Chinese Students In America. It's Bad Out There.
2012-01-11 23:28:00
Much has been written about Chinese students coming to American colleges. An article out today, entitled, "Chinese applications to U.S. schools skyrocket," starts out quoting a Chinese high schooler who is contemplating attending the University of Washington: I know this [ambition] is pretty high,” said the 17-year old Beijing native.  “But I think I can give it a shot.”  To prepare, Duan wants to study international relations at an American college – someplace like the University of Washington. “I hear [it] is good at social science," she said. The University of Washington is one of approximately 10 U.S. universities Duan plans to apply to in the coming year with the help of an education consultant she hired last summer. That got me to thinking about the complaints (yes, it has been nothing but complaints) I have heard from college students (the majority of whom are at the University of Washington) about their fell...

Crackdown on uni students: BN?s awful start to New Year
2012-01-01 11:25:00
The high-handed police action action against the university students at Tanjung Malim has handed the BN an awful start to the New Year. With one fell swoop, it has exposed the farce of Najib’s plan to supposedly transform the country into the “world’s best democracy”. A student is lying injured in hospital. Let’s state the [Read more]
New Menu Excites Food Police, Not Students
2011-12-30 18:51:00
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force him to drink. That old adage is proving true when it comes to improving school lunches. The Los Angeles Times recently examined the- failure of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s introduction of healthy lunches. We’ve seen before the consequences of taking away chocolate and strawberry milk in schools, but now L.A. schools have taken menu changes in the name of health even further. The new menu includes vegetarian creations such as curries, quinoa salads, and Pad Thai noodles, which predictably drew praise from the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). But are students really better off with fewer choices? The kids left hungry don’-t think so. The problem, as explained by many students, is that the district-approved food is “nasty.” When faced with the new menu, it isn’t hard to see why two high school juniors conceded to eating more junk food now than last year...
Rain Rain, Go Away... My Poor, Starving, College Students are Here!
2011-12-21 17:00:00
Rain rain, go away....  I feel like all it's done since moving here is rain.  We get a brief respite from it for a day or two (of clouds) and then it's back.  No wonder there is so much mold down here. This house finally has a real family in it.  Yes, the two older kids arrived last night.  Being poor, starving college students, all they could talk about, text about and think about was food.  The texts started while they were still on the plane;"Do you have lots of food?""No.  We have cookies.  And milk.  But that is for Santa. We have some Ramen noodles though.""Noooooooooo!"*grin*The- drive home made my son insane as I would announce that we still had 5 more miles to go.  Still had 2 more miles to go.  LOL. All he could do is talk about how hungry he was.  (They had not ate all day as he only had $6 in his pocket and didn't want to spend it on an airport sandwich!).  In reality, I broke our budget 2 days a...

It also eliminates the concept of day zero or day one on college campuses.” The response is great; over 2,400 colleges and 180,000 students across India have registered. Mr. Modi further revealed,”The concept of this integration arose out of  Mumbai-based IT company Syntel’s recruiting dr...

Ex- Sathya Sai Baba Students Could Aid Sex Abuse Change In India. But Will
2011-08-05 06:45:00
A few years ago, I addressed an 'open letter' to my former Whitefield College Students. On re-reading, I see that its terms can fairly be addressed (give or take the occasion specific reference) to all alumni, past and present. There have been so many revelations of great and pervasive corruption both in Sathya Sai Baba himself and in many of his officials (especially his core servitors) that it may not go amiss to post this communication here. Thousands of Sathya Sai education alumni face a dilemma not only in their immediate communities but wherever they may settle or travel. It is hard to imagine a major education institution in which a founder and certain teachers and Trust officials have been so deeply embroiled in scandal. But when, with searching analyis and deeply thought-through remedial action, what can be so terrible can, with great good will, be transformed into something that is so wonderful. And these alumni, potentially, are faced with a great challenge. Examples ...

News: Institute students play SAE Main stage at Shoreditch Festival
2011-07-11 19:38:00
The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance is delighted to announce that they will be represented by two of their student bands, Fracture and The Vacations when they take to the SAE main stage at the Shoreditch Festival on Saturday 16th July. SAE invited the Institute, as their music performance partner, to join them in hosting a ?Battle of the Bands? held at 93 Feet East in June. Bands and artists from the Institute applied to play through social media initiatives. A shortlist of six bands was invited to compete at the event. Representatives from the Institute, SAE and the Shoreditch Trust then selected two acts to play the SAE Main Stage at the festival sharing the stage with indie-elctro dancefloor fillers ?The Whip?! Fracture impressed with their energy, performance and high-level of musicianship, whilst The Vacations were equally impressive with their memorable songs and well-written hooks. The bands were very different in style but both showed these qualities which the In...
AIIMS Starts E-Book Facility For Doctors And Students
2011-06-28 14:03:00
AIIMS, the sixty nine year old finest health institute in the country just set a new example by starting an e-book facility for all resident doctors and students. The service will be accessible via Wi-Fi. Apparently, the concept was in discussion since last year. “We have finally got an e-book facility. We have given the list of e-books and journals to the administration. The list was submitted in May 2010, and at last we got a few e-books for us,” said Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, president, Resident Doctors Association (RDA), AIIMS. Incidentally, the latest buzz in market pertains to the possible entry of Amazon in India. Although, a comparatively low PC penetration of around 35% in Indian households and a mere 9% of the overall internet population form a relatively poor base towards forming a target segment for e-books in India, Amazon’s entry may rightfully change the current scenario. Similar inclination have been shown by Flipkart, a Bangalore based start-up with over ...

