JAY-Z ON JEOPARDY ANSWER
2012-05-04 18:44:00
Yesterday's airing of Teen Jeopardy asked a milestone Hip-Hop question only to receive an unfortunately incorrect answer. The board (and Alex Trebek) asked, "This Roc-A-Fella introduced us to a Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)" to which one of the contestants responded with "LMFAO." Okay so maybe he was thinking of LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem, but that answer still deserves an adamant WTF? Someone cue the Annie theme song for this kid please!

The Fall of Smart TV: Why It is Disappearing Off The Television Landscape?
2012-04-26 23:02:00
The past decade of television has offered some of the best shows to ever grace the celluloid small screen.  Critics and fans agree that shows like LOST, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, DEXTER, 24, THE WEST WING, HOUSE, DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SHIELD were among this “golden renaissance†era; and they paved the way for shows like THE GOOD WIFE, BREAKING BAD, MAD MEN, DAMAGES, JUSTIFIED, HOMELAND, LUTHER, SONS OF ANARCHY, SHERLOCK, and DOWNTON ABBEY.  These are just a few of the multitude of extraordinary shows that sprang up in this creative climate when studios and television viewers were willing to embrace shows that were a little more cutting-edge and outside-the-box than television of years past.   However, that “hey day†seems to be slipping away.  It is getting harder and harder to get television audiences to checkout and stick with television shows that are considered “thinking†shows. Back at the height of their popularity shows like HOUSE and...
MTV2 HIP-HOP SQUARES
2012-04-24 22:00:00
MTV2 pulls out all the stops for its latest original production--a Hip-Hop-based game show reminiscent of the original Hollywood Squares. Bursting at the seams with talent and hosted by New York City radio's own Peter Rosenberg, is the mighty Hip-Hop Squares. Straight from the dungeons of rap? Yea, something like that.

WHAT IF KIDS NARRATED NATURE?
2012-04-24 15:19:00
BBC America had a little fun this past weekend by airing a children's "audition" spot for their Planet Earth nature series. The premise was to have kids (ages 4-7) narrate the scenes instead of the usual voice of David Attenborough. The result? A hilarious and adorable spoof where cheeseburgers and quirkiness become more interesting tangents than the actual script. Too adorable!

In fact, as a huge recent achievement, Cody’s musical score was just selected as the theme music for the NBC Sports Major League Soccer.  Creating and writing music has opened the door wide open for so many opportunities for Cody and he candidly shared how he found his way into his wondrous world.   As you were recently invited to score the theme music for NBC Sports Major League Soccer, maybe you can share what’s the story behind getting such a cool opportunity? Television Composer Kim Planert Talks the Magic of Composing Music for MISS
2012-03-22 23:40:00
As fans of CASTLE can attest, the intro music sets the tone of the show; it is a jaunty, friendly mix that welcomes viewers to each episode. It’s a fabulous piece composed by Kim Planert’s writing partner Robert Duncan, for which Rob received an Emmy nomination for Best Original Dramatic Score. Similarly, for the new show MISSING, for which Kim and Robert co-compose, the music back-dropping each episode unconsciously informs the audience whether a scene is more sinister, dramatic or light-hearted. Music is frequently the one thing the audience overlooks as they sit back and watch their favorite TV shows; but without it, each show would have a harder time luring viewers into the mood it seeks to create – whether it is to heighten the suspense, draw out a long-awaited romantic moment, or startle the viewer into jumping at the right moment as a big surprise is revealed. Composing music for television is an art form and fortunately in recent years it has gained more ...

The Collapse of Primetime Television: Where Are Television Shows Going Wron
2012-02-23 15:19:00
February is a make-it-or-break-it month for a lot of television shows.  It is a sweeps month where ratings for all television show are vital to determine the longevity of any show.  Sweeps occur in November to test the viability of new and returning shows; then in February, to test new mid-season shows and again check the pulse of existing shows; and in May, to show advertisers and networks that they are getting their money’s worth and demonstrate that there is an existing audience willing to come back the following Fall after the usual 3-4 month hiatus.    The average viewer has no real awareness of “sweeps†months — other than it guarantees some really cool guest appearances, big stunt episodes and a possible heads-up that there may be a hiatus period afterwards in which television shows are M.I.A. as they play catch-up.   This February, however, has been a blood-bath for most TV shows, new and existing alike.  This is typically the time of year when viewership i...
Is It Wrong to Cheer Cheating on Television?
2012-02-17 18:41:00
From THE GOOD WIFE to ONCE UPON A TIME we are seeing a renaissance of cheating.  Dare we speculate that “cheating†is being seen as an accepted form of relationships in modern day television?  And the real question becomes: but should it be?   Unexplained phone calls, illicit meetings and furtive glances can only mean one thing: somebody’s cheating.  When it debuted, THE GOOD WIFE was a scathing admonishment of cheating husbands everywhere.   We felt the betrayal and anger in every fiber of Alicia Florrick’s being as she steeled herself against her inner broken-heart and tried to recover from the one thing a woman can never forgive:  a cheating husband.  In her case, her husband did not just have one affair or even a fling, he was a flagrant cheater, who met with prostitutes and slept with co-workers.  He had not just ignored his wedding vow of fidelity; he acted like sex as currency in his profession was accepted.  The show was a rallying cry for scorned women...

