Death and taxes
2009-10-21 02:35:00
Amazing! The value of homes and commercial real estate has plummeted but the value of the property for "assessment purposes" continues to rise. The explanation is here. Sort of. Maybe one of you can explain it. Aside from property assessments that continue to rise, local government taxes are certain, some as much as 5 percent. Ain't it grand. Everyone else is cutting back; government continues to grow....
Death, Taxes & Closer Turnover: Jenks is done
2009-09-23 18:12:00
A couple quick closer notes before I lock myself in a convention hall for the rest of the day... White Sox close Bobby Jenks will be shut down with a calf injury.  Time to grab Matt Thornton and his 80 K's in 67 IP.  David Aardsma is suffering from a bit of stiffness in his back.  Mark Lowe was used in his place.  Lowe is not as good an option as Thornton and may not see many more chances if Aardsma's back feels better, but for those desperate for that extra save... Houston Street will get his closers role back.  Thank you Franklin Morales for the solid fill in work. Non-closer news: Disregard my match-up of Freddy Sanchez for Thursday, his knee injury is going to keep him out a bit longer.

Estimated Taxes ? Who, When, and How Much

New taxes to support churches and parochial schools take effect today
2009-09-01 08:10:00
A series of new State taxes to support houses of worship, parochial schools and religious ministries go into effect today (Tuesday, September 1, 2009). Saint Martin de Porres Roman Catholic Church, 5112 West Washington Boulevard, Chicago, where State Representative LaShawn Ford is on the Finance Council. A provision on page 342 of the Capital Bill, at Article 10, Section 1805, forces taxpayers to donate $140,000 to Representative Ford's church for "general infrastructure." These unconstitutional taxes are part of the legislative package surrounding the 996-page Capital Bill, which was sponsored by Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Michael Madigan. The new tax revenue will not be distributed equally to all churches, religious schools and ministries.  Rather, the General Assembly has designated a preference for...
Not Every Short Sale Seller Pays Taxes on Canceled Debt
2009-08-31 07:00:00
An average short sale seller may not really understand the tax consequences that may occur over the issue of canceled debt in a short sale. All sellers who are contemplating a short sale should get legal advice, but equally as important is to receive tax advice from a qualified and competent tax adviser. It's possible that certain types of canceled debt may trigger tax liabilities on a short sale. The law is complex. In particular, the possible ramifications of hard-money loans such as equity loans or cash-out refis should be discussed beforehand with a tax accountant. If the seller did not use that money to improve the home, it's possible that the seller may owe taxes when all is said and done . . . read more about canceled debt. Business Taxes In China. Feels Just Like Home.
2009-08-18 02:18:00
Ernst & Young is out with a very informative online publication on indirect taxes in China (h/t All Roads). The publication is entitled, "Navigating Chinese Indirect Taxes," and it provides a great overview of these taxes and how they can, and almost certainly will, impact your China business. It starts out with the following general comments regarding indirect taxes in China: Indirect taxes (specifically Value Added Tax, business tax, customs duty and consumption tax) play an important role in China, accounting for almost 60% of the government’s tax revenue. Newly revised regulations are changing how indirect taxes are treated in China. But these are often the forgotten tax on business. Tax directors may overlook these costs as they are above the line and usually not directly visible within the accounts or financial statements. We are often surprised to learn that many companies have yet to grasp the significance of the indirect taxes passing through the organization. More of...
The Assessor's office on property taxes
2009-07-22 03:28:00
Yesterday I spoke with Eric Herman from the Cook County Assessor's office about what first time homebuyers should know about paying taxes. While property taxes change every year, the value of your home is assessed by his office once every three years. The value is generally determined by the selling price of similar homes in your neigborhood. But the assessment is only part of the equation of your property taxes as a whole. The assessment is multiplied by a local tax rate determined by government taxing bodies in the area. The majority of your taxes, Eric says, go to the school district. When you receive your tax bill, you'll get a breakdown of where each dollar amount went, whether its...
What's your home worth and how much should you pay in taxes?
2009-07-17 05:22:00
The value of a home is often in the eye of the beholder, but the inconsistency of home valuation is starting to cause problems when determining what price to list a house at and how much it shoud cost in taxes, says Don Yosef Marcus. Marcus is a Realtor for Century 21 MB, which has offices in Northbrook and Chicago. He also spent more than six years working for the Cook County Assessor's Office. "You can't really go to any website and accurately determine the value of a home, because most of the time the last time it was sold was '06 or '07, when valuations were much higher," Marcus says. In Cook County, the assessor determines the value of your home for tax purposes once every three years. The valuation is based on the sale price...

Fees Charged for Using Credit Cards to Pay Taxes are Deductible

Can You Pay Federal Taxes with Credit Cards?
2009-04-08 17:18:00
The answer is Yes. The question isn’t really whether you can use plastics to pay taxes or not, but rather whether paying taxes with credit cards is worth it or not. How Much Does It Cost to Pay Taxes by Credit Cards? The IRS has two authorized partners which provide the convenience service of letting taxpayers pay taxes by credit cards. One is Official Payments and the other is Link2Gov. You can a major credit card, such as MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express, to pay federal and state income taxes (Link2Gov only allows you to pay New York, North Dakota, Kentucky, Alabama, Kansas state taxes while Official Payments have all states available). However, as you can imagine, the service is not free. Both of them charge a convenient fee of 2.49% of the total payment with the minimum of $1. Unlike other retailers who pay the credit card transaction fees when customers use credit cards to make a payment, the government will not pay the fee, so eventually it comes down to ...

