Does India Really Need Internet Regulation?
2012-05-21 06:42:00 The Internet is growing more and more relevant with each passing day. Even in a country like India, with a large percentage of rural population, people access the internet through a variety of mediums like their mobile phones. With widespread Internet proliferation around the world, the United Nations wants to take certain steps to either regulate the internet or allow governments to regulate the Internet. In fact, in the 66th session of the UN, India made a proposal to control the internet though a UN Committee. We all remember the Government’s attempts to regulate networks like Facebook and Twitter. Due to tremendous public pressure and ridicule, they reversed their stance saying they were misconstrued. Now, however, even people taking part in running the country are speaking out against Internet regulation. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a Rajya Sabha MP, has written a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in which he asks him to withdraw India’s position of Governm...

Press Council Of India Chairman Calls For Regulation Of Social Media. Much
2012-04-23 14:01:00 Much has been made of Social Media and how it is bringing about a revolution in connecting people. Last year, the Indian Government (Kapil Sibal specifically) was considering that Social Media be censored due to people uploading politically sensitive and satirical content. Well, that didn’t go well and Sibal quickly clarified that ‘censoring’ social media was not what he meant. The outrage on all these social networks did not let the Indian Government to even go ahead with their plans! Press Council of India Chairperson, Justice Markandey Katju feels that there is still a lot of ‘unpleasant’ material in the public domain of Social Media and feels that something should be done about it. “Social media like Facebook and Google need to be regulated as a lot of dirty and filthy material is available on these sites and these affect the minds of the younger generation,” Katju spoke during an interaction with women journalists at the Indian Women Press Corps. “E...

To Have ‘Better’ Regulation Of The Online Content, Social Networking Si
2012-04-23 09:35:00 In order to have ‘better’ regulation of the online content, companies like Facebook, Google & Twitter may be soon asked to setup Servers in India. These dedicated servers in India will enable the Indian Government to intercept & remove content almost instantaneously. At least that’s the plan as Home Secretary RK Singh raised his concerns to US Deputy Secretary for Homeland Security Jane Holl Lute. We have already seen RIM being forced to have servers in India. Though RIM resisted bitterly, it had to eventually give in to the demands. It has however still not allowed ‘Enterprise Level’ data to be intercepted. How efficient will be the process? On technical terms, having servers in India will not affect the way ‘objectionable content’ is handled by artificial intelligence. But, Indian Government will have better arm twisting capabilities to get the content removed sooner rather than later. This issue of objectionable content has seen many twists & turns. Whi...

221 Bipartisan House Members ask OMB to Stop EPA?s Costly Regulation on Pow
2012-02-25 00:44:00 WASHINGTON, DC ? A bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives today wrote to Jeffery Zients, Acting Director of the Office of Management and Budget, expressing concern over EPA?s plans to regulate greenhouse gases at power plants through New Source Performance Standards. The letter, spearheaded by Energy and Power Subcommittee Chairman Ed Whitfield (R-KY) and Rep. John Barrow (D-GA), asks OMB to stop the rulemaking, which is currently under review. Members are concerned the regulation would lead to higher electricity rates and devastating job losses.Even after Congress rejected unpopular cap-and-trade legislation, the Obama administration is moving forward with greenhouse gas regulations. The proposed GHG standards would likely drive up electricity rates on struggling American families and businesses and threaten our economic recovery. The members wrote:?Affordable, reliable electricity is critical to keeping and growing jobs in the United States and such a standard will lik...

TRAI Delays Telemarketing Regulation Indefinitely
2011-03-21 05:35:00 We have been blogging about how TRAI is trying to tackle the issue of unwanted calls by instituting a separate number for telemaketers. But just like we saw delays one after the other for MNP and then finally a launch it seems this is also going the same wau. TRAI has put off the new rules governing unwanted telemarketing calls indefinitely. The new rules were to come into effect from today onwards but due to the lack of allocation of a specific number for landlines phones this has been delayed infinitely till a solution is found. DoT has already allocated the number series starting with ‘140′ for telemarketers using mobile phones but it is yet to give a number series for fixed line telephone. 2011-01-19 08:01:00 The Treasury Department yesterday released a report on “risk retention”. Health Insurance Rate Increase Regulation Announced
2010-12-29 00:26:00 The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a preliminary version of the regulation aimed at controlling "unreasonable" rate increases at the national level. The draft regulation requires carriers to publicly disclose any individual or small group health insurance rate increases higher than 10 percent. The regulation is still open to comment and subject to change. Double-digit increases will trigger a review by state or federal regulators to determine if they're justified. States will get the first shot at scrutinizing the rate hikes. If HHS determines a state lacks the ability to do a thorough actuarial review of premium increases, federal regulators step in. States are eligible for federal grants to bolster their review capabilities and 45 states have taken advantage of the program to date. This 10 percent threshold can be adjusted on a state-by-state basis over time. After 2011, a state-specific threshold would be set for the disclosure of rate increases, usin...

