Reflections on Mitt Romney?s South Carolina loss
2012-01-22 19:36:00
The “South Carolina vote,” writes Tim Stanley in the Telegraph, “was really a referendum on [Mitt] Romney”.  Indeed.  The man who rescued the 2002 Olympics tumbled from a commanding lead in the polls last week to a resounding defeat last night. The on-and-off again Republican frontrunner spent the last week playing defense.  He could have ...
Reflections on Newt?s big South Carolina victory
2012-01-22 09:40:00
As you can probably guess, I’m not as sanguine about Newt’s victory in South Carolina as is Bruce.  I think the most important issue in this election is defeating Barack Obama and replacing him with a president committed to making the kinds of reforms the Democrat has assiduously avoided for the past three years.   ...

Testing our Reflections
2011-11-08 14:04:00
A strong majority — roughly 75% — of people in North America and the UK support geoengineering studies, that is, those that would test man-made conditions to reflect sunlight back to space to cool the planet. Is the effort feasible? Would we be better off with research results on actions
Being Catholic, gay and celibate: Reflections of a faithful Catholic
2011-11-05 15:51:00
I don’t think I’ve ever read a more thoughtful article about being gay and Catholic than the one I read in Our Sunday Visitor on November 3.  Most people seem to choose their sexuality over any religious beliefs, so Steven Gershom’s article about being gay, celibate AND Catholic was refreshing. We all struggle with our sexuality... Read more »
Reflections of 9/11

It’s hard to imagine that ten years have already passed since my wife called from work to tell me a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. I remember turning on the T.V. just in time to see another plane surrealistically disappear into the second tower and at that moment, along ...

Chicago Blackhawks Future: Reflections from Rockford
2011-02-18 04:32:00
On Wednesday night, the Rockford Ice Hogs battled for a big victory over Peoria. I attended the game to get a look at the future of the Blackhawks, and came away with some strong impressions. This wasn't the first time I had seen most of the prospects skate. Indeed, I have been to Rockford on a couple occasions this season and attended every day of the Prospect Camp in July. But now, in the middle of February, the sample size and experience provides a better basis for analysis....

Youngest was cast in a local musical, Camelot, and thus began our family’s journey into the world of community theatre. Much to his credit, my ten year-old actually enjoyed four weeks of rehearsals, seven performances, and two rather uncomfortable fittings, all while wearing jazz shoes and tights. Picturing the world - Reflections on the World Press Photo 2010 exhibition

Chicago Blackhawks Reflections After Three Preseason Games
2010-09-26 16:30:00
The two preseason games against Detroit are hard to put into any competitive context because the Blackhawks skated their "B Team" on Friday night against most of the Red Wings regulars, and then brought back their "A Team" at home on Saturday night against mostly scrubs for Detroit. However, there are a few things we can take away based on what we saw from the roster dynamics in the two games. Photo from HockeyBroad...

Hello dear readers. This week I am out of town on a road trip with the gentlemen of Long Pork for Sketchfest NYC. I will return with a new post on Wednesday 6/16. In my absence my good friend James Vest has submitted two amazing entries for your reading pleasure. Enjoy! ----------------------------------------------------Recently, I became a finalist for what I consider to be my dream job. I have been working two jobs almost continuously since moving to Chicago in 2005. One job pays the bills, and the other is what I love to do. This opportunity would be for the company I currently work for, but by moving to California, I would be doing exactly what I was born to do. There are really...
Review "Itoseng": Reflections on Disillusionment
2010-06-11 21:18:00
'Change is coming, comrades.' Six months before Nelson Mandela became president, the South African village of Itoseng was optimistic for the end of apartheid. Chicago Shakespeare Theatre presents the American Premiere of ITOSENG, the inaugural play in the 2010/2011 World's Stage Series. Award winning playwright Omphile Molusi performs his one-man show illustrating the aftermath of the new democracy. Apartheid has ended. Freedom reigns. Unfortunately, poverty and unemployment also rule the country. ITOSENG tells the stories of a village's struggle to survive. People are looting, prostituting and smoking gancha in an effort to endure the economic climate. Among the tragic tales of tear gas and burned bodies, ITOSENG weaves a hopeful thread of childhood sweethearts reuniting. ITOSENG gives an honest depiction of the side effects of independence. When bad stuff stops, good things happen... and sometimes more bad too. Liberty is complicated.

