Republican Candidates

Are only surging Republican candidates subject to scrutiny?
2011-11-17 00:57:00
If I had access to Lexis/Nexis, I would love to do a search for how the media covered Barack Obama four years ago as he began his surge in polls (of candidates running for the Democratic presidential nomination”. As he emerged as the leading “non-Hillary” candidate, did scrutiny of his record increase? When Michele Bachmann ...
WTF - Republican Candidates Edition
2008-10-21 06:08:00
This may be old news, but somehow I just read about it today: PENSACOLA, FL. Asked for a reaction to the news that he'd been endorsed by reality-soap bad girl Heidi Montag of "The Hills," John McCain told Swampland: "I’m honored to have Heidi’s support and I want to assure her that I never miss an episode of 'The Hills,' especially since the new season started." Seriously? Seriously. That
Huckabee Drops Out; Prepares To Run Again
2008-03-06 16:01:00
On Tuesday, March 4, Mike Huckabee officially ended his bid for the presidency.  Huckabee won 8 primary contests (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, West Virginia).  He added that he will do whatever is necessary to get McCain elected, but his staffers already began preparing for a future run: Advisers to Mike Huckabee spent ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Huckabee Drops Out; Prepares To Run Again", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/03-/06/huckabee-drops-out-prepares--to-run-again/" });
Rove Talking Up Romney For VP
2008-03-03 03:08:00
Take this with a grain of salt since the source if Robert Novak, but there are reported whispers of a push for Romney to be McCain’s vp choice: A footnote: Karl Rove and other prominent Republicans are talking up a McCain-Romney harmony ticket despite personal dislike between the two presidential candidates. Romney also would have to ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Rove Talking Up Romney For VP", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/03-/02/rove-talking-up-romney-for--vp/" });
Russert: ?In A Survey, 11 People Referred To Hillary As A Bitch, So We Have
2008-03-02 23:11:00
This morning on Meet The Press, Tim Russert reached a new degree in sexism and shoddy analysis with a tortured segment on a recent Pew Survey. Russert’s introduction to the segment: MR. RUSSERT: […] Then Pew said, “Give us a word that you think best describes these candidates.” The first one was McCain. Dallas Morning News Endorses Huckabee And Obama; Bars Employees From Suppor
2008-03-02 19:42:00
You can breath easy now, the Dallas Morning News has re-endorsed Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama. With respect to Mike Huckabee, the paper recognizes that it’s mathematically impossible for him to win, but concludes: Whatever Texas Republican primary voters do Tuesday, John McCain is all but guaranteed to be the party’s presidential nominee. It is mathematically ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Dallas Morning News Endorses Huckabee And Obama; Bars Employees From Supporting Them At Caucus", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/03-/02/dallas-morning-news-endorse-s-huckabee-and-obama-bars-emplo-yees-from-supporting-them-at-ca-ucus/" });
John McCain Can Be President. Can We Let That Story Go?
2008-02-29 22:55:00
h/t to Goldfarb. I’ve been looking for the most condescending and thorough assault on the foolish idea that the “natural born citizen” clause in the Constitution would prevent McCain from running for president. I think I’ve found it. Yale professor Akhil Reed Amar demolished the argument earlier this month: The Constitution’s rule that the president be ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "John McCain Can Be President. A Taste Of McCain vs. Obama: Demonstrates That Obama Will Need Update Some
2008-02-26 17:43:00
Throughout the Democratic primary, Sen. Barack Obama and others advocating on his behalf have frequently cited his experience living abroad as a child as a boost to his foreign policy credentials. Early in the campaign in 2007, Obama argued that his experience abroad was a strength, saying: “If I go to Jakarta and address the largest Muslim ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "A Taste Of McCain vs. Obama: Demonstrates That Obama Will Need Update Some Of His Arguments", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/02-/26/a-taste-of-mccain-vs-obama--demonstrates-that-obama-will-ne-ed-update-some-of-his-arguments-/" });
Mitt Romney May Re-enter GOP Presidential Race, So Says His Son?
2008-02-25 23:55:00
Josh Romney, one of Mitt Romney’s sons, made some news by suggesting that his father could return this election cycle as either a vice-presidential candidate or as a presidential candidate (if John McCain’s campaign “falters”). Josh Romney is also mulling over a congressional bid in Utah’s second district.  I think Josh’s own political future is part ...
Huckabee Cameo on SNL

Mike Huckabee appeared on SNL last night: You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video You’d think he could have demanded at least one line about his candidacy, instead of only being the butt of the joke. Oh well. In other Huckabee news, he’s still refusing to run for Senate in Arkansas, despite ...

Huckabee Seeks To Deadlock GOP Convention (With Magic Number 666)

During an interview on a Texas radio station, Mike Huckabee outlined his strategy for winning the Republican nomination: “If we win Texas, I think it changes the dynamics of this race. It could well go all the way to the convention.If the convention delegates pick the president, chances are they would pick the most conservative. ...

