These Stocks Look Ripe for a Pullback
2012-02-08 04:00:00
As the market has crawled ever higher during the past three years, a clear theme has emerged: When the market slumps, investor pessimism gets carried to extremes; and when the market posts a strong rally, things are not as solid as they appear. Indeed, that's where I think we are right now. The markets are in the midst of another strong run, though considerable challenges remain. Sure, we've seen a slew of positive economic reports in recent days, but the U.S. economy is far from healthy. Perhaps of greater concern: companies are reporting that sales are rising faster than profits, a sure sign that profit margins are slipping back. So if the U.S. grows in the 2-3% . . . → Read More: These Stocks Look Ripe for a Pullback
The Best Stocks to Hold Forever
2012-02-02 19:00:00
A few months ago, I sent a report to readers of my Top 10 Stocks advisory covering my "10 Best Stocks to Hold Forever." It's quickly become one of the most popular pieces of research in StreetAuthority's history. Simply put, these are the 10 stocks that we think you can buy today and basically hold for the rest of your life. When you own them, you don't have to worry about events such as inflation or deflation, bear markets or recessions… flash-crashes or rising interest rates. Don't just take my word for it — the numbers speak for themselves… Since I went public with my 10 "Forever" stocks in mid-July, – They've returned 10.0% on . . . → Read More: The Best Stocks to Hold Forever
My Secret for Picking Consistent Winners in Gold Stocks
2012-01-31 19:00:00
Want to know the secret to a 669% gain in gold stocks? I'll tell you in a second, but first, some background… If you don't know what gold stocks are, they're pretty straightforward. Gold stocks consist of the gold miners, the companies that actually pull the yellow stuff out of the ground. I prefer gold stocks to bullion for a couple of reasons. For one, many miners pay regular dividends — whereas, to paraphrase Warren Buffett, gold bars just sit there and look at you. But more important — gold stocks offer considerable leverage over owning physical bullion. As the price of gold increases, production becomes more profitable, justifying a higher stock price for gold stocks. That's not . . . → Read More: My Secret for Picking Consistent Winners in Gold Stocks
The Best Way to Invest in Biotech Stocks
2012-01-26 19:00:00
The appeal of finding the right biotech stock is self-evident. If you get it right, and a cutting-edge biotech scores a major win with a breakthrough drug treatment, then you can score huge gains. Last month, I reviewed my performance over the course of 2011 in hopes of gleaning important new lessons for the coming year. Chief among those lessons: avoid companies that will need fresh injections of capital to keep afloat. I singled out the biotech sector, which not only faces the prospect of an uncertain economic environment in which to raise money, but is headed by executives who are simply clueless about how Wall Street works. So many biotech stocks waited far too long to . . . → Read More: The Best Way to Invest in Biotech Stocks
?Mania? in Junior Mining Stocks Predicted: Fayyaz Alimohamed
2012-01-25 22:30:00
The Gold Report: Fayyaz, in June 2008, using readily available economic data, you wrote that the global economy was on the verge of financial collapse. What do those sources tell you about where the global economy is headed today? Fayyaz Alimohamed: In November 2006, I predicted that the U.S. was headed into a recession. Seven months later, the Bear Stearns funds cracked, beginning the crisis. By June 2008 it was obvious to me that the crisis would escalate into a crash. Today, the U.S. cannot meet its gargantuan future unfunded liabilities. Europe and Japan face debt levels that ensure eventual sovereign debt defaults and declining standards of living. There is potential for all of this unwinding to seriously affect . . . → Read More: ‘Mania’ in Junior Mining Stocks Predicted: Fayyaz Alimohamed
2 Gambling Stocks You Can?t Afford to Ignore
2012-01-21 02:00:00
With such a slow economic recovery in the United States, many states are getting creative in how to increase their tax bases. Politicians read the news headlines and are well aware that gambling has taken off in parts of Asia, including Macau and Singapore. Current estimates are that Macau's gaming revenue reached $33.5 billion in 2011 and grew 42% compared with 2010 levels. The top 20 markets stateside brought in $31 billion in gaming revenue, and politicians are starting to wager that there is plenty of room for new domestic casinos. That's good news for investors in gambling-related stocks. Recent headlines are indicative of the coming wave of new gambling destinations. A bill in Florida is set . . . → Read More: 2 Gambling Stocks You Can’t Afford to Ignore
I?ve Found 18 Stocks that Could Have BIG Upside ? and Limited Downside
2012-01-20 03:30:00
