Lincoln Park High School might provide a safe haven for Fenger High School students who sued Chicago Public Schools for the right to be allowed to transfer.According to an article on Chicago Breaking News, a plan was approved in court on Tuesday that would allow the ten Fenger students who sued CPS to transfer to Morgan Park High School, Julian High School, Lincoln Park Academy, or the selective enrollment school, Carver Military Academy.A Medill report on Tuesday said that it is unclear why school officials selected these schools or why only students listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit would be granted immediate transfers.Lincoln Park Academy is the only one of the four schools that is not located on the far...

Can School Data Save Students?
2009-11-25 17:36:00
"Performance management" is one of those buzz phrases that I usually like to make fun of, but I did my best to withhold judgment last week when I had the chance to talk with Lori Fey from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, which is all over the concept and has a new report out on the topic. Plus which, my favorite Bush-era press guy Kevin Sullivan pitched it to me. Five years ago there were "precious few" examples of performance management in school settings, according to Fey, and now there are at least 18 district examples and 14 charter networks doing it.  The newest cohort of Dell grantees includes Denver, Charlotte-Meckl, and PG County.  Chicago was one of the...
Stevenson High to j-students: publish or perish
2009-11-25 17:29:00
Because I've been in the newspaper racket for decades, folks will assume that I'm on the side of the Stevenson High School students who are fighting with the administration over what they can publish in the school newspaper.I'm not. How can I say this with the obligatory amount of sensitivity so I don't hurt anyone's feelings? The newspaper doesn't belong to the students; the school is the publisher. The school pays for the printing and the instruction. The school decides what goes on in the classrooms. A publisher gets to decide what goes into his paper and what doesn't. Editors (employees) who refuse to follow policy can be disciplined and fired. That's the reality of it. If the journalism teachers...

Wash U. Students Stick It to Mother's
2009-11-02 14:25:00
Photo: MorguefileI love code words, and one of my favorite code words for "no black people" is "dress code." I also love clubs and bars--where the unchallengeable goal of the establishment is to get its customers as drunk as possible, consequences be damned--that still have "dress codes." On October 17th six black students from the Washington University in St. Louis attempted to walk into the Gold Coast bar Original Mother's for a party that the class treasurer Regis Murayi, 21, had arranged three weeks earlier (you know, one of those wrist-bracelet jobbies where you're compelled to drink as much Bud Light as possible to make the $25 worth it?). They were denied entry under the "no baggy pants" (i.e....
Recall issued for high school students who read 'Soul on Ice'
2009-10-29 04:07:00
The American Association of High School Principals and Administrators has issued a recall on students who read the late Black Panther activist Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice, a book that chronicled black rage in the 1960s. High school students who were assigned Soul on Ice from its publication in 1968 until Cleaver's repudiation of his Black Panther past in 1975 may contain a dormant ideology that could erupt at any time, according to Dante Van Cleave, an association spokesman....
Microsoft Ties-up With JNTU, Offers Free Softwares To Students
2009-10-28 07:02:00
One of the perks of being a student is that you do tend to get a lot of discounts on software and products. However, Microsoft took it way ahead when it lunched the DreamSpark programme. It provides no-cost access to Microsoft designer and development tools for verified students around the world, to support and advance their learning and skills through technical design, technology, math, science and engineering activities. Bill Gates had launched this programme initially in February 2008, it has later officially launched the same in India in November 2008, and the current vision is to target even school students. It is estimated that a whopping 35 million students will be able to access these software titles free of charge through this programme. Currently Dream Spark is functional in 11 countries including India, the other being United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Spain and China. Rider: Students not a class act
2009-10-27 01:35:00
Michelle Jones of Irving Park has learned an important lesson from her morning bus ride: Commuting with students can be a pain.Jones, 47, said her commute on the No. 80-Irving Park bus to the Brown Line was a "dream"--until September, when school started.Jones said she now deals with students who "hog the middle of the CTA bus, refusing to move for anyone and barely letting anyone else by" or students who "cram into the back-door stairwell ... [like] a game of Twister gone wrong."...

