From the AP Wire: updated 4:34 p.m. PT, Mon., Dec. 8, 2008WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - A white social studies teacher attempted to enliven a seventh-grade discussion of slavery by binding the hands and feet of two black girls, prompting outrage from one girl's mother and the local chapter of the NAACP.After the mother complained to Haverstraw Middle School, the superintendent said he was having "conversations with our staff on how to deliver effective lessons.""If a student was upset, then it was a bad idea," said Superintendent Brian Monahan of the North Rockland School District in New York City's northern suburbs. The teacher apologized to the mother who complained and her 13-year-old daughter during a meeting Thursday that also included a representative of the local NAACP. But the mother, Christine Shand of Haverstraw, said Friday she thinks the teacher should be removed from the class."I think the teacher should have gotten some discipline," Shand said. House apologizes for slavery
2008-07-30 04:09:00
WASHINGTON - The House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws. “Today represents a milestone in our nation’s efforts to remedy the ills of our past,” said Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. The resolution, passed by voice vote, was the work of Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, the only white lawmaker to represent a majority black district. Cohen faces a formidable black challenger in a primary face-off next week. Congress has issued apologies before — to Japanese-Americans for their internment during World War II and to native Hawaiians for the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893. In 2005, the Senate apologized for failing to pass anti-lynching laws. Five states have issued apologies for slavery, but past proposals in Congress have stalled, partly over concerns that an apo...

Politically Correct Plaque Attack

Army Insect Robots (Coming Soon)
2008-05-09 07:40:00
Source: The Register Global military contractor BAE Systems has announced that it will lead a large alliance of American academics in building an army of miniature robots to aid the US military. The effort, known as Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology (MAST), will receive $38m of US Army funding. ?Robotic platforms extend the warfighter's senses and reach, providing operational capabilities that would otherwise be costly, impossible, or deadly to achieve,? said Dr. Joseph Mait, MAST supremo at the US Army Research Lab. The horde of robots scraped the pork barrel clean The idea is that a variety of crawling or flying mini-droids will be produced, able to go into situations where human troops might fear to tread - caves, bunkers, mountains, hostile urban areas etc. The robo-bug army would then spy out targets and intel for human commanders to act upon. Under MAST various enabling technologies will be advanced: "small-scale aeromechanics and ambulation; propulsio...

Uses range from building access and laptop security to identity cards and passports. However, there are concerns about the storing of biometric data and its possible misuse. Continued read more

Plagiarism, rhetoric, slavery
2008-03-31 02:38:00
I found out that two days are enough to take a rest from posting. I did not write anything during the last two days, I took a vacation from thinking what to write. Actually, an excuse for me to do some other things. During the weekend I checked the papers of my students, a thing that most teachers hate to do. Some students are really smart and brilliant enough but there are also those who pretended to be so. Some did their papers hardly and honestly, but there are also those who plagiarised their papers. I hate plagiarism, but students simply plagiarise. So I can't do anything except giving 'F' grade to plagiarists.Anyway, let me go back to my sanity. Last Saturday I joined a theology discussion which is popularly called "Bible study" with my regular suport group at Asian Theological Seminary. This group began in November 2006 with a handful of jaded Christians and non Christians alike (Evangelical, Catholic, Agnostic, and Atheist) from different fields of interest (film, law, th...
