Robotic Surgery Lowers Risks of Side Effects
2008-08-05 17:50:00
Technology has long been used to help people do their jobs more efficiently and effectively, and that's not going to change any time soon. A new advance in this area is robotic surgery. CNN reports on the growth in usage of robotic surgery devices made by Intuitive Surgical, Inc., and reveals that patients who undergo robotic surgeries have fewer side effects and faster recoveries. The systems work by allowing a skilled surgeon to control the robotic arms using a joystick. The robotic arms are more precise than human hands and work with smaller incisions. As a result, robotic surgeries often have fewer complications. For example, when a patient's prostate is removed via normal surgery, there are risks of incontinence and impotence. Robotic prostatectomies, on the other hand, have much lower risks for those side effects, meaning that patients are less likely to suffer from decreased quality of life. While the results look good so far, the American Urological Association has...
Now, mobile robotic arms to manipulate objects with ?UMan?
2008-06-08 11:56:00
Washington, June 8 (ANI): Though robots moving around, doing household chores and fighting like humans is something limited to sci-fi films, scientists are trying hard to build androids that simulate humans in many activities. And they have taken a major step in this direction by creating a mobile robotic arm with the ability to “see” ...

Building An "Iron Man" Pt. II: Jet-powered, Winged Flight
2008-05-24 16:35:00
"It's just my job five days a week, A rocket man, a rocket man"; New technology brings superstrength, can more new technology bring exoskeleton based flight to complete the "Iron Man"?The summer's hottest blockbuster is the superhero flick "Iron Man" which stars Robert Downey Jr. as weapons designer turned superhero Tony Stark. In part one of this two part series, we looked at the advances made in building exoskeletons, particularly Sarcos Inc.'s new Sarcos suit which can lift over 500 lbs, is maneuverable enough to handle stairs, and can run 30 minutes untethered.Having a super-powered suit is great, but aside from his power, the comic book character "Iron Man" had two other key attributes -- speed and flight. Without it, Iron Man would go from a superhero, to just plain super slow.Fortunately there are some promising technologies to give the exoskeleton fighting suit of the future super speed and flight. This article, the second part of this two part series, seeks to examine...
Building An "Iron Man" Pt. I: Military Grade Exoskeleton
2008-05-24 16:29:00
Real life technologies mimics the comic books with breakthroughs in human exoskeletons. The summer's hottest blockbuster thus far has been Iron Man -- not even the runaway hit Grand Theft Auto IV could slow it down. The movie centers around a super hero using a high tech suit to perform heroic feats no ordinary man could. What's intriguing is just how close real life technology is to creating a slightly less insanely overpowered "Iron Man" suit.In the first entry of a two part series, this article examines the developments in exoskeleton technology from an enterprising startup recently acquired by a major defense contractor. The exoskeleton starts with a simple concept -- while large war machines like tanks and armored personnel carriers (APCs) are mighty weapons, they lack the maneuverability of ground soldiers and provide a large target. However, ground soldiers lack the strength to carry sufficient stopping power to take on heavy vehicles.Sarcos Inc. has taken this concept a...
A robotic brain-computer interface
2008-05-23 07:16:00
Brain computer interface might change the way we think.  (sarcastic) Here is how Wolf describes the project. “Our approach consists of implanting a small robotic device (and accompanying control algorithm) with many individually-motorized electrodes that each autonomously locate, isolate, and track a neuron for long periods of time. To further complicate matters, we wish to find ...

Put out the three missing podcasts that are owed. We will see if this comes to fruition.

Calgary woman recovering after robotic arm removes brain tumour
2008-05-19 15:23:00
According to Sympatico Tech News, a woman in Calgary, Alberta, Canada had a brain tumor removed by a robotic arm!Paige Nickason, 21, was discharged from the Foothills Medical Centre after surgery Monday by Dr. Garnette Sutherland of the University of Calgary."Paige's brain surgery represents a technical achievement in the use of image-guided robotic technology to remove a relatively complex brain tumour," Sutherland told a press conference."This is wonderful and represents the beginning of something new in surgical care," he said."I had to have the tumour removed anyway, so I was happy to help by being a part of this historical surgery," Nickason said in a press release on Friday.Mimic surgeon's movementsThe two mechanical hands of the robot, known as NeuroArm, mimic the movements of the surgeon with incredible precision while sensors and microphones recreate the sights, sounds and touch of surgery.A surgeon is able to control the robot using levers at a computer workstation in a ...

Robotic Exoskeletons
2008-05-16 19:09:00
From CNN comes news of a robotic exoskeleton being developed for the military. This isn't the first time I've seen reports about the military's plans for this sort of thing, but it is the first time I've seen an advanced demonstration and up-to-date information. Technology like this could go a long way toward keeping our soldiers alive in dangerous situations, but it could also do more. Imagine if a group of a hundred or a thousand relief workers equipped with this technology could be deployed following a major disaster, such as the recent earthquake in China. Combing through the rubble in a powered exoskeleton would be much faster, and could save a large number of lives by getting to trapped people sooner.
Are Humans Safe with Robotic Coworkers?
2008-05-14 15:27:00

Some of the latest, smartest robots with artificial intelligence aren't encaged but are able to sense humans thereby avoiding an accidental crash. But even
Robotic sailboats and accelerating change
2008-05-14 04:27:00
The Microtransit Challenge. This is a testament to Moore's law. Ten years ago this was 100% science fiction.  Five years ago someone could talk about it.  2006 they held it on a lake. This year its across the Atlantic. ...and it's at hobby prices. One of the entrants, the Pinta, cost the competitors £2,500.  Umm...you could build it in your garage if you had the programming chops. Big deal you say, it's just a glorified model sailboat.  Well yes and no.  Yes they look like simple little sailboats but they've got: Solar power, automated sensors, GPS positioning and course navigation software.  They obviously have a much simpler algorithm than the DARPA Grand Challenge cars, but still need to get from point A to point B. Also this technology will be a boon to climate science.  At £2,500 a pop you can make hundreds and send them out into the oceans and go anywhere and report back anything you can imagine.  A mobile science buoy....

Artificial mouth could be robotic taste-tester
2008-05-07 03:44:00
An artificial mouth was recently developed that has the ability to chew food similar to a human, making it a good robotic taste-tester to better understand flavor. When food is chewed, it releases compounds which affect taste. Using speed motors, mechanical teeth, and a pipe pumping "enzyme-containing artificial saliva", the mouth-bot is an almost-living, breathing (via helium, anyway) mastication machine.