Investors have sought out "GARP" stocks for decades. These investments, which represent Growth at a Reasonable Price, typically sport reasonable P/E ratios and possess superior growth prospects. There are a variety of ways to find such a combination of value and growth, but my preferred metric is the "PEG ratio." Companies with a PEG ratio below 1.0 means the forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is less than the forward earnings growth rates. (PEG is formally defined as the P/E divided by the earnings growth rate.) So I'm going hunting for extreme PEGs — stocks with P/E ratios less than one-fifth of the earnings growth rate, or a PEG below 0.2. The reason that number is so low: Every . . . → Read More: I’ve Found 18 Stocks that Could Have BIG Upside — and Limited Downside
This Biotech Stock Could TRIPLE
2012-01-17 19:00:00
The stock market has been insane the past few years, so many financial advisors are understandably steering clients toward safer blue-chip stocks. It's a sound strategy. Because of their dividends, blue chips are often a lot less volatile than the overall market and many have decent growth potential, too. Still, many investors would gladly tolerate the higher risk of smaller stocks for the chance to earn higher returns, and I think many of these stocks can be good additions to a diversified portfolio. One of my favorites, United Therapeutics Corp. (Nasdaq: UTHR), has certainly seen its share of risk, the latest example being a 25% loss in 2011. But the stock has seen plenty of good years, too, . . . → Read More: This Biotech Stock Could TRIPLE
Renewable Energy Stocks that Deliver: John McIlveen
2012-01-12 23:01:00
The Energy Report: John, what is your current investment thesis? John McIlveen: Safety is still the dominant concern with small-cap companies, which are high-risk by definition. I mostly stick with power generators. High-yield Independent Power Producers (IPPs) returned over 20% in 2011, whereas manufacturing was slammed as many sectors entered cyclical lows. The generators have 20-year contracts, which provide highly predictable cash flow. To buy the manufacturers, you really have to understand the cycles. TER: What’s the relationship between conventional energy prices and renewable energy stocks? Do higher conventional energy prices trigger a bounce in renewables? JM: Optimally, it would be better for renewables if conventional energy prices were higher. However, the reality is that renewable prices do . . . → Read More: Renewable Energy Stocks that Deliver: John McIlveen
2 Upstart Stocks with 50% Upside
2012-01-12 19:00:00
It's so hard for new companies to gain traction in a mature industry. A few big players typically control most of the market share, so when upstarts come along with a better set of products or services, they often get acquired by the big players anyway. Yet despite long odds, every year brings a new set of companies that are largely unfamiliar to investors. These companies push hard to boost sales at a fast pace, and once the revenue base hits a certain level, they can suddenly get a much bigger following on Wall Street. If successful, these companies can get swept up in a virtuous cycle of bullish research reports, increased hedge-fund interest, and analysis from folks . . . → Read More: 2 Upstart Stocks with 50% Upside
This Industry Giant?s Stock Could Gain 25%
2012-01-10 16:00:00
After a less-than-stellar performance for the S&P 500 in 2011, investors continue to scratch their heads as they try to figure out where to allocate capital for the New Year. Treasuries? Sure, if you want to pay too much, then take on more downside risk than you think and get paid next to nothing. The truth is, too many areas of the marketare stretched out like the cotton sweater I got from Target eight years ago that everyone in the house seems to borrow. But we can still find value out there. And one of my favorite stocks is pretty well known: a little fly-by-night outfit called International Paper (NYSE: IP). A popular screen for high yield stocks involves taking the Dow 30 industrial stocks, finding those with the highest dividend yield, and then sorting by P/E ratio. 5 Stocks For A Real Estate Rebound
2012-01-07 00:03:00
Are they finally here? A real bottom and ensuing rebound in the real estate market? Time will tell, but the recent housing data has at least been improving. Add to that, William Dudley, president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank, said today that proper monetary policy that complements other efforts by the government could help the housing within a year or two. President of the Boston Federal Reserve, Eric Rosengren, said the Fed could help the housing market by buying more mortgage backed securities, according to Reuters. The recent spate of good or less bad housing data aside, it should be noted the housing market is still a long way from being out of the woods. Then again, by waiting for the real estate market to look picture perfect, investors can easily miss some big gains in housing-related stocks. With that thought in mind, let's have a look at some stocks that are poised to benefit if and when the U.S. housing market legitimately rebounds.
