Some more reading ...
2009-12-04 18:19:00 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ta-komabibelot/ / CC BY 2.0 Sorry for not being in here with posts on a more frequent basis, but I've been out of the house so much the past week with networking events that I've not had the time to sit down and compose entries that would be useful to my readers. Now, I could, of course, regale you with stories of what I've been off doing (like the TweetUp today at Navy Pier at the "Online Press Room" that they've set up for Tweeters and Bloggers as part of the opening of the Winter WonderFest), but I'm trying to find ways of making this more generic, while still having the essence of it being material coming from one individual's...
Fr. James V. Schall on reading "Great Books"
2009-11-27 17:30:00 I have no doubt that what are called the “great books” should be read. I read Plato and Aristotle every semester with increasing awe. But the reading of great books does not do the trick, if I might call it that. What does the trick are books that tell the truth. And usually these books are very difficult for a student to come by. They are “notes from the underground,” to steal a phrase from Dostoyevsky. Thus, Another Sort of Learning contains many book lists. Most of the works recommended are relatively short. It is not all that difficult to get at the truth, once you know where to begin. Universities are not a total waste of time, but most graduates earn degrees while remaining confused about the ultimate things. About these latter things, little is to be found in most universities. Still, graduates have their whole lives ahead of them, if they can read.Fr. James V. Schall on "Another Sort of Learning" (The Catholic Thing October 9, 2009 )
Your holiday reading ...
2009-11-26 04:05:00 http://www.flickr.com/photos/xy-bermatthew/ / CC BY 2.0One of the features that I've planned for The Job Stalker is a weekly round-up of interesting articles that I've come across relating to the job search. It's my intent that this will be a regular Friday feature, but with getting things geared up here last week, the first of those posts came out on Saturday and, due to the holiday looming ahead of us this week, I'm passing along these to you now. There's quite a lot to read in this batch, so it's just as well if you have some extra time to get into them. One of the side-effects of concentrating the bulk of my job search on Twitter this time around is that,...
Some weekend reading ...
2009-11-21 10:57:00 http://www.flickr.com/photos/wo-nderlane/ / CC BY 2.0As noted previously, I probably spend six hours a day catching up with my Twitter feed. I have tried to keep my "follow" list somewhat under control, but it has grown rather quickly, and I'm currently reading over 400 users' comments there (and, I do actually read all of those, which is why I end up re-following only about 1 in 5 of folks who follow my personal Twitter stream ... I'm a bit more flexible @TheJobStalker, though, only not following the most blatantly scammy folks). As my current "job" is looking for a job, my obvious main goal in all this is to find the postings of plausible openings for my background and skill sets. However,...

China Marketing And Branding. Reading The Tea Leaves.
2009-09-20 22:08:00 The DragonBeat blog has a great post, entitled, "Why foreigners are beating China’s tea-makers on their home turf." The post is on why China has none of the leading tea brands worldwide, but what it says pretty much applies across the board to Chinese branding in general. The comments are interesting as well, with many of them complaining about how bad Lipton tea is and how the Lipton market is completely different from the market for Chinese tea. Wrong. If anything, Lipton is a classic example of great branding and of how a Western company has managed to take a ho-hum product (in this case, Lipton tea) and market it in such a way as to trump the market. When will there be a Chinese Lipton and who will that be?

St Ambrose and Reading
2009-09-19 18:59:00 Matthias Stomer (Amersfoort, 1600 - Sicily, after 1650) Saint Ambroise/Saint Ambrose Circa 1633-1639 Oil on canvas 110 x 130 cm Muse des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, Rennes St Augustine, in his Confessions [Book Six, Chapter Three] has a curious anecdote which bears on the history of reading: ?When [Ambrose] read, his eyes scanned the page and his heart sought out the meaning, but his voice was silent and his tongue was still. Anyone could approach him freely and guests were not commonly announced, so that often, when we came to visit him, we found him reading like this in silence, for he never read aloud? St Augustine wondered why St Ambrose read silently and was not even moving his lips. He puts forward some reasons: "Perhaps he was afraid, that if he read out loud, a difficult passage by the author he was reading would raise a question in the mind of an attentive listener, and he would then have to explain what it meant or even argue about some of the more abstruse points." The impli...
Dice Reading using an Arduino
2009-09-19 13:01:00 Steve Hoefer has completed version 2 of his Dice Reading project (Version 1 can be found here). I was surprised to see that only 5 locations of the dice are looked at to determine what number is present since there are actually nine locations where the pips could be located. It obviously works but for some reason isn’t obvious to me at this moment! "This version uses 5 IR emitter/receiver pairs to read five of the nine potential pip locations on a die face. I had to file down the edges of the detectors to get them pip-distance apart and place the emitters directly behind the detectors so they’d get maximum reflection from the surface"

