The Starting Pitcher Market
2008-06-04 12:47:00 Almost every team needs starting pitching. Let's take a look at who's out there. Bronson Arroyo, Reds. If Walt Jocketty starts selling off his veterans, he'll have to listen on Arroyo. The innings-eating 31 year-old is signed through 2010. Derek Lowe, Dodgers. Lowe seems to have righted the ship after a five-start stumble. He'll be a free agent after the season, but I can't see Ned Colletti moving Lowe unless the Dodgers fall out of contention. Joe Blanton, A's. Like Arroyo, a hittable innings eater. Also like Arroyo, he's under team control through 2010. Livan Hernandez, Twins. The Twins may want to keep Livan, since they are in the thick of the AL Central race. You may recall they did not elect to trade Carlos Silva last year. A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays. His name comes up in trade rumors because of an opt out clause. If he thinks he can top a two-year, $24MM deal, Burnett will probably elect free agency a...

Starting Pitcher Fake I.D. Club
2008-04-07 00:23:00 As the Opening Week in Fantasy Baseball 2008 draws to a close, we are left with a week that gave us everything; well, except a Tiger win (Sunday Night Baseball will finish that story) of course. Some players are red hot (Nate McLouth), others are struggling mightily (Johnny Damon), while others are performing right on par with expectations. The story of the week would have to be Cincinnatti Reds hurler Johnny Cueto, who fanned 10 in his Major League debut. But Cueto wasn't the only young arm to come out firing. Here's a list of other babies who took the mound successfully; some of which, including Cueto, are barely old enough to enjoy a cold one after striking out Ryan Howard. read more

Final Starting Pitcher Rankings
2007-10-16 12:55:00 (Click here for the full list of the Top 100 starting pitchers of 2007)Pitching is the most difficult position to predict for a variety of reasons. Injuries are more common among pitchers than any other position, making it all but impossible to know who'll get 35 starts and maintain their standing in the rotation all year long. Young AA or AAA pitchers are brought up more frequently than others too, mainly because good starting pitching is so hard to find that General Managers are often less conservative, taking more risk by giving a youngster a chance. There are other reasons as well, all of which is to say no matter the ranking system be cautious with starting pitching - you will undoubtedly need to react during the year to make a play for someone not on your roster. The Baseball Lab rankings had 17 of the top 100 pitchers not even ranked in the pre-season.Biggest Surprise - Without question, Fausto Carmona was the nicest surprise a fantasy owner could hope to get. Carmona pitche...

Braves: Starting pitchers looking strong
2007-03-20 05:21:00 Chuck James and the rest of the Atlanta Braves' starting pitchers are heading into the final stage of spring training looking strong. James overcame control problems to throw five scoreless innings on Monday, lowering his ERA to 2.57 in the Braves' 6-0 win over the Cleveland Indians. James gave up four hits but walked three. He loaded the bases in the second with two walks after Casey Blake's double, then pitched out of the jam. "I definitely was reminded why we have a pitching coach again," said James, who met with Roger McDowell after every inning "so I didn't feel goofy throwing." Atlanta's starters have stellar ERAs. Buddy Carlyle, who has not allowed a run in 10 innings, is followed by Lance Cormier (1.29), Tim Hudson (1.80) and John Smoltz (1.93). Braves starters have a 2.25 ERA, allowing 18 earned runs in 72 innings. "I think a lot of the guys are ready to go," manager Bobby Cox said. Chuck JamesJohn SmoltzTim Hudson
Using Average Draft Position To Rank Second Tier Starting Pitchers
2007-03-16 14:41:00 A couple of days back I looked at the second tier starting pitchers using xFIP. Today, I want to take another stab at evaluating the second tier starters by using Average Draft Position. I’m using statistical data from Mock Draft Central during the time period of March 7, 2007 to March 14, 2007. They have analyzed 333 mock drafts during that time, all were 5X5 mixed league drafts. If you want to see more ADP data or would like to practice a live draft or two, go check out Mock Draft Central. Here’s the 2nd tier, SP data. ADP is listed 1st, then the highest the player was drafted is listed 2nd, and lowest drafted position is 3rd. Chris Carpenter - 29.61 (16 Highest) (40 Lowest) Carlos Zambrano - 42.58 (27 Highest) (54 Lowest) Roy Oswalt - 40.05 (26 Highest) (51 Lowest) Brandon Webb - 50.42 (38 Highest) (60 Lowest) Roy Halladay - 41.61 (25 Highest) (53 Lowest) Yet another ranking system that doesn’t agree with my SP rankings here at Crooked Pitch. And to boot, ADP ...

