PENGUIN GOES DIGITAL-ONLY
2012-02-02 17:56:00 Book publisher, Penguin, is setting its sights on the digital-only market with their new Penguin Shorts programme. The premise of the move is to focus on short reads that'll be available for $1.99 USD a pop and fertilize its own niche among avid digital readers. Not a bad idea considering music went the route of singles and the iTunes store. And with gadgets like the Kindle Fire and Nook, who's to say the reading market won't adapt just as easily as music has? Smart.

Critical Reading for Rare Earth Metals Investors
2011-12-27 22:00:00 A quick search of media stories from the month of December, 2009 shows 24 clips including references to the 15 lanthanides and their related elements scandium and yttrium. By contrast, one day in December, 2011 produced 56 stories on the same resources. Even the tone of REE coverage has transformed over the years. Two years ago, an analyst piece from veteran metals consultant Jack Lifton titled “Underpriced Rare Earth Metals from China Have Created a Supply Crisis ” was a common headline as the world discovered that cheap supplies had left manufacturers vulnerable to a monopoly with an agenda. That supply fear made REE the investment de jour and sent almost all of the rare earth prices through the . . . → Read More: Critical Reading for Rare Earth Metals Investors

Reading the Doggy Gazette
2011-10-09 20:41:00 In a world that leaves us little time to stop and smell the roses anymore, it especially saddens me when I see owners jerking and pulling their dogs along behind them on a leash, never letting them pause to sniff the ?news? left by other dogs who?ve gone before. And certainly not allowing time to let them update that news with their own ?reply.? Loosely, it?d be like you trying to catch up with your favorite bloggers, but every time you'd get to one of their latest posts and wanted to leave a comment someone would yank your laptop away. One of the main reasons my dogs love their walks so much is because they're allowed to read the Doggy Gazette from cover to cover, to their heart's content. But what exactly is the "Doggy Gazette" and why is it completely normal for dogs to want to "read" and "write" it? And why should you reconsider, if you haven't been allowing time for your dog to stay current with the local news? You probably already know that dogs have millions more scent...

My 11 Favorite Living "Summer Reading, Page Turner" Suspense Nove
2011-06-14 04:46:00 There are few things I enjoy more than getting caught up in a captivating mystery/suspense novel. In fact, I'm hoping to write this pretty quickly so I can get back to Mean Town Blues by Sam Reaves. While I value the great insight I get from some of the topical non-fiction books I read--Matt Taibbi's Griftopia should be nationally required--, have a boatload of biographies about people I admire and appreciate those who write (or just regularly read) "serious' fiction, "page turners" are by far the works through which I most acutely enjoy the act of reading. I've never been much of a beach goer or sun tanner, so the concept of summer reading isn't really all that directly...

There Is A Bad Reading But The System Should Be Mature
2011-06-01 16:46:00 Relating to marine aquariums what is meant by ?mature?? It means that the aquarium system is ready to support life. In fact there are two levels of maturity: the first is the initial level which is achieved after the system has been set up and the biological filter (some call it life support) has been activated. The second is when the system is truly mature, this is when the livestock is present in entirety and the biological filter has fully settled down to the task it faces, this could take many months. The first level could take many days to weeks. 2011-05-28 06:01:00 Photo by Jeremy Wrenn.I really wish I had some good excuses to make aside from "I've been busy" that I've not been writing in here, but that's pretty much the core of it. The project that was, back in December, looking to take up about a quarter of my time has almost gotten to be 8 hours day. Obviously, if I'm "billing out" 40 hours a week, I might well be considered employed at this point, although the dollars are not what they need to be as yet and there are no benefits. As I've noted, this has the very strong potential of moving over to a "real job" in the next month or so, so we'll see. Of course,...

Reading 'Under the Dome' and 'Sound and the Fury'
2011-02-17 01:35:00 I've taken to trading back and forth between two books at a time, and rarely has it payed off in as much sheer reading bliss as simultaneously tackling Stephen King's "Under the Dome" and Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury."Let me admit that as a youngster, I read everything Stephen King committed to paper. As the years wore on, and I tried to fashion myself as a writer, I kind of fell away from enjoying his books. His sentences can clunk together, and his characters tend to have exactly three different ways of formulating thoughts and sentences. But I just finished "Under the Dome" and I gotta say it made me feel like I was thirteen again when I'd stay...

More social media reading ...
2011-02-01 06:01:00 One of the challenges of writing The Job Stalker is trying (and, yes, I do try, even if that does not seem obvious most of the time) to make the material here as broadly-based as I can. After all, this blog (which I did not originate) is intended to be about the job search from the perspective of somebody actively looking for work. It's not a blog for an HR professional, it's not a blog for a Career Counselor, it's not a blog for some "employment guru", it's a blog from the perspective of somebody "in the trenches". Reading Ionograms
2011-01-13 05:22:00 Previously on Wireless Waffle we have discussed ways of checking and even gaining some knowledge of the state of propagation of the short-wave bands. But for truly advanced users, there is a way to find out the actual state of propagation for a particular location in real time. Scattered around the world are a series of ionosondes. These ionosondes are rather like radars in that they transmit a signal to the ionosphere and measure the time taken to get a response. They do this across a range of short-wave frequencies. The result is a chart called an ionogram. An ionogram is effectively a radar picture of the height of the ionosphere at the location immediately above the ionosonde as well as providing an indication of its refractivity, over a range of frequencies. An example ionogram taken from the ionosonde in Dourbes, Belgium, is shown below. The ionogram is the ultimate way of assessing short-wave propagation. It tells us exactly what is going on. To help interpret the ionogram...

'Publish This Book' Reading This Thursday in Boston
2010-12-07 14:22:00 The city of Boston and I have a well-known dispute over the level of its awesomeness, Boston often claiming that it has any, and me taking the opposite side of that debate. Still, a détente will go into affect this weekend, as I will be reading at Tufts in Cambridge (this is actually Boston, but MIT somehow got it changed so people would know they are smarter and can do things like that; there's also a place called Somerville that is for all intents and purposes also Boston, and inexplicably this makes sense to everyone and is the premise for Ben Affleck's entire career). Anyhow, you should come because the English department is also getting pizza. So there will be...
Leisure Reading
2010-12-05 16:32:00 Don't know if anyone has noticed, but I haven't been doing a lot of social media stuff lately. Why? Not really sure. Contrary to what people think, no, I haven't quit or anything like that. Anyway, one of the things that I have gotten back to is some leisure reading. Well, not actually reading, but listening to audio books. When I first started my job (has it been almost 10 years already?), I had a long commute and popped in a CD to listen to a book. Over the past weekend, I also went to an interesting meeting (I'll post about that soon), and I listened to another book during the drive. Reading/listening to books really make traveling just go quicker. Don't get me wrong, I am the furthest thing from a book reviewer. But here are a few books I've read over the past couple of weeks. An Object Of Beauty by Steve Martin: I'm usually not a fiction reader type guy. But I really enjoyed Martin's book called Shopgirl. This present book takes you through the world of art from the e...