On my reading list: Houseonomics
2009-09-09 05:01:00 This 2008 book by Gary N. and Margaret H. Smith was reviewed on Inman today: Houseonomics describes both the financial and emotional benefits associated with homeownership, arguing for buying your own house as a viable option even in tough economic times. You can read the introduction to the book here I think in these times its important for young people to do a little harder and more substantial research before jumping into buying a home. While many of us use the internet as a first source of information, backing up that knowledge with a book penned by experts should be a good support system to back up or refute what we find on the web. I currently have the book...

A Tribute to READING RAINBOW Which Was Cancelled After 26 Years
2009-08-31 23:50:00 Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high,Take a look, it's in a book — Reading Rainbow ...File this under "What are you blogging about now that nobody cares about"?Reading Rainbow will not be seen on PBS after a 26 year run. The show started way back in 1983. Sure, you might think who the hell cares. Well appparently, a lot of kids who are all grown up now loved that show and Levar Burton and the kids.As evidenced by all these YouTubers putting out their own version of the Reading Rainbow song, I'm convinced millions upon millions of kids loved that show and probably some parents too. It's O.K. grown-ups you can say it. You watched it with your kids and were a fan. Levar, the grown-up made it seem that way at least. There seems to be some contraversy over this article on the NPR website as to why the show was cancelled.Apparently NPR blamed it on the Bush administration. The commenters are writing in to say PBS has been showing re-runs since 2006 and they were asking for...

2009-07-17 04:35:00 "Two cops shot in leg while executing warrant" "Five New Jersey Officers Wounded in Shootout""Officer deaths up in first half of '09"The first story is local. Two Chicago Police Department officers were shot in their legs while executing a search warrant. The bad guy opened fire through a bedroom wall. This is, I think, the third or fourth officer-involved shooting this week in the city of Chicago. In the second story, police in Jersey City engaged in what was described as a "running gun battle" with two armed robbery suspects. 5 officers were wounded, including one who "received a shotgun blast to the left side of his face and will require reconstructive surgery to repair his jaw, sinus and the area...

The Color of Paradise and Reading God?s Wor(l)d
2009-05-09 22:17:00 The Iranian film ?Color of Paradise? by Majid Majidi, which in its original title literally translates as ?God?s Color?, is an impressive and genuinely moving spiritual portrait of a blind boy who is rejected not only by society but by his very own father. Mohammed is a creative, generally content and ingenious boy who despite of his visual impairment manages to climb trees, run through fields, and study literature and poetry with fervor and enthusiasm. Yet his father, a widow, sees him as a source of embarrassment especially since he would like to remarry. As a result, he keeps Mohammed?s existence hidden from the family of his bride-to-be. He only mentions his two daughters and wants nothing to get into the way of his impending marriage. This cruel and calculated behavior does not remain hidden from the kind and observant eyes of his mother, Mohammed?s beloved grandmother. The movie manages to give us a heart rendering glimpse of this blind boy?s life. With him we hear the myriad s...

2009-04-26 15:18:00 Last night, Sweetie and I did something we almost NEVER do.Get your mind out of the gutter: I'm not talking about that. This is a family blog. PG-13. Mostly. No, what we did last night was sit in our living room and read. We'd put the Babies! to bed, and it was only 8:30. Sweetie said "What do you want to do?" and I said "I don't know, what do you want to do?"We are exciting, are we not? Sitting in our room was out -- I didn't want to become that guy that kinda goes to bed at 8:30 on a Saturday night, and sitting in bed at 8:30 is going to bed, isn't it? I'm already the guy who puts pajamas on at 3 in the afternoon on Saturday and justifies it by saying "We're not having company over, right?"But sitting down by the TV was out, too, as the older kids were down there and they were (a) crabby and (b) watching boring stuff on TV.So we sat in our living room and read, and that's when I realized why we never do that, why we never sit on our fancy couch in our fancy living r...
