Rasmussen: 64% Prefer a Government With Fewer Services And Lower Taxes
2012-05-22 19:24:00
Says the polling firm: Most voters continue to prefer a more hands-off government in return for lower taxes. A new  Reports national telephone survey finds that 64% of Likely U.S. Voters prefer a government with fewer services and lower taxes over one with more services and higher taxes. That’s unchanged from last month and consistent with findings in regular surveys since late 2006. Just 25% prefer a government with more services. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure which size government they prefer. (To see survey question wording, click here.) So does anyone still think Obama would lose to a real conservative, assuming the GOP had the actual courage to run one in a Presidential race? How this will play in a race between socialist and liberal lite, remains a question, however.

Are these deductible on fed/state taxes?
2012-03-31 22:17:00
Just wondering... can we deduct the cost of our cell phones and monthly cell phone bills if we are a landlord? We also have 2 properties in TX with a very reliable & responsible (I know she's the exception to the rule) property manager in place. We also use the cells for other calls as well. Last year, I was able to deduct the cost of the cells/monthly costs for another business I had that we closed earlier this year, so the question never came up about the property stuff. I'd call our tax person about this but they're overwhelmed so I thought someone here might know. Thanks from Cali.

If You Own Dividend Stocks and Are Worried About Taxes, Then Read This?
2012-03-12 13:30:00
I recently shared an important piece of news with readers of my High-Yield Investing newsletter that I think every dividend investor should know about. Last month, President Barack Obama tabled his $3.8 trillion budget for the 2013 fiscal year starting this October 1. The budget proposes $1.7 trillion in new revenue over the next 10 years, in part by ending Bush-era tax cuts for "wealthy" individuals making more than $200,000 in income and households earning more than $250,000 a year.   That's nothing new. In a recent article, I talked about what Obama was proposing when tax cuts approved under George W. Bush expire at the end of this year.   What is new, however, is that for . . . → Read More: If You Own Dividend Stocks and Are Worried About Taxes, Then Read This…

Why GM Wants You to Pay More Taxes at the Pump
2011-10-23 03:00:00
Editor's note: This article originally appeared on our sister website, InvestingAnswers.com. Back in early June, the CEO of GM (NYSE: GM) suggested the United States should hike gasoline taxes by $1 a gallon. Predictably, conservatives and liberals alike were infuriated by the suggestion. For conservatives, such a large tax hike would be seen as just another government grab for workers' hard-earned dollars. Liberals felt that sharply-increased gasoline taxes would hit the poor the hardest, not only because it would take a larger bite of their already limited discretionary income, but also because the poor are the ones least likely to be driving late model fuel-efficient cars. So what was GM's CEO thinking?   Higher gas . . . → Read More: Why GM Wants You to Pay More Taxes at the Pump

DuPage County property values down, taxes up

Think again. According to this Daily Herald article, the average tax rate for DuPage County's 372 taxing bodies (schools, municipalities, park districts, etc.) increased by 11.6% as a result of increased spending. The increased spending will translate to a 5.7% increase on the average real estate tax bill, despite the fact that the total value of DuPage properties decreased by 5.9% - the first drop in 40 years. If you're buying a home in DuPage, budget an...

Rep. Peter Roskam: High Taxes Have Consequences
2011-03-31 16:00:00
-By Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam, GOP Chief Deputy Whip Note: Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman will testify before the Ways & Means Trade Subcommittee today. Illinois and other states have recently made headlines for their declining populations. Whether they realize it or not, what states like Illinois are learning the hard way is that over-taxing and over-regulating has consequences. And Illinois is now learning that one painful consequence is job loss. Caterpillar, a Fortune 500 company that employs 23,000 workers in Illinois, currently finds itself dealing with a new tax increase in an already over-taxed state. Their CEO, Doug Oberhelman, sent a warning shot on March 21st with a letter to Illinois' new Democrat Governor Pat Quinn:...

Now THERE'S Chutzpah: Obama Claims He hasn't Raised Taxes?
2011-02-08 18:30:00
-By Warner Todd Huston John Kartch over at Americans for Tax Reform found President Obama's claim that he hasn't raised taxes a bit, shall we say, quixotic. At one point in the interview with Obama conducted by Fox News' Bill O'Reilly and shown on Sunday, Obama stated bald faced that he didn't do so. The truth seems to be a different animal, however. Employing his best preacher's alliterative mode by repeating it twice, Obama told O'Reilly, "I didn't raise taxes once. I lowered taxes over the last two years. I lowered taxes for the last two years." But did he hold the line on taxes? Kartch shows that Obama's claim does not hold water. In fact, "just sixteen days into...

Illinois: Death by Taxes

-By Dan Proft During the Illinois General Assembly's lame duck session, Democrat leaders have moved to abolish the death penalty at the same time as signing the economic death warrant for state's economy. In Illinois, it is law-abiding, working families who have been condemned. Despite lllinois' leading exports being its residents and businesses, the General Assembly has proposed raising the state income and corporate income taxes by 75% each. If this tax monster passes, at least two things are certain: one, Illinois businesses would pay the highest corporate income taxes in the free world; two, Illinois would see the largest mass exodus of productive people since the Israelites fled Egypt....
