Sun-Times Gives Readers The Boot (And Tickets)
2009-10-30 04:56:00 The cover story of today's Chicago Sun-Times is a ward by ward breakdown of booting and ticketing in Chicago. This info came out in a handout on the first day of city budget hearings from the Department of Revenue which was the first department to come under aldermanic scrutiny....
Joel McHale invites Show Patrol readers to his 'Community'
2009-09-02 22:37:00 Joel McHale is all about Show Patrol. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration. But he is all about Show Patrol readers, especially if they watch his new fall comedy, "Community," on NBC. Next week I'll offer my fall winners and losers, and "Community" is on the winner list--and not because McHale is giving me a shout-out. Despite having gone to a community college myself, I found the mocking of such schools and their students funny. The fall semester for "Community," co-starring Chevy Chase and Chicago native Dan Pudi, begins at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17....

5 Features I Want E-Book Readers to Bring to the Table
2009-08-27 20:25:00 I got my first walkman just a decade back, and perhaps because of Mobile phones and the Ipod a generation of Indians might never see the walkman in their lives. The point though is that while the Walkman became one of the greatest inventions ever it took a a decent amount of time before it went on to be a global standard accessory. I see the same case with E-book readers, and I see the same impact that a Walkman created with music happening with E-book readers and publishing. So when Sony announced their version and now Asus planning one of their own, and to say nothing of Kindle, I am excited to see them share the vision to some extent (made myself the de facto visionary there). Anyway, here are some features that I clearly would love to see in E-book readers: 1. Ability to Link and Email besides annotations: While the Kindle ensures bookmarks and notes on books are excellent features, I feel the ability to add links to words and email snippets clipped from the book on the Go would...

Tattler readers share a wealth of ideas to improve the CTA
2009-08-17 13:00:00 First, many thanks to all who have made some thoughtful suggestions on ways to improve the CTA. So far there are well over 100 comments, and probably 200 ideas or more, since many folks had more than one idea.CTA management definitely reads this blog, and I intend to ask them about some of the suggestions. Many of you asked for more stations and station rehabs, and others want some stations closed. Others suggested bus-only lanes and better street-level signage. Jeanine thinks most public-facing employees need retraining on how to interact with customers.Goldminetim jumped into the fray a few times and challenged some of the ideas. That helps make for a richer discussion. Dromero had some good, basic suggestions, such as...

Important Notice to the Readers
2009-06-13 21:27:00 I have honestly been considering throwing in the towel at Eclectic Grooves for quite some time. This probably doesn't come as a surprise to most of you, since I've been wearing out the grooves of this "broken record" for quite some time. I've been struggling between running this blog because I want to share music with people, and wanting to be popular and receive recognition for my hard work. The comments have been sparse, and I really don't know what else I can do to increase the interest. In addition, the hits have gone down considerably in the past few months. I was never one of those blogs like 4Brothers Beats or My Favorite Sounds that generated a ton of traffic, but I was getting at least 275-325 a day. Now, I would be lucky to break 200, and that's on a day that I post something new. Even though doing the Plain Brown Wrappers series seemed to spark the interest of visitors, it wasn't helping me generate very much new traffic to the site. I realize that I am...

GayPatriot Readers: More Generous than the Vice President
2009-04-16 18:46:00 On Tuesday, when I was identified Children’s Hospital/Los Angeles as one my charitable donations to my tax guy, he, recalling my past returns, commented that I always support that international leader in pediatrics. I always support them, I replied, because of the institution’s sterling reputation. He then related how when his nephew was suffering from a complicated respiratory problem, he was airlifted there and received extraordinary care. He’s doing fine today. It made me feel good to hear an example of the good work that one of “my” charities does. Because I would be getting back a little more from the feds than I had anticipated, when I returned home to find a solicitation from the hospital in my pile of mail to be sorted, I instantly cut them a check. I’m sure I’m not alone. I’m sure countless other Americans, when getting money back, are equally generous. If not more so. Unless of course they’re the Vice Pres...

Welcome some new readers, and Kate is very smart.
2009-01-13 16:01:00 The Best of Everything is pleased to welcome two newly-identified readers.First up is Tudor Constantin, who, like me, has a couple of blogs that he writes. The one that caught my eye is "Tudor-Virgil Constantin," a blog that includes his thoughts, thoughts that include things that are actually helpful (unlike here), things like 21 hints for a happy life. (I like #21 the best.)Second up is "Kate," who has chosen to remain anonymous while also defending the honor of yams. Kate read "The Best Part of the Song 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' and in the great tradition of me and people who think like me, Kate ignored all the window dressing and went right to the heart of the matter: explaining the yam. She writes:Your sweet potato is NOT a yam. Even though the entire american food industry (and populace) has confused the issue for years and people buy cans labeled "yams" that are truly sweet potatoes. The traditional american diet doesn't include real yams, just two kinds of sweet po...

