Shakespeare: 'What is past is prologue.' Current TV: 'This is Keith being
2012-01-05 15:28:00 Fouling the air at Current TV.NYT's Brian Stelter: The broadcaster Keith Olbermann is famous for estranging himself from his bosses, be it at ESPN, Fox or MSNBC.At his new home, Al Gore?s Current TV, he has done it in record time.Mr. Olbermann, who was hired last year to be the top star of the upstart liberal news source, had been on the job scarcely three months when trouble started. He declined Current?s requests to host special hours of election coverage, apparently out of frustration about technical difficulties that have plagued his 8 p.m. program, ?Countdown.?The channel decided to produce election shows without him. Mr. Olbermann, however, said he did not know that, and on Tuesday, the day of the Iowa caucus, the cold war of sorts reached a flash point. He held a staff meeting even though ?Countdown? had been pre-empted.Perceiving it to be an act of defiance, David Bohrman, Current?s president, wrote a memo to Mr. Olbermann?s staff telling them that the anchor had long ago g...

Review "HAMLET": Being in the Room with Shakespeare!
2011-02-20 19:42:00 His father was murdered. His mother married the killer. His girlfriend is playing hard-to-get. Why so glum Hamlet? DreamLogic TheatreWorks presents Hamlet, performed in promenade. Hamlet is in mourning. His uncle/step-dad wants hit him to snap out of it. His mom struggles to soothe her husband's and her son's mood swings. His girlfriend's father assesses that Hamlet is a nut job. At her dad's insistence, Ophelia breaks it off with Hamlet. Despite seeing a ghost, contemplating suicide, and being dumped, Hamlet is focused on getting his uncle to admit to the assassination. He contracts a traveling theatre troupe to perform a play of deception and betrayal. In between sniping at his ex, Hamlet observes the discomfort of his uncle's theatre experience. The show doesn't quite have Hamlet's anticipated happy ending. His uncle admits only one thing, like father like son, death is the simple solution. The body count rises as life spirals into a stabbing-drowning-poisoning-sta-bbing fa...

2011-01-27 05:00:00 Ambition. Paranoia. Revenge. Political desires lead to a spiral of destruction and death. Chicago Shakespeare Theater presents Short Shakespeare! Macbeth, a 75-minute adaptation of the Shakespearean classic. A witch predicts Macbeth will be Thane then King. She also predicts Banquo's sons will be King. Macbeth shares the prophesies with his wife. Lady Macbeth concocts a plan to expedite the process by murdering the current King and framing his staff. The Macbeths murder for the crown. A killing spree ensues to ensure retention of the throne. Although the power-hungry Macbeths are never satiated, their evil acts begin to gnaw at their sanity. Victim apparitions and bloody hallucinations plague their grip on reality. Short Shakespeare! Macbeth is a riveting adaptation with killer visual effects.
How Many Words Did Shakespeare Know?

This argument was repeated with a third, fourth, fifth sample, and so on. Each sample corresponds to discovering a new and different complete works of Shakespeare. For each sample, it is possible to estimate the number of ...

Doctor Who teaches Shakespeare?
2009-12-20 19:45:00 As I watched the Doctor Who Special "Waters of Mars" last night on BBC America, knowing that it was the harbinger of the end of David Tennant as the good Doctor, I got kinda choked up. I was cheered up, though, by twitter friend @Pippsta who sent me a link to this video! In it, David Tennant plays a Scottish English teacher taking on former 'companion' Catherine Tate who plays a student. If you've seen Tate's comedy show, it's a character that she revisits frequently. The skit was put on for the UK's Comic Relief 2007 and is a classic:...

Nere...

Shakespeare and Edmonton School of Ballet
2008-08-17 05:30:00 Having to spend much of the summer in Edmonton to take care of my mother and to attend to my brother?s estate, we tried to make the best of it by registering the girls in appropriate summer camps. The first was Tigana's participation in the Free Will Players "Shakespeare in the Park" week-long, half-day camp. It was well done and we appreciated the attempt to introduce Shakespeare to youngsters. The theme of this year's camp was "Shakespeare's Clowns", with the children doing bits from "As You Like It" (probably a good choice, since the other play they were doing was Richard III.) We all enjoyed attending the matinee performance of As You Like It, which was very well done; I was disappointed by the low turn out for this excellent production, but am told mutinees are often sparsely attended but that night time audiences were quite satisfactory. The second was the Edmonton School of Ballet's intensive summer camps. These ran for two weeks, culminating in a performance at the Meyer...