Low Priced Stocks Are Worth It

People who are new to stock trading often discount the earning potential of low priced stocks. Instead, they confuse the high price tag of large cap stocks with incredible earning power. In reality, it is the other way around.

Take a Look at My "Cheat Sheet" of Undervalued Stocks
2012-01-05 16:00:00
They say stocks "climb a wall of worry." Well, investors now have something new to worry about. Concerns are growing that profit margins may have peaked for many companies in 2011 and could slip a bit in 2012 and 2013. It's a valid concern. In past economic cycles, companies operated in an ultra-lean fashion during periods of economic weakness, but needed to spend more money on staff and raw materials when the economy starts to strengthen. If profit margins have indeed peaked and earnings-per-share (EPS) growth is hard to muster, then investors are likely to focus on other metrics that help point the way toward value. My favorite litmus test for a stock's value is in the . . . → Read More: Take a Look at My "Cheat Sheet" of Undervalued Stocks
The Investing Advice That Makes Brokers Cringe
2012-01-03 19:30:00
It's one of the best investing strategies I know… and brokers hate it. Brokers are in the business to make money. Every time you make a trade, they collect a fee. This means they like it when you make as many trades as possible. They don't care if you win or lose — every time you trade in and out of stocks, they make money. That's why you'll rarely hear Wall Street downplay or speak too critically of trading… It's far too profitable for them. But the truth is… when you trade every day… or every week… or even every year, you might be forfeiting your chance of earning BIG returns. Why? Because the market's . . . → Read More: The Investing Advice That Makes Brokers Cringe
A New Economic Disorder ? When Old Western Powers & Emerging Markets Clash:

Year in Review: Digging into Potash Stocks
2011-12-29 23:00:00
Investing in agriculture can take many forms. Bob Moriarty, 321energy.com founder, shared his insights in a March article titled “Food Is Fuel.” He said: “Potash is used to make fertilizer. As food gets more valuable, potash gets more valuable. It’s not necessarily that you’re more efficient in the production of food. If the price of wheat doubles, farmers can afford twice as much potash. It’s not necessarily more efficient; it’s just cheaper in relative terms. The price of food is going to go higher and higher. Potash is around $600/ton now, but it could be $1,500/ton based on the cost of food today.” The trend will not continue forever, Moriarty cautioned. “Most companies are going to fail. 5 Dividend-Growth Stocks to Help You Get Richer
2011-12-29 19:00:00
I know of only one sure strategy for accumulating wealth over time, and that is to hold stocks with a consistent track record of dividend growth. The reason this strategy works is because dividend increases can be predicted in a way that share price gains cannot. For example, I can come up with many reasons why Coco-Cola (NYSE: KO) or General Mills (NYSE: GIS) will increase earnings next year, but I can't guarantee that either company will post share-price gains. But by looking at the dividend history, payout ratio and earnings growth expectations for both companies, I can estimate next year's dividend increase with fairly good accuracy. A modest 6% dividend increase on a portfolio of stocks . . . → Read More: 5 Dividend-Growth Stocks to Help You Get Richer
5 Solid Dividend Stocks that Could Turn into Mega High-Yielders
2011-12-22 19:00:00
For many investors, 2011 should be remembered as the year of the dividend.  Weary of market volatility, investors are flocking to dividend stocks to lock in yields often twice the meager 2% return on U.S. Treasuries. Dividend stocks will likely remain popular as long as fears of Europe's debt crisis and a double-dip recession grip the market. An added bonus is dividends that may get a nice boost next year if companies start distributing more of their record cash stockpiles to boost shareholder value. But investors shouldn't wait for dividends to be raised further. It's far smarter to lock in a 4% yield (which is still pretty good) from a solid company's shares now, for example, . . . → Read More: 5 Solid Dividend Stocks that Could Turn into Mega High-Yielders

