Atchison Gets Invite To Red Sox Spring Training
2012-02-07 18:46:00 When the Boston Red Sox signed Cody Ross, they needed to make room on the 40-man roster for him. They ended up doing that by designating Scott Atchison for assignment. On Monday, Atchison cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox. Since he is no longer on the 40-man roster and under a minor league deal, the Red Sox have invited him to spring training as a non-roster invitee. He'll report with the rest of the pitchers and catchers in 10 days on February 17th. Atchison spent the 2011 season shuttling between Pawtucket and Boston making 17 appearances with the Red Sox. In those 17 games, he was 1-0 with a 3.26 ERA. He will be given a chance to compete for a spot in the revamped Red Sox bullpen. Follow Ian on Twitter @soxanddawgs. Spring Training Report: Silva Released, and Hendry and Quade Fire Back
2011-03-28 02:45:00 Carlos Silva had some interesting comments after being told by the Cubs that he would not have a spot in their rotation on Saturday, and Sunday saw even more fireworks coming from the team's camp in Mesa. Early in the day it was announced that Silva had been released by the club, after the Cubs failed to generate any interest in trading the disgruntled pitcher. Reports suggested that the team was willing to eat a huge chunk of his salary in any deal, but even with the incredibly low asking price and willingness to pay most of the money, Chicago couldn't get a deal done and were forced to grant him his release. The chances for a deal were so slim that...
Spring Training Report: Cubs Give Carlos Silva The Heave-Ho, and Rightly So
2011-03-27 00:39:00 Over the course of spring training, one of the biggest battles for roster spots came as several players sought out spots in the starting rotation. Randy Wells, Carlos Silva, Andrew Cashner, and Braden Looper were the frontrunners for the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation, and with Wells securing the fourth spot yesterday, only the fifth remained. Today, the Cubs announced that they would be giving the starting pitching job to Cashner, and they said that they would attempt to trade Silva and his $12 million contract, or try to send him via waivers to the minor leagues. After this announcement, Carlos countered by saying that he would not accept his demotion, and went on to make some very telling comments...
White Sox Notes: I'm Over This Whole Spring Training Thing.
2011-03-23 02:19:00 I'll get this out of the way immediately. Peavy update of the day: He claims Ozzie has complete control, and he never begged to pitch. I'm not going to delve into all of the rhetoric that Peavy had spewed all spring about how badly he wants to be in there, how he would question a teammate who didn't want to be out there, and how he is honest and has learned from his past mistakes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He also played catch today and was "encouraged." Why can't this man sit still? I'm taking a new approach to Mr. Peavy: I'll be encouraged when he makes 25+ starts. Until then, zero encouragement sir....

Tales from Camelback Ranch: White Sox Spring Training Photos
2011-03-17 05:25:00 Remember when I said I'd have some kind of update before Wednesday this week? I lied. I'm sorry. I have set out to make this up to you with pictures from Spring Training. And not the good ones you see in the newspaper. Ridiculous ones that I took myself. Enjoy them. Today was interesting. My family arrived 2 hours early to Camelback Ranch to attempt to switch our tickets with tickets in the shade. My genius parents decided when they ordered tickets that the 10th row would be far up enough to get under the overhang thingy. Guess what? It's not. As I learned on the news yesterday, Wednesday March 16th was the first 90 degree day of the year! Goody!...
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview - Kerry Wood
2011-03-16 21:02:00 1998 wasn't that long ago, but I suppose if you are 20 now, you were seven then, so let me put it to you this way: How do you feel about Starlin Castro, right at this moment? After the jump: I make my point! ...
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Carlos Zambrano
2011-03-16 03:22:00 I assure you it is only by accident that I have written three articles about a Cubs player named Carlos. Pity Carlos Pena, who is like an Oreo frosting of sanity smooshed between two chocolate cookies of loco el crazio that is Carlos "too fat to fail" Pena and Carlos "ME GRITAN COSAS LOCAS EN ESPAĆOL" Zambrano. Speaking of the Crazed Rambler......