Romantic Tradition and Shakespeare (with special reference to 'As You Like
2008-03-15 09:23:00 The play ‘As You Like It’ was adapted from a romance in prose called ‘Rosalynde’ by Thomas Lodge. The play was in the romance tradition and at the same departure from it.Disguise and mistaken identity were also the techniques that Shakespeare borrowed from the romantic literature. These techniques brought confusion in their wake and also resulted in humourous situations. They also enabled Shakespeare to focus attention on the theme that in this world appearances are often deceptive.Shakespearean comedy owes the concept of poetic justice to romance literature. Everything according to the satisfaction of everyone --- well-rounded conclusions with only an occasional dissatisfied human being left as if to suggest that life doesn’t lend itself to such cut and dried solutions and cannot be seen in water-tight compartments. For example, Malvalio in ‘Twelfth Night’, Jaques in ‘As You Like It’.The individual additions made by Shakespeare:INTRODUCTION OF SUB-PLOTThe sub-plo...

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
2008-03-11 13:12:00 Being so, three playwrights had the ambitious idea of putting all of his works melted in one single play together: tragedies, history plays, comedies and even a few poems. ...First: gather your fellow writers and go over the plays, trying to make at least one sentence for each one of them, cutting out all the boring lines – no exceptions. ...But since humor is a complicated matter even today, when different countries seem to have their own sense of comedy, imagine trying to make people laugh with centuries old jokes. ...The actors did what they know how to do with excellence, the public laughed, but I must say that as I read so many newspaper reviews on this show as hilarious and brilliant, I imagined something more uh, let’s say, classy. I wasn’t expecting to be brought to laughter only for the puking, farting, Beyonce and Britney Spears dancing style imitation and for some tired sexual jokes, but instead I was expecting bright jokes and inspired bridges ...

Shakespeare Sonnet 106
2008-02-29 14:21:00 SONNET 106When in the chronicle of wasted timeI see descriptions of the fairest wights,And beauty making beautiful old rhymeIn praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,Then, in the blazon of sweet beauty's best,Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,I see their antique pen would have express'dEven such a beauty as you master now.So all their praises are but propheciesOf this our time, all you prefiguring; And, for they look'd but with divining eyes,They had not skill enough your worth to sing:For we, which now behold these present days,Had eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise. This sonnet addressed ‘to his dear friend’ is number 106 in sonnet sequence consisting of 154 sonnets. A number of his sonnets are addressed to ‘W.H.’ and others to a mysterious person, often referred to as the ‘dark lady’. W.H. has sometimes been identified with the Earl of Southampton, one of Shakespeare’s closest friends and patrons, to whom this poem is addressed. In this sonnet, S...

William Shakespeare - An Author of the Bible?
2008-02-10 11:56:00 Seems like an outrageous idea — but there are indeed some a strange coincidences involving Shakespeare and Psalm number 46 in the King James version of the Bible. Here s the first: William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564. This tells us that he would have been the age 46 during the year 1611 — for almost 4 months. This was the same year that the King James version of the Bible was published. Secondly, take a look at Psalm 46 from the King James version. What exactly is the 46th word? Psalm 46: To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. The Reduced Shakespeare Company (2000)
2008-01-23 00:05:00 A.k.a. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). I heard an interview with Adam Long on NPR a few years back, and immediately added the film to my Netflix queue, but only now it arrived in mail. Damn, I have a long queue! The plot: the Canadian trio performs on stage 37 plays by William Shakespeare in 90 minutes. The summary: this is a hilarious show, an attempt to perform all known Shakespeare’s plays in under an hour and a half, engaging the audience (and viewers). The show is outrageously funny. It reminded me of a Monty Python’s Flying Circus episode where Shakespeare’s plays, including Macbeth, were performed using hand-, flag-, light-signals and telegraph without saying a word. Cracked me and my friends up. When the DVD stopped, everybody could not believe that was all - they wanted more. Well, the trio has also released “The Complete History Of America (Abridged)”. There’s a scene where they rap Othello’s monologue. The...