Building Rapport with your readers!
2008-11-06 19:45:00 Building rapport is not an easy thing to do but it is one thing I've realised lately that is quite important. In my job, we are trained that the first thing to do when you meet someone is to build rapport with them. We use the rule of 9, which means that you find out 9 things about them and give them 3 things back about you. This could be anything from where you live, if you have kids or a partner, what kind of job you have and what interests you. So how does this help me? Well it is very important if you write a blog to build rapport with your readers. In this online world that would be through comments, forums and instant messaging. It is important to encourage your readers to leave comments and also to join the network. Do you enjoy having comments left on your blog? Does it give you ideas about which to write? Or if you are a reader, do you revisit sites that gave you something in return?

Just Passed 600,000 Readers
2008-10-04 06:09:00 And still running at about 1,375 readers/day.Thanks readers!Keep on coming back, y'all! Tell your friends. Bring your friends, family, wives, lovers, kids. Hell, you can even bring your pets to the blog.I've been trying for some time to push up above around 1200-1400/day, but it seems impossible. I wonder how anyone does that anyway? I guess you could go porn, but I'm not going to go there. One problem is that once your traffic starts going up, the demands of your readership are going to start increasing also. As your traffic rises, you will probably have to spend more and more time on the page. At some point, you may need extra writers or helpers to help you take on the load. Now, if you have any money at all coming in, you may have to start splitting it up.And if your readership starts getting really big, you will start needing things like servers, web designers, web programmers, etc. And your income may not be going up at all. That's why you see a lot of the bigger bloggers ou...

Readers' Panel: How to Protect Your Blog and Your Copyright
2008-09-23 10:00:00 Dear Michelle:How do you protect your copyrighted work? Are there ways to keep your posts from showing up on random sites? I believe the term is called "blog scraping" and I'd love to know how to stop it. Mommy K from The Great Walls of BaltimoreFirst you must know that anything you produce is automatically copyrighted. You don't need an attorney, you don't need a formal piece of paper or the fancy little C-circle on your page to make it yours and be protected under copyright law. Then what does a copyright symbol do?The reason people put the copyright symbol on their work is merely to give publicity to the fact that they do, in fact, recognize their intellectual property rights and are willing to protect their copyrighted content. Think of it as a "Beware of Dog" sign. If you have a home then it's automatically yours and no one can enter it or take your things without permission--but it doesn't hurt to have a big ol' rottweiler on the scene to make sure people remember th...

Readers' Panel: Internet Privacy Issues
2008-08-25 10:00:00 Dear Michelle:Have you ever addressed the issue of security and pictures on your blog? How do you decide what you should or should not publish and do you worry about publishing personal things or pictures of your children?Sincerely,Mary at Not Before 7I've been asked this by many people but most recently by Mary so I'll give her credit. It comes most frequently from people who don't have blogs who, puzzled by the phenomenon of blogging, will ask me why on earth I would expose so much personal information but sometimes bloggers want to know how cautious they should be when posting pictures or information.I don't want to be flippant about this, as with much of life there is potential for danger, even disaster, but it's a matter of evaluating the issues and acting with wisdom.First let's look at the benefits of sharing a bit of your personal information with your readers. Sharing personal things connects you with your readers, lets them know a little bit about you and gives you ...

I guess the Truth Doesn't SELL! Newspapers really think their readers can'
2008-08-02 19:06:00 It amazes me at times the lengths some newspapers will go for the all mighty buck! Episcopal Life was reporting about a day at their Lambeth Conference. They were talking that day about the Violence Against Women, and the silence of domestic violence within the church. The popular press in England decides that we need to take portions of what Bishop Catherine Roskam said at the conference with a nasty little twist. I guess the truth doesn't sell enough newspapers or something. Its pretty sick! They are attempting to say she mentioned that pastors beat their wifes in certain parts of the world, because its morally acceptable there. YEAH! Okay then! They must be deaf and their reading skills must certainly be lacking. I wonder if their supervisors are aware! It makes their newspapers look bad that's for sure!Over at Simple Massing Priest, and Blogging Regiliously are just two places of many that seem outraged at the lies that the newspapers are trying to convey! Here is th...
Ten Ways to Piss Off You Readers, Kill Your Blog, and Get Banned From the I
2008-07-15 11:42:00 Everywhere I look there is blogging advice on how to increase your traffic, pagerank, and readership on the net. There?s syndication, RSS feeds, and any type of social topic you would ever need. However, nobody tells you how to stop the traffic, alienate your fan base; so I thought I should try.1. Active in blogging? Why not put as many popups on your page as humanly possible? Make it as difficult as possible for a reader to navigate away from your page and ensure that he will never come back! If you are not comfortable with popups, AdSense ads after every post and every type of widget that you can find will do the trick.2. Too many comments? Turn them off, don?t respond when they are posted, and return fire with fire. People like to feel engaged when they read your content. Don?t let ?em!3. Got an RSS feed? Get rid of it, or better yet, find a blog that you absolutely hate and offer it as the feed through your site. It all looks like XML code until you plug it into a reader anyway....