On the Road to greater healthcare regulation with President Obama
2010-02-23 10:04:00 Decades ago we thought public utilities were natural monopolies that needed regulation if we were to get competitive outcomes. Reducing media bias through regulation ¦ Vox [del.icio.us]
2009-09-18 14:22:00 [W]e show how advertising can seriously interfere with the quality, accuracy, and breadth of content and programming in the media (Ellman and Germano 2009). Biased content is most likely when competition amongst media outlets is limited or when advertisers are large and can threaten to withdraw their advertising business from the media. The analysis extends to media dependence on any business or state actors that can substantially affect media company profits. Analysing the delicate interaction between advertisers, financiers, media outlets, and media audiences within a two-sided markets framework generates new insights for policymakers. Our work points to the need for independent media and makes the case for promoting competition and public funding.

Winners from Federal regulation
2009-06-23 06:00:00 Congratulations to Neil George; long-known in the newsletter community for his expertise in income investing, the advisor has just launched a new blog service, Stocks that Pay You.He notes, "Most of the government 's proposed changes for the financial markets aren't new or needed; but what will happen will be a boost for some and a bane for others. Here, he looks at some winners and losers."In my view, tthese supposedly massive changes amount to window dressing. Banks and other related firms can continue to do what they've always done: cherry pick regulators and play off one regulator against another."So, unless we get the government actually empowering the guys down the line inside all of these agencies and departments, don't look for any big changes, because - while the players and the names might be changing - the contest is staying the same."The potential losers in this process will be some of the Federal Thrifts or FSBs that wi...
Ron Paul on Government Regulation Of Tobacco VIDEO
2009-06-16 22:32:00 Congressman Ron Paul - Moving Towards Tobacco Prohibition - Texas Straight Talk:Last week, another bill was passed and signed into law that takes more of our freedoms and violates the Constitution of the United States. It was, of course, done for the sake of the children, and in the name of the health of the citizenry. It?s always the case that when your liberty is seized, it is seized for your own good. Such is the condescension of Washington. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act will give sweeping new powers over tobacco to the FDA. It will require everyone engaged in manufacturing, preparing, compounding, or processing tobacco to register with the FDA and be subjected to FDA inspections, which is yet another violation of the Fourth Amendment. It violates the First Amendment by allowing the FDA to restrict tobacco advertising in multiple ways, as well as an outright ban on advertising any cigarettes as light, mild or low-tar. The FDA will have the power of pr...

Too much regulation hurt Fannie and Freddie
2008-09-16 02:08:00 I read perhaps 1,000 articles a day, sure I scan them quickly and sometimes don't get past the headline, but this article is good enough to read and re-read a couple times:Washington Post Blames Private Sector for Government Failures"But the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is hardly an indictment of the free market: Fannie and Freddie are ?Government-Sponsored Enterprises,? not products of the free market or the private sector."The writer goes on to tell the real story, of how government rules and pronouncements turned Fannie and Freddie into experiments in social engineering, and were not truly free market. If liberals and conservatives alike want Fannie and Freddie to be totally privatized, I'd be happy to get on board. But, leaving them flapping in the wind, and the hundreds of thousands of home buyers they would affect, for political gain is ridiculous when the government messed them up in the first place.

The Paradox of Capitalist Regulation
2008-07-25 21:57:00 James Schipper writes in the comments section:The historical record shows that wage increases eventually follow productivity growth. For instance, in 1960 South Korea was dirt-poor, and naturally wages were extremely low. By 1990, SK had become a prosperous country, due to massive productivity growth, and wages were also much higher. As workers become much more productive on average, they become more valuable to employers, who are therefore willing to pay them higher wages, for the same reason that a dairy farmer is willing to pay a higher price for a cow which gives 10,000 liters of milk per year than for a cow which gives 5,000 liters per year.It seems to be true that wage increases in the US have not kept pace with productivity growth in the last 3 decades. I have no explanation for it.It can't be doubted that the transition to a market economy in Russia was handled very badly. Such major changes should be introduced gradually. Just compare China's performance with Russia's in ...

Is More Regulation Always the Way to Go?
2008-07-24 02:00:00 Over in the US, Senator Obama has recently been talking about his stance on Cyber terrorism. While there were many interesting points in his proposals, I wanted to home in on his comments regarding the protection of national infrastructure. You don't need to be a technological genius to have figured out that computers pretty much run every aspect of our daily lives these days -- transportation networks, utilities, broadcast information... you name it. It's fair to say, then, that if you could find a way of compromising those computers you could really mess up everyone's day....

2008-06-06 13:18:00 You didn’t hear about this yesterday, I’m willing to bet. The Senate Commerce Committee met on Tuesday, trying to figure out what to do about the sharp increase in prices on oil. Exactly the opposite, and one that Soros must have been cheering… The Hill: Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) suggested that oil companies may be manipulating energy markets as Enron did in 2001, and that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Federal Trade Commission needed to more aggressively regulate all futures markets Do you understand?
