John McCain collecting social security benefits
2008-04-20 03:54:00
Check this out via USA Today: Republican presidential candidate John McCain had income of $405,409 in 2007 and $358,414 in 2006, his campaign just announced — figures that do not reflect the wealth of his wife, Cindy, but rather focus on his earnings as a U.S. senator, author, Social Security recipient and U.S. Navy veteran who receives a pension. Wait, what!? By no means has McCain broken the law here, but considering the fact that he is making over $400,000 a year, is married to a multi-millionaire (not to mention a thief and pill popper) and is also a Republican who advocated for private savings accounts as a means of shoring up the looming Social Security shortfall, doesn’t this make him just a bit of a HYPOCRIT!? Social Security Supplemental Income and whose official term is Supplemental Security Income or SSI is an income supplement program established and supported by the federal government. If you are aged or disabled then SSI might just be able to help you out with cash provisions for your basic needs. The tax laws can be incredibly complicated to understand, especially for the Small Business Owner like yourself. How can you be expected to run your business AND keep up with all the tax rules and regulations? That's why over the years I've discovered many tax-saving strategies that will reduce your tax bill each and every year. These "strategies" are not difficult to understand, nor are they hard to implement.

Social Security Attorney, a resource or a drawback
2008-03-31 18:45:00
Indisputably, the social security administration allows to some extent representation of a lawyer in matters relating to claims of social security benefits as well as in the proceedings (appeal) held within the system. In all instances, a claimant will usually wonder about the value of seeking refuge from a disability attorney in their respective benefits claims.
Social security/Medicare Watch: 2008
2008-03-30 19:52:00
Social Security and Medicare trustees' 2008 annual report was released recently. There are no big surprises in the report, but I find it fascinating to read about the projections for Social security and Medicare for the future. It is true that both programs are in financial trouble, but the situation is not anywhere as bad as some people think. Especially among 20 and 30 somethings, it has become fashionable to dismiss these "government programs".First, about the state of Social security: For years, the Social Security program has been taking in more in payroll taxes from existing workers than it needed to fund benefits. The government borrowed that surplus and promised to pay it back with interest by issuing special issue bonds to the program. The federal government will have to start paying back what it owes the Social Security trust fund in 2017 so the program can continue paying 100% of benefits. The trust fund will run dry by 2041. Without that cushion, Social Security wou...
Don’t Count On Social Security For Your Retirement
2008-03-28 12:59:00
If you’re in your 40’s, 50’s, or 60’s, you’ll probably see the full social security benefits promised to you when you paid into the system throughout your working career. This article from CNN Money via Yahoo Finance, talks about the report that was released this week that Social Security funds will be tapped out by 2041 if it is not reformed. So, that means that if you’re in your 20’s or 30’s, you’ll be funding social security for your parents, but you won’t get jack squat back when it’s your time to retire. The article goes on to talk about what the three presidential candidates would do to help reform the social security system. Here are the quotes from the article. Clinton, for instance, has pledged to stop the practice of the federal government borrowing the surplus paid into Social Security. That’s a noble idea, said Bixby, but difficult to achieve because the government relies on the money. In additi...
Social Security and illegal immigrants
2008-03-26 05:20:00
By VictorM:The 2008 report of the Social Security Trustees released today the "actuarial balance" of the system is better than it's been since 1993.Wow, how about that? Want to know why? It appears that instead of making up numbers to address illegal immigrants based on the make-up of the general population, they actually built a model that better represents that group. And guess what? Illegal immigrants tend to skew young. This benefits the system. Young people have more children than older people. This benefits the system. Some illegal immigrants pay taxes for a few years and then leave. This benefits the system. Bottom line: "This year's report results in ... a substantial increase in the number of working-age individuals contributing payroll taxes, but a relatively smaller increase in the number of retirement-age individuals receiving benefits in the latter half of the long-range period." Give or take a bit, it turns out that this shores up the Social Security system...

Social Security: America's Inflamed Appendix
2008-02-22 14:45:00
In the mid-60s, President Johnson flipped a switch and funding for Social Security went from a private trust account to a "pay as you go" system from the general fund. This decision represents a monumental lack of foreward thinking and general ignorance of population trends. Since that time, it has been apparent that this program would go bankrupt sooner rather than later. I'm sure you've heard the numbers. Some estimates say that by 2017 (now less than a decade away), there will be more retirees receiving social security benefits than there will be wage earners paying in. Not to be doomsday chicken little guy but this problem is more dangerous than any militant Islamo-whatever. As America grays, the problem gets worse.Right now, 6.2% of every wage dollar earned up to 102k, is withheld from your paycheck to go into feeding this behemoth. Additionally, your employer has to match that 6.2%. Anything after 102k annually is SS tax free. The Democrat fix would be to eliminate ...
Another Cause of Delay in Social Security

Extreme Makeover - The Social Security Card Edition
2008-02-12 19:25:00
Perhaps not so extreme, but your basic cardstock social security card may get a high(er) tech makeover.  Two US congressmen are suggesting a card redesign with added security features in an attempt to make card forgery more difficult.  The proposed design includes a photograph, fingerprint, computer chip, barcode, and magnetic strip.  The fancy cards would cost $8 each to produce – a significant increase from the economical 50 cent cards used today, but the congressmen believe they would make it easier for employers to verify the validity of employee’s social security numbers.  Use of fake numbers is a significant problem - employers have reported 1.4 million social security numbers that do not exist according to the Government Accountability Office. Even if these cards get the enhanced security features, it still won’t be a good idea to carry the card with you - keep it in a safe place at home, preferably locked up.
