Book Review: Historic Walking Guides Edinburgh by Andy Hayes
2009-09-19 15:03:00
Edinburgh is one of my very favourite European cities and that’s not just because I’m Scottish, so I was looking forward to reading and reviewing Andy Hayes’ Historic Walking Guides Edinbugh. As Andy says, Edinburgh is fairly compact so exploring the city on foot is a great option. Edinburgh skyline from Calton Hill by europealacarte The ...
1836 chapel painting revives Holy Grail quest
2009-09-17 01:00:00
An unusual painting has emerged that seems to present fresh evidence of the fabled history of Rosslyn Chapel. The figure of a Templar knight is shown standing in front of a staircase at the back of the Midlothian chapel, which features in Dan Brown’s best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code. Symbologist Ashley Cowie believes that the staircase ...

Ailsa Golf Course at Turnberry Resort, a British Open legend
2009-07-21 17:55:00
The 2009 British Open is now in the books and golfers are looking forward to the PGA Championship, which is hurried along in order to make more room in the schedule to accomodate the $10 million Fed Ex Cup. The season is going by way too fast for this lover of the sport! I cannot watch four days of phenomenal golf without ever dreaming about what it would be like to visit Turnberry Resort, and play golf on the revered Ailsa Course (pronounced "ale-sa") where Tom Watson nearly made history for the sixth time in his career! I'm sure though, that my score would not reflect my true potential! Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson's 1977 "Duel in the Sun" brought Ailsa to public view as a golfing destination but it has been the stuff of legends way before that! Read Robert Burns' poem, Tam O'Shanter, and you will begin to immerse yourself in the folklore that surrounded Scotland as early as 1790.The wind blew as 'twad blawn its last; The rattling showers rose on the blast; The speedy gleams th...

The Kellie/Kelly Pearl the largest freshwater pearl ever discovered in the 2,000-year history of the Scottish pearl industry, was found in 1621 in a tributary of the river Ythan in Aberdeen shire, and was later presented to King James VI, who got the rare jewel incorporated in the Scottish Crown, together with other pearls, rubies, diamonds and amethysts already on the crown.
Plastic Surgery on the Upswing -- In Scotland
2009-03-11 19:33:00
I came across this article from Europe, noting the increased plastic surgery volume.  This of course is a bit of a surprise, as the economy generally takes its toll on all elective medical procedures.  Here is a reprint from the Scotsman newspaper ---IN these times of belt-tightening and cutbacks, you would have thought cosmetic surgeons would be left twiddling their scalpels. But it seems the credit crunch is actually providing an unexpected boost for the industry, with the number of people in Edinburgh undergoing expensive cosmetic surgery – particularly breast enlargements – on the rise. Some experts even believe the hike could be down to a determination to look and feel good in increasingly competitive work environments. The number of Edinburgh women undergoing breast enhancement surgery rocketed by more than 20 per cent last year, according to the Transform Cosmetic Surgery Group, which carried out 324 procedures at its clinic on Great Stuart Stre...

Britain?s largest casualty of the international turmoil in the banking sector has been the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) which only survives at all because it has been bailed out by the British taxpayer with Government ownership now at 70%. Scotland and a great end for a hard month
2009-01-02 21:10:00
December was awful. Actually, everything started on late November. Andre got a winter bug, and was vomiting for 3 days. Then, was Filipe's turn: high fever and vomiting. Renato started his new job on December, 1st and on his second week he was poor. On his 3rd week he received a letter from his doctor to stay at home for the whole week. I was sick as well, with a strep throat that triggered an asthma crisis... I went to my office 4 or 5 days in December: always on sick leave, or child sick leave or working from home. We started to get better on 24th, and after a whole month stuck in our house, we decided to do a small trip. Well... not too small - 1000 miles driving... We visited the Sherwood Forest, Skipton, the Lake District, South of Scotland (Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle, Edinburgh and Peebles) and finally Hadrian's Wall and Durham Castle. Here are the pictures... I hope you enjoy

