How China's Birthday And Shanghai's Expo Are Good For The Legal B
2009-09-09 12:58:00
I have to admit one of my favorite things is forming a China WFOE for foreign companies. I love them because co-blogger Steve Dickinson and our Chinese affiliated lawyers do all the work. I also love them because it is the rare WFOE that does not also need real estate, labor law, and IP assistance to go with the new company. They often require additional work as well, such as contracts, environmental compliance, government approvals, etc. In other words, the forming of one WFOE is almost always the forming of a long term and fruitful legal relationship. Which is why I have to admit to loving China's 60th Birthday celebrations and Shanghai's upcoming Expo. Please allow me to explain. Every time China has a big event, (see the Olympic games for past proof), it starts tightening up on visas. Over the last few weeks, we are hearing more and more about foreigners getting stopped on the street or in their apartment lobby! So why is this a good thing for my law firm? Becaus...

Shanghai As World Financial Capital? Maybe Next Century.
2009-05-31 17:59:00
Just finished a fascinating article in Atlantic by Richard Florida, entitled, "How The Crash Will Reshape America." It makes some very interesting points as to why Phoenix and Las Vegas (and large swaths of Florida) may never recover and why New York, Austin, and Seattle (yeah), will do just fine. But within it, and of great relevance to this blog, is a section on why New York will remain as the world's financial capital and why, despite the projected growth of Asia's economies, we should not expect Shanghai, Hong Kong, or anywhere else to usurp it. At least not for an exceedingly long time. At first glance, few American cities would seem to be more obviously threatened by the crash than New York. The city shed almost 17,000 jobs in the financial industry alone from October 2007 to October 2008, and Wall Street as we’ve known it has ceased to exist. “Farewell Wall Street, hello Pudong?” begins a recent article by Marcus Gee in the Toronto Globe and Mail, outlining the po...

How will you improve your return on investment in the new economic climate? China Economic Review has invited leading experts to talk about issues and solutions from the unique perspective of investment in mainland China. This half-day interactive and case study-oriented conference will provide valuable knowledge and practical advice on how to optimize your FDI strategy and increase returns ...
Shanghai Shokudo Fukuan + SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2008-12-25 14:12:00
This is it. At long last, it took me almost 6 years to find this, but I knew it existed. Chinese pop music lightly playing in the background, chefs chattering in Mandarin, crappy decor, AUTHENTIC HOME-STYLE CHINESE FOOD. Don’t let the dirty alley location fool you, this is no hole in the wall to be ignored. At long last there is a contender to China Cafe 8. The menu may be half the size, but the portions are of absurd proportions. There were days when I almost felt like begging for real Chinese food in Tokyo. The smell, the busy kitchen, a restaurant full of Chinese customers! How I tired of ebi chili and mabo tofu, but NO MORE. It’s as though someone in heaven knew my desired meal budget and my desired tastes, and granted my wish. You’ll be hard pressed to find a meal that won’t leave you feeling stuffed to the brim for over 600 yen. That includes a soup, Chinese pickles and the main dish(depending on what you order). My first dish was pork fried rice, an o...
Finance People. Shanghai Says Jobs, Jobs, Jobs.
2008-12-16 08:42:00
There is a fairly prevalent theory that the best time to start a new business is during a recession/depression. I buy that. During tough times, established companies often disappear, get overly cautious, and lay off scads of good people, who can be hired relatively cheaply. During tough times, big shifts can occur. A few months ago, I pretty much scoffed at the idea of Shanghai becoming a financial capital, in a post, entitled, "Shanghai To Replace New York As World's Financial Center. I Don't Think So." Though I certainly am not convinced, I certainly am not scoffing either. To use a bad pun (particularly during this bear market), China is grabbing the bull by the horns and seems to be boldly making moves to increase its worldwide standing as a financial center. My best friend from college, attorney-editor-author, Jacob Margolies (b/k/a "THE Cob") was kind enough to send me the notes from his interview of some of the people who came from Shanghai to help lead a group of Ch...

