For the third year in a row, I’ll also be sharing some of my big-picture ideas, strategies, and investing ideas in a special workshop. And if you’re planning on coming to the show, I hope you’ll attend! Of course, either way, I wanted to give you a . . . → Read More: Simple Steps to a Better Retirement Plan

Should You Buy Your Retirement Home Now?
2011-12-16 06:00:00
According to the Mercury News, there are 3 ways to use financing to buy that retirement home. As an owner-occupied home, a second home or as an investment. It certainly might make sense to buy now, if your retirement is 5 to 10 years away. That's because not much will change between now and then, except prices will eventually rise and so will interest rates. Interest rates dropped last week below 4%. In many areas of the country, prices are bouncing around the bottom and are at a historic low. I'm still trying to buy a vacation home on the beach. Just a small home on the ocean somewhere from central to northern California. That is one area of the country that is not really depressed. It's hard to find an affordable home on the ocean. But it's still an excellent time to buy a retirement home. Personal Savings: My Kid's College or My Retirement?
2011-06-30 14:30:00
In their middle class home, Marcus and Krisha enjoy dinner with their kids at the kitchen table, laughing about all the events of the day.  Staring at them is a stack of unopened and unpaid bills they have to tackle after the couple's finished washing the dishes and putting the kids to bed. When they've paid the last bill, they glance at each other with raised eyebrows because they'd hoped to have enough money left over to save toward their kids' college education. More so is Marcus and Krisha's desire to leave their jobs one day and live their dream of owning a restaurant together....

Retirement Should Be Retired
2011-03-21 09:00:00
I love technology. I love science and engineering and all the beautiful things they've created from maps of our genes to particle accelerators to indoor plumbing and cable tv.  When I think of the 76 billion people who have made their way through this world then consider how amazing it is to live in such a time it kind of scares me but what really scares me is how our technology and our abilities tend to outstrip our wisdom.  We haven't quite figured out how we fit into this society we've created. I've written about the new phenomenon of adolescence but as I've watched the fury of the political standoff between unions and bankrupt state governments it's occurred to me that my logic didn't go far enough--that while the 20th century created the extended childhood of the teen years it simultaneously created the other complimentary freak of nature: retirement. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that there is very little difference between adolescence and retirement.&nb...

Jerry Sloan abruptly announces retirement after Bulls defeat Jazz
2011-02-11 00:42:00
The news is all over the net, and Derrick Rose has sent his second coach this year to the unemployment line.   Granted, Sloan seemed to tire of the job moreso than to get let go by ownership, but I love the fact that Rose is the one pushing them in that direction.Apparently, a deteriorating relationship with Deron Williams caused him to leave:The increasingly contentious relationship between Sloan and Williams boiled over when they clashed at halftime of a loss to the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night. The showdown between Sloan and Williams became so heated on Wednesday, at least two Jazz players feared that the coach and star could come to blows - even though the confrontation ended before...

The Dutchman joined Man United on the 1st June 2005 from Fulham and to date, he has played 245 times for United. The biggest moment in his career at Old Trafford was when he saved the final penalty of the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow, which won the cup for United. Speaking to MUTV, Van Der Sar said: ?It?s been coming for a while,? ?After playing for so many years, you reach a point where you have to make a decision. ?There are a couple of things to consider ? whether you still have an appetite for it, your family. You have to look at yourself also. You have to ask if you can bring that top level of performance that you need at United. At the moment I am quite happy with my form and my achievements on the pitch. I just want to keep that on a high level. ?Y...

Reactions to Bobby Johnson's retirement
2010-07-14 23:34:00
Northwestern will start the season facing a team with yet another question mark. Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson retired today, leaving Robbie Caldwell in charge. Johnson said he wanted to do other things in live and said "football is not life." That's refreshing and glorious to hear, but maybe that is one of the reasons he went 29-66 since 2002.Robbie Caldwell will likely be the coach on September 4 when the teams square off, but it's obvious Vandy will use this to nail a top coaching talent with a big name. Pre-Snap Read takes a really good look at who candidates could be, but get it out of your head, you won't see Phil Fulmer on the sideline September...

What is the Teacher Retirement System?

Retirement doesn't have to kill your bank account, author Mark Miller says
2010-04-10 23:34:00
Image via Wikipedia By BOB ANDELMAN I?m going to turn 50 later this year. It?s a weird sensation, knowing AARP is prepared to invite me into its ranks, that I probably have fewer years ahead paying into Social Security and Medicare than getting money from Social Security and Medicare, that middle-age is finally, officially, about to catch up with my more salt-than-pepper thin hair and beard, that all the talk about preparing for retirement is no longer just talk. Whoa, slow down, Bob. You?re depressing everybody?yourself included. Next week, on April 15, 2010, I?ll even be attending the second day of the Florida Boomer Lifestyle Conference, which will be held in Clearwater at Ruth Eckerd Hall. It is designed to help us understand how the recession has impacted boomers. I expect to learn what they?re spending money on right now, which messages resonate most with them, and what they want from businesses today. Apparently ?more Early Bird Dinner Specials? is not the correct a...
