Quade: Forget a move to second base for Starlin Castro
2011-04-30 07:35:00 There has been much talk lately in the media regarding Starlin Catro's place in the line-up and even his position. Most of the talk was started by White Sox announcer and WSCR/Comcast Sports Net baseball analyst Steve Stone. That talk will end with Mike Quade. Quade doesn't see a move in Castro's future, and he doesn't see one in Darwin Barney's either. Quade says Castro will be fine at shortstop and doesn't think Barney's best position would be there. "First of all, Starlin is going to be a real good shortstop, and if I didn't believe that it might be worth a conversation," he said. "As good as Barney is at second, I'm not sure how good a shortstop...
Top 5 Cubs Second Base Prospects
2010-02-04 08:25:00 This is the third part in a series of position-by-position looks at the Cubs top prospects. Previous entries can be found below:Top 5 CatchersTop 5 First BasemenListed after each player is their age for the 2010 season and the level at which they ended last season. 1. Logan Watkins, 20, A- BoiseEarlier this season I would have had LeMahieu in this spot, and the change reflects more on me losing some enthusiasm about DJ rather than gaining a great deal about Watkins. More on that in the next section. In any case, Watkins is a fine prospect himself, packing a great deal of athleticism into a small frame. Currently listed at 5 foot 11 and 170 pounds, Watkins is just a year...

2008-04-12 05:29:00 The Bank of England's monetary policy committee (MPC) has announced that it is to cut the base rate of interest, it has been revealed. Many graduates think that the six months they have before the required scheduled repayment of their various college debts seems like forever. The six months is nothing compared to the years and years of payments ahead of you. A consolidation of student loans can make the monthly much less painful. Read more about finance and student loans.

Durham winning second base job in San Francisco camp
2008-03-15 12:59:00 If there's still officially a competition at second base for the Giants, Ray Durham is winning it. Durham is hitting .387 to .226 for Kevin Frandsen, who was sidetracked a week when the Giants experimented with him at shortstop in Omar Vizquel's absence. Does Durham believe it's a competition?"No, I don't, to be honest," he said. "As a starter, unless somebody comes out and just flat out beats you for that job. ... But still, I'm a veteran guy, and I was always told to let veteran guys play and that when your time comes (as a younger player), it's going to come. That's the way it is."

Rockies | Baker getting back on track in second base competition
2008-03-11 21:13:00 MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports Colorado Rockies IF Jeff Baker, who is in the mix for the starting second base job, has hit .286 with a home run, five RBIs and two doubles in Cactus League action. He's appeared in four games at second base (one start) and has also been used at first base. Baker (elbow) is making up for lost time, as he missed out on some playing time early in camp due to a bruised elbow. If he falls out of the competition at second base, he's in good position for a bench job due to his hitting and ability to play multiple positions.

Draft Guide: Second Base
2008-02-04 16:25:00 Second base, long considered one of the two most shallow fantasy positions (along with catcher), will be the subject of the third of our baseball draft guides. The first issue to keep in mind with second baseman is that you're probably only going to be carrying one of them on your roster, except in the most esoteric formats. There may be a useful multi-positional player who you keep around to eat up spare days, but for most leagues, this isn't going to be a position you stock up on. Even in set-ups that call for a middle infielder, due to the overall depth at SS this year, it's unlikely you're going to want to have on your roster multiple 2Bs. There's also approximately zero chance that you will want to play a second baseman in your UTIL spot. Finally, except for the top five or six selections, there isn't much deviation from the mean amongst second baseman. With a limited number of enticing mid- or late-round talents who might realistically hit 20+ home runs or steal 25+ bases...

Why bad kissers don't get to second base
2007-12-04 06:12:00 Bad kissers -- we've all locked lips with one: the lizard, the washing machine, the cannibal, the spelunker. "I knew this girl that I'll call Big Tongue," recalls Craig Hinkle, 38, a Westminster, California-based network administrator. "Her tongue was massive, and she insisted on trying to put the entire thing in my mouth. She was very forceful with it, and I started choking." You can guess that relationship didn't last. And now, what Hinkle knows from experience is actually backed up by science: Bad kissers have little chance of getting to second base.

Final Second Base Rankings
2007-10-09 02:54:00 The second baggers are up next in the Baseball Lab's multi-part look into the top performers at each position.Biggest Surprise - for the first time we find the biggest surprise also being the top performer. Many in the analytical community, including myself although I don't consider myself quite in that community, took Brandon Phillips' 2006 performance with a grain of salt. Yes he hit 17 HR and drove in 75 in 149 games, but his on-base percentage was very low a .324, a warning sign at the least. The Consensus Projections had him pegged as not fantasy worthy (26th) at .263, 58 R, 11 HR, 47 RBI, and 14 SB. The Cincy second bagger came out of the gate fairly strong hitting 5 HR and driving in 16 in April alone. He was good throughout the season finishing with 30 HR, 107 R, 94 RBI, and 32 stolen bases while maintaining a very good .288 batting average. It is likely that had Chase Utley avoided a late season injury Phillips would have been the #2 rated second basemen, but that doesn...

2007 Position Battle: Second Base
2007-03-09 04:49:01 Atlanta BravesCandidates:Kelly JohnsonMartin PradoEdge: Kelly Johnson--Johnson lost last season to Tommy John surgery, so he has some questions to answer during spring training, especially on the defensive end since he is switching from the outfield to second base. Assuming he can field the position well enough and turn the double play, his plate patience and solid power should win him the job over Martin Prado and earn him a roster spot as a middle infielder in NL-only leagues.Colorado RockiesCandidates:Kazuo MatsuiJamey CarrollEdge: Kaz Matsui--After two failed seasons in New York, Matsui was traded to the Rockies last June and hit .345 with 19 RBI and eight stolen bases in 32 games. He secured the everyday job at second after Jamey Carroll had a terrible month of August and is the frontrunner to remain there (and serve as the team's leadoff man) this season. He'll battle Carroll during the spring, but the smart money is on Matsui keeping his job and Carroll becoming the team's...

Ranking Catchers and Second Baseman
2007-03-04 10:28:02 I have compiled some catcher rankings and second base rankings. To me, the catcher position is like the tight end in football. Take one of the top 3. After that its truly a crap shoot and even if you find someone good, they are likely to be inconsistent and at best, still not give you great value. So let me get the catchers out of the way so we can move on to bigger and better things. And some words of advice: In a snake draft, if you can get value by drafting Mauer in round 5 or higher, take him. If you can get Victor Martinez in round 7 or higher, take him. If you can get McCann in round 7 or higher, take him. Otherwise, wait until, lets say, round 23 and select a number of these sleepers who may end up being the #4 or #5 catcher when its all said and done:David Ross He hit 20 hr last year in limited action. At this thin and unpredictable position, take a flier on him. I already have in one draft in round 22. (Why take Michael Barrett or Jorge Posada 10 rounds earlier?)Josh Bard .3...
