Best holiday song heralds CTA Holiday Train; Thanksgiving caption contest
2009-12-14 13:00:00
In case you missed it, Chicago Tribune readers recently named the Snow Angels' "CTA Xmas Train" winner of the New Holiday Classics, 2009, Christmas song contest. (Thanks for the link, thepreacherswife!)That's very fitting, given the CTA Tattler's recent Holiday Train outing. Now I just have to find a place where I can buy the album.CTA Thanksgiving caption contest. I recently ran across a Tribune caption contest for this Scott Stantis cartoon. The winning captions were published last week in the Trib's At Play section, but I couldn't find it on the Web site. But you're all still welcome to craft your own captions....

75093 - Market Trends 2007 to 2009 I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and you're ready for a little real estate chat.  Activity has picked up the past 30 days but everyone wants a deal, a real deal and that usually means price!  So, no surprise, the best price and house get the contracts. That's a take on right now buyers, and believe me, they are taking their time and are being extremely careful. So, how's the market from 2 years ago? I just know that's a burning question... If you're in the market it does help to know the history of the past two years particularly by areas. Let's take a look at 75093 to see what's transpired. A couple months ago the MLS had a significant upgrade and now detailed market information can be tracked  for trends and more accurate comparables for pricing a property, so here you go. Inventory is lighter but not as low as last Dec - Feb. when the world fell apart. The number of sold homes is down 21% - only 10 homes less....
Thanksgiving '09
2009-11-27 22:18:00
Yet again, Tefft was in charge of the Technology Thanksgiving Potluck this year. Last year's theme was Gay Marriage. Not necessarily for or against it, just simply gay marriage in general. Her themes are always very loosely tied to something we might be thankful for, or possibly not thankful for, like the theme two years previous: Pesticides Cause Cancer. This year's theme was New Moon from the Twilight series. Apparently Tefft is a big fan, along with the millions of pre-pubescent teen girls in America.  I wasn't sure what the Twilight series had to do with being thankful for anything, but again, Tefft doesn't really adhere to convention.  Everyone had to draw from a hat (one of Tefft's flamboyant, flappy brimmed sun hats) to determine which team we'd be on. Either Team Jacob or Team Edward.  I asked Tefft to explain the difference. She looked offended that I didn't already know. I explained to her that I was not a 15-year-old girl. She agreed that I wasn...
Happy Thanksgiving from Maui!
2009-11-27 19:49:00
Sitting at the Maui airport, belly full of wine and Thanksgiving dinner, waiting to head back to cold, rainy Chicago. Maui was incredible and my non-traditional Thanksgiving was full of surprises--like a school of dolphins, a whale and a massive sea turtle crashing my snorkeling trip at Black Rock today. I hope your holiday was full of joy (like the Blackhawks' circus trip so far) and maybe even a few surprises (like the Bears' pending upset of the Vikings Sunday???). Just in case the cold, rainy Chicago weather has you down, here are some highlights from my trip to brighten your day. .  ...

All in all, my Thanksgiving holiday wasn't half bad. I mean that literally... only half of it was good. Why am I so much better at regular days than holidays? Anyway... here's the recount of my Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving at the Turkey Trot
2009-11-26 18:56:00
Just back from the Turkey Trot 8K in Lincoln Park, and I thought I'd share photos of some of the unsung heroes who came out for the race---the spectator dogs. About a dozen canines ran the race by my count, but tons were out and part of the audience.  I didn't run this year, either, but was the designated driver for this crazy flock. First, three cheers for the friendly volunteers in this truck who handed out free, hot coffee! The park and the course were a little wet, but the sun came out here and there, too. This two came with their trainers from Sit Means Sit.  This lab had good manners, or maybe it's the harness. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!...

I am thankful for?
2009-11-26 18:26:00
Thanksgiving. Even if it’s only one day a year, it reminds us to think about what we are truly thankful for and appreciate how rich our lives truly are. Soldiers who have and continue to risk their lives to protect my freedom. My parents who are always there for me. No matter what. But still let me ... Thanksgiving Drink: The In-law
2009-11-26 18:15:00
I just wanted to share some Prairie Grass Cafe humor with you on the holiday.  Dan created a drink for today,  it is a shot of Corzo Reposado Tequila and we put lime "caviar" with it.  They  are special Australian finger limes that pop in your mouth. The juice completely contained in the skin so it's the texture that likens it to caviar not the flavor.  Hawaiian Red Sea Salt to start. We are here to make the Thanksgiving Experience as pleasant as possible no matter who is sitting at the table! ...
Thanksgiving, eat what you want without sabotaging your goals
2009-11-26 17:59:00
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!   A few tips to enjoy your Thanksgiving while trying to stay healthy:   1) If you have time get a work-out in now.  Even if it's 20 minutes, it will do your heart some good.  Run outside, strength train with little rest in between your sets or turn on some music and dance around the living with the kids.  Whatever it is just do it.   2) If you're cooking hopefully you were able to pick up fresh veggies for all dishes that require veggies.  The ever so popular green bean casserole tastes great with fresh green beans.    3) Make sure to add lots of greens to your plate.  Filling your plate with salad...
Happy Thanksgiving!