NYT: John McCain Has A Lobbyist Friend
2008-02-21 23:32:00
Here’s the story. Here’s the story about the story. Conservatives are … what’s a good word … corybantic. Liberals are generally ignoring it. Was this published by the NYT or TMZ? Even if we assume there is fire for the smoke they report, there’s a reason the Lewinsky story was broken by Drudge.
McCain and Clinton Bought The Same Commercial Outline

The Washington Post has this fabulous chart of the connections of Mark Penn. Note that one of the employees of BKSH is Charles Black, who is a senior McCain advisor. The point here is brief: if it sounds like McCain and Clinton are saying the same things about Obama, they are. And that’s largely because their ...

Congressman Ron Paul Will Not Run as Independent Candidate
2008-02-10 12:41:00
The Associated Press reports that Congressman Ron Paul shared with CPAC members that he will not run as a 3rd party, independent candidate in the general election. HOUSTON - Presidential hopeful Ron Paul said he will not run as a third-party candidate in a new message to supporters that seems to recognize his slim chances at getting the Republican nomination. The Texas congressman wrote on his Web site Friday that he is making cuts to his national campaign staff and that he must also stay focused on not losing the primary for his House seat. Paul began Saturday with just 14 delegates for the Republican nomination that John McCain, with 719 delegates, has all but officially secured. Mitt Romney dropped out of the race Thursday, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has 198 delegates. A total of 1,191 delegates are needed to secure the GOP nomination.

Will the Suspension of Mitt Romney's Campaign Benefit Sen. Barack Obama?
2008-02-07 19:40:00
I was kinda stunned myself when I learned this afternoon that Mitt Romney suspended his campaign, leaving the Republican field to just two candidates--Sen. John McCain and Gov. Mike Huckabee.True Republicans are not happy either.  Many "true" conservative Republicans view Sen. McCain as a left-winger maverick, clumped with the likes of Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.Some would have believed that Gov. Huckabee would stand well, since he is the only fundamental conservative, but many Republican voters are not impressed with his poor immigration policy and lack-of-appearance as Commander in Chief.So I'm not sure how Romney suspending his campaign fares for the Democrats...does this help Sen. Obama?  Does this lead to an inevitable resurgence of voters joining the Democratic candidates, but purposely voting out Sen. Clinton because of their utter distrust and hatred toward her?Should be interesting to see how this settles.
Will Democrats Surrender to Terrorists? You Be The Judge!
2008-02-07 19:27:00
Not even conservative Republicans agree. Rush Limbaugh on Monday: On Mr. Limbaugh’s program today, he said people should not be rushing to back Mr. McCain over issues of national security. The talk host said America’s direction in Iraq would not be substantially different even if Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama were elected. “They are not going to ...
Mitt Romney to Withdraw at CPAC
2008-02-07 18:27:00
Rumors swirl around The Corner. It would not be surprising given how hard it would be for him to even force a brokered convention. Plus a powerful exit speech could lay the ground for a future run where he would start with conservatives in his corner and work to branch out from there, instead of spending ...
CPAC Participants Instructed Not To Boo McCain
2008-02-07 17:37:00
It’s worth noting that participants at CPAC are being instructed not to boo John McCain during his speech today: During registration last night at the Omni Shoreham a registrant was asking to upgrade his CPAC package and then proceeded to ask what time GOP front-runner John McCain was going to speak today. “Oh good,” he said ...
All you need to know about McCain?s visit to CPAC today
2008-02-07 10:18:00
McCain will pretend to agree with conservatives on a lot more than he does. Conservatives at the conference will pretend that he’s not the last line of defense against a parade of Ginsburg clones on the Court. It’s a marriage that is perfect for America - 4 years long, and that’s if everything goes right.

Five things to read as you ponder who to support tomorrow: 1. Mitt Romney flip-flops badly on the assault weapons ban over the course of a month and a half. This one isn’t even close. But I guess when you’re down three with 35 seconds left, you try to throw downfield, even if you might get ...
Huckabee Digging Deep For Money, Supporters Selling Personal Belongings To
2008-02-01 00:49:00
In terms of finances, Huckabee is certainly struggling. As of today, he’s only raised about $3.4 million of his goal of $10 million by Super Tuesday. For starters, Huckabee really needed this money at least a few days before Super Tuesday in order for it to make any effect. Supporters of his campaign ...

Pre-Florida Results Notes
2008-01-30 01:06:00
I was thinking this earlier, but Michael Crowley actually wrote it down and contextualized it. What if Obama out-performs polls in Florida? Clearly, that would be a big story after Clinton touted it so much. Of course, Clinton’s talk about seating the candidates probably allows her to not be worried about such a phenomenon, as ...

Giuliani Takes My Advice, Changes Theme Song

Yesterday, I criticized Giuliani’s theme song choice in lieu of him falling in the polls in Florida. From First Read (my emphasis): Giuliani began positioning himself as the candidate that can best fight terrorism and the struggling economy. He even entered the stage Thursday with a new song, ?Best of Both Worlds? by Van Halen. First things first: ...
Why Is Bloomberg Not Considered In Electability Scenarios?

Mike Bloomberg has dropped hints of running as someone who can fix bipartisan bickering and get things done. He gave a major economic speech in Washington today. People are more than happy to cover what Bloomberg is doing. But no one, and I mean no one, looks at Bloomberg in the context of election scenarios. He’s ...

Edwards? (Seriously Flawed) Electability Argument
