Thank You Taiwan
2009-06-03 15:29:00 I love numbers and statistics. I spend hours each week reviewing sports statistics and have become addicted to ESPN's Streak for Cash game. Before I had access to my checking account online, I used to scour my account to make sure the total was exactly correct. If I was off by even 1 cent, I would have to figure out where I was off.Naturally, I also like seeing how many people visit my blog each day. Google Analytics is a great program for all of my number geeky-ness (is this a word?) in that I can compare the number of visitors from one month to the next and see where visitors came from. Someone from Burundi visited my blog on Monday. I had to look at a map to even see where Burundi is located. (It's in Africa bordering Rwanda, Congo and Tanzania.)So yesterday, the number of visitors to Sean's Ramblings was fairly normal through the morning, and then something happened. Take a look at this chart copied just after 11pm on Tuesday night:Holy crap! A huge day for Trivia Tuesd...

Taiwan & China: In harmony?
2009-05-14 06:00:00 "Taiwan and Mainland China are a step closer to a more harmonious relationship," says Yiannis Mostrous. In The Silk Road Investor, he looks at an ETF that will benefit from this trend."Nearly a year ago, I forecast that 'Taiwan could be the biggest out-of-consensus investment story--along with Japan--as the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close.'"The government in Beijing has now given its blessings for public health officials from Taiwan to attend, as observers, the 62nd World Health Assembly (WHA) meeting in Geneva, 18 to 27 May. "Note that the WHA assembly is only open to “Member States,” a definition that has given China the ability to block Taiwanese participation for a long time."It’s clear that the Chinese government has decided to reward the Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou efforts to expand Taiwan’s presence in the international scene, in cooperation with the Mainland. "Furthermore, both s...

Top Asian techs: Infosys (INFY) & Taiwan Semi (TSM)
2009-03-09 05:00:00 "Asian markets now trade at valuations below those of other recession periods, yet investors remain extremely negative and unwilling to buy growth," says Asian stock specialist Yiannis Mostrous (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2886).The- editor of The Silk Road Investor (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2886) explains, "This combination will allow prudent bargain-hunters to position themselves for the next cycle." Here, he looks at two Asian favorites: Infosys Technologies (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=infy) (NSDQ: INFY (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=infy)) and Taiwan Semiconductor (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=tsm) (NYSE: TSM (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=tsm))."Asian markets will lead the next leg up, as structural improvements fuel recovery. My long-term bullishness on Asia is summed up in two simple words: economic change. "Global economic leadership changes over time, and th...

Taiwan Semi (TSM): 'Best of breed' bargain
2008-12-19 06:00:00 "If there’s a silver lining in this year’s meltdown, it’s that many 'best of breed' stocks are trading at their lowest levels in recent memory and have become fair game for bargain hunters," says John Christy (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2653).In- his industry-leading The Forbes International Investment Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2653), he explains, "Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=tsm) (NYSE: TSM (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=tsm)) is a name that belongs on anyone’s short-list of Asia’s greatest technology success stories.""Based near Taipei in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan Semiconductor is the world’s largest independent semiconductor foundry, with revenue of $9.7 billion in fiscal 2007, and a current market cap of $35 billion."The company produces state-of-the-art chips on a contract basis for customers including AMD...
Some Remarks on the Minority Languages Question
2008-10-12 08:53:00 The recent posts on minority languages have elicited some interesting comments. Commenting on The Record of Communist Language Policy, silver, a Serb, notes: In Eastern Europe, a similar thing occurred with the fall of the Communist regimes. In general, nationalist regimes took their place and quickly began attacking minorities and minority tongues. This has been most pronounced in the former Yugoslavia.I'm not aware of Serbian nationalists attempting to suppress Hungarian or Albanian. Even throughout the supposedly nationalist Milosevic era I think Hungarians were able to graduate university in Hungarian (and, of course, Albanian in Kosovo). I'm pretty sure Albanian has fared better in Macedonia under independence than during Yugoslavia; little-known Vlach certainly has. A new poster, A Jew Coming to Get You, who will be tolerated as long as he behaves, notes: A relevant book discussing Soviet nationality policy is called Affirmative Action Empire. Regarding the Chinese dialect...

Taiwan & Thailand
2008-07-12 17:28:00 I wrote up a quick entry for my last post as I was just about to hop on a plane to go to Taiwan and later Thailand. It seems I have returned from my tropical journey and all I can say is Sydney is damn cold! I really hate the cold, but I don't mind New York or Beijing kind of cold because at least that means 24 hour heating. Shanghai or Sydney cold isn't actually cold enough to have that kind of heating and using the air con non stop is such a waste of energy, and thus I am cold at home as well as cold outside. So I have to say I thoroughly loved my tropical holiday in Taiwan and Thailand. My first stop was Taipei, Taiwan where my family and I stayed for 2 days. We went to the Night Markets on the first night which was a lot of fun. The Night Markets are just roads of small food, clothes and accessories stalls. Bargaining is a must there, but you can't bargain off a lot though since they prices are already quite cheap. I was trying to put on a Taiwanese accent while bargaining but...

The island's financial sub-index closed down 0.72 percent, underperforming the broad market , which ended 0.05 percent l...

TOSHIBA SOURCING LCD TV PARTS FROM TAIWAN, WANTS TO PUT THING UNDER WRAP
2008-05-30 22:36:00 Toshiba has become the first Japanese maker to outsource production of its LCD panels, from Taiwan. The deal is on from last February, but the news has only broken out now. Fishy, no? Toshiba has formally (and finally) acknowledged the fact it is outsourcing LCD panels from Taiwan but has rejected to name the contractor. So, first it did not want to inform the whole world about the outsourcing thing, and now it is hiding the contractor's name as well. Hmm….may be to keep the whole world to keep faith in its products. The sourcing parts clad television sets will hit the US market first and gauging the response the management will roll out its global plan further. Toshiba also is planning a new portable video player during 2010. Don't have time to visit the blog often? Let me send you outsourcing news, views, career tips, analysis, joke, humor, even bitching of the outsourcing world as they are publsihed in BPOTiger. You may subscribe here.
