2009-08-31 14:07:00 When I was a kid, I remember being in my best friend’s kitchen as he suckled a bottle of Tabasco sauce for sheer pleasure. I assumed he could inherently handle it because he was Asian, and I wasn’t. A farang`s life story - Pattaya, Thailand
2009-04-04 15:12:00 Jump to the full entry & travel map Pattaya, ThailandPattaya, 18-01-2009.I look down on the perfect half moon of Pattaya's boulevard from the hill that houses the Wat Kho Phra Bath - Wat means temple in Thai. Down below a heavy cocktail of farang high testosterone and hormone levels rule the veins and arteries inside white fleshy bodies dressed in colorfull Hawaii shorts, mostly belonging to middle-aged western men whose ruddy faces carry a constant grin of happiness due no doubt to the petite hard-bodied local ladyfriends holding their huge hairy hands, often not even half their age.Indian tailors stop them in sthe street offering exclusive business suits at ridiculous low prices, s*xy bar girls giggling and secretly hoping it was them holding that fat farang hand. Russian tourists with a big thirst for wodka mingle with Saudies dressed in their long white djelebas. Hawkers constantly on the move from the police offer sticky rice with lemon, roasted chick...
The Top 5 Healthy Things I Learned in Thailand

Should Thailand?s dodgy dealers be named and shamed?
2009-03-23 04:05:00 At what point are you supposed to stop being reasonable and make a stand against publishers who fail to pay journalists for commissioned work? This happens too often in Thailand. Every time I speak with journalists working for Thailand-based publications I hear stories about people not being paid, especially in Phuket. Some publishers are just inexcusably ...
Thailand: Tract Left On Murdered Mans Body Warns "Dont Hurt Muslims"
2009-03-08 03:09:00 Suspected insurgents gunned down two brothers and burned their bodies as they rode a motorcycle to sit an exam in Pattani yesterday. The victims were identified as Hirun Sudmas, 36, an assistant village head and local defence volunteer, and his brother Arun Sudmas, 40, who worked as a janitor at a local school. They were scheduled to take an exam at the provincial university in the morning.A five-page leaflet was found at the scene of the killing, warning government officials not to "hurt" the local Muslim population.Meanwhile, a local academic said statistics showed insurgency-related incidents in the Muslim-majority region were on the rise, with the brutality only getting worse.Assoc Prof Srisompob, director of Prince of Songkhla University's Deep South Watch Centre, said the insurgency had become worse since January, in terms of both the frequency and the violence of incidents. He said the attacks were having a psychological impact on residents, many of whom had no hope that the au...
Phitsanulok And Sukhothai, Thailand
2009-02-28 21:50:00 My aim was to spend a few days exploring the lower provinces of the North of Thailand, with Phitsanulok and Sukhothai as the main destinations, and in particular the Sukhothai Historical Park. I eventually chose Phitsanulok as the first place to see, and also decided to go by car. However, from Bangkok, you can also get an air-con bus from the Mor Chit 2 terminal, or take the train from Hua Lamphong railway station. Just as a small side note, I find the trains in Thailand to be very comfortable and exceptionally good value for money. But I do recommend that you book your ticket beforehand. Other stations in the North of Thailand are at Lampang, and, of course, Chiang Mai. You can also fly to Phitsanulok with Thai Airways from Don Meuang airport, and also to Sukhothai with Bangkok Airways from Suvarnabhumi airport. You can check out the flight schedules using a little gem of an Internet application that I recently found at the flightstats.com website called The Road Warrior Tools. Ot...

2009-01-21 07:16:00 The long-awaited iPhone 3G has finally arrived in Thailand, with the third-ranked mobile operator True Move staging a gala launch that drew thousands of people and lots of attention. Apple reportedly negotiated for some time to get the iPhone 3G into Thailand, but with the state of the 3G support there, will it matter in the long run? But despite its potential appeal in the Thai market, the iPhone 3G has raised some interesting questions., The main one being, how many Thai users can actually take full advantage of it’s rich features, due to spotty 3G coverage and…

An Accidental Trip to Thailand
2008-07-21 20:49:00 It was meant to be a side trip to the Philippines where a good friend is doing anthropological research in a traditional Kalinga Valley village. Unfortunately, I let myself get bluffed out by the weather and never made it. My arrival date earlier this month in Manila ended up being the day after a second of two typhoons rolled through the country. Conditions on the newsreel looked pretty tenuous and I opted to disembark at our stop-over in Bangkok rather than risk being stranded in Manila for two weeks. As it turns out, the route north to the village was fine, much to my disappointment.Sooooo, I tried to go to the Philippines and all I got were these stunning photos of Thailand....

Taiwan & Thailand
2008-07-12 17:28:00 I wrote up a quick entry for my last post as I was just about to hop on a plane to go to Taiwan and later Thailand. It seems I have returned from my tropical journey and all I can say is Sydney is damn cold! I really hate the cold, but I don't mind New York or Beijing kind of cold because at least that means 24 hour heating. Shanghai or Sydney cold isn't actually cold enough to have that kind of heating and using the air con non stop is such a waste of energy, and thus I am cold at home as well as cold outside. So I have to say I thoroughly loved my tropical holiday in Taiwan and Thailand. My first stop was Taipei, Taiwan where my family and I stayed for 2 days. We went to the Night Markets on the first night which was a lot of fun. The Night Markets are just roads of small food, clothes and accessories stalls. Bargaining is a must there, but you can't bargain off a lot though since they prices are already quite cheap. I was trying to put on a Taiwanese accent while bargaining but...

News: Expensive Food, Poor Farmer.
2008-06-07 12:35:00 1. The global export food prices have been skyrocketing since months (Post)2. Combined with the raising fuel prices, it has caused - what is called - "A Global Food Crisis", urged by world leaders to be tackled urgently. (Post)3. The crisis has sparked the question if the world can produce enough food to feed itself and how we can find ways to increase crop yields. (Post)Yet, something is wrong with this picture... Take the case of Thailand:1. 3 billion people worldwide rely on rice as a staple food (Source)2. Thailand is one of the world's main rice exporters (Source)3. The price of Thai B grade rice, a widely traded variety, reached $795 per ton in April, an increase of 147 percent from a year earlier. Source)4. And yet, Thai rice farmers are getting a lower price for their produce, because of the highly successful crop this year (Source), urging the Thai government to bring in a subsidy scheme buying up 2.5 million tons of rice at a higher-than-market price. (Source)Do you see t...

Another Coup in Thailand?
2008-06-05 03:11:00 Have you been hearing about the possibility of another coup in Thailand?--the 19th since Thailand first became a democracy in 1932 and just 5 months after the current government came to power. It seems most likely that a coup won't be happening in the near near future. However, there is certainly political turmoil in the Land of Smiles right now.The BBC offers a pretty good synopsis of the current political struggle and the recent history that has caused it to emerge: "Why is Thailand in turmoil again?" However, there are certainly more undercurrents then the BBC is outlining. For the past few weeks I've been reading Thai new sources and maintaining an interest in the political landscape in SE Asia. Now that protests have gained world media attention, I thought it was worth putting up an article. More as this continues to unfold . . .
