within these four records, you GOT to check out "Woman!"
