Pro sports lacking in gay tolerance
2009-10-31 00:54:00
A colleague passed along this story about anti-gay sentiment in the NFL. It's a follow-up to the story of Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson getting suspended after using anti-gay slurs -- the "f" word -- on his Twitter account and to a locker room full of reporters. Johnson apologized, was suspended for two weeks, and now is appealing his suspension (the suspension was for "conduct detrimental to the team," and didn't specify whether it was for the anti-gay comments or other Twitter comments bashing his coach). But as the Kansas City Star story notes, anti-gay rhetoric is not unusual in professional sports. "It seems like every single season I'm getting phone calls about some athlete saying a gay slur, and using the word...

Top Ten Sports-Related Halloween Costumes That Don't Suck
2009-10-26 21:27:00
You're better than this. Halloween is just five days away. You don't wanna be just another Balloon Boy, do you? Imagine the embarrassment if you and your sweetie run into another duo dressed as Kanye West and Taylor Swift! And we all heard that Conan O'Brien monologue: you won't be the only Count Barackula at the club. Why not combine your love of sports with your love of Halloween? There are countless characters in the sports world just waiting to be spoofed. But let the amateurs flood the costume shops for this year's hottest picks. Leave the Danica Patrick racing suits and the Kenny Powers' mullets to the trixies and d'bags. You, sports fan, can do better all by yourself....
Chicago Sports Needs Some Personalities
2009-10-26 05:20:00
While I consider Rick Morrissey a colleague and a friend, we usually disagree on most of the topics we discuss in the sports world. However, his column this morning in the Chicago Tribune was outstanding. For a world class city with the best sports fans in the world, we sure don't have much in the way of colorful personalities who are compelling enough for even the casual fan to pay attention. How big would Chad Ochocinco be on the national stage if he played in Chicago or New York? He would be a mega star.Outside of Ozzie Guillen, name me one guy who you think really keeps it interesting, and is engaging not only with the media, but in the...

Programming Note....Jim Hendry on Sports Central
2009-10-22 23:39:00
Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry will join me tonight on Sports Central at 7:35 for an extended discussion. Hendry has always been very generous with his time and he has agreed to discuss this past season and the upcoming off season. Please post any questions that you have as a comment  here on the blog. One request, please keep the questions to current issues with the team. Hendry is not allowed by baseball rules to discuss players on other teams. Also, please keep it clean. I know that Cubs fans are frustrated by the 2009 season but please ask solid questions. Inappropriate comments will be removed.  Also, please note that new Cubs hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo will join me at 7:10....
Great Moments In Sports We Have Yet To See
2009-10-20 20:11:00
So the photo this morning of ARod groping Jeter got me thinking. Do you remember this episode of Seinfeld? Where George fell in love with a She-Jerry?     So when photos of ARod's strippers came out, was I the only one surprised that NOT ONE of them looked like this? Yoohooo, Alexander!...

Why are our sports figures moving out?
2009-10-18 18:08:00
Is it the weather? The fact that we didn't get the Olympics? Chicago's famous athletes Jim McMahon and Antonio Davis are picking up and leaving some sweet real estate to head down south, according to this Tribune article. They're giving up, and often taking losses on mansions in the suburbs to move to Florida and Georgia. Maybe cost of living down there is cheaper, or maybe there's less chance to losing property value (which I doubt). But I wonder who is moving into these mansions and if they feel like they're getting a good deal. Interestingly, they both used the same listing broker, Brush Hill Realty in Hinsdale, to sell the places. Brush Hill, incidentally, is listing properties worth 10 times...

State of Chicago Sports: Oct. 16
2009-10-16 21:49:00
Lets put the spotlight on the Blackhawks to begin this State of the Union address. First off, the NHL will always be a cult sport. Be honest, can you or any of your in-laws named a past for present goaltender for the Atlanta Thrashers?   But the Blackhawks are rapidly moving up the local popularity ladder. Round one, the Hawks Monday night game with Calgary was seen in over 93,000 homes....

So to help you keep track of what's going on, here are the Top Ten Events in Chicago Sports This Weekend.10. Swimming 101 ? How to Do a Flip Turn!

When I was about 13, my mom used to take me to YMCA in South San Francisco where I learned how to do various swimming basics such as the flip turn.  Btw, YMCA has the god-awful smell of urine, I try to avoid them nowdays. Anyways, enough about my life, here’s how you can learn online ...
Random Thoughts From the Chicago Sports Scene
2009-10-11 22:28:00
Once in a awhile I like to look at some of the happenings in the sports world rather than just concentrating a blog post on just one sport. So here are some thoughts and questions that I have been observing and wondering about for a while.Did you know that the over/under total of wins for the Bears in Las Vegas when the season began was 8 1/2? You have to think that the large numbers of Chicagoans who travel to Vegas must have put some serious money down on the over. The Bears look pretty solid and with Jay Cutler at the controls it would take a real collapse to not win at least 9 games. The total bet in Vegas...

