Ning Launches Apps’ Services For Its Array Of Social Networks –
2009-09-14 13:08:00
The app fever refuses to die down and so is the buzzword in Web 2.0 scenario, even Ning. The white label social networking giant has launched apps service for its networking portal. Ning had earlier launched the App service for Admin profiles and also notified the expansion of apps one month earlier. The new app platform would allow network administrator to implement the apps on their networking sites and thus harness the true potential for their social networks. The app platform is based upon OpenSocial, supported by Google and thus could see a flurry of other apps introduced on the portal. In the beginning Ning would have only 90 apps but expect the numbers to ramp up seriously. Ning in recent times has been building up on features to fight competition from similar services like multiply. The company recently received another $15 million at a valuation of more than 750 million. The introduction of application would provide it a big boost as in recent times launching a ...

Digital Criminals Preying On Social Networks
2009-08-31 18:44:00
Its important to be aware of your surroundings and suspicious activity at all times, whether you are crossing a highly trafficked street in Manhattan or posting your profile to a social network. All the same rules apply and then some. Letting our guard down online creates greater risks as an alarmingly high proportion of users are prepared to be 'friends' on social networks with people they don't really know.
Koobface: The saga continues
2009-08-14 00:49:00
The gang behind the Koobface worm has been hard at work in releasing the next iteration of their worm. We've already identified over 60 active domains spreading the content through the usual method of posting a message linking to a "CooooL Video" on Facebook. Sample malspam: After clicking the link, the victims are automatically redirected to a Koobface controlled server, which then routes the them off to a fake codec site specifically designed for the social network they came from. Fake codec site: The Koobface gang uses the same old "Flash Player upgrade required" tactic to trick users into opening the executable, which then ultimately transforms their machine into a distribution point for the infection to further propagate.  Koobface connection log: On infection, the Koobface worm immediately attempts to download three additional exectuable files. After turning the victims computer into its next distribution point, it also attempts to monetize by...

By The Numbers, Facebook Trumps All Social Networks?
2009-06-28 16:21:00
Statistics often color our perceptions, and in the sphere of social networking this is most certainly true. We like to make assumptions based on the numbers. However, most often when 'pacing' is omitted from the equation, we lose our perspective as to what the numbers are really telling us. Is Facebook the dominant player in social networking or does its growth numbers tell us something more about where it will be a year from now?

Spark.ly, the Dungeons & Dragons of Social Networks?
2009-06-06 14:45:00
Spark.ly describes itself as the "definitive social and economic ecosystem that empowers people around the world to communicate, engage in commerce and have fun in a culturally aware and profitable virtual environment." With a launch date of June 9, 2009, nobody knows yet whether that description is an illusion, bravado, grand self-promotion or truly the next big shiny thing. To date there are no blogs written, no product announcements, and no press releases to alert the media. One would think with a June 9th launch date, Spark.ly should be 'sparking' a few conversations out there? Or is this part of their master marketing plan to create buzz about their emerging online kingdom?
Social networks for sales
2009-06-05 23:51:00
Doing contract work for a hosting company, I realize the difficulties in targeting quality traffic. It’s a competitive market, meaning companies are not only able to outspend each other, they are constantly looking to get an edge or advantage. With something like dedicated servers and managed hosting, this is especially true. An article on targeting ...
In USA Users Spend Double the Time on Social Networks Now
2009-06-05 06:18:00
Facebook leads the pack here not in only in terms of number of users active but also with regards to the number of hours spent on the site. The total number of minutes spent on Facebook surged 700 percent year-on-year to 13.9 bn in April this year from 1.7 bn. However, it is Twitter who took the cake home really, the time spent on the popular microblog rose by as much as 3700 percent compared to last year. This firmly places the reason why many think Twitter will change the way live, for it is actually gaining momentum in terms of usage, but that’s on a different tangent to this post and so we will talk about it later. These numbers were presented in a Nielsen Report that came out some while back. Some other points to note and social networks mentioned include Blogger, Tagged.com and Myspace. Together these sites formed the 5 most active social networking platforms on the web (though not really in that order).  MySpace came second with 4.71 bn minutes which is a sharp 31 perc...