AIG Is Suing The Government Over $306 Million In Taxes
2009-03-03 04:50:00
Considering the government has just gave them another 30 billion I think they should shut up. This is so absurd. In the midst of its negotiation with the federal government over revised terms of its bailout, American International Group Inc. sued the U.S. on Friday over a disputed $306 million in taxes, interest and penalties. The suit steps up a battle with the Internal Revenue Service largely over AIG's use of a controversial type of "tax arbitrage" transaction that authorities are challenging across the world. With the company essentially suing its owner, the suit ...SOURCE
Taxes Returned and Car Paid Off
2009-02-27 13:53:00
I got my federal and state tax returns today. This is my first year being taxed for my full salary plus a substantial amount for tutoring. Now that I know that I'm paying too much each month I'll be adjusting my withholding to get a little closer to even. While it is fun to get a tax return, I now fully trust myself to use the money wisely throughout the year. I don't need forced savings or to give the government an interest free loan. Since my credit cards were paid off earlier this month, I will be putting this money towards paying off my car. And that's it, the car will be paid in full. It feels really good to start knocking off these obligations. Have you gotten your returns back? How did you use the money?
Obama to Raise Taxes?

Life, Love, Heartache, and Taxes.

People, the blues is about life, love, heartache, and sometimes taxes. It is real stuff, it is the life of people that we know and love. The new administration would probably concur with my assessment, but that is a different story. Consider the sad case of our beloved blues singer Koko Taylor. She recently lost her case against the IRS. I'm very sad to have to report this, but Forbes.com has an online article titled More Tax Blues For Koko Taylor that provides the details.According to the article;Grammy-winning blues singer Koko Taylor has lost her unusual lawsuit seeking to force the Internal Revenue Service to scale back its efforts to collect upward of $400,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest from her, some dating to 1998.Koko Taylor @SqueezeMyLemon

Further Thoughts on Presidential Appointements And Taxes
2009-02-04 17:06:00
First off, you’ll pardon me if I don’t shed any tears over Tom Daschle. Hopefully, he’ll be staying gone for good this time, though I doubt that’ll happen.  He’s too deep in the councils of the Democrats to stay gone for very long. Even in the unlikely event Daschle is out of the picture totally,  don’t be thinking that Government healthcare is hobbled , either. Obama will simply find someone else to head the push. Howard Dean comes to mind, his record of being an incompetent boob not withstanding. Seems something of a job requirement, anymore, anyway. Only after he withdrew his name.(Apparently at the request of the Obama White House) did we discover that the limo and driver and the taxes involved with that, were not the only problem as regards taxes and Daschle’s lobby efforts. Turns out he’d been flying on private jets, as well. That’s a grade one crime in the world of the leftist, unless you happen to be flying into ...

Treasury nominee says he failed to pay taxes

Treasury nominee says he failed to pay taxes WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama’s choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the economic rescue effort disclosed publicly Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004, a last-minute complication in an otherwise smooth path to confirmation. Timothy Geithner paid most of the past-due taxes days before Obama announced his nomination in November, according to materials released by the Senate Finance Committee. He had paid the remainder of the taxes in 2006, after the IRS sent him a bill. The still-unpaid taxes were discovered by Obama’s transition team while investigating Geithner’s background. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus said he still hoped Geithner could be confirmed on Inauguration Day. Obama’s staff told senators about Geithner’s tax issues Dec. 5. “These errors were not intentional; they were honest mistakes,” Baucus said after he and othe...
Geithner Didn’t Pay Taxes
2009-01-14 01:09:00
WASHINGTON –(AP)- (Timothy Geithner)… President-elect Barack Obama’s choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the nation’s economic rescue disclosed publicly Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004, a last-minute complication that Senate Democrats tried to brush aside as a minor bump on an otherwise smooth path to confirmation. Minor bump? He failed to pay self-employment taxes for money he earned while working for IMF from 2001 to 2003, according to materials released by the Senate committee. In 2006, the IRS notified him that he owed $14,847 in self-employment taxes and $2,383 in interest from 2003 and 2004, which he paid after an audit. The IRS waived penalties for those tax years. Transition officials discovered last fall that Geithner also had not paid the taxes in 2001 or 2002. He paid $25,970 in back taxes and interest for those years several days before Obama announced his choice, the committee documents showed. So the outs...

What Will Obama Do With Capital Gains Taxes?
2008-12-18 00:43:00
Dow Jones Newswire reports that President-elect Obama's plans include:Exempting seniors earning less than $50,000 from income tax.Increase the top two marginal tax rates from their current levels of 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent, respectively. Based on 2009 income thresholds, that would result in a tax increase on singles making $171,550 or more and married couples making $208,850 or more.Taxpayers in those brackets also face increased taxes because President-elect Obama plans to restore phase-outs of personal exemptions and itemized deductions. This means that high-earners would not only face higher tax rates, but they would also lose some or all of their personal exemptions and itemized deductions.Obama has also proposed raising the tax rate on capital gains income from 15 percent to 20 percent for single taxpayers making more than $200,000 and for married couples earning more than $250,000 annually.Of course, nothing is set in stone yet and some of the...

The irony of the day must be that Blagojevich ran on an anti-corruption platform. Joyner over at OTB, by way of a WaPo article, points out that Blago was threatening the Tribune, too.