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Marlon Byrd
2011-03-13 21:19:00 Marlon Byrd was a nice surprise last season. He had all the makings of a Jim Hendry bad signing. A guy coming off a career year, plus the face that he was playing Texas. While, Milton Bradley didn't work out, Mr. Byrd was quite good last season. He's the perfect player to have on a winning team, it's just too bad that Byrd is on a average team that will have a tough time contending with the pieces the team currently has in place. After the jump, we'll take a closer look at Marlon brings to the table....
Spring Training Report: Wells Solidifies Rotation Resume & Santo Honore
2011-03-10 22:52:00 Going into spring training, the Cubs had the top three spots in their rotation set in stone, but the fourth and fifth spots were up in the air. Signs seem to be pointing to one of those being Andrew Cashner's to lose, but the final spot is still a toss up between Randy Wells and Carlos Silva. With Silva's early struggles with his rage and control in his first couple of outings, the door was wide open for Wells to seize the spot. If his first three outings this spring have been any indication, Wells is well on his way to punching his ticket to the starting rotation. In Thursday's tilt with the Cleveland Indians, Wells had a great outing, only...
Marlon Byrd On Fire Early In Spring Training For Cubs
2011-03-10 20:01:00 It might be early in spring training, but Marlon Byrd is giving Cubs fans a reason to be excited as the regular season approaches.A former member of the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers, Byrd was signed as a free agent prior to the 2010 season, making him the big prize of that winter. In 2010, Byrd provided most of the consistency in the Cubs lineup, hitting in just about every spot in the order. While he did struggle a bit in the second half, he did finish with a .293 average and some Gold Glove candidacy. As much of the attention has fallen around the Cubs' woes in the field and their struggles on the mound this spring, Byrd has been hitting...
White Sox Spring Training defers its first set of dreams
2011-03-10 08:56:00 We would all like to think that we love baseball for the intrinsic qualities of the game. Its wonderful mix of trends, probability, and random chance, the athleticism, the strategy, its raw visual splendor. But if that were really true, Spring Training baseball would be enough. It's the sport being played by the best baseballers (not a word) in all the world, after all. But something is missing, isn't it? It's the thrill of competition. The wonder that is victory, and the sadistic pleasure that is defeat. If you were really empathizing with the last part of that sentence, then today was great day, because the White Sox made their first round of cuts from the major league camp.
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Carlos Pena
2011-03-10 04:17:00 My gut reaction when I read that the Cubs had signed Carlos Pena this off season was a Nancy Kerriganesque wail of "whyyyyy?" After all - the guy slugs some homeruns, but he batted Augie Ojeda's weight last year. More to the point, over the past two seasons, Pena has batted .212. Quick - name the last team that won a World Series whose power hitting first baseman batted .212! It's cool, we'll wait for you to look it up. Go on, find that information. Or......
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Kosuke Fukudome
2011-03-06 17:00:00 There are two things we know for certain about Kosuke Fukudome: (1) Barring injury, he will be on the Opening Day roster; (2) This will be his last season as a member of the Chicago Cubs.
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Carlos Silva
2011-03-06 01:28:00 A look behind the curtains - we love doing these Season Previews. In fact, we often assign them to our crack staff of writers at the very beginning of Spring Training, before we really have any clear indication as to what will happen. In other words, I've had Carlos Silva on my tab ever since the beginning of February.Looks like I hit the jackpot....
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Andrew Cashner
2011-03-04 01:30:00 I didn't have much time to sit down and semi-thoughtfully analyze Andrew Cashner's upcoming 2011 season, so forgive me for giving this post the Thomas Hobbes treatment.
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview - Casey Coleman
2011-03-03 01:50:00 There was probably only a few people in Maryville today who were happy to see Silva the Hutt go after ARam. Casey Coleman was probably one of them.He was the beneficiary of some decent support in his late-season trial in 2010. He had two very nice starts that I can remember, out of 8, which isn't so great. He doesn't strike out a whole lot of guys, and compounds that by giving up a lot of walks. Most of his walks were in the few miserable starts he had, though. It is very hard when you're choking on "small sample size".Honestly, I don't see anything really special about this guy, at all. Much was said about his dad and...
