After Winning Funding From Sequoia, Zaakpay Working On Two Projects Called
2012-05-15 09:26:00
Sequoia Capital has infused US$ 1 Million (@ Rs. 5 Crores) in online payment solutions provider Zaakpay.  The company plans to scale up its operations, including customer acquisition & working on the technology front. Though the company never publicly announced the VC funds, Sequoia has Zaakpay listed in the company portfolio list. Two main products Zaakpay has to rely on: Webpay & Bankpay. Webpay, functions as a web- payment gateway for e-commerce transactions. Apart from integration with newer technologies like Internet banking & cash cards, payment from Credit & Debit cards too, are part of it. The second product which is under development & yet to go live is Bankpay, which is supposed to help users better manage or automate one-time and recurring payments. From the Annals of Silly Obesity Projects
2012-05-01 23:14:00
One of the provisions of the stimulus bill and later the national healthcare law provided for grants from the federal government to local and state governments to prevent chronic diseases. These so-called “Communities Putting Prevention to Work” (CPPW) grants have been used to create gross and inaccurate anti-soda ads in New York and a separate ad campaign attacking soda in Philadelphia. Well, it seems like the “absurd” New York ads weren’t the only misspent money in the anti-obesity slush fund. The Washington Examiner reports that in Nashville, Tennessee CPPW money was used to–wait for it–spay and neuter dogs and cats. Why would they claim that neutering pets could fight obesity? Supposedly strays deter exercisers. Now, encouraging exercise and lifestyle physical activity are better than some possible alternative uses for the CPPW grants, but this particular grant strikes us as silly. (Personal responsibility should apply to pet ownership too, after all....

Goodbye RaceDriven.com Blog, hello ThinkingBrian.com and BrianVermette.com. Welcome readers to what is my final post on RaceDriven.com Blog. Just over 7 years ago, I started RaceDriven Blog as a project site for my portfolio, but the site has become so much more since then, it has become a successful and insightful blog for many. Over the last 7 years, RaceDriven has opened up several doors for me as well as allowed me to voice my opinion and be heard through my writing. However very recently, I have discovered that just like in life, things change. Simply put, I have changed and I have outgrown RaceDriven and in some ways blogging as well. And with that I feel that it is time for me to move on to the next project which are BrianVermette.com and more importantly ThinkingBrian.com, my blogstream (One part blog with large blurbs and one part stream with photography). TB is a blogstream with a good mix. I really don't know if ThinkingBrian is the next b...

Open Source Software To Be Used For E-Governance Projects
2011-07-08 06:09:00
The Economic Times carries a report on a draft policy which says all new E-Governance projects should use open source software on computers and attached devices. The Department of Information Technology which is behind the draft has put forward the draft to hardware manufacturers and others before finalizing it. A major benefit after this draft gets implemented is of course ‘saving money‘. Open source projects are available to use for absolutely no cost at all. In addition to that it would even give the implementing agencies control over their hardware and the ability to further customize it as per their needs. The report goes on to say that the Aadhar Project makes extensive use of Blackberry phones, a closed platform. It is ironic that the government has been taking steps to jeopardize the existence of Blackberry phones in India, and the same phones are being used in a very important government project. India has been a supporter of Free and Open source software...

The realities of LEED: Which condo projects followed through on their green
2010-09-03 23:03:00
The next time someone mentions "LEED certification" during a sales pitch, remember that you have access to the US Green Building Council's directory of certified projects. For all the condo projects out there that promoted their green features and their pursuit of LEED certification -- and there were a lot back in the day -- very few appear to have followed their plans through to completion. The only ones I recognized were: 340 on the Park: LEED Silver Parc Huron: LEED Gold River Village Pointe: LEED Certified (Basic) Keep in mind that developments are viewable in the directory only with the consent of their primary contacts, so it's possible that other condo developments have completed the LEED process but opted...

Enterprise mashups and de-risking software development projects
2010-02-06 08:41:00
One of the main uses of Encanvas and other enterprise mashup platforms is in custom software development. Traditionally, business software applications have been purchased as shrink-wrapped products that serve a specific process or functional business area. The fundamental problem of this approach is there are so many processes in a business.  Attempting to purchase a shrink-wrapped solution for every one of them is hugely expensive. Another problem is there's no guarantee that each of the shrink-wrapped packages is architected to use the same building block components of technology - so organizations have to contend with supporting a variety of different database engines, workflow engines and reporting tools (that all work differently). The alternative to buying read-made software solutions of course is to build your own. The problem in doing this is the high cost and risk of project failure. Developing bespoke software applications has traditionally been performed by progr...

A new report on federal stimulus spending shows that money invested in public transportation projects created twice as many jobs as highway projects. The report by the Public Interest Research Group, in conjunction with the Center for Neighborhood Technology and Smart Growth America, states that every billion dollars spent from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) on public transportation produced 16,419 job-months, as compared to 8,781 job-months for every billion spent on highway infrastructure. The groups -- and CTA Tattler -- are pushing the U.S. Senate to change the latest jobs bill this month to include more public transit projects. The current bill provides more than three times as much funding for highway projects....

More Sewing Projects and a Few Mistakes

I had another post lined up for today and wouldn't you know it? I messed the entire thing up. Long story but you can bet I let out a wail when my hour of work went down the drain. I'll have to try it again for next week but to hold you over I'll share this instead.I was kind of proud of this one because I had an old dress pattern from several years ago (New Look 6748 if you're interested) that I'd been holding onto and then I happened to have yards of fabric left over from Grace's Halloween costume last year.So I put the two together and came up with this. Kind of like the peanut butter/chocolate marriage thing and I think it works--at least I felt kind of fun wearing something that felt a little more exotic than my standard dark winter wear. However, the whole thing was not without its irritations as well because the pattern called for a knit fabric. I was worried that my normal size would be too small for a woven pattern so I cut it larger and when I was done it looked like a...

How they made Stonehenge and my next projects
2009-09-12 22:30:00
It's inspiring when people spend their own time to help humanity understand its past. In fact, watching this guy move those huge stones motivated me to figure out some other mysteries. This weekend, my brother-in-law and I will go over to the quarry at Irwindale and recreate one of those Easter Island thingies- Maori, I think. During my vacation in December, I plan on renting leasing some cheap land, maybe an old Circuit City or something and burning one of those Nazca crop shapes into the ground. I'm also watching the extended Blu-Ray of Mel Gibson's Apocalypto to figure out how those wily Mayans knew about JFK's death. Hopefully I'll get to finishing it in a couple of years, around Chikchan 14th or thereabouts.