Jay Anderson gives us a history lesson on "The First Thanksgiving":Every gradeschool boy and girl in the U.S. will confidently tell you that their history books say that the very first Thanksgiving on American soil took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621 when the English Pilgrims who had arrived the year before and the Patuxet Indians shared the food from their respective harvests in one great big happy feast. As is often the case, however, the history books are wrong on this account. ...The Maverick Philosopher engages in a thanksgiving reflection:We need spiritual exercises just as we need physical, mental, and moral exercises. A good spiritual exercise, and easy to boot, is daily recollection of just how good one has it, just how rich and full one's life is, just how much is going right despite annoyances and setbacks which for the most part are so petty as not to merit consideration. ...How Private Property Saved the Pilgrims -- When the Pilgrims landed in 1620, they esta...
Mom, Thanksgiving and a fur
2009-11-26 17:54:00
This is our first Thanksgiving without my Mom. To know Betsy was to love Betsy and anyone who knew her feels the void that is left in her absence. She was an amazing woman and an enormous influence on my life, and facing the holidays without her is a daunting task. Thanksgiving was her holiday, too, which just makes it harder. Mom was very creative and she loved anything that offered her the opportunity to express her artistic side. Hosting Thanksgiving was always a great opportunity for her to flaunt her flair (she loved to trot out this huge rooster that would be the centerpiece on the dining room table from Thanksgiving to Christmas -- she had a kooky, playful side and...
Chicago Wolves Thanksgiving Home Stand ,Day 6, Game 3, Win 3!
2009-11-26 17:30:00
The Chicago Wolves did it again, beating the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-2 last night at the Allstate Arena. Perhaps it was the thought of owner Don Levin's traditional American Thanksgiving dinner today at the Drake for players and families that inspired them. At last the Wolves offense seemed to be more energized and organized. Still, as they sleep off that turkey dinner tonight I pray the ghosts of peewee coaches past whisper in their ears, "Get your tush in their goalie's face!" And "Protect your goalie but don't block his view !". Here is a bit of a taste of the game for those who were caught in the holiday traffic.Brett Sterling struggles against the boards on his way to...
Thanksgiving...Means It's Almost Time for Nutcracker
2009-11-26 17:21:00
Next week the Joffrey is traveling to St. Louis, MO to open our 2009 season of Nutcracker at St. Louis' Fox Theater.  The last time we toured to St. Louis we were there with our beloved artistic director and co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet, Gerald Arpino, who has since past away.  It will be bittersweet to be there again and remember what it was like to be on tour with him in that city, but nevertheless, he is never forgotten even as the years go by.  We tour our Nutcracker every year to many different cities, so I can only remember bits and pieces of what it was like in St. Louis.  I remember we stayed in a hotel at...

This Thanksgiving, I'm Thankful For Marian Hossa
2009-11-26 09:34:00
Marian Hossa's Blackhawks debut was nothing short of brilliant. "House" had two goals to help Chicago extend its winning streak to eight games with a 7-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks Wednesday night. With the win, the Hawks improve to 16-5-2 and are just two points behind the Sharks in the race for first place in the Western Conference. Thank you, Marian. Thank you, Hawks. The turkey will taste just a little bit better tomorrow after a win like tonight's! In case you missed it, check out all the highlights from the BIG win!...

Happy Thanksgiving!!
2009-11-26 08:25:00
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. Why, you ask? Well, it's actually quite simple. Let me break it down for you, equation style... Copious amounts of turkey + Artery clogging quantities of stuffing + Mashed potatoes fluffier than a cloud + 4 slices of pumpkin pie + Chowing down on whatever else is on the table + More copious amounts of turkey + More stuffing + A little bit of touch football and a coma-like nap = Best. Day. Ever. And that's why I love Thanksgiving. So go out and enjoy your Thanksgiving day. Spend some quality time with family and friends, watch some football, enjoy your dinner, and be sure to say thanks for the good...

