Facebook Finds India Essential: Golden Age Of Social Networking?
2012-02-06 09:01:00
Mankind’s basic need is to stay & feel connected. This is echoed perfectly in Facebook data analyst, Inside Facebook Gold’s 2011 data which revealed that India was the third biggest Facebook market after US and Indonesia. In terms of growth rate, at 162.4 per cent, India is second only to Brazil. No wonder, Facebook finds India indispensable. We tried to analyze the reasons: Orkut was the pioneer of Social Networking. Facebook, which still respects Orkut, however, swept the ground from under its feet. We think, owing to Orkut’s cluttered interface & growing menace of SPAM, users, slowly but steadily shifted towards the simpler & fun to use interface of FB. On the other hand, Google+ may be growing, but it has still to go viral in India. Guess FB has the first mover advantage here? One might say, Orkut pulled-in the crowd & Facebook kept them engaged! FaceBook has always maintained a streamline approach & “The Wall” concept was simply brillian...

Females Spend More Time On Social Networking Sites Reveals Report
2012-01-05 07:43:00
Paying close attention to gender behavior comScore has reveal-ed in a report that females ranging from the age of 15 and above spend more amount of time on social networking sites. Though the relative importance of social networking varied across regions, women were found to be consistently more social on the Web than their regional male counterparts. The variation could be attributed to overall cultural differences, but the fact remained consistent. Social Networking’s reach among women was highest in Latin America, where it reached 94% of females online. The case wasn’t that dissimilar in North America & Europe saw their female populations visit a social networking site & stay active for approx. 2 hours. Meanwhile in Asia Pacific, where many regions still face low broadband penetration and site restrictions, the number of women active was a surprising 55%. On reading this, many of our users must have checked their friend list, like I did.  Honestly speaking, ...

The Best of TPREG 2011

“Best of…” lists are never easy to compile. What constitutes a “best” blog post? Number of comments, Likes, or Retweets? Number of visitors? Ones that make the phone ring with paying clients (YES! Social Networking Fueled By Mobile Internet: Android Apps Fueling The Trend
2011-12-30 07:23:00
More than 300 Million or almost 40% of Facebook’s users are accessing the site using Mobile Apps. If the data from a recent report of Benedict Evans prepared for Enders Analysis is anything to go by, users of largest Social Networking site Facebook are increasingly accessing the portal through Apps on various mobile platforms. This trend is primarily being attributed to increasing use of iOS & Android apps. Earlier in September, Facebook had confirmed the number of monthly active mobile users to be 350 Million, thereby making Facebook one of the most mobile-optimized online service. However, this number includes mobile web users as well as users of its mobile apps. Mobile Web users are those who access Facebook through browsers on their mobiles. In this case, a mobile-optimized version of Facebook is displayed or accessible. Breaking down the numbers,  Evans reports that over 100 Million from the iOS & Android community, from the total of 225 Million, have installed the ...

According to Hitwise, the the top ten keywords punched into Google & other search engines, consisted of four variations of heavy-weight Facebook – Facebook.com, Facebook, Facebook login and of course www.facebook.com. Search & Social Networking The Top Two Uses Of Mobile Internet, Reports
2011-12-21 14:16:00
India is the fastest growing market for mobile devices and poised to become the largest market. Internet penetration is also increasing rapidly and the number of people accessing internet on their phones is at an all time high. Smartphone prices are dropping and that promises to make mobile internet more lucrative in the days to come. We have earlier spoken a lot about mobile advertising and how a data usage on phone is fast outstripping the traditional usages, like calling and SMS. Now we will look at what ‘we the people’ actually do when we are connected to the internet through our phones. Opera Software, the company behind the popular Opera Mini mobile web browser, conducts an annual survey to determine the most visited and popular websites which people visit from the mobile web browser. As was expected search and social networking were two top verticals. User-generated content is another vertical which gained a lot of momentum in 2011. Wikipedia, Spaces and Blogger (the blo...

Social Networking Sites Lowering Productivity, Says A New Survey
2011-10-12 14:15:00
Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, MySpace & many others have long been part of our lives. However a new survey conducted by Ponemon Institute has revealed a rather disturbing “fact”:  Low employee productivity and reduced information technology (IT) bandwidth are the biggest reasons for the rise in the use of social media at work. The “Survey” comprising of only IT & IT security practitioners across 12 countries including US, UK, France, Germany, India and Brazil “confirmed” in large majority of 90% that use of social media at work hits the productivity of employees, while 73% said it resulted in lowering the available IT bandwidth. The reasons supporting these allegations were lack of IT policies, especially for Social Networking Sites. About 39% of organizations surveyed, did not have a policy that informed employees clearly about the acceptable use of social media at workplace and in the ones that did, only 49% respondents said the policy was actually enforced. Niche Social Networking Bridges Demographics and Advertisers
2011-08-14 13:31:00
We feel the need to belong, to form a part of a group who make us feel wanted, and loved and understood. And what better place to do that than the Internet? We’re not suggesting you stop going out more often, but there are increasing signs of “like-minded” individuals e-huddling together and carrying out activities which are of common interest, and this is where niche social networking steps in.  By targeting a specific audience, a niche social networking site is able to create an automatic bond between people. Niche social networks center around a specific hobby or activity. Which means if you like planting cactus in your garden; chances are you will take help from the Internet, where you will most probably find a bunch of like-minded people who prefer cacti to lilies or roses. Someone who is deeply obsessed with the same idea has already created some kind of interactive forum or web page where fellow cactus-lovers unite, and voila, a “niche” is created, which will be t...

