Hollywood didn't get the post-racial society memo
2012-01-13 17:27:00 The history of the portrayal of African-Americans in movies and television is kind of jacked up. From D.W Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation” to Basketball Wives the powers that be have had an enormous influence on how the masses perceive African-Americans to be. We are a number of things: lazy, incompetent, criminals, or uneducated. That... Read more »
Meanwhile Outside Cairo : Sohag , Alexandria and Sharm
2012-01-06 00:04:00 Meanwhile outside Cairo and the political jazz taking place there as well outside the circus of the parliamentary elections from one side and the Mubarak?s trial from another side. First of the crisis of the butane gas cylinders continues through Egypt in extreme cold weather. The prices of the butane gas cylinder hike up to the sky and average Egyptians are cursing everybody especially those in power more than those in the street. Here is a video showing a protest in Girga of Sohag , Upper Egypt of angry citizens protesting the lack of butane gas cylinders at the city council. Sohag : Protesters want gas cylinders Now what is extremely interesting in this video that the people of Girga are protesting at the city council accusing its officials of creating this crisis , this shows you that people are not afraid to stand for their rights anymore. Sohag : people of Girga do not want the head of their city council Second Alexandria is having its own sea in the cit...

Tidying up the finances when someone goes into a nursing home
2011-11-30 10:09:00 Mum’s journey into a nursing home was largely unplanned for and constantly suffering from delays on the part of social services but she’s been there for several months now. That’s created a much greater involvement with social services and social security than we’ve had up to now and it’s something of a nightmare on the ... WORLDWIDE UNREST
2011-10-04 08:55:00 A recent New York Times article highlights a very fascinating and intriguing movement that's sweeping the globe--unrest. Yes, we've seen it everywhere this year, from the Twitter-induced revolution in Libya, to the riots in London, to the more recent Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City. According to the article, more young people than ever before are outraged with politics and government corruption, and letting it be known! A big factor, the article also explains, has a lot to do with the leaderless Web culture that is so prominent among many of these young rebels. The resources available via the Internet have created almost perfect storm conditions for worldwide upheaval.

2010-12-18 05:06:00 Hey ... I'm still under a massive time crunch with that big freelance project I'm working on, but I wanted to get out a post today as part of "Project for Awesome" which is, if nothing else, a meme traveling through the ChicagoNow community for this Friday's posts.I'd like to point out one of my favorite charities: Best Friends Animal Society ... which is an awesome (but, of course!) animal rescue program. Frankly, I've known the Founders of BFAS since the mid-70's, and it has been a "long strange trip" watching them evolve from what they were to what they are now - the largest sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals.I hope you'll go visit their web site for lots...