Micah Owings: Diamondbacks Starting Pitcher Sleeper
2007-03-14 12:38:00 Micah Owings, the 24 year old top Arizona Diamondbacks pitching prospect, is looking good this spring. He needs to, as a good spring might be the only thing that will keep him in the DBacks rotation. Last season his minor league numbers looked like this: AA 12GS 6-2 2.91ERA 74.1IP 69K 17BB AAA 15GS 10-0 3.70ERA 87.2IP 61K 34BB Owings is competing with 4 others for the #5 spot in the rotation. Owings has the best spring ERA of the bunch and, if the decision is based on spring numbers, seems to be the front runner. Here’s his spring line so far: 2007 3G 2GS 0-0 1.29ERA 7.0IP 8K 3BB His K/BB in AAA Tucson is a bit scary at 1.79, but if you look at his whole year, last season it’s 2.54. As of right now, Owings is a great keeper league option and you can take him in the late rounds of your NL only drafts. Technorati Tags: Micah Owings, Arizona Diamondbacks

2007 Position Battle: NL Starting Pitcher
2007-03-12 18:59:00 Chicago Cubs: 5th spotCandidates:Mark PriorWade Miller Sean MarshallAngel GuzmanEdge: Mark Prior--The Cubs have finally realized that the safest approach to their pitching rotation is not counting on neither Kerry Wood nor Prior to contribute anything of significance. That said, the battle for the Cubs fifth rotation spot comes down to Prior versus himself. If Prior can finally stay healthy, the job will be handed to him without much resistance. If he's unfit for the job, the Cubs will let Wade Miller, Sean Marshall, and Angel Guzman battle for the spot. Los Angeles Dodgers: 5th spotCandidates:Chad BillingsleyBrett TomkoMark HendricksonHong-Chih KuoEdge: Chad Billingsley--The Dodgers have developed a wealth of talented young pitching prospects over the last couple years and Billingsley is one of the best, but that doesn't mean there isn't a scramble for the fifth starter job. Billingsley will have to fend off Brett Tomko, Mark Hendrickson, and Hong-Chih Kuo. The reality of it is ...
2007 Position Battle: AL Starting Pitcher
2007-03-10 16:50:02 Minnesota Twins: 5th spotCandidates:Sidney PonsonMatt GarzaScott BakerGlen PerkinsEdge: Sidney Ponson--Manager Ron Gardenhire recently told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that veterans Carlos Silva, Ramon Ortiz, and Ponson have the edge on the next three spots behind Johan Santana. We'll concede Silva and Ortiz, add Boof Bonser as a definite, and call it an open race between Ponson, Matt Garza, Scott Baker, and Glen Perkins for the fifth job. Ponson does nothing for us from a fantasy standpoint, and our hope is that Garza or Perkins steps up to the challenge.Chicago White Sox: 5th spotCandidates:Gavin FloydCharlie HaegerEdge: Gavin Floyd--Floyd enters preseason play with a very slight edge on his competition, but there's a long list of youngsters on his heels. Charlie Haeger, Nick Masset, John Danks, Gio Gonzalez, Lance Broadway, and Heath Phillips have all been mentioned in the mix. Masset appears to be headed for the bullpen, and Danks, Gonzalez, and Broadway don't have the luxur...
What about... Other Starting Pitchers
2007-03-08 16:37:02 I was recently asked where some of these pitchers would rank:1) Dontrelle Willis2) Justin Verlander3) Bronson Arroyo4) Ervin Santana5) Chien-Ming Wang6) Freddy Garcia7) Ian Snell8) Kevin Millwood9) Anibal Sanchez10)Jose Contreras11)Chuck James12)Jon Garland13)Mark Buehrle14)Tim Hudson15)Cliff LeeI think it would be a good idea to address some of these guys for those of you that might be thinking about drafting them. First off, anyone not in my Top 45 probably isn't a very good guy to pick. They will all have faults.D-Train is a popular guy, but an overrated pitcher. Dontrelle, Contreras, Snell, Millwood, and Buehrle fall between #45 and #55. Snell has some potential to improve. He had a good K/9 and a decent GB Percentage. If he could keep the same GB Percentage and improve his control - the easiest of our 3 critical factors for young pitchers to improve - he could become a good fantasy pitcher. I wouldn't take him though just based on something he could do.Verlander, while popula...
