OUTSOURCING COLLEGE EDUCATION
2012-01-31 07:43:00 Foreign Policy magazine recently published an eye-opening article about the economic value of an education abroad. What they did was compare the median cost of one year of an American undergraduate education ($9,000 USD) with that of an average international one ($4,000 USD). While money wasn't the only factor explored (there's also the question of quality, of course), the article does point out some rather startling examples, like how even though South Africa's University of Cape Town has a higher QS ranking than The University of Notre Dame, attending the latter is a whopping $32,000 USD more. Incredible! Check out the full piece here.
For-profit college:The slippery slope and student loan debt
2012-01-20 13:41:00 As much as the general public wants to blame for-profit universities for false promises, the people who apply to these schools should shoulder some of the blame. People should look into the school that they apply to before they are crushed by student loans. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is suing local for-profit university... Read more »

Art Student Hangs Up Own Painting at National Museum .....So There !!!
2012-01-04 17:00:00 Art Student Hangs Own Painting At National Museum....So There !!! If you see this photograph hanging in an art museum with the signing of k.a.m (the kamera). It's Mine. I hung it there because I am role modelling and copying the art student who recently did the self same outrageous thing. This idea could catch on for people who do not have time to wait for "the rest of the world" to discover the new artist. It's an ingenious idea and courageous too. Full of shameless self promotion, without any of that "Who Do They All Think They Are" authoritarianism that always keeps people in the rightful places. You, my friend, are going to die waiting for that starving artist moment and every artist knows that for a fact. It's called "The Artist's Lament" Here's an idea that might catch on. HangUp Your OWN painting at an art museum and see how long it takes the authorities to notice. In this case of the art student, it took ...

Microsoft India To Give WP7 Handsets To Student App Developers
2011-10-07 07:30:00 So far, Windows Phone 7 hasn’t exactly gained global popularity. While it has been hailed for its visually stunning Metro UI, it has lagged behind competitors like Android and iOS in two aspects. The first is functionality with several basic features missing. With Microsoft’s recently released Mango update and is now available with over 500 new features added. While the second problem was the lack of apps, Microsoft India has thought of an innovative new way to counter this: get students involved. Known as the “i unlock joy†Program, it is running from August 1st till December 18th, 2011. The aim of this project is to get students to start developing Apps for WP7 and in return, Microsoft will actually be giving them Windows Phone Devices to keep for themselves. Here’s how students can develop Apps and get themselves WP7 Devices: Sign Up at the Microsoft DreamSpark Portal here Register for the “i unlock joy” Program here Download the Windows Pho...

Bring the World into Your Home - host an international exchange student
2011-03-16 19:38:00 A few years ago, I detailed 10 Ways to Bring the World into Your Home, in an article for Chicago Parent. One of my recommendations was: Host a foreign exchange student. Your children will learn firsthand about the language and customs of another culture and in turn, develop a lifelong friendship. If you can find a student that speaks the language your child studies at school (or hopes to study), all the better. If your child's school doesn't offer world languages (grrrr), hosting a student from overseas is a great way to learn a new language: you can trade English speaking time for some French, Italian, Chinese speaking time. As a bonus, you'll have another reason to take a...

Ergonomic & Electric: A Student Designs A 'Scooter' For Seniors

Are Student Loans Worth the Debt?
2010-10-23 10:41:00 This is a very difficult question to answer. These days, it seems like it?s almost impossible to get a foot in the door without first earning a degree. And you definitely can?t expect to advance beyond a certain point without one. On the other hand, cutbacks in state funding have swept the nation during the recession, causing most schools to raise costs left and right in an effort to keep facilities and staff in operation. Although most states have limits on percentage of increase for tuition, schools have been able to skirt the laws by adding all kinds of fees that never materialize into actual useable goods and services for the students who pay them. And what is a degree really worth these days anyway? Will spending a ton of money on your higher education even result in a job that will allow you to pay for said schooling? These are all valid questions that every student should be asking as their parents shove them towards college. Think long and hard about what you want to d...

Campus Question: Being a Student In Chicago
2010-10-15 05:02:00 Sorry for the hiatus last week, midterms and the hectic college life can be a little overwhelming at times. However, the college life is exactly what we wanted to talk about this week with the Campus Question. ChiU is all about being a college student in Chicago, but how does this part of our identity play into our everyday lives. So for this week we decided to ask:

Duke Student Writes About Her "Horizonatal Academics"
2010-10-08 05:45:00 Duke Girl in Hot Water for Sex ListMaybe you heard of this one. A college student chronicles their sexual experiences and circulates it among a few friends. However, in the twenty-first century, that can be a dangerous thing, especially if you are a female, and one the friends passes it along to someone else. Karen Owen, a recent graduate of Duke (or as I like to call it - Dook) made a very nice forty-two page power point with graphs and ranking of the thirteen men she bedded during her college tenure in Durham. As a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, I get great satisfaction as seeing someone from (snicker, snicker) The University of New Jersey at Durham getting in trouble.Check a...

"This is the DePaul Student"
2010-08-17 01:53:00 In "This is the DePaul Student," written in the September 22, 1961 issue of The DePaulia (Volume 40, Issue No. 1), it is said Bill Granger writes, "A writer can't describe in a few columns or even a few volumes what this whole thing called DePaul University is about. A person has to live it and feel it. It's more fun that way." Despite Granger's uncertainty about describing the DePaul student body, he attempts to do so and comes to these many conclusions. Within the 9,000 students, there are over eighty organizations, including fraternities, sororities, publications and "what-have you." Students work anywhere from five hours a week to fifty and commute up to 30 miles away, although some live within a stones throw...
Evan Turner vs. Purdue Student Section: Twitter SMACKDOWN
2010-07-17 00:34:00 Former Ohio State legend Evan Turner has already completed his first NBA Summer league, but that hasn't stopped the fans of his old Big Ten rivals from still talking smack at him online. I guess when you shoot just 33%, and your play doesn't come anywhere close to living up to your hype during the five game NBA summer season, detractors will come out of the woodwork. Including whomever runs the Twitter account for The Paint Crew, Purdue's student cheering section. This is good stuff- enjoy!... |