UP Students To Get Their Own Web Pages
2011-06-14 11:37:00
The Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Department has instructed all universities in the state to prepare a database of their students to facilitate the process of students getting their own web pages. Uptron Powertronics Ltd and Shreetron India Ltd would be developing the required software to set up a centralized database of students in all the state universities. The UP government had given similar instructions to state universities in June last year as well, but didn’t get a good response. It hopes to avoid a repeat by allocating funds of nearly Rs. 17 lakhs to each university. Currently two of the four government colleges in UP don’t even have their own website. Osama Manzar, in his column called Digital World at livemint highlighted the same problem calling it India’s poverty in the virtual world. He says: India has almost 1.6 million schools, mostly located in rural areas. Internet connectivity would be in less than 0.5% schools, and not more than 10% have webs...

DePaul journalism students hit the streets - and rails - for Red Line Proje

The CTA's Red Line truly connects the city of Chicago from north to south -- and is fodder for great stories. After all, where would CTA Tattler be without it?A journalism instructor at DePaul University recognized those simple facts, and gave birth to a stunning class assignment, the Red Line Project.Mike Reilley, the instructor and site architect, pulls out an apt analogy to explain the idea for the Red Line Project site: "I concepted the site when studying at The Poynter Institute, a journalism think-tank, in the Summer of 2009. The idea was rooted in an analogy I had used for years to explain to students the difference between the Internet and the Web -- to think of the Internet...

-By Warner Todd Huston Today a left-wing, anti-American student at Louisiana State University wanted to burn a flag for, he claimed, "due process for students and suspected terrorists alike." Yeah. Whatever. As it happens, the students he was claiming to represent didn't seem to appreciate his idea, though. Several hundred of them turned out to the place where he appeared and drowned out his sniveling statement with loud chants of "USA, USA." This nebbish was unable to get his little screed spoken and when water balloons began to pelt him the cops quickly moved him out putting an end to the whole scene. It was epic fail for this dude's blather. Now, let me say that I am thrilled to...

Advice for Considering Transfer Students
2011-03-28 16:30:00
Let me preface by stating that I am not transferring from DePaul. It is my lucky roommate that is taking the plunge into unchartered territory and dropping this glorious waste of money which we call the largest private Catholic school in the nation. And after much back and forth talk, we decided that it is a good plunge regardless of the high risk factor that comes with it. My roommate, Johanna, is a sophomore in college with a major track in Public Relations and Advertising. Claiming the same major, it has been clear to me throughout the past two years that we did not share the same passion for the profession. Johanna's interests were in fashion, celebrities, and all the...

Tom Hess: Why Guitar Teachers Find It Difficult To Get Guitar Students
2011-01-11 00:00:00
Why Guitar Teachers Find It Difficult To Get Guitar Students by Tom HessDo you have a hard time finding more guitar students? Do your guitar teaching ads and website not seem to really work like you want them to? Are you tired of constantly pouring massive efforts into promotion and not getting enough students from it? Does it seem next to impossible to keep your teaching schedule full? If you are like most guitar teachers, you probably really struggle to market your guitar teaching effectively. There are many reasons why this happens, but there are two main problems that apply to almost all guitar teachers who struggle with attracting a lot of new students. First, most guitar teachers lack the necessary marketing knowledge to write really good ads, create websites that work or use innovative methods to attract a lot of new guitar students. Second, they have a deep misunderstanding about how the process of attracting new guitar students works. What makes things even worse is th...

In a move that could possibly be a challenge to the Ministry of HRD, Govt. Of India’s plan to roll out the $35 Tablet PC, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in collaboration with Rice University, Singapore is releasing a new low cost, solar-powered tablet named I-Slate. It would be ultra-lean on power usage as well. . In March 2009, IEEE identified I-Slate as one of the seven technologies that will change the way people interact with machines, the world and each other. According to a release, this breakthrough will enable more than 100 million of Indian rural students, who attend classes without any sign of electricity, to get access to electronic slates in lieu of their normal and boring slates. This kind of sustainable and low-cost technology development will also help India realize its full economic potential. With prototypes being built by three UG students at the Rice University, I-Slate is currently being developed at Institute of Sustainable and Applied ...

HRD Ministry Joins Hands With UID Authority For Students In India

HRD has been in the news off late, and mostly for good reasons. Unlike promising and failing to deliver as in the past, the ministry of Human Resources Development came good with the $35 tablet and recently issued a tender for the same. Now in another interesting and thoughtful move, HRD has teamed up with the UID authority to keep track of a student’s movement. Through this collaboration As per the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed, UIDAI will help keep a record of all students, right from kindergarten to graduation. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal hopes to have the unique identification numbers printed on everything from report cards, merit certificates to transfer certificates. HRD also plans to link education loans and scholarship to the students educational history. This will help employers as well in identifying a students original marklist, and thus his performance through the course of his education. The ministry will also put in place an institutional mechanism to e...

Papalote Students Visit Crococun
2010-09-11 18:47:00
Unbelievably, somehow, I have managed to spend six years in Playa del Carmen with small children and NEVER managed to visit Crococun. So, when the 1st grade class at El Papalote School solicited chaperones for a field trip to the small eco-zoo and reptile farm, I jumped at the chance. Frankly, I think I was more excited than Cole. So, last week, we piled the students into cars and made the trip 30 minutes north to Puerto Morelos. Unlike my husband, who has an aversion to all things that crawl on their bellies, I happen to really dig snakes and the like and want my kids to develop a healthy appreciation for them as well. As we are planning to build in the jungle, they are going to need to be able to identify both friend and foe and this gave us all a good chance to take a look at some of the indigenous species that will likely cross our paths. The residents of the zoo are almost entirely creatures that are found in this area of Mexico. Some were quite familiar to us, like the coatimu...