White Sox televised (sorta) Spring Training Game #2 - Is everyone still hea
2011-03-02 09:23:00 Another glorious, injury-free (as far as I know) White Sox Spring Training game came and went on Tuesday. The team was good enough to broadcast it on whitesox.com, and as a result a couple of very important projects across offices on the South Side went uncompleted, firms presumably went under as a result, and the White Sox knocked the city deeper into the recession....just as they always planned.
White Sox televised Spring Training Game #1 - What did we learn?
2011-03-01 05:28:00 The lesson to begin with--and it will be in however many of these I write--is that nothing can be definitively learned or proven in a single Spring Training game. They can only be very forcefully suggested. Actually scratch that, we can be sure of one thing; this was a very early Spring Training game. The Sox and Dodgers combined for 6 errors, 3 wild pitches, and a general haze of hideousness that extended out to the piddling 3,963 attendance. Perhaps pricing the games like they don't actually matter might help that a bit.
Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Tyler Colvin
2011-03-01 01:56:00 Tyler Colvin should make the 2011 Chicago Cubs' major league team headed out of spring.
Cubs Spring Training: Game 1 Impressions
2011-02-28 09:02:00 The Cubs opened their spring training season at Hohokam Park on Sunday, hosting the Oakland A's to open up the exhibition series. I was in attendance for the game that saw 22 runs score between the two teams, and left many Cubs fans walking away with excitement for the 2011 season, but others with concerns.Carlos Zambrano was given the first start of the spring, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out the first two batters he faced. Big Z looked as strong as he finished last season, a good sign for Cubs fans.As good as Zambrano was, Matt Garza was a bit shaky in his first "official" appearance in a Cubs uniform. Garza also hurled a pair of innings, walking...

But I thought I'd throw up a forum for folks to contribute comments during the first Chicago Cubs Spring Training game of the 2011 season.Go Cubs!...
Cubs Spring Training Mega-Preview: Darwin Barney
2011-02-22 19:00:00 I recently had a terrible, horrible nightmare. Starlin Castro was gone. I'm not sure where he went, but he wasn't playing shortstop for the Cubs.
Cubs Spring Training Mega-Preview: James Russell
2011-02-19 19:48:00 Just because you pitch left-handed does not mean you should be a starter is what the Cubs should be thinking. If your five pitchers are all right-handed, then so be it. The last few years, the Cubs were able to have Ted Lilly anchor the left side and do it quite well. Mike Quade said that James "Not Jeff" Russell will compete for a rotation spot this spring. Granted, Russell is the only LHP option to start after the Cubs dealt Tom Gorzalanny to the Nationals last month. The problem is that Russell hasn't been an effective starter at any level for the Cubs. ...

Red Sox Spring Training 2011 - All About Anticipation
2011-02-10 07:35:00 Spring Training will be anything but boring for the Sox this year. Last year there was a lot of talk about how Spring Training was "boring" for the Red Sox. Save for John Lackey, there were no big name free...

Cubs Announce 21 Non-Roster MLB Spring Training Invites
2011-01-28 03:59:00 The Chicago Cubs have invited 21 non-roster players to major league spring training, which begins Sunday, February 13 when pitchers and catchers are invited to report in Mesa , Ariz. Their first workout will take place on Monday, February 14. Position players report to camp Friday, February 18 with the team's first full workout Saturday, February 19. Today, the Cubs announced they have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Braden Looper and infielder Augie Ojeda on minor league contracts with invites to major league spring training....
Cubs called on to move spring training out of Arizona
2010-05-14 23:38:00 First seeing the headline, I thought that someone important, or someone with some clout, or thousands of fans were demanding this. But upon reading the story, we discover that it's "dozens" of Chicago Cubs fans gathered outside Wrigley Field. What's next to be covered, two fans in a phone booth?...
Goodbye Spring Training!
2010-04-04 16:50:00 Tribune photo by Scott StrazzanteWe've finally reached the end of Spring Training! That's right, kids - real baseball is on its way. In the final game of the spring, Randy Wells did his best to reassure us that there won't be a sophomore slump.Randy Wells looks ready, to say the least, for his second major league season. The right-hander threw four scoreless innings to improve to 4-0 in the spring, leading the Cubs to a 6-0 victory over the Diamondbacks in the teams' final tune-up before the regular season. Tomorrow's Opening Day game will afford us the opportunity to see the slimmed-down version of Big Z take the mound. Larry Rothschild seems to like what he's seen this spring:"The arm...
