Education: The Forgotten Missing Link in Indian Moral Deficit Puzzle
2011-10-14 09:29:00
This morning, in the BBC Hardtalk, Stephen Sackur was talking with George Bizos regarding growing concerns on lack of human rights and freedom of speech in South Africa. One point that Sackur made, which applies probably more in India today, in the context of recent dangerous culture of intolerance on Prashant Bhushan is; how come, ...
Song Of The Day - "Crossword Puzzle" by Sly Stone
2011-06-14 14:46:00
by Eric Berman Song Of The Day - "Crossword Puzzle" by Sly Stone This one comes from Sly Stone's oft-neglected 1975 album "High On You." Yes, it was the beginning of the end for Sly's relevance, but this album still offers plenty of good listening. Hip-Hop aficionados will recognize the indelible horn riffs from De La Soul's "Say No Go" featured on their classic album "3 Feet High And Rising."...
Puzzle #54: Odd one out

Puzzle #48: The linguistic fabric of Illinois
2010-12-03 12:23:00
My family recently received a document from the State of Illinois' Department of Healthcare and Family Services. It concerned healthcare coverage for our young son. The bulk of the document was in English, but to account for the possibility of it landing in the mailbox of non-English speaker, one page had the following message written at the top: "Important! This material contains information about health benefits. If you need help translating it, call 1-866-255-5437." ... followed by the same sentence (or so I'm guessing) translated into fifteen other languages. Given what you know, or can guess, about the immigrant populations of Chicago and Illinois, can you deduce what fifteen languages the state is using to cover all its non-English bases?...

Puzzle #39: Vowel movement
2010-09-24 16:46:00
Last week's puzzle has got me in a vowely mood. Here's another one centered around with our five open-vocal-tract friends: Take the letters P_CK. You can fill the blank with each of the five vowels to form a common word: pack, peck, pick, pock, puck. There are a number of similar four-letter constructions, and some five- or six-letter ones. Not counting words ending in -ing, can you think of the only such seven-letter construction? Hint: it starts with a B....

Puzzle Play Mat
2010-07-09 17:46:00
This is a huge mat which is ideal for small rug-rats on hard floors. It’s easy to clean, waterproof (because accidents happen) and doesn’t have that foam-rubber smell. It grips my hard tiled floor so well that I sometimes borrow it to do yoga on. But it’s much more than just a useful mat. You can play hopscotch on it or make a large snakes and ladders board (with a few pictures, stuffed animals or lego constructions for the snakes and ladders). You can try to touch all the letters of your name with your hands and feet or build a wordsearch for your little brother. Then when you’re bored with two dimensions you can make a cube to hide things in or a tube to crawl through. Unless you live in a mansion it’s big enough to divide and have a small play area in several rooms and one on the patio. Of course each child will want the letters of their own name in their own room. This is the moment when you realize you didn’t give nearly enough thought to nam...

Puzzle #7: Solution
2010-01-28 15:24:00
Congrats to Aaron, the first solver of yesterday's boxes puzzle. I said in the post that the puzzle was a question, which was a hint to help you see that the word "WHAT" was positioned clockwise around the first square. Following the same pattern, things kind of broke down from there, requiring you to look into a new order to put the boxes in. The key here was to rearrange them alphab-etically by the middle letter:...

2009-12-14 20:19:00

Duplicate content SEO puzzle- PR submissions vs articles
2009-06-02 16:39:00
Here's a thing- why is it OK to publish a PR piece on your site as well as submitting it to PR sites, but it's not OK to publish article content that you've submitted to article sites? They appear to be so similar as to be almost the same thing, so why would the search engines potentially penalise you for one and not the other? One key distinction is their intent. Here are the main factors: PR is clearly self promotion- everyone knows this so when you choose to publish on a PR site the engines know that the content is unique to the referenced organisation or brand- they know that you're not being a dirty spammer, they know that PR sites host content that can be found easily elsewhere, and that there is no attempt being made to game them. Online PR pieces usually only use a homepage URL to link back to a site, rather than pointing to a specific page using keyword anchor text- there is no attempt to gain any reall SEO leverage. PR pieces are not int...

PEO is Only a Piece of the Economic Puzzle
2009-03-04 23:29:00
There is no stopping the wheels of fortune, whether you’re the little guy or the big corporation. When the financial markets are on a downturn and the economy takes a nosedive, it’s time to look at cutting corners and finding ways to save money any way possible. However, what is a business to do when employees are screaming for pay increases to handle inflation, customers are spending less and expecting the same, if not better quality, and finding banks to lend money for day-to-day functions is almost impossible? There are many possible solutions to the economic problem, but short of reforming the government, only a few can be handled within the company. From restructuring to accommodate urbanization trends, to utilizing a payroll outsourcing company, there are still a fair number of things to be done to assist in finding the spare funds hidden within a company, but there is no magical one-size fits all cure. Nearly every company in financial need will be required to utilize mul...
