Countdown to Thanksgiving Dinner: Thanksgiving Recipes
2009-11-20 22:59:00
Six days to go -- time to make the biscuit dough.  I adore a savory flaky biscuit with Thanksgiving dinner. Light and delicious, it somehow feels lighter and more special than bread. Here, I even add a small amount of dried cranberries for a tiny sweet and tart touch to an otherwise savory delight. Watch the video for instructions, step-by-step. I love making these ahead since they are quite rich, which makes them a good candidate for freezing. Not baking then freezing, rather freezing the already cut biscuit shaped raw dough. They will still need to be baked off on either Wednesday evening or Thursday morning of Thanksgiving. After you cut these, be sure to seal them in saran or a...
Review: Container Gardens 50 Recipes for Year-Round Gardening
2009-11-11 04:17:00
Last week a representative from Crown Publishing Group - Random House, Inc. offered to send me Container Gardens: 50 Recipes for Year-Round Gardening by P. Allen Smith to review. Since I try to include ideas for container gardening on this blog because many Chicagoans live in apartments or small spaces I agreed to take a look. What I thought was a small book on container gardens turned out to be a collection of container garden ideas printed (both sides) on tabbed cards that you can take with you to the garden center or nursery when picking out plants for your container gardens....

Stick THAT in Your Happy Box!
2009-08-16 17:54:00
Having recently gone through a growth spurt, Cait was in need of some new clothes. So off to the Mall we went.  We always concentrate our efforts in this one particular store, because we always have good luck finding cloths that fit and that Cait will actually wear. The tradition is to make our way around each department — shoes, pants, tops, etc.– until, at the very end, we come to the fancy dress section.  This is where the fun begins. You see, Cait has always loved playing dress-up and still does.  So the first time we came upon the glittering racks of evening wear, she thought she’d died and gone to heaven. When it didn’t occur to her that there was anything wrong with “just trying on the dresses,” I squashed my initial impulse to say no and instead said, “Sure, why not?” She had a blast, and I must admit so did I. Ever since, we’ve always saved time for the gowns and party dresses. The rules are that she’s allowed to ...

Two Foolproof Swedish Herring Recipes
2009-03-30 03:57:00
Easter is approaching and it is time to start thinking about Easter food. Our Swedish Easter 'smorgasbord' would not be complete without at least a couple of herring dishes. Two days ago, I purchased a large bucket of salt herring fillets. Once soaked, the fillets can be prepared in so many ways. I usually make a lot of pickled herring because it will keep up to two weeks refrigerated.Swedish recipes call for 'ättiksprit' - a special kind of vinegar. Not the kind you use in salad dressings. It's very important to use distilled white vinegar, acidity 12 percent, to inhibit bacterial growth.Foolproof Swedish Pickled Herring RecipeINGREDIENTS* 8 salt herring fillets* 100 ml distilled white vinegar (12 %)* 200 ml sugar* 300 ml water* 2 red onions, peeled and sliced* 1 teaspoon allspice berries, crushed* 1 bay leaf* dill sprigsMETHOD1. Soak the herring fillets in plenty of water overnight.2. Bring white distilled vinegar, sugar and water to the boil.3. Remove from stove and cool the ...

Boy Does My House Smell Good
2008-12-21 10:00:00
So what was I doing this past week? I got a call from another mom at school asking if I'd rather help out with the Christmas party or do some home baking for the event. Seemed like a no-brainer to me--"Baking!" I said. Then she dumped the punch line on me. "Great! I need a dozen gingerbread girls--I have a cookie cutter I want you to use!"Turns out these were monster gingerbread girls, think Gingerbread-zilla. Each was about ten inches high, and I spent HOURS baking gingerbread for the first time. But now that I've finished I can say with confidence that I have that cookie mastered. Thanks to Becky at And Chloe Makes Six who saved my life with a great gingerbread recipe. If you want to have your house smelling this good too here's the ticket:¾ cup sweet butter¾ cup brown sugar½ cup molasses1 egg4 cups flour¼ teaspoon salt1 teaspoon baking soda2 teaspoons ginger1 teaspoon cinnamon¼ teaspoon nutmeg¼ teaspoon clovesCream the butter and sugar then add molasses then the egg. Smoked Gouda Soup with Sausage and Wild Rice
2008-12-07 10:00:00
Do you know how to pronounce gouda?I didn't until recently, it was always "GOO-da" at the old homestead but it seems that is incorrect. It is correctly pronounce "HOW-da."Go figure. Apparently the Dutch can't spell to save their lives. At any rate, it's good stuff and this soup is one of our winter favorites with all that tasty howda and wild rice in there. Sticks to your ribs it does.5 tablespoons butter1/2 cup onion16 ounces turkey kielbasa, sliced and halved4 tablespoons flour3 14-ounce cans chicken broth1 cup cooked wild rice¼ teaspoons pepperdash of nutmeg3 cups shredded smoked gouda2 cups fat free half and halfSaute onion and sausage in butter. Idea generation recipes?
2008-10-23 18:59:00
Ideas are in the ?air?, right? They are there for the taking. A little research, a little net surfing, a quick brainstorm, some post-it notes, and you should be able to create a couple of dozen great ideas against any particular challenge. Or, does it take a skilled chef(s) and all the right ingredients, blended with care and tended carefully? I think it is more the latter. We are in the process of defining some ?recipes? for ideation based on our successes. In the past managing all the right factors has happened organically, it will be interesting to see if the cookbook approach helps. What I have experienced and witnessed over the years is that great idea generation requires the confluence of several factors, a few of which are chemistry, skill, data, preparation, intensity, humility, and structure. - Personalities need to be at least somewhat compatible. I have seen a group of brilliant people in a room for hours with all the other ingredients there, and noth...

The Indian Recipes Round-Up
2008-10-13 15:02:00
This is one event that I almost regretted hosting because of many glitches that happened along the way. I was contacted by an ex-colleague currently with Warner Bros who wanted to promote a movie she was working with. She also promised movie tickets and various give-aways. It seemed like a fun idea and I happily agreed. But what do we do when people make empty promises and not only let you down but also tens of others who trust you and what you said? I have tried my best to communicate and follow up, but to no avail.Bottom-line: I promised some gifts for the participants and its very likely that I won't be able to keep that promise. It feels horrible and I sincerely apologize for that. To make things slightly better, I will be randomly picking 2 names from the list and send them a surprise gift with apologies since its the movie merchandise that I had originally promised.I did, however, manage to send movie tickets to most of the early birds. Again, my apologies to Jayashree for not...
The Folly Of Diet Recipes
2008-10-07 22:04:00
The Folly Of Diet Recipes was written by Virginia Bola, PsyD from DietWithAnAttitude.comHave you ever wondered why diet books always seem to have a section of recipes?Apart from the desire to make the book look larger and therefore more worthwhile, why should we be so interested in studying foods and ways to serve it when we are trying to avoid it as much as possible? It is inconceivable that we have reached adulthood without the basic skills to boil, bake, steam, or roast our food.We all know that these are the only low fat methods we should be using on any diet. And whatever we eat, plainer is better to control calories. So what are all these recipes doing in a book that is supposed to be redirecting our attention away from food?Is it a case of mutual fool-yourself-time?The diet authors know that unless their menus have taste, and enticing pictures or detailed ingredient lists, no one will select their plan and they'll lose money. In their real diet plan outline, they identify what...