Social Networks: Getting Lost In Features?
2009-05-25 08:07:00
A very interesting fact pointed out by Mr Kalyan Manyam of Indyarocks during the SiliconIndia Digital Media Conference which was moderated by Rajiv Dingra was how tones of apps on a social network actually degrade user experience by making things too complicated. I may not be a social media expert but as a consumer I can relate to this very well. The reason why many still stick to Orkut (at least in my circle) is a) they have grown up with it over the years seeing features being added one by one (including apps) b) switching to Facebook gets confusing for more than one reason and one of them being the flood of applications that one sees there. It becomes hard relating to it in the beginning. I would like to share something that I faced just last week (how apps can make things complicated). One of my Facebook friends has a very nice integration of his Flickr updates on Facebook. Inspired by him I decided to do the same. While trying to integrate my Flickr account with Facebook I sta...

Wanted Dead Or Alive On Social Networks
2009-05-22 16:24:00
Is the FBI giving Social Networks a bad name? After all, the whole construct behind a social network is for followers, fans and alike to interact with each other... and kind of like... behave in a social manner. In what the FBI is calling a "pilot test," the agency is distributing billboards across the virtual worlds of Second Life with the Top Ten Most Wanted list of fugitives. Is this a cheeky way of tempting criminals to crawl out of their covert holes to sign up for Twitter and Facebook accounts?

Social Networks as efficient tools for Dating Online! Are they becoming Dat
2008-08-09 11:04:00
There has been several notices already that Social Networking sites are going toward Dating Industry Direction. Not long ago FoxNews published an article about a strong tendency of MySpace and Facebook to use Online Dating tools to provide services for their users. Single people at Social Networks, do use them as Dating Sites, join groups, chat, go to dates. Dating expert and author Lisa Altalida remains on the fence about using social networking sites as dating tools. "That can be good because you can get a deeper sense of a person on a social networking profile than you can on a dating profile," Altalida said. "Social networking sites are usually used fairly frequently by their users, so you get a truer picture of who the people on the site are, but there is a negative side too"... Read more!

CRM 2.0 - Why Can't Social Networks Port into CRM Systems?
2008-06-06 01:59:00
Customer Relationship Management ("CRM"), one of the least attractive administrative tasks facing any business, needs an overhaul. Most systems have their users manually input and update contact data into data siloes that are currently  incompatible with social networking applications like LinkedIn and Facebook which can harbor that same base data and more. CRM systems have three tracking functions: Contact database - name, address, phone, email, etc. Contact history and details - dates of contact, discussion topics, contact interests and personalization, priority Tasks - next steps, deadlines, timeline, alerts, priority In addition, CRM systems provide management functions: Categorization of contacts, projects and tasks by folders, or better, tags.Data mining and metrics to monitor and elucidate user efficiency - contact growth rate, best use of time, close rate, benchmarking vis-a-vis other users Automated marketing - drip email campaigns, The real estate prof...

Making Money Off Social Networks
2008-05-28 22:04:00
I recently been getting a lot of e-mails from DonkeyMails and No-Minimum promoting this new website called ZenZuu.What is ZenZuu?ZenZuu is a social network website like myspace, friendster, facebook, etc. It lets you upload your photos, create blog post, upload your videos, send messages, leave comments. Basically anything a social network should have in general they have it.What is Different about ZenZuu?It may not be ass fancy as facebook or as popular as myspace, but they're paying members 80% of advertising revenue and keeping 20% for themselves to maintain the website and also paying the owners. Of course the owners of the website will be the biggest earner because they only have a few people splitting the 20% whereas 80% is split amongst 10,000 to 1,000,000 members. The only way for a member to make any money is to have a crap load of referrals. What do I think? This is similar to YUWIE, another social networking website that pays its members. I personally think ZenZuu loo...