Enjoy! ----------------------------------------------------In 2005, I moved to Chicago for work. I lived alone in a 175 square-foot apartment in the Gold Coast without air conditioning and walked down Rush Street every morning to get to my job. A Note of Thanks 2009: Personal Reflections of a Year Gone Past
2009-12-29 22:41:00
Now that we are on the verge of yet another new year - and the start of another decade - I would like to look back to what this year has had to offer. Personally it was a very fulfilling year and one of dramatic change of life and circumstances.I started the year with what I would like to call ?fire in my belly?. I had felt dissatisfied with the status quo and wanted something ?new? and ?better? for my family. So we ended up selling everything we owned in Mexico and ventured into an unclear and undefined future. My initial plan was to work in the Middle East, in particular, Saudi Arabia. Why? The idea was to set on an adventure, a completely new experience and, frankly, some money. But things as usual turn out different from what one has planned and we have ended up in Vancouver. In Vancouver I have found a lot of support from many people, mainly friends and strangers. This post is especially dedicated to all those who have welcomed and have had unwavering faith in us. During this ye...
Reflections on Five Years as an SEO Blogger

"The starving-artist lifestyle may be colorful and appealing for a while, but it gets old fast if you are bunking on a friend’s sofa, living under the same roof you did in junior high and lying awake at night wondering how you are going to repay your staggering five-figure student loan. If nothing changes, the next generation of journalists will give up and move on to entirely different pursuits. And you can’t blame them. How many journalistas do you think will be satisfied having to make ends meet by working as baristas?"
Reflections on a SUPERNATURAL Silver-Screen Showdown
2009-09-03 16:38:00
By: CT As we anxiously await armageddon — aka the season premiere of SUPERNATURAL, airing at 9 p.m. E.T. on Thursday, September 10th — we thought this might be the perfect time to look back on the horror flicks Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki (aka those winsome Winchester boys) released earlier this year and decide whose manager deserves a raise… and whose should be demon bait! Let’s say right up front that we thought it was an odd choice for both of the guys to make films in the horror genre during their respective breaks. Yes, sticking to what you know — not to mention what made you famous — is a no-brainer, but let’s not forget that it’s also the path that led Sarah Michelle Gellar to such crapfests as The Return and flicks. Trust us, guys: Next time, stretch your wings a little. Trust that your fans will follow. In any case, both guys made not only horror flicks, but remakes of classic ones — Friday the 13th for Jared, My Bloody Valentine for Jensen — at...

Murders in the Prashanthi temple ? reflections 2
2009-06-01 16:12:00
The Indian press repeatedly described events, as best they were able to investigate them through eye-witnesses who were too frightened to stand forth with their names. Literally hundreds of articles were written in all as the press tried to do its duty to society. Sathya Sai Baba rubbished the entire press coverage and the journalists ...

Reflections on CA Supreme Court Hearing on Prop 8

I had planned a post today on the hearing the California Supreme Court this morning on the constitutionality of Prop 8, but realized that I would basically be repeating a point I had made over and over again, with a slight twist to reflect the circumstances. But, some things, I believe, bear repetition. This return ...

NOL: Stuck in a side-way range. IT means i shouldn't be using ADX or MacD in my analysis. Stochastics suggest a rebound is on the way. As i am short on NOL, i am waiting for the purple moving average to confirm the bearishness. Based on the last two candle stick formation, it seems like NOL is ready to pop higher. Should I long? No! Up yes, but how much is the up-side? Aren't i safer to remain short as we now how market can plunge more than it climbs?HSI: The red spot on the chart is the likelyhood where the rebound may end. It is the downtrend resistance coupled with the neckline of the double top formation. The rally today caught my surprise because it came after Dow closed weak. HSI has not broken the last low about 12,400 points which disappoints me. HSI may rebound within the range still. RSI looks to be supported and this is bad news to shortist. Coz' if HSI is to rebound, plenty of room for RSI to move higher. However, this intra-week rebound may just be shortl...

Roland Song of ESWN was to give a speech at CNBloggercon, but was unable to attend due to a family emergency, so he has put online what he was going to say, entitled, "Reflections of a Bridge Blogger." (h/t to Lost Loawai) It beautifully sets out the evolving history of the "treatment" of China "social incidents" and the role the internet has played in this. It makes for great reading. A Few Saturday Reflections
2008-11-24 14:00:00
'Bama was off this weekend, so I actually got to enjoy a football weekend without the emotional turmoil of your own team playing. It was refreshing, and I had a few thoughts that I'll throw out there for ya.1. The Oklahoma v. Texas Tech game proved that media sex appeals usually matters very little when evaluating good football. While prolific, pure run and gun offenses like at Texas Tech lack the fundamental discipline necessary to execute consistently against equal opposition. Bob Stoops and the Sooners exposed Texas Tech to be exactly what they really are-- the girl at the party who everybody loves until she loses her makeup-- the quintessential brown bagger.2. Here's to you, Tigahfan. Only you, after two BCS championships in the last five years can abandon your team at the first glimpse of adversity. After losing to Alabama, Tiger stadium has seemingly lost its night time mystique. It was empty in the third quarter against Troy, and once again vacant against Ole Miss. This is...

