Madrid: Top five Cheapo-friendly restaurants
2009-09-22 17:12:00
Cervecería 100 Montaditos serves cheap sandwiches. Photo by Infollatus. By Cynthia Kane in Madrid— Although Madrid is a pricey city, there are still many restaurants that offer up great food at a low, low, price! From €1 sandwiches to prix fixe Argentinean dinners under €20, Madrid has your tastes (and your wallet) covered. Below you’ll find five of our favorite cheap Madrid restaurants. Glorieta de Montera Caballero de Gracia, 10 1- 3:45 PM & 8:30 - 11:45 PM Telephone: 91 523 44 07 Metro: Gran Via Glorieta de Montera, along with its sister restaurants La Finca de Susana, Bazaar, and Ginger, strikes an ingenious balance between fine dining and cheap eats. All three Mediterranean restaurants have classic, white, minimalist décor injected with just enough creativity to keep them from teetering into the banal. Polite staff and an ample, interesting menu may lead you to believe you’re going to get whopped by the bill, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised: fettuccini with...
San Francisco 2009

San Francisco was the last stop on our mini tour of California. We were staying in The Mission at Vinnie and Kristine’s place, the most perfect place to stay because Philz Coffee (multi-locational) is just around the corner. I first tried Philz coffee two years ago, when I was in San Francisco for the Nike ... Related posts:San Francisco Coffee
The French Laundry Was Not Everything I Dreamed it Would Be
2009-09-17 19:09:00
This post is extremely difficult to write, and I do it with great sadness. I don’t even remember how long I’ve been waiting to go to The French Laundry 6640 Washington Street, Yountville, CA 94599, often named as the best restaurant in the United States. It’s pretty difficult to get reservations, which ... Related posts:New Croque-Monsieur: Gruyere and Smoked Ham on Challah French Toast

Yank Sing 101 Spear Street, San Francisco, CA 94105 was a mind blowing experience for us. Good Chinese food with good service just doesn’t happen in New York. It’s something I’m not accustomed to, and for the first few minutes, it was awkward. They had my reservation and seated us promptly, handing ... Related posts:Peking Duck House
Rome Cheap Eats: Dine like a local at these affordable restaurants

Dining with the locals at Al Peperoncino. Photos by Claire Chaffey. By Claire Chaffey in Rome— When in Rome, want to eat like an Italian with the Italians? Want to escape overpriced tourist menus? Want to experience authentic Italian cuisine at the right price? Well, why not take the metro out of the historic centre and dine in the spots that only the locals know about! Here are three absolute gems that are less than 10 minutes from Termini Station. All of these spots offer authenticity at the right price, with a three-course meal, wine and coffee coming in at around 20 €. Pizzeria Dal Bersagliere Via Gino Capponi 16 Great dining on Via Appia Nuova. The fabulous little Pizzeria Dal Bersagliere in Furio Camillo is apparently, if you look at the photo above the cash register, good enough for James Bond. Sean Connery used to come here, it seems, and we can understand why! The restaurant offers an extensive menu including pasta, meats and salads, but the real reason to come here...

Waterbury Area Restaurants Reviewed in NY Times
2009-01-12 02:07:00
Big Time NY Times Wanders Into the Backwoods To See What the Woodchucks Are Eating These DaysMark Bittman, a writer for the Dining section of the NY Times Dining, must spend a good amount of time around the Waterbury VT area - he certainly knows the restaurants here, a couple of them off the beaten path for most visitors and even some locals. As his December 28, 2008 review shows, he is very impressed with Hen of the Wood restaurant, a very fine restaurant that was opened by a pair of chefs here in Waterbury about four years ago if memory serves. One of the chef's mother stayed with us while the two young men were working to get their new place prepared for opening so we got an early insight into what kind of place they were aiming to establish in a highly competitive market. As you can see by the newspaper's headline reference to "Backwoods" Vermont, many people come here expecting to be nearly on the edge of civilization, lucky to have a decent diner and maybe a couple of good ...
Friday Flash...Some French Restaurants I Ate At..
2009-01-02 11:52:00
While on my Paris vacation late November early December last year I visited a few restaurants mainly round the Montmartre and Abbesses areas. There are many restaurants catering to tourists surrounding Sacre Coeur and in the Place du Tertre.Just off the Place is a restaurant called Tartempion on Rue du Mont-Cenis.It has a very reasonable set menu or formule. For 15 euros you get to choose an entree, main and dessert.Other places set menus offered only a starter and main for a similar price so it was very good value.I'd recommend the thick hot onion soup served in a square white ceramic dish. The steak I had as a main came with a salad and loads of fries.I finished off with a big slice of apple pie.The place was interestingly decorated with a collection of fire extinguishers and what looked like industrial sized wooden cotton bobbins.Definitely worth a visit. The photo above shows a bistro La Maison Rose not far from Tartempion north of the Place du Tertre. The restaurant in a small pink ...

Restaurants with Playscapes
2008-06-10 07:35:00
One of the challenges we faced as new parents was what to do on those nights when you just need to go out and grab a quick bite – no time to plan for a sitter or make reservations. Nothing in the fridge, too tired to slice and dice, or an all too common scenario in our household: “Wait, I thought YOU were doing dinner tonight!?” When our child was a baby, this was fairly easy – pop him in the car seat, pop him into a high chair, and keep the zwieback coming. As he got older, it got harder. We of course insist on good manners, but what three and half year old (or four, five or six, for that matter) can sit perfectly still and quiet, even with crayons and a funny menu? Lots of them you say? Good on ya! Not ours! To preserve the family dining night out tradition, we learned quickly that a place with a playscape could accommodate our need for dinner out with a three year old’s need to get his ya-ya’s out. Austinites are particularly lucky in this regard, b...
Doha Restaurants: Thai Snack
2008-06-09 07:00:00
Whenever I enter Thai Snack and breathe in I feel like I have been transported back to Thailand. The aromas are exactly the same as they are in Thailand. That's not surprising, as all the staff in this busy little restaurant are Thai too. Even the neon sign looks like it could come from a Thai high street, while the trees overhead remind you of the Asian jungle. Here you can enjoy a meal outside in the slightly run-down garden by the water fountain (at least in the cooler months), eat in the restaurant or order a take away. Although the restaurant is always busy, the restaurant and its Thai staff incredibly efficient and normally your order is ready within minutes. And the food is probably the best Thai food you are likely to get in Qatar, from the spicy tang of Tom Yam seafood to the sweet but delicious Pat Thai, which you can liberally sprinkle with crushed peanuts for that authentic Thai taste. The restaurant is located at the bottom of Al Nasser Street, close Ramada signals. As y...