Shanghai To Replace New York As World's Financial Center. I Don'
2008-10-01 12:28:00
Interesting Washington Post article by Ariana Cha, on how Shanghai might eventually replace New York as a world financial center. The article is entitled, "Financial Hubs See an Opening Up at the Top: Wall Street's Long, Dominant Run Is Fading, Global Financiers Say," and it talks about how Wall Street is falling and others are rising, and it devotes much of its ink to Shanghai. Trendsniff also has a good post on this. I do not see Shanghai becoming a top tier financial center within the next ten years. In ten years, New York and London will still be the World financial centers and Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo will still be the big three in Asia. I could write a long post on why I think this is true, but it would be far easier for me to simply state that I see knocking New York and London off their thrones as the equivalent of knocking Mercedes and BMW off theirs -- it is just too difficult. Will Shanghai be a top one, two or three financial center within the next ten year...
Same Again In Shanghai
2008-09-13 10:36:00
There was no Shanghai Surprise. The only surprise was that some thought it was going to be any different. It could have been worse though, that was the one consolation for the few South Korean fans who, late Wednesday evening, had sat through a typically turgid Korean Derby. 1-1 was the score between the near neighbors in their 2010 World Cup qualification match in China. There were less than 1,000 fans present in Shanghai's Hongkou Stadium - a far cry from the 25,000 plus that watched March's match. Apart from the loss of the novelty factor as well as the will to live, the main reason for the difference in the fact that North Korea hiked ticket prices by around 500% for the cheapest tickets -the 'hosts'(the game had been moved from Pyongyang to Shanghai after communist authorities in North Korea refused to fly the southern flag and play the anthem) didn't want their fans to be as heavily outnumbered as before. The tie was the fourth straight stalemate between the two rivals in 2...
Shanghai Surprise? Not Likely...
2008-09-08 14:01:00
South Korea restarts its journey on the road to South Africa and the 2010 World Cup tonight in Shanghai. Pyongyang was supposed to be the location but the qualifier against North Korea has been moved to China as the communist authorities in the DPRK capital refused to fly the Taegukki or play the Aegukga. It is the final round of qualification for the quadrennial football-fest. South Korea has participated in the last six tournaments and failure to make it a magnificent seventh doesn?t bear thinking about for footy-lovers in a nation that is currently bananas about baseball. The loss of prestige, sponsorships, experience, money and jobs would hit Korean football hard. Ten Asian nations, in football terms this includes Australia, have been split into two groups of five. The top two in each group automatically book their berths in South Africa. The two third-place teams face each other for the right to take on Oceania?s representative, probably New Zealand, in a winners-takes-all play...
China For Business Goes Beyond Beijing And Shanghai.
2008-09-04 17:52:00
China Business Blog just did a post on China's best cities for foreign business, appropriately entitled, "New Cities On The Block." The post starts out discussing a recent Forbes Magazine ranking that sets out China's "Best Places in China for Business," as follows: 1. Hangzhou 2. Ningbo 3. Dalian 4. Shanghai 5. Wenzhou 6. Beijing 7. Suzhou 8. Wuxi 9. Shaoxing 10.Shenzhen The Economist Magazine's Business Intelligence Unit, did its own China city ranking, based on economy, "market opportunities," labour market, infrastructure, and environment (mostly air quality) and its top ten ranking was as follows: 1. Shanghai 2. Guangzhou 3. Beijing 4. Hangzhou 5. Nanjing 6. Shenzhen 7. Tianjin 8. Qingdao Xiamen 10. Ningbo 11. Suzhou 12. Fuzhou Chengdu Dalian 15. Shanghai Museum

Visiting museums should actually be one of the top must see of tourists when visiting new places. You get to sense the culture, history but most of all, you can check out cool artifacts. I am actually fascinated about museums but I seldom go because either no one wants to go with me or it’s really out of the way. When we went to Shanghai, I knew I had to go because the structure itself looks enticing enough. Shanghai Museum is actually a museum of ancient Chinese arts. Featuring a lot of furnitures, art masterpieces, old coins & money, clothes, I pleasantly scanned the interesting pieces. However I still like the feel of going to Forbidden city to glance at “how it was“. I want to walk the steps they took long before and imagine being there. (more…)
Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai
2008-05-19 07:42:00
The Jade Buddha Temple (Jade Buddha Chan Temple) is a Buddhist temple in Shanghai, China. As with most modern Chinese Buddhist temples, the current temple draws from both the Pure Land and Chan traditions of Mahayana Buddhism. It was founded in 1882 with two jade Buddha statues imported to Shanghai from Burma by sea. These were a sitting Buddha (1.95 metres tall, 3 tonnes), and a smaller reclining Buddha representing Buddha’s death. The temple now also contains a much larger reclining Jade Buddha, donated from Singapore, and visitors may mistake this larger sculpture for the original, smaller piece. Chine is best place to travel. GPS vacation destination: 31° 14′ 36″ N, 121° 26′ 25″ E

90 Minutes From Shanghai To Paris (Ningbo)
2008-05-09 07:35:00
Well, not quite, but the Shanghai to Ningbo bridge is the world's longest cross-sea span and it cuts the drive from Shanghai to Ningbo from 400 km to 80km. CLB's own Steve Dickinson just returned from Ningbo, having travelled there from Shanghai to meet with a client who is setting up a manufacturing plant there. I asked Steve what he thought of it and here is his response: The bridge was truly amazing. It is not like a bridge. It is like a very long, straight road. Just like the Beijing airport: the impossible, done quickly and well. Query: why can they do these things and then not be able to put the right paint on a toy? There is reason at the bottom of all this, and I think pricing and profit margins play a role. Anyone else been down that bridge yet?