5 Stocks with Growing Dividends to Buy Before the Year Ends
2011-12-14 19:00:00
Investors who need a reminder of why dividends are desirable should be getting it in spades this year, thanks to extreme market volatility. The price of the S&P 500 Index is barely at breakeven year-to-date, while income from dividends is at roughly $25 per share. Most of us buy stocks expecting prices to go up, which doesn't always happen. But the one aspect of stock investing that's actually predictable is dividends. In addition to providing a reliable source of income, dividends can be reinvested to build wealth over time. With a little research, you can find dividend-paying stocks that offer attractive yields and dividend increases for many years in a row. Here are five consistent high-yielding . . . → Read More: 5 Stocks with Growing Dividends to Buy Before the Year Ends
Gold Stocks: Still a Bargain
2011-12-14 17:31:00
By Jeff Clark, Casey Research We’ve been saying since September that gold producers are undervalued, and here are some data that show just how extreme the undervaluation is. The following chart measures the stock prices of major and intermediate gold producers against their Net Asset Value, based on the daily price of gold. In the simplest terms, a company should be worth more as the product it sells rises in price faster than the cost of those sales. In this case, gold has doubled in price over the past three years while costs have not kept up, dramatically increasing the intrinsic value of a reasonably well-run gold producer. Yet look what the stocks have done when measured against this . . . → Read More: Gold Stocks: Still a Bargain
Year-end Buying Opportunities Abound in Mining Stocks: Louis James
2011-12-12 21:00:00
The Gold Report: We’re now into year-end tax-loss selling season. How do you think 2011 will compare with previous years as far as the performance of resource stocks in the next several weeks and into 2012? Louis James: This should be an interesting year for tax-loss selling. Whether the market’s up or down, there is selling pressure at the end of the year. If people have a lot of gains, they want to sell underwater positions to offset them. If they have a lot of losses, they may do the same, planning to buy back in at the lower cost basis in the new tax year. In a down year like this, it’s certainly something to be aware . . . → Read More: Year-end Buying Opportunities Abound in Mining Stocks: Louis James
Four Small-Cap Energy Stocks to Watch: Josh Young

The Energy Report: Can you give us a little update on your current appraisal of the energy markets since we last spoke in July? Josh Young: It’s definitely been an interesting and tumultuous time. Oil and natural gas prices have ranged widely. A lot of that has had to do with a potential global financial crisis. There is sufficient global demand, particularly for oil, and limited supply, even in the midst of a potential demand reduction in Europe and other parts of the world. Prices have remained strong even as banks de-lever, which is a pretty powerful signal. 2 High-Tech Stocks with 50% Upside in 2012
2011-12-05 17:00:00
Here at StreetAuthority, we're always looking for "game-changing" stocks. In fact, my colleague Andy Obermueller has an entire newsletter dedicated to the subject. These "game-changers" are usually smaller firms that are developing revolutionary new products. Yet we also have our eye on larger, more well-established companies that seek to push the envelope, developing technologies that can enhance the customer's experience in new and different ways. These larger firms know heavy investments in research and development (R&D) are crucial. R&D efforts, which often yield a treasure trove of patents, can help them command firm pricing and generate impressive margins. Right now, there is a pair of "game-changers" I have my eye on. They may be well-known, but they . . . → Read More: 2 High-Tech Stocks with 50% Upside in 2012

Gold Stocks Should Win Regardless of Economic Turmoil: Chen Lin