Spring Training Means Nothing. Bring On Baseball!!
2010-04-02 19:03:00 I'm about to say something that many baseball fans may agree with and some may think is just a fan siding with the obvious. Thank god spring training is over. Seriously!! Between all the drama of White Sox camp and the dullness of Cubs camp, if I had two more weeks (let alone two more days) of what I term "fake baseball" I'd probably start watching the NBA more I'd be so bored. So far this spring we've had all kinds of stories coming out of Arizona ranging from:1. Ozzie vs. Kenny2. Lou's motivation for this season in his final year of his contract3. Carlos Zambrano telling fans not once but twice he'll be a changed man in 2010.4. Bobby...
Breaking down the greatest Spring Training article ever
2010-03-27 15:40:00 The maker of history.I wrote earlier this year about the cliche spring training stories you were bound to see. Well, this is what happens when they run out of ideas. Brilliance.I'm going to break down the greatest spring training story ever.Let's start with the title. "1st-ever game-ending for Griffey Jr." When I first saw this, I thought it had to be an old article that was accidentally linked. First of all, who keeps track of Spring Training walk-off grand slams? Second of all, this is not a news story. It would be like seeing a headline, "Ryan Frasier hits five homers with Eric Chavez in MLB The Show." Thirdly, I found link on the Chicago Tribune's sports page. And it was...
Observations From Spring Training
2010-02-26 02:44:00 With both the Cubs and White Sox hard at work in Spring Training, there are a few interesting story lines starting to develop for both teams. First, the Cubs had serious bullpen questions entering camp, and now with their top right handed setup man Angel Guzman experiencing discomfort in his pitching shoulder and being shut down, the questions are only bigger and potentially more serious. If Guzman cannot be an effective bridge to closer Carlos Marmol, then the job falls to both John Grabow and rookie Esmailin Caridad. Grabow is an experienced arm who has shown the ability to get right handed hitters out, but is he a lock down guy who can be your #1 option in the 7th and...
Tuesday Cubs Headlines: Z, Spring Training and Ari Fleischer?
2010-02-16 15:04:00 In case you missed it in the comments yesterday, a guy watching Spring Training in Mesa tweeted that Z hit a 400-foot HR to straightaway CF yesterday. Wooo! Just give him the 5th OF spot already! Alas, while we're all waiting with baited breath (ew) for something exciting to happen in camp, the powers that be are hoping for the opposite: Camp Ho Hum is not exactly the Cubs' style, though Hendry is dreaming it will happen, and having St. Louis as the Central Division's favorite helps."It's a good thing," Hendry said. "We never got too caught up when we were predicted to win every game, and certainly if we're predicted to not win the division, it won't be a...
No Announcement on Spring Training Site Today
2010-01-15 23:03:00 Numerous news organizations are reporting today that the Chicago Cubs will announce their future spring training home this afternoon. I have confirmed that they will be making no announcement today as they weigh proposals from both Mesa, AZ and Naples, FL.Speculation is running rampant that the Cubs have settled on Naples or are close to making that decision but I do not believe that any announcement has been decided upon. Yesterday, the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan had a story that talked about a "bed tax" that would potentially seal the deal for a move to Naples. I predicted months ago that despite an excellent offer from Naples that the Cubs would get a deal done that would keep them in...

2009 Jays Spring Training = Waste of Time
2009-03-25 16:35:00 2009 Jays Spring Training = Waste of Time Was spring training a big waste of time for Jays fans? Offensively The line-up was essentially set from day one. Spring Training Question
2009-03-20 14:53:00 We?re in the middle of the NCAA Tournament?s first round with Pitt and Robert Morris both playing today and the Penguins are continuing their hot streak trying to make the NHL playoffs. So today seems to be a perfect time to write about the Pittsburgh Pirates! I?m heading to Bradenton, Florida on Sunday for my first ever Spring Training, and I figured I would ask a few people what I should look for while I?m there.