You read that right, nearly 75% of Indians are more concerned about their social networking account getting hacked as opposed to their personal information getting stolen or their credit card being misused. The survey was aimed at understanding the online security needs of Indian consumers. Other findings of the survey were one fourth of Indians had been a victim of cyber crime over 90 per cent Indians realize the importance of Anti-viruses 62 percent of Indians feel that their job is done once they install an anti-virus on their PC The very low figure of just 5% of Indians being worried about their credit card info being stolen indicates that even though ecommerce sites are flooding the Indian internet market, very few Indians actually use their credit cards online. The report finds that Social networking is the most preferred activity of mobile phone users. Facebook is the most used social network in India, UK and other western countries while vKontakte is used by people in Russia and other CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent states). Even though Facebook is used by 42% of mobile users in India it only accounts for 27% of all pageviews. Personal Social Networking Sites Help People Avoid Privacy Issues
2011-01-12 06:30:00
There is no denying the fact that we have nothing to compare with Facebook and Twitter when it comes to social networking. In spite of that, sometimes the privacy issues and the unrelated clutters of these sites bug everyone and give them a pain in the wrong place If it has been your wish to get rid of those, then there is nothing that you can do except creating your own social networking space that allows you to connect with your friends and acquaintances. And doing that is quite simple. There are as many as 40 web-based services that allow you to build your own social networking site. By doing so, you can add or remove features that you want or hate. Facebook And Twitter Were The Most Unsafe Social Networking Sites In 2010
2011-01-10 06:30:00
While many of us are rejoicing over the ways Facebook and Twitter have changed the way we connect to our friends and acquaintances, there is a lurking danger of we possibly losing some of our valuable information or assets sooner than later. Internet Security major PandaLabs in its 2010 Annual Security Report has revealed that Facebook and Twitter were the most unsafe social networking sites last year. In fact, every social networking site became a victim of the wrath of privacy in 2010. Just as social media booms, privacy breaches also increase manifold. PandaLabs has said that social media sites are the perfect working environment from cyber criminals since most of the internet users have more trust on these sites than on traditional online sites and tools such as chats and emails. Its report revealed that apart from Facebook and Twitter, others like LinkedIn and Fotolog have also been affected. Some of the several techniques that the cyber criminals employ to hack Facebook and Tw...

Social Networking On Mobile Expected To Keep Growing In 2011?
2011-01-04 05:15:00
Social Networking has seen a sudden boom in India during 2010. A lot of this is due to the use of social networking services through smartphones. Analysis Mason has revealed that the number of users in India who use social networking services on mobile web would reach 72 million by 2014. The major factors behind this are the receding cost of smartphones and data charges. Smartphones running on Android are being manufactured by Indian companies also, which is allowing the price of smartphones to go down in the country. Micromax, Intex and Olive Telecom are the companies worth mentioning here. Google’s Android has revolutionised mobile communication, according to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. To ride this growing trend, social networking companies are launching apps to make it easier for users to use their services on smartphones. LinkedIn India country manager, Hari Krishnan, said, “A new application for the Android platform from LinkedIn will provide users of this fas...

Stop the Facebook Foolishness: Social Networking Resolutions for 2011

I don't mean to be Debbie Downer, but I've got some news for you, Kyles Files family. New Year's Eve is not going to be anywhere near as great as you want it to be.The overwrought evening to come will involve excess in one or more of the following elements: Confetti. Annoying party horns. An overpriced soiree.Intense feelings of shame because you did not purchase tickets for an overpriced soiree. But there is a light at the end of this hell-i-day tunnel. It's the New Year's resolution.Though maligned by some, I embrace the midnight oath as a way of saying:"Hey, this year, I've got a shot at being a better person." Some of us should take that shot a little more seriously, particularly...