In August, you were looking for a lower gold:silver ratio that you thought would probably be more reasonable under the circumstances. Yet it seems to have gone the other direction. What do you think has happened here? Was silver drastically overpriced or not able to keep up with the gold? Chen Lin: In the last interview, I was pretty evenly bidding between gold and silver. Chen Lin: The oil price has been going up and down because a lot of traders are mispositioned and are scrambling around. That makes the market very volatile. However, WTI is around $100 again, which is quite surprising because we are still in the middle of a recession. World oil demand is still there, and whenever there’s a drop in the oil price there’s a lot of buying. I’m quite surprised that oil is still around the $100 mark. Warning: Stocks Like This One Could Lose You 90% in Less Than a Year
2011-12-01 15:00:00
As an investor, I get unsolicited "get-rich-quick" investment advertisements. Lately, I've been swamped with them, which makes me worry. The economy is still struggling to find solid ground. The holidays are coming. And these two facts alone make investors more vulnerable to the kind of get-rich-quick pitches I see in many of the investment advertisements I receive. Most times, I just throw them away without another thought. But once in awhile, out of curiosity, I spend a few minutes researching their recommendations. For example, earlier this year I received a mailing that touted a "stealth" oil and gas play, apparently ready to pop for an 800% gain. The stock was Titan Oil & Gas (OTC: TNGS). Stocks in This Developed Country are too Cheap to Ignore
2011-12-01 03:30:00
I've been looking at stocks since I was in high school, back in the late 1970s. I eventually chose to turn my fascination with investments into a career. I figured stocks represented the single-best path to wealth creation, thanks to one simple statistic: If you hold an investment for an extended period, then history shows that riskier investments will generate better returns. This means during any 20-year period going back to the Great Depression, stocks always outperformed bonds, and bonds always outperformed cash. Because I was planning on a 50-year career, I was well prepared for short-term plunges, with the expectation that stocks would make up lost ground — and then some — during the subsequent decade. . . . → Read More: Stocks in This Developed Country are too Cheap to Ignore
3 More Warning Signs Your Stocks Are in Trouble
2011-11-29 06:30:00
Picking good stocks is only the first part of the formula for successful investing. The second part involves watching your portfolio for signs of trouble and culling stocks that become too risky. Two weeks ago, I listed three metrics I use to identify risky stocks. I'm always alert for increasing share sales by corporate insiders, dividends that exceed earnings, and insufficient income to cover future interest and principal payments. Any of these warning signs are enough to make me re-evaluate a holding and possibly sell. Here are three more red flags I also look for, including three examples of stocks in which may be wise for investors to avoid. As regular readers of this blog know, I am not a fan of Chinese stocks. My usual reason for not liking them is that I rarely trust their numbers. I am even less likely to invest in Chinese stocks now. I have two additional reasons for my increased pessimism regarding China stocks. The first is real estate and the second is loans. The Sydney Morning Herald just did an article, entitled, "Bonds show 60% of Chinese companies dabble in property," describing how about 60% of Chinese companies that sold bonds in the past six months admit that they invest in the property market. Of course nobody knows what percent of the 40% invest in real estate but have not come clean about that. One should assume that the numbers for China's publicly traded companies (on all exchanges) are somewhat similar. In addition to real estate investing, I have every reason to believe countless publicly traded Chinese companies are also in the business of engaging in grey market lending. Much grey market lending...