New tastes
2008-06-15 10:33:00
I am indebted to two good presbyterian friends for improving my palette. First, some years ago, Gordon introduced me to the delights of single malt whisky. Gordon had acquired the taste when his employers put in a new computer system for the Distillers Company. I now drink it when i can afford it from time to time. Islay malts with their peaty flavour are my favorites, plus Talisker from Skye but I will drink any Freemans :-) i am no expert. Do single casks really taste superior to cheaper malts?Bill then introduced me to Belgian beer. IMO English beer is good to quench the thirst, but Belgian is for sipping and savouring. Here is what i brought back from Belgium.Deugniet 7.3%Petrus Goulden tripel 7.5%Chimay Peres Trappistes Tripel 8%Cookie 8%Scotch Silly 8%Vicaris Generaal 8.8%Abbey - Abdij du Val - Dieu Triple 9%Abbey - Abdij van Leffe 9%Balthazar 9%La Trappe Quadrupel 10%The so called Amber Nectar can be put back in the billabong folks. English votes on English matters - Unique Powers.
2008-06-09 11:07:00
Why is the question of English votes on English matters so difficult to sort out? We've had Malcolm Rifkind's Grand Committee, which it is argued will only add another layer of government. Now after a lengthy process Ken Clarke comes up with another bloody stupid idea. From the Telegraph: He (Ken Clarke) is said to have advised allowing all MPs to vote on English legislation at the initial second reading stage of parliamentary scrutiny. But only English MPs would get to vote during the detailed committee stage of the legislative process, where real changes can be effected. At the third and final reading, all MPs could once again vote, but a new parliamentary undertaking would prevent any party using Scottish votes to block amendments made by English MPs.Why oh why can't we just stop Scottish MPs voting in England on any matter that would normally be devolved to Scotland? In other words - any subject that English MPs are not allowed to vote on in Scotland. Surely that would be a f...
Muslims plan Gaelic translation of Koran
2008-06-08 18:21:00
The move drew a frosty response from the main Gaelic church in the Western Isles. Rev Iver Martin, the minister of Stornoway Free Church, said: "I wouldn't have thought there would be much of a market for this. I'm not sure that a lot of Gaelic-speaking people would be inclined to read it. Of course, Muslims have the freedom to do what they want, but it's worth pointing out that in many Muslim countries, Christians do not have the freedom to freely read the Bible."

The Great Kilt Conspiracy Debunked
2008-05-18 23:11:00
Lord Dacre, esteemed authenticator of the Hitler Diaries, debunks Scottish Myths in his book The Invention of Scotland: Myth and History to be published five years after his death. Sounds like a policy paper for an English Nationalist party.?In Scotland, it seems to me, myth has played a far more important part in history than it has in England.?Indeed, I believe the whole history of Scotland has been coloured by myth; and that myth, in Scotland, is never driven out by reality, or by reason, but lingers on until another myth has been discovered to replace it.?He claims that the ?myth? of the ancient Highland dress was perpetuated by historians to provide a symbol by which Scots could be universally identified, as well as to support the country?s textile industry. The traditional dress of the Highlanders was in fact a long Irish shirt and a cloak or plaid, he states, and only the higher classes had woven in stripes and colours creating tartan. How will Alex and the boys be able to per...

Greetings from Bonny Scotland!
2008-05-13 18:58:00
After my temporary resurrection from my sick bed, to make last week's peanut butter torte, I hope you'll all give me a break about opting out this week. I went from my sick bed to the airport last Wednesday night and flew off to Edinburgh with E to visit my best girlfriend. A good time was had by all and with the help of some spicy curries and fabulously decadent cocktails, I was soon feeling right as rain again.  All in all we had a lovely long weekend and enjoyed Edinburgh at its most beautiful, under sunny and cloud-less skies, a pleasant surprise and a rarity according to the locals.   I have several addresses to share with all you food connisseurs, but want to give them the full praise that they deserve, so I'll be posting about them later this week. In the meantime, please stop by the Tuesdays with Dorie blog to find out what all the other TWD bakers got up to!