Recap 2010 : Social Networking
2010-12-30 03:30:00
If you thought Social Networking was big in 2009, you should have seen it 2010. Last year, Social Networking/Social Media was plain vanilla Bruce Wayne(in a manner of speaking), this year it became Batman – gadgets et al and went mainstream. Social Media dominated dinner table conversations – and I’m talking about tech non-savvy 30+ year olds. Chintoo, Mintoo, the family elders, Mom and even the Post Office all got on to Facebook. Idiots..er people even washed their dirty linen over Social Media. But on a slightly more serious note. 2010 was an extremely eventful year for Social Networking. It did everything from fighting crime to recovering money to organizing protests. Twitter shone, Facebook shone even more while Google toiled away with little success. Facebook started with the year with 350 million users and ended it well on its way to 600 million. Twitter after touching 50Million Tweets per day early in year had notched up an impressive 106 million users by ...

Paul puts it best when he states, "what really struck me, though, was knowing that the lines didn't represent coasts or rivers or political borders, but real human relationships." Alas, the Internet and social networking continue to amaze!

Quacku – A new Social Networking tool to integrate Facebook and Twitter

For those of us tired of shuffling from one social network to another – Enter Quacku. Quacku, ‘in its alpha stage’,is a simple web based tool to manage your social networking from one place. Developed as a hobby, the website is currently capable of integrating your Facebook and Twitter accounts. With Flickr on the way. I gave it a whirl for a few hours and here’s what I thought User Interface The UI is simple, similar to old twitter. Unlike a lot of other aggregators which keep different social networks on different tabs. Quacku incorporates them into a single stream. This can be both good and bad depending on how you look at it. Usability The website is very easy to use. It takes barely a few minutes to setup a new account and start using it. And once you’re done, all the action is on a single page. Features This is one area where the tool has not really broken any new ground. It does, however, attempt to add an extra social layer by allowing you to follow user profiles....

Twitter Revamped – Not A Social Networking Website?

Saying that Facebook has become an important platform for social networking would be a big understatement. Having a fan page meant marketing new products through the social networking giant without having to make too much of an investment in marketing, while at the same time ensuring massive penetration through the fans of the page, as well as their friends. So what would be the next logical step for any brand or company? Shopping through Facebook of course! Facebook is now a major platform for “Social” Shopping. Price To Pay For Social Networking – Identity Theft
2010-08-19 09:19:00
Social networking is a craze for everyone in the country. These days, when you meet someone new, usually the first question is, ” Are you on Facebook / Twitter?” (Orkut might be a part of the question only if your new acquaintances are unfamiliar with social networking faux pas) LinkedIn is another social networking website which may get a mention if the meeting is on a professional front. Some of us might deny it, but such websites have become an important part of our lives for the sole reason of networking; be it with friends, family, or people in your field of work. But what is the price we are paying for putting all our information on these websites? The answer to the question above is identity theft. The most recent victim was Nobel prize winning economist Amartya Sen. Mr. Sen is just one more in the long list of celebrities and high-profile individuals in India who have had to face identity theft on social networking websites. Facebook Will Dominate Orkut In Social Networking In India – Was Ther
2010-08-19 07:15:00
It’s been well known across the web, that no matter how popular Facebook is, there are two countries where Orkut still dominates – India and Brazil. Around a year back, WATBlog had posted an article on how Facebook was coming close to overtaking Orkut. Over the last one year, the migration from Orkut to Facebook has been steady. If Alexa’s stats are anything to go by, the time spent on Orkut has steadily been decreasing – down by 10% in the last three months. There are a few reasons I believe Facebook will trounce Orkut. 1. The popularity of a social networking site is not just based on how many people it has, but how frequently they engage with others on it. Over the last 2 months, my Facebook feed had around 300 annoying updates every day. Compared to today, when I finally checked my Orkut account (after over 3-4 months) and there were 2 upadtes. 2. Talk about Social Networking online and it’s Facebook. By cleverly eliminating Orkut from the global sc...

Online Gaming Industry Advances Through Social-Networking
2010-08-17 07:20:00
The Indian Gaming Industry foresees immense growth in online markets with the existence of as many as 52 million potential internet subscribers. The fact that social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut, MySpace, etc. have roped in millions of users, drives gaming firms to constantly develop new games and improvise on existing ones. Social games have managed to lure all kinds of consumers ranging from teens (eligible ones) to the elderly. The 60 year-old mother of Alok Kejriwal, co-founder of Games2Win, is one such example who belongs to the older audience segment and is an addict of Zynga’s Farmville where she buys virtual gifts for her online friends. There are as many as 15 million Indian Facebook users and about 50% of them enjoy gaming applications leaving a potential market of 7.5 million consumers if not more to be tapped. This is exactly the reason why major game developers consider social networking as the key motivators of their growth in India. It also proves a point a...