A Rare Second Chance to Buy these 5 Stocks
2011-11-22 14:45:00
Take your mind back to the third quarter of 2011. Companies were posting robust profits and investors were wading back into the market, helping to fuel a 15% gain in the S&P 500 from early October to the second week of November. But the just-ended earnings season must seem like an ancient history now, and investors are once again hitting the "sell" button. Since peaking at 1,278 on Nov. 8, the S&P 500 has already begun to cough up its gains and is now on its way to buckling back under the 1,200 mark. The sudden mood change must be especially hard to fathom for the companies that just delivered great third-quarter results, since several stocks posted double-digit . . . → Read More: A Rare Second Chance to Buy these 5 Stocks

2011-11-21 15:00:00
A little more than a week ago, I told you about a striking discovery that caught us a little off guard. Of the 21 best-performing income stocks of the past decade, 12 of them — 57% — come from the energy sector. (You can visit this link to see the full list of all 21 stocks.) Here's a sample of the high yields and strong returns we found in the energy sector… Permian Basin Royalty Trust (NYSE: PBT), a trust that owns royalty interests in oil-and-gas producing wells in Texas, returned 743% since 2001, thanks to its 6.8% yield.   North Euro Oil (NYSE: NRT), a trust that owns oil and gas royalty interests in Germany, yields . . . → Read More: The Top-Performing Income Stocks Many Investors Don’t Know About
Stay Away from These 12 Recent IPOs
2011-11-18 19:00:00
Insiders and directors of LinkedIn (Nasdaq: LNKD) have to be pleased with how their stock has performed since going public in May. A solid 64% gain in the past six months (while the Nasdaq has shed 7%) makes it one of the best performing initial public offerings (IPOs) of 2011. But when the board of directors was recently giving a final check-off on third-quarter results, they spotted a potential problem looming on the calendar. In mid-November, the insiders who were "locked-up" and prevented from selling all of their pre-IPO stock got the green light as the 180-day restriction period expired. The Board had ample reason to worry. One of the reasons the stock has performed so . . . → Read More: Stay Away from These 12 Recent IPOs

2 of the Cheapest Stocks You?ll Ever Find
2011-11-17 15:00:00
"Insurance is sold, not bought." This old saying may be true from the consumer side. From the shrewd investor's point of view, however, it's an entirely different story. Legendary value investor Shelby Cullom Davis, for instance turned $50,000 into a fortune of $800 million dollars by buying the stocks of deeply undervalued insurance companies during the dull markets of post-World War II. And if you're a Warren Buffett stalker, then no one has to tell you about the obscene wealth he has created for himself and fellow Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) shareholders through the company's ownership of auto insurer GEICO and other insurance operations. Despite the fact that Davis had a bit of an edge, since got . . . → Read More: 2 of the Cheapest Stocks You’ll Ever Find
Gold Stocks Are Also Beginning To Look Attractive For A Change
2011-11-15 18:40:00
Gold stocks are also beginning to look attractive for a change Gold has been almost as volatile as the stock market since August. After becoming overheated in July and early August, it plunged $340 an ounce to its low of $1,592 in late September. In one brief period in September it collapsed $214 an ounce in just four days. Not surprisingly that cooled off the excitement and euphoria of the previous two months. The sudden plunge pushed the popular expectation that gold would reach $2,000 and $2,500 an ounce within weeks into the background. It had investors paying more attention to George Soros’ assessment of last spring that gold was in a bubble that would end . . . → Read More: Gold Stocks Are Also Beginning To Look Attractive For A Change
Buffett Just Spent $7 BILLION on These "Forever Stocks"
2011-11-15 17:00:00
When the going gets tough, the tough… break out their checkbooks? After seeing stocks crater this summer, this is precisely what Warren Buffett did through his investment firm Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B). Buffett and his team invested $7 billion in the third quarter. To put that in perspective, that's more than twice the amount of buying he did just a quarter earlier and nine times the amount he bought in the first quarter. You'd have to go back to the late 1990s to find the last time Buffett was so aggressive. (Back then, a global currency crisis led by the Thai baht and the Russian ruble put a temporary scare in more faint-hearted investors.) The fact . . . → Read More: Buffett Just Spent $7 BILLION on These "Forever Stocks"
Higher Oil Prices Could Punish These Stocks
2011-11-12 02:00:00
A recent front-page article in The Financial Times warned of the prospects of $200 oil. The respected financial publication predicted that any further tensions between Iran and the West — including a bombing raid by Israel to take Iran's nuclear facilities off-line — would quickly create chaos in the oil pits. After all, Iran is the world's third-largest exporter of oil (after Saudi Arabia and Russia), so any shutdown of oil production in that country would create a sharp shock in the tenuous balance between supply and demand. It doesn't help that Libya's production remains well below recent peaks, and Yemen and Syria are seeing turmoil-related drops in oil output. These problems have already led to a . . . → Read More: Higher Oil Prices Could Punish These Stocks