One More Sports Illustrated Story on the USOC's Ham-Fisted Enforcement Effo
2009-09-23 06:15:00
Last Olympic post for a while, I promise. And I’m almost certain it’s the last time this year I’ll quote from Sports Illustrated. But here’s another gem from SI about the USOC’s ham-fisted efforts to enforce its rights to all things Olympic. From its Dec. 5, 1994 issue: “In its quest to bring home the gold, the U.S. Olympic Committee apparently believes it must send out several thousand letters every year implying that it will take legal action against businesses using, in their name or logo, the word Olympic or the interlocking rings, to which a 1978 federal law grants the USOC exclusive rights. This is a petty and merciless job, but the Lords of the Rings evidently feel somebody has to do it.” Seattle doctor Dan Nelson, who at least in 1994 owned a practice called “Olympic Spinal Care,” summed up local sentiment toward the USOC’s enforcement efforts rather nicely: “‘The general provinc...
Olympic Businesses Everywhere: Sports Illustrated Nails the USOC's "Comic O
2009-09-22 07:21:00
A reporter put me onto an excellent Sports Illustrated article written during the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul. Author Leigh Montville writes about being “On the Trail of the O-Word,” in which he concludes that ”[d]espite official efforts to curb unsanctioned use of the word ‘Olympic,’” it is “here, there and everywhere.” To illustrate his point, he riffs on “Olympic” names he comes across in everyday life: Olympic Burger and Burrito. Olympic Fish and Meat Market. Olympic Fruit and Vegetable. Olympic Bar B Que. Olympic Pawn Shop. Olympic Van Lines. His list goes on and on. “Is there any fair-sized town that does not have an Olympic Diner somewhere on its outskirts?” he asks. “One Olympic Diner leads into two Olympic Realty offices, which lead into three Olympic Laundromats. There seem to be no boundaries. These Olympics are everywhere. Around the country. Around the world. The Olympic Di...

British Sports Cars and American Hot Rods Travel to VT This Weekend
2009-09-16 17:08:00
I just posted a few photos from the 2007 British Invasion on Flickr to give you a small sampling of what this car show is about. As mentioned in my September 6 blog entry below, there will be hundreds of beautiful British cars from old to new. The British Invasion web site has more details. My friends from the Classic Bike Experience will be there as well to display some British Motorcycles. The Boston Sunday Globe named this event as their number one choice for "Best 10 things to do within a day's drive of Boston." And the Vermont Chamber of Commerce has named it several years in a row as a Top Ten Event in Vermont. The event will be held at the Stowe Events Field on Weeks Hill Road, just off Route 108. It runs this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the same weekend, there's a very large street rod show at the Champlain Expo Center put on by the National Street Rod Association. Another sports jerk?
2009-09-16 16:07:00
C'mon, people, I don't even like sports, but all you rude-asses are making me have to follow you. Apparently, last night New York Yankee Jorge Posada thought it was okay to elbow Toronto catcher Jesse Carlson. He thought nothing of it, but he did hope it wouldn't get him suspended, and that his kids didn't see it. Posada didn't even apologize. I'm thinking much like how new employees are forced to sit in a one- to five-day employee orientation, sports players, at every level, need to sit in a room for a day or two and learn what sportsmanlike conduct is....

It's Official - ESPN STAR Sports Will Not Be Telecasting La Liga
2009-09-14 08:08:00
Ok, This is one of the most dissappointing moment for a La Liga fan. I did contact Cheryl Long, Manager, Corporate Communications, ESPN STAR Sports regarding the telecast of La Liga this season in India. He has replied confirming the news that they will not be telecasting La Liga this season in India. He also has confirmed that they don't have the rights to show highlights package. Now with ESPN-STAR Sports out of the picture we only have Ten Sports to depend on. I tried to contact them but there is still no reply from their part. I will write to them again and see what they will reply. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Otherwise streaming in Internet is the only option. I do agree that it is a not so great option, but it is better than nothing. Even though I am heavily dissappointed I would like to thank Cheryl Long for replying to my mail as early as he could.

Live Sports Streaming Online – Is This Viable For The Indian Market?
2009-08-27 09:26:00
You could soon be watching cricket matches live streamed online; and that could be as early as during the upcoming tri-series involving India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in September. Well, this is not a novelty if you are one of the diaspora watching live cricket all the while on Cricinfo for a fee. But a Hulu-kind video website is soon to be launched by NBC Universal in partnership with Ten Sports for the Indian and West Asian audience. This shall be the first of its kind sports video website in India and while it is meant to be focused on all sports (I pray that includes F1), knowing the demographics well, it could be a majorly cricket based video site. The website is currently in closed trials and shall be launched very soon to the public. There are two issues of concern here. Firstly, it is the broadband internet speeds which is languishing in most places in India. Are Indians ready for such bandwidth-hungry websites that could prove to be a big disappointment for users who ha...
