Sometimes I think about things too much, and other times too little. The secret to success in life, I expect, is knowing when to do one or the other, when to think about things a lot, and when to think about things a little.I think I've got it all reversed because I spend a lot of time thinking about things like social interactions on the drive in to work and in the parking garage, and very little time thinking about things like the color of the suit I just bought or whether it's a good idea to turn the car off there in the parking lot instead of leaving the car on until it gets to where it needs to be.I've got to try to reverse that, I think, or I'll end up... wherever it is that people who spend too much time thinking about the wrong kinds of things and not enough time thinking about the right kinds of things end up. Then again, maybe that's already happened; maybe where I am right now is the end product of 40 years of not thinking enough about some things (like career choi...

Tesla Roadster Gets Powertrain Update
2008-05-29 17:33:00
JB Straubel over at Tesla Motors have provided an update on the "Touch" blog about the new, enhanced Powertrain 1.5 for the Tesla Roadster. It seems that the very talented engineers working at Tesla have managed to improve the Powertrain in just about every possible way, and along the way reduced the weight and complexity of the system while improving torque and efficiency! If you haven't seen it, the Tesla Roadster is about the coolest looking, highest-performance electric vehicle out there. The Roadster is an all-electric vehicle with the performance and styling of a top-of-the-line sports car, but it doesn't use any fuel. The car has a 0-to-60 time of under 4 seconds and , with the new powertrain, a quarter-mile time in the 12.9 second range. Sure, the Roadster will set you back a cool hundred grand, but that's not out of line with other top-performance cars. And when their WhiteStar sedan comes out (probably in 2010 or 2011) with a price tag in the $50-65,000 range, I e...

Fisker fights back in Tesla lawsuit
2008-05-15 18:35:00
Fisker fights back in Tesla lawsuit Fisker Coachbuild is fighting back a lawsuit brought against it by Tesla as the Henrik Fisker-run company has asked a California court for arbitration. The request was filed on Tuesday, May 13, with a hearing scheduled for June 11. Tesla filed its lawsuit against Fisker on April 14. In the suit, Tesla claims that Fisker stole trade secrets and designed an inferior product. Tesla hired Fisker to design its WhiteStar sedan, but says Fisker left them with a sub-par design — especially when compared to the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sedan. Fisker denies the allegations, even calling it "a ridiculous suit," according to Automotive News. In other Fisker news, the automaker says that its Karma sedan is on schedule for production — as evidenced by the latest spy shots. Fisker has taken 500 pre-orders for the plug-in hybrid and is preparing to unveil the car's production interior at November's Los Angeles Auto Show.
AutoblogGreen pays a visit to the new Tesla Motors store
2008-05-12 03:53:00
Tell me you wouldn't have tried the same thing? I found myself in Los Angeles for a quick visit late last week and realized I wasn't too far from the brand new Tesla Motors store. Having read about the opening night gala event and curious about the chic new sales space, I wanted to go check it out. Trouble was, I wasn't close enough to walk, didn't have a car, and have heard too many bad things about LA's public transportation system to see if it was a feasible option for me. Luckily, I met up with Shannon Arvizu (TriplePundit) and she offered to drive the two of us down to the store to take a look at what they've got on display. Didn't take me long to say, "yes." I mean, even if there are have been problems with the development of the car and we're hearing rumblings about ego conflicts among some of the well-knowns who are involved, someone still needs to go and bring back a collection of photos for faithful readers, right? Right. We headed down to Santa Monica Boulevard an...

Judging the Tesla Roadster and Chevy Volt by different standards
2008-05-09 15:27:00
There has long been an interesting paradox in the realm of cars. For some peculiar reason, people who buy really expensive cars are willing to make more compromises to the foibles of the car and cut them more slack. How else to explain grief that owners of Italian exotics withstood for decades in terms of reliability, ergonomics and build quality. Buyers of mainstream cars that often have far fewer problems as a percentage of the number of vehicles built have a fit at every little thing that goes wrong. That same paradox exists today. The Tesla Roadster by virtue of its price and performance falls into entry level of exotic cars. Despite numerous delays in getting the car into production, and obvious compromised in terms of its functionality, most people have been willing to cut the car and the company a lot of slack, myself included. In my case my experience in the auto industry allows me to understand the difficulty of the task Tesla had. I never actually expected them to meet the...

Magna files lawsuit against Tesla Motors
2008-04-17 06:44:00
Magna files lawsuit against Tesla Motors Just yesterday we reported that Tesla Motors has filed a lawsuit against Fisker Coachbuild, but now comes word that Tesla could be in some legal trouble of its own. Magna — a transmission maker — has filed a suit against Tesla for money it says the electric carmaker still owes it. During the development of the electric Roadster, Tesla ran into some development problems with the car's transmission. The car was originally slated to get a two-speed unit supplied by X-Trac, but that unit had durability issues so Tesla turned to Magna. Tesla subsequently decided not to use the Magna unit and developed its own before eventually deciding on a single speed unit (ultimately the car's electric motor had to be altered). According to AutoblogGreen, Magna isn't upset that Tesla decided not to go with its design, but rather that Tesla never paid them fully for its work — $5.6 million in all.
Tesla now on the receiving end of a lawsuit, Magna sues for breach of contr
2008-04-16 02:08:00
By now we are all aware of the sad saga of Tesla Motors and their quest for a reliable two-speed transmission for the battery powered Roadster. After failing to get the necessary durability from the original gearbox supplied by X-Trac, Tesla turned to Magna to try and create a new unit. That obviously didn't work out any better, so they tried to design their own before giving up and revising the motor instead and going to a single speed transmission. Unfortunately Magna apparently didn't take the break-up well and has now resorted to courts for redress. According to Magna Powertrain's suit against Tesla, they didn't get the money they were owed for the design and development work they did. Interestingly, Magna is claiming that they suggested to Tesla as far back as September 2006 that they should go with a single speed unit, but that path wasn't followed at the time. The suit claims that Tesla had Magna stop work in October 2007 and the Canadian company isn't taking issue with...
Tesla Motors files lawsuit against Fisker Coachbuild
2008-04-15 22:01:00
Tesla Motors files lawsuit against Fisker Coachbuild It was revealed on Tuesday that Tesla Motors has filed suit against rival electric carmaker Fisker Coachbuild and two of its employees — including Fisker head Henrik Fisker. The lawsuit claims that Fisker stole design and trade secrets from Tesla. According to the New York Times, Tesla hired Henrik Fisker and Fisker Coachbuild's COO, Bernhard Koehler, to help design the company's upcoming WhiteStar electric sedan — a contract worth $875,000. But, according to Tesla, Fisker and Koehler designed an inferior product and stole many of Tesla's technical details. Since working with Tesla, Fisker has taken the wraps off its own range-extending hybrid vehicle dubbed the Karma. Tesla says that Fisker not only stole the car's hybrid technology from them, but also gave them a poor design so that the WhiteStar sedan wouldn't be able to compete with the Karma. Tesla has since started from scratch with a...