CTA rider: Students worsen my commute
2009-10-19 23:00:00
Michelle E. Jones, 47, of Irving Park wrote to "Going Public" with a complaint about her commute. Her letter continues after the jump."I see from your map you have yet to experience the pleasure of an early morning commute on the No. 80 or No. 80X Irving Park Bus route. On a good day, the commute from California and Irving Park Road to the Quincy Brown Line stop takes 45 minutes. In fact, when I started commuting to my new temp job above Union Station in April, the speed of the trip amazed me.At first I thought it was a fluke, but day after day the commute was a dream. I'd leave my house at 7:00 a.m., get downtown at a...
CTA rider: Welcome, students
2009-10-15 20:00:00
Anne Wagemaker of Logan Square wrote to "Going Public" to say she is happy to share her CTA bus with high school students."Every morning I get up and ride a bus to a train to another train to get from my Logan Square home to my job on the southeast side of the city. I leave bright and early around 6:15 a.m.The bus and both trains are often filled with high school students making very long commutes to get to school. While the afternoon rambunctiousness of these same students might cause other riders to become annoyed, I am constantly impressed with these kids.Making an hour long trip long before 7 a.m. to get to high school? They obviously have a...
Two Thirds Of State Students Suck At Math - Still

Even if you don't give a whit about CPS or poor minority kids, these results should give you pause when you think about what we're being told by the city (which, using a different much easier test, gives a much higher number).

Why College Students Should Get a Credit Card NOW

“Student” and “credit cards” are words many people don’t like to hear mentioned in the same sentence. Helping students find purpose.
2009-08-13 14:49:00
In his article, “The Moral North Star,†William Damon urges educators to help students connect what they do in school to their lives. All of us in education like to believe that we can help students find out what they are great at! It’s a phrase I’ve used at various Freshman Orientations and other occasions a number of times to encourage students to get involved, try everything, and explore all of their potential talents. In order for students to connect with school, with classes, with a team, or with something larger then themselves, they must become aware that they make a difference. “My actions matter†must be a thought that is real to students according to Damon. That means that educators have to help students discover a way to “contribute something of value through an engaging activity†that draws on academic, athletic, or artistic skills. In this time of accountability through standardized testing, Damon warns us not to forget that our purpose is to get “stude...

Attacks By Hooligans Against Foreign Students In Australia
2009-06-05 01:06:00
In relation to attacks against foreign students in Australia, there are some tough questions. The issue is complex, and not as portrayed either by certain sections of the Indian media and zealots nor by an isolated but powerful and disgraceful class of radio biggots and their poorly-educated audiences we have in Australia, known as 'shock jocks'. No amount of misrepresentation can alter the facts that most Australians do not engage in nor approve of racism. Many who have migrated to this country from a great many countries attest to this fact. I offer some questions - very preliminary - that I think my fellow Australians will need to consider:
Indian Students Attacked In Melbourne Australia: Cricket Star Brett Lee Voi
2009-06-03 21:46:00
Brett Lee is a prominent example of strong ties between India and Australia. It is good that someone with his credibility has stepped forward to bring calm to the situation following recent attacks on Indian students in Melbourne. Unless leaders with credibility in both countries make their voices heard, discussions about the relative roles played by racism and sheer, opportunistic street thuggery looking for "soft targets" will not have a proper chance to be heard.
Attacks Against Indian Students in Melbourne, Australia
2009-06-02 00:16:00
There have been attacks against Indian students in Melbourne, Australia. Yesterday's news reported what is alleged to have been a peaceful demonstration waylaid by a small number of anti-social elements. This blog recently reported Channel NineMSN's exposure of security personnel violence against protesting staff and disabled clients at SWARA in Brisbane. Reports that suggest the Melbourne protest was derailed by over-reaction of authorities, brought back eery reminders of those accounts which a number of those involved (including those who remain Sathya Sai Baba devotees) have given.

Gradefund: Corporate Sponsorship For Students Who Get Good Grades!
2009-05-21 21:44:00
Last week, I introduced you to Do Good for Debt, an organization that partners individuals with student loans leftover from their educational pursuits with charities that are willing to pay off students' debts in exchange for good deeds. While that may be a helpful way for former students to get back on their feet and start their lives without the burden of financial restraint, there's no denying that it takes away from the philanthropist attitude; so today I will outline another business that helps students overcome the financial repercussions of pursuing a post-secondary education. Gradefund offers a sponsorship-style system, that rewards students for their good grades, that way the better they do, the more corporate sponsors they'll have behind them to pay off their debts before they even have a chance to accumulate.

Students Protest Mean-Spirited Commencement Speaker
2009-04-22 00:51:00
The Tea Parties showed how conservative and libertarians could use new media to organize and promote their ideas. Now, Glenn provides us with an example of how conservative students are using the web to protest their school’s choice of a mean-spirited partisan to deliver a commencement address: About 130 American University students have signed an online petition of sorts asking the school’s administration to withdraw an invitation to Barney Frank, who is slated to deliver a commencement address at AU’s School of Public Affairs in a few weeks. It seems these students are smart enough to read beyond the headlines and the MSM coverage of the financial meltdown.  They know that Republican politics and corporate greed did not cause the collapse, writing on their Facebook page As young Americans across the country continue to lose their jobs and “rising” college graduates struggle to find employment post-grad, should American University honestly be honorin...
