Fuzzy Punk-Rock
2011-01-10 17:52:00 Somewhere snugly in the middle of the rock and metal spectrum stonerrock has carved itself a hazy little niche of its own. The strange thing about it, of course, is that not many actual stonerbands like to be tagged that way. Well I'm not a creative musician looking for an artistic identy nor an uptight reviewer hoping to score scene-points. So I use the S-word when I like to and concerning this record I state that stonerrock label is all over it. From hyperfuzzed guitars over the raspy but intelligible vocals to the lyrics chiefly dealing with sex and fun. So according to any inclusive or exclusive defintion you can blog these cats are stonerrock. Now, we've got thatout of the way and generally speaking it's a good thing. Belgium's rock scene has lost a couple of bands over the last few years and there's plenty of space for low brow, hard rocking groovyness on stage next to Cabron and the recently resurrected Hulk(k). Listening to Duran Duran's Arena album, having kind-of spiky hair, and wearing Docksiders without socks probably doesn't qualify as punk (but I thought it did.)Real punks have screen names like "Maddiecherie," "DeadxRomance" and "sexyvamp12," and would probably not be caught dead listening to Duran Duran, unless they were listening to it burn, maybe. However what most punk fans of the era fail to realize is that perhaps the greatest live musical representation of The Minutemen, the album "ballot result" released in 1987, was spawned when a Tucson DJ released a bootlegged live album (see picture above right) recorded when the band played for a radio broadcast on the FM station KLPX.I was a huge fan of The Minutemen at the time, Tucson was my hometown, and I knew D.Boone. Here are the facts as I recall them:1. The Virgin Vinyl Show was a Sunday night radio show hosted by DJ Jonathon L. At the time this was the only radio vehicle that brought the growing "punk scene" in Tucson, Arizona new music.