Black Thursday: Depictions of Thanksgiving
2009-11-26 05:34:00
by Jeriah HildwineIt may be a truism that the more a thing is beloved by the majority of the American population, the more it will be disdained by the art world.  This is true of artists:  consider Monet, Rockwell, and of course Thomas Kinkade.  (Bob Ross is somehow too lovable for even the most bitter cynics to dislike; I've never heard anyone breathe an ill word about him.)  Andrew Wyeth is part of this phenomenon as well; serious art people look at his work like the non-art public look at conceptual installations:  curious, but suspicious also that a trick is being played on them, to make them look dumb.  Maybe this, ultimately, is why so many in the art world...
What does Thanksgiving mean to you?

I am thankful for having great friends and family, a roof over my head, and food to eat. The simple things are cherished most.   In 2003, I was diagnosed with seminoma cancer. Doing simple things became challenging during chemotherapy. So now, as a cancer free Garrard, I am grateful for every good thing that comes my way.   What are you thankful for in your life? Thanksgiving? I'll take a pass
2009-11-25 05:22:00
By Scott BolohanRedEye Special ContributorI would describe myself as a pretty festive guy. If there is a holiday, you can bet I'm celebrating it.But I've come to dread Thanksgiving. It's actually one of my least favorite days of the year. It's become a holiday more about stuffing yourself with turkey and The Greatest Shopping Day Ever Eve instead of being thankful for anything, leaving people like me in a tough predicament (and not just because I'm broke)....
McDonald's 76th Thanksgiving Day Parade on State Street is coming, are
2009-11-25 00:22:00
On my way to Commonground's 40 Under 40 event, I met a friend at Macy's and decided to check out some new fragrances. On my way to Macy's at 111 N. State St., all I saw were signs everywhere about this Thanksgiving Day parade coming Thursday, Nov. 26.   The parade is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and it'll include various bands, the McDonald's crew and undisclosed celebrities. The length of the parade will be from Congress Parkway to Randolph Street.   I don't know why I've never stopped through to see this parade even though this is the 76th anniversary parade of McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago. WGN-TV will be broadcasting the parade live. I think I'll...
Seven more Thanksgiving dos and don'ts
2009-11-25 00:01:00
Today's post comes to us courtesy of Kim Z at Post Emily Post (too repetitive?). She reminds us how to keep the peace this Thanksgiving. Enjoy: I love Thanksgiving mostly because I love food. Unfortunately, while the stuff we put into our mouths is part of what makes the day enjoyable, the stuff that comes out of our mouths can make the day really ugly. Keep your gathering civil by following these guidelines for polite conversation:  Don't talk about dieting. If you are trying to stick to a diet over Thanksgiving that's great, but the rest of us gluttonous slobs don't want to hear about it. Take smaller portions. Say "no thank you" to seconds. But going on about health...
Thanksgiving Table Decor- Countdown continues..
2009-11-24 23:56:00

Why not take advantage of the fall bounty this Thanksgiving, rather than using fresh cut flowers, which are clearly out of season here in Chicago. Surviving your Thanksgiving road trip
2009-11-24 06:00:00
"Are we there yet?  Are we there yet?  Mom, ARE WE THERE YET?" seems to be the kids' theme song on long car rides. AAA estimates that 38.4 million Americans will be driving at least 50 miles from home for the Thanksgiving weekend. If you are one of those people, you'll want to plan ahead to keep your children entertained. Keeping our kids entertained with movies and music in the carA spokesperson for AAA says more cars will be on the roads because of the economy, new airline restrictions and additional baggage fees. Our last family road trip was quite an adventure, with four kids under the age of 5 we brought plenty of things to keep them occupied and I was able to...

Thanksgiving eats: Head to Green City, and skip the grocery store lines
2009-11-23 20:00:00
Going to the grocery store the week of Thanksgiving sucks. Not only are there long lines, but half the stuff you're there for is long gone. Rather than fighting someone over the last bag of potatoes or Jiffy cornbread mix, wouldn't it be nice to shop in peace and have a wide variety of fresh foods sold by kind vendors? So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving (which has its roots in the harvest, as opposed to canned cranberry sauce and football), head to Green City Farmers Market on Wednesday (from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for some locally grown holiday fixings. Even if you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, the goods offered at Green City right now are perfect for warm, cozy...

Three Thanksgiving Rules
2009-11-21 14:27:00
Some practical dos and don'ts to keep the peace on Turkey Day: Don't go empty handed. Even if the host has told you to bring "nothing," take a bottle of wine, a six-pack of diet soda, or a $3.99 pie from Jewel. This is a simple - and polite - way of expressing your appreciation for your host's efforts. Avoid political talk. Yes, I know you feel deep convictions about the human rights violations in Transylvania, and Grandpa Fred feels the opposite, but it's not your job to convince him -- even though you're right. If Grandpa (or your bitch of a sister in law) makes a comment that just raises your ire, smile, turn back to the game, and...