Google Acquires Slide – Take Another Step Towards Social Networking

Google in its official blog post on Friday confirmed the acquisition of Slide Inc, one of the world’s leading community-driven entertainment company. Slide founded by a PayPal veteran Max Levchin has been a pioneer application developer for popular social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. Though the terms of deal are not fully disclosed, many analysts believe it to be in the range of $182-184 million. However, for many who find this move in sync with Google’s recent investment in FarmVille parent company Zynga, this acquisition does not come as a surprise. In its announcement Google said that “We’re working to develop open, transparent and interesting (and fun!) ways to allow our users to take full advantage of how technology can bring them closer to friends and family and provide useful information just for them,”. Women giving shopping second priority is something men would never fathom in their dreams. I might be targeting the stereotype with the previous statement but it is no myth that women love to shop. And now with shopping just a click away, they should be more indulged in shopping that ever before. Right? The site not just serves as a digital babysitter, but also offers a chance for kids to connect with their existing friends and also to build a network of new friends. Not just that, kids can also enjoy Facebook like features that are harmless and secure. All this and more is made available primarily for children aged between 6 to 10 (kids aged under 13 can sign up too). It must be mentioned here that it is the parents or trusted adults who do all the social networking deeds on behalf of their kids. Togetherville is linked to Facebook, thereby adults who possess a Facebook account can sign up and register their kids. Social Networking Or Trading? India Chooses Social Networking
2010-07-15 10:43:00
The answer to this question seems pretty simple. Social networking keeps you in touch with your friends and also, most definitely, helps you utilize your time to the fullest by doing pretty much a lot like liking your friends comments/status’, updating your status, or “poking” some friend. On the other hand you got trading, which if done meticulously, will ensure a good inflow of money. The decision is simple and India has made the choice, and it has chosen social networking. According to a study, India has 1.7 crore Demat account holders, while there are 3.1 crore Indian users on Facebook, Orkut, and Twitter combined. For the less informed, Demat means a dematerialized account which is used for Indian citizens to trade in listen stocks or debentures. A citizen obtains a Demat account on registering with an investment broker. The growth of Demat account holders is a meager two lakhs as compared to two crore new mobile connections every month. Throw into the mix all the new pho...

My Social Networking Death
2010-06-08 17:06:00
I'm offski.I've now had my fill of social networking, mainly because it's part of the reason behind the lack of progress on the ol' Top Ten Glasgow Guide over the years. So I'll be closing my pages on Twitter, mySpace, Facebook (including our For the Love of G...lasgow podcast page), Bebo, Friendfeed, LinkedIn, and any others I find lurking about the milky ether. To those who care for such things, I appreciate that this is all pretty drastic stuff, but having wasted too many precious hours trying to extend my reach across the world, I want my life back.Yes siree, it's time once and for all to give this site the kick up the proverbial it needs, and my aim is to do whatever it takes to continue its rise to the dizzying heights it's always been destined to reach (ahem...). Mission statement ends - time to work.

2010-04-07 08:59:00
Comscore has released a report that measure social networking engagement across countries in Asia Pacific (excluding china). The statistics make for interesting reading. Check the chart below which shows the percentage of internet users using social networking, their number of visits and time spent. As the chart above shows India isn’t as engaged in social networking as some of the other markets. But as mentioned above this report doesn’t include cyber cafe’s or mobile access which given both the cybercafe penetration and mobile penetration which is over 500 million phones. With mobile phones being launched with the sole usp of being social phones I believe more and more access will be driven by phones. But nonetheless given this fact the numbers of 13 visits a month per user and 2+ hours per month are interesting numbers to say the least. The clear leader in social networking across the asia pacific is facebook. See the chart below: India is still lead b...

2010-01-27 14:06:00
Social Networking has become such an essential part of people’s lives that it seems difficult to imagine how people actually managed to keep in touch without the Facebook poke or that once-in-a-while @ tweet. It should come as no surprise that social networking is on the rise and is growing at a phenomenal rate. What should come as a shock is the information that time spent on social networking sites has gone up by a whopping 82%. The blog of the Nielsen company has shocked the globe by the data that globally, people spend more than 5 and a half hours on social networking sites. This statistic, gauged in Dccember 2009, seems huge when compared to the same statistic in December 2008, which registered slightly over 3 hours. Note, this is time that people spend, and not the number of visitors. The traffic to these sites has also seen a remarkable increase. In 2008, Nielsen reports 242 million unique visitors (243,039,00). That’s gone up to 307.4 million. (307,428,000) &nd...

I Am Now a Full-Fledged Social Networking Whore
2009-12-01 14:30:00
Not my hand--too daintyEarlier today I was updating my status on Facebook before zipping over to my LinkedIn to check a message from a possible networking "connec'" before I hauled ass over to Twitter to post the latest news that I pulled a surprising amount of lint from my navel earlier in the day, when suddenly I realized I hadn't checked out the latest article on StumbleUpon or even been to Yahoo! Buzz or Digg to find out what the latest news from the blogosphere was about what was in the news today. That's right: Once a proud champion of the written word and complete paragraph-length thoughts that accumulated to say something larger about the nature of our world...