Meet Marwa El-Sherbani's Brother
2010-10-28 17:00:00 Meet Marwa El-Sherbani?s brother : Magdy Kamal Kalada , a 19 years half Egyptian-half Iraqi boy who has been killed by two skinheads in the city of Leipzig yesterday. Late Magdy According to Egyptians who spoke to Youm 7 , the 19 years old boy was returning to his home with two of his friends when he was attacked by two Neo-Nazi skinheads who stabbed him 9 times in his stomach.Magdy was transferred to the hospital but it was late. The German police arrested those Neo-Nazis and the funeral of Kalada will be held next Monday. It seems that those two bastards were angered by Magdy?s eastern look. I remember that the Marwa was killed by a Russian skinhead too. That growing mix of xenophobia and Islamophobia is giving Neo-Nazis a life team opportunity to return back to Europe as far as I could tell. Why would a 19 years old kid get killed in this horrible way ? Marwa then Magdy, who will be next !!?? May Allah bless the soul of Magdy and bring patience and sola...
Strike At The AUC New Campus
2010-10-28 01:41:00 As it has become the habit across the country , there is a new strike somewhere and this time time , it is at the AUC new Campus. The angry employees this time are the workers at the AUC new campus and they are angry after the failure of their negotiation with university?s administration for weeks on the promised salaries increase , as a result the workers started their strike today. According to what I understand the matter went from bad to worse when the AUC reduced their salary from LE 650 to LE 450 , the excuse was that the administration dedicated a pension ,a meal and also a transportation means. Honestly what LE 450 or 650 salary can do in Egypt for God sake !!?? Anyhow here are photos from the strike held on Wednesday thanks to the wonderful Gigi Ibrahim who covered for the past 48 hours two strikes and really needs to take a rest. Gigi also recorded in video few moments of the strike. Speaking with the HR representative !!??Brian McDougal, the Vice President of Plannin...
This is Called Plagiarism Dear al Ahram
2010-10-26 17:30:00 I believe that Al Ahram newspaper whether offline or online must have a clear policy when it comes to plagiarism , especially online plagiarism. It is sad and pathetic when the biggest newspaper in Egypt and the Arab world uses photos without the permission of its owners not to mention photos owned by other newspapers. This is not an expression art we are going to debate about , this is about crystal clear plagiarism in the online edition of the newspaper. Yesterday we found out Al Shabab portal following Al Ahram used a photo taken by Egyptian socialist activist Mashad and used it without permission in a report about the university guards debate. You can see below a screen cap from Al Shabab. Shabab using a photo without the permission of its owner Now the website of the leading official press in Egypt is stealing photos from Al Masry Al Youm , a leading private newspaper . I am sorry to use this word (steal) but what else can be used properly to describe this b...
And The Madness Goes On : Fire Shooting in Ramses Street
2010-10-26 01:14:00 There was another mass shooting incident today in down town Cairo in Ramses Street. 8 civilians were injured , one is currently in a critical condition. We got two stories about what happened it all started at automobile spare parts shop when the owner of that shop had a fight with a customer that wanted to return back some spare part he had bought , the fight ended that the shop owner pulled his gun and opened his fire injuring 8 persons ,one of them is currently in a critical condition. Another story says that this fight was about a parking space !! A guy wanted to park in front of the shop and the owner was against it , they started a fight ended with thugs and gun shots. I don not know what the investigation will reveal but I am not convinced by both stories. You can watch a video report from Al Masry Al Youm about the incident after the break ?Graphic discretion? Anyhow this another incident showing the lack of order and fear of the l...
The Ghetto Mentality Both Ways
2010-10-24 17:13:00 Reuters published this very interesting report about the rise of the religious conservatism in Egypt by Yasmine Salah. I agree 100% with the first part that "Moderates are unable to enjoy their lives... We're under pressure to join one of the two extremes." I do not agree fully with the rest of the report , first of all I do not know why the media is overlooking the other exclusive club or uptown ghetto in town with all its radicalism , yes radicalism in showing off, radicalism in imitation and radicalism in disrespecting all our traditions and values. Already what is mentioned or regarded as extremism in this report is not considered extremism , it is not about head scarf or beaches or restaurants or showing your facing , it is about dangerous fatwas and notorious parties. Second of all this extremism with all its kinds is not only the result of economic factors or the return of Egyptian expats from the Gulf with alien new values and traditions as much it is mo...
The Cardinal Manning Society
2010-10-23 12:52:00 The Tomb of Cardinal Manning in Westminster Cathedral, London Much attention has been devoted naturally to the Life and Works of Blessed John Henry Newman created a Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII and now beatified by Pope Benedict XVI The attention has overshadowed the life and works of the other great Catholic Cardinal in Victorian England: Henry Edward Cardinal Manning (1808-1892) Manning was unfortunate in the choice of his first authorised biographer: Edmund Sheridan Purcell who wrote a rather biased and negative life of the Cardinal after his death. This was followed by an extremely unattractive mischaracterisation by Lytton Strachey in his "Eminent Victorians" During his lifetime he was regarded as one of the most important Catholic theologian in the English speaking world. He was highly regarded by Blessed Pius IX as well as Pope Leo XIII. Leo XIII`s famous social encyclical Rerum Novarum owes much to the Cardinal. To remedy the lack of knowledge about Manning, a Societ...

Small Commitment for a Big Society
2010-06-21 20:46:00 Rape Crisis (England and Wales) has organised a campaign for sustainable funding for Rape Crisis centres, as there are areas without services at all, and other areas where the existing services are under threat of closure. They are therefore asking for reassurance from the Coalition Government that it will keep its sustainable funding commitment to Rape Crisis. As someone who has used my local Rape Crisis centre, I can only praise how well they support women and girls, and that service no longer existing would be devastating for my city. Statistics for sexual violence are not going down, and we certainly need more specialist, independent women-only services for survivors, not risk there being even fewer. On their facebook page for this campaign, they have suggestions of things that we can do: • Join our supporters’ group on Facebook• Publicise the group and this event page to all your Facebook friends and encourage others to join and do the same• Send a letter to Theresa Ma...