Angkor Wat, the largest religious structure in the world, a truly magnificent Khmer architectural masterpiece, the highlight of every tourist's visit, and the most photographed in all of Cambodia. From afar, looking at this famous tourist attraction in Cambodia will fill you with awe and anticipation. The sheer beauty of the massive site can be overwhelmingly beautiful, especially when veiled in mist in the early morning hours. Mysterious passage ways, beautiful carvings adorning temple walls, tall towers and sweeping courtyards fill the temple landscape and create a sight unlike any other you may have seen. Scrutinized, admired and interpreted by thousands of archaeologists, architects and other designers, the blueprint of Angkor Wat Cambodia remains one of the most unique in the world. Even more beauty is added gracefully to this tourist attraction in Cambodia by a large expanse of gleaming water found in front of the main entrance.- Destination360Seasoned photographers recommend...

Playoff Reflections: Philly Goes to the World Series...
2008-10-16 17:52:00
It looks like FOX will not be getting its dream World Series match-up of the Dodgers and Red Sox, since the Phillies took the National League pennant last night. Now, the Rays just have to won tonight.Cole Hamels dominated as Philadelphia found itself playing for a championship as they downed the Dodgers last night, 5-1. They used offense -- and a whole lot of Dodger miscues -- including three errors from Rafael Furbcal (in one inning) to earn an easy victory.Chad Billingsley was awful, and Greg Maddux sadly may be ever so-close to retirement after his painful outing. So, the first time since '93, they find themselves playing for only their second World Series victory (they only have one in their existence - 1980). For the Dodgers, it was a fun a little run they put together and they made the NLCS exciting; however, one man -- Manny -- does not make a team, and perhaps if everyone else had done their jobs, they would still be playing. Finally, I just really, really, liked this photo...
Fight Night -- Well, Maybe The Appearance Of It; Playoff Reflections
2008-10-13 22:33:00
It was fight night at Dodger Stadium in Sunny California as Manny Ramirez and the Los Dodgers kicked some major Philly arse, 7-2. The Dodgers are still down 2-1, but could make it even tonight if they can get past Joe Blanton.Plus, I need them to win so I can use may tickets for Game Six in Philadelphia. After the Dodgers disposed of Jamie Moyer early by torching him for five runs in the first, things got interesting -- very interesting. It nearly became fight night -- well, in a theatrical sense -- at least. Since I am at work, and pressed for time -- I'll let Jayson Stark tell the story, since he was there, and could tell it better than ever I could.A 94-mph Hiroki Kuroda cannonball whizzing behind the noggin of Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino in the third inning of Game 3.Before that pitch, this was just baseball. After that pitch, we didn't just have a series anymore. We had ?A SERIES.A benches-emptying, fingers-wagging, neck-veins-bulging, coaches-jawing, Manny Manny-iz...
Playoff Reflections: What An Ugly God-Damn Game last Night; All is Written
2008-10-13 02:38:00
Well, the Rays won last night in a long, ugly, but exhilarating game in the Tropicana Dome. The game didn't end until long after 1am, as B.J. Upton plated Fernando Perez -- who was even gutsy for even attempting to score -- on a sacrifice fly to end the contest.Dustin Pedoria -- all five-foot-right (I say five-foot-six) -- hit two homers and showed why he's an MVP candidate plus giving all short guys hope that they can make it in Major League Baseball, along with homers from Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay.Meanwhile, for the Rays, Evan Longoria and B.J. Upton both homered for Tampa.Josh Beckett nor Scott Kazmir looked good, as each got touched up -- and touched up badly. it looks like both men are tired, needless to say. Both need to be on their game to really help out their teams, for sure.Tampa had a 8-6 lead, until allowing the Red Sox to come back late. Rookie call-up David Price got the win, while long-term veteran Mike Timlin took the loss. It's needless to say that the Rays ne...
Dodgers Lose to Phillies, 3-2; Red Sox and Rays; Playoff Reflections...
2008-10-10 16:55:00
Last night, the Dodgers and Phillies played game one of the NLCS and everything came down to a fateful sixth inning. Los Angeles went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, thanks to Manny Ramirez -- again -- with an RBI double; thereafter, Blake DeWitt plated Matt Kemp with an RBI.Derek Lowe had things in control in the sixth inning; however, Shane Victorino reached base on a error off Rafael Furcal, and the Chase Utley homered to tie the game. Two batters, Pat Burrell hit his third homer of the postseason -- a two-run shot -- to make the difference. Cole Hamels was shaky in the first, but kept things in order with yet another post-season start for the victory. Lowe was good, but his two mistakes -- homers to Utley and Burrel -- cost them the win.Like I said, if the Dodgers fall 2-0 in the series, it will be hard for them to come back. It was a very well played game yesterday night in the City of Brotherly Love, and I expect the same tonight in Beantown as the Red Sox and Rays begi...
