We both commented on how it is illegal, and then we started talking about inflation. Skype is illegal in China, of that there can be little doubt. The real question arising from this recent pronouncement is what will this actually mean for Skype in China. I am not a techie, but after talking with a number of people who are, I see the following as the possible repercussions: 1. Nothing. China will not change a thing regarding Skype. I actually see this as the most likely outcome. I predict China will not "shut down" Skype because those who most often use it are those whom the government wants to keep in their corner. Having given RIM a 60-day reprieve from a ban on Blackberry messaging traffic, Indian authorities have now set their sights on Google and Skype. As they did with RIM, authorities in the country are demanding access to data that flows across Google’s and Skype’s servers. BlackBerry’s owners, Canada based Research in Motion, were given time to assess the feasibility of the interception solutions they had offered. The solutions covered BlackBerry Enterprise Server as well as BlackBerry Messenger, the two services that so far cannot be intercepted by intelligence agencies, and which they fear could be misused by terrorist elements. The Home Ministry had told the Telecom Ministry that if the security concerns were not addressed, the service should be stopped immediately. Skype Files For IPO – EBay’s Plans Finally Come Through
2010-08-11 08:10:00 Skype, one of our favorite technologies to make free internet calls, is going to make an initial public offering. Skype S.A. announced that it has filed a Form S-1 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering. However, the price range or the number of shares have not yet been decided. Many companies like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Barclays Captial, amongst others, have been named as book-runners for this offering. This is not really a surprise considering that EBay, Skype’s holding company, has not achieved escalating its sales through Skype since it bought Skype about 5 years back. In 2008, it was reported that Ebay was planning to sell Skype if things did not go according to plan. Government Gives RIM, Skype the Two-Weeks Notice.. Google Gets A Warning!
2010-07-01 08:05:00 In what seems to be a blast from the past the Indian Government has once again set it’s eyes on BlackBerry maker RIM’s services for security reasons. What’s more is that this time it has pulled in Skype and Google too. The DoT has said that it will approach the companies and ask them to ensure that data transferred through their services is available to Indian Security Agencies. While RIM and Skype will be given a 15-day deadline to comply, Google will also be contacted to ensure that Gmail follows suit. They have not been given a specific deadline as of now. After a meeting of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Intelligence Bureau, National Technical Research Organization and the Department of Telecom it was also decided to make changes in the existing IT laws. According to these changes, foreign companies will have to provide data to Indian Law Enforcement Agencies. The decision to issue deadlines to RIM and Skype were taken at this same meeting. Skype Calls for ‘Ubiquity’: Mobile Video Calls
2010-06-16 10:08:00 In a new move to increase its user base, Skype has showcased its new software which will allow users to make video calls from their mobile phones to web enabled TV sets or computers at CommunicAsia, a technology tradeshow in Singapore. Currently this service will be available only on Symbian phones. Skype has tied up with Sony Ericsson to enable the VoIP software on the Satio, Vivaz, and Vivaz pro devices. The app will be available for download either directly from Skype or through Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow Arena. Skype has also entered into an alliance with Verizon promising to bring Skype to a range of Verizon’s dumbphones. This will be a great advantage for Skype as it will be the first one to bring non-smartphone users in Skype’s who are not being distracted with many other apps anyway.