The Top 10 Television Shows of 2011 (A Second Opinion)
2011-12-29 22:24:00
With the vast array of astoundingly good TV shows currently airing across the television landscape, it is incredibly hard to point a mere Top 10.   In an effort to single out what I thought reached the Top 10 for 2011, the following are 10 shows that excelled in writing, casting, characters, cinematography, direction, production and publicity.  Interestingly, 4 out of 10 of the shows are British TV shows, which just goes to show that America cannot claim exclusively to be the “best of the best.†  DOCTOR WHO  First and foremost, DOCTOR WHO takes the top crown.  No matter what other critics say, it is a remarkable achievement for any TV show to continue to enthral viewers after 48 years – of which it aired over 33 televised seasons in more than 50 countries around the globe.  The genius in recasting the lead character every couple of years adds to the renewed interest in fans and the writers in creating new stories; but, by far, the current broadcast run under the helm ...

What the Success of Louis CK Might Mean for the Future of Television

Our second thought — after eagerly handing over our $5 to CK via a hassle free payment system and enjoying his unique brand of self-deprecating and hilarious humor was — could this business model work for the rest of Hollywood?   It’s a question we’ve actually been pondering for quite some time when we weren’t otherwise occupied scanning our Twitter feed for increasingly painful-to-read tweets from the clearly disheartened creators of COMMUNITY (@danharmon) and COUGAR TOWN (@vdoozer). Both of whom who have been forced to helplessly standby as their respective Broadcast Networks quietly begin to withdraw their support for their critically acclaimed albeit ratings anemic shows under the very watchful eye of new lea...
Are You Tired of Twitter Spoiling Television? Will You Join in Our Crusade?
2011-12-06 00:15:00
The TV Addict has had it up to here with Twitter spoilers! For the second consecutive week in a row, an inconsiderate Twitterer (Tweeter?) has needlessly spoiled a piece of entertainment that we hadn’t yet gotten around to watching. Which naturally got us thinking: Wouldn’t it be nice if there was some sort of agreed upon Twitter etiquette (or “Twitterquette”) when it came to TV spoilers? You know, a universal unspoken gentleman’s agreement between TV Twitterati as to how one might wish to conduct themselves as a courtesy to others. We sure as heck think so. Which is why we took a few moments to scribble down four friendly guidelines that if followed, would go a long way into helping contribute to making Twitter a better place for all involved. See for yourself, after the jump. Guideline #1: As a TV Addict who loves nothing more then to encourage folks to watch television live in a last ditch effort to support the Networks’ prehistoric business m...

Warning: iPad Ownership May Be Detrimental to Your Television Viewing Habit
2011-11-08 21:58:00
Are you one of the millions of people who have an Apple iPad at or near the top of their wish list this Holiday season? Allow us to offer up a little unsolicited advice from personal experience: The iPad is the worst thing to happen to our television viewing habits since the proliferation of reality TV. This undeniable fact is something that occurred to us thanks to a recent trip to New York Comic Con that found us absolutely transfixed during a screening of an episode of PERSON OF INTEREST. And while the show’s set-up — which more and more continues to play out like a televised version of The Dark Night courtesy of the monotone heroics of one John Reese (Jim Caviezel), his trusty sidekick Finch (Michael Emerson) and an increasingly colorful collection of cops and robbers probably had a little something to do with capturing our imagination — what really got us was what didn’t. Which is to say, completely devoid of access to WiFi and/or cell reception, the cavernous ...
The Intangibles Killing Television
2011-11-07 15:33:00
In today’s television climate, it is nearly impossible to predict what kind of show will be a hit and which will just miss the mark and fade into oblivion.  Shows with sterling pedigrees, all-star casts, brilliant writing and some with double the money of other shows are still unable to reach their audience.  Lots of fingers are pointed when shows that are supposed to be “guaranteed” successes don’t succeed.  But even with all the right ingredients, there are certain intangibles that networks and studios are refusing to recognize as significant contributors to why shows today are not making it. In an effort to illuminate the intangibles having such negative effects on television shows, I have identified a dozen categories that need to be considered. Too Broke One thing that TV executives always shudder to consider is the economic reality of the times we live in.  People are being forced to cut back on certain frivolous expenditures, and television is one...

Will Twitter on golf television remove the "social" from the media?
2011-10-27 20:58:00
A Twitter feed will share TV screen space with Nationwide Tour golfers this weekend as Golf Channel features writers offering analysis alongside of already long-winded commentary. Do I really need on-screen "captions" telling me what I'm already watching? Is Golf Channel removing the "social" from the media?   You can see what Golf Channel intends to do here but the screen caption does not give me faith in their new "Social Media Saturday". The comment by Rex Hoggard says it all, "Watching JJ Killeen roll up his pants could be an amazing shot from the water." He follows up with, "Hope everyone is watching on the Golf Channel." Oh boy, if this is what golf fans are in for, this golf TV network just took two steps backward!   First, I can see that Killeen is in the water and am excited to watch the shot. Second, I do not need the Golf Channel to place its ad directly in front of me as I'm watching this amazing shot. I hope the commentary is both humorous and ent...
