?Just the Facts? Vs the Media?s ?Poetic Truth?
2012-04-06 04:23:00 I once lived under a dictatorship, so we rarely believed what the government run media told us. Because of the censorship of the media, rumors tended to spread wildly and so to find out what was going on, we relied on word of mouth from other missionaries, and every night we listened to the BBC’s ...

2012-03-22 10:18:00 When it was thought it might be a white neo-nazi, they condemned it. Once it was made clear the killer is muslim, the liberals begin their appeasement, using Israel’s SELF-DEFENSE against the daily dose of rockets launched by hajis in Gaza as a justification for the INTENTIONAL killing of Jewish school children. The Toulouse killer ...
The media enemy
2012-02-21 08:31:00 Our problems often come from well-wishing fools rather than enemies. Carter, Clinton, Bush, and even Obama are not enemies, just misinformed friends. A lot of Israeli leftists genuinely love the Jewish state and close their eyes to the unsettling impossibility of living side-by-side with Arabs. American pork-eating, Sabbath-flaunting Jews would love to see a prosperous Israel, but honestly—though negligently—err in supporting concessions to Arabs, which only provoke them to last-ditch fighting. It is understandable that the White House advisors are predominantly leftist: they came not from the real life, but from universities dominated by leftist academics bent on twisting the world according to their models and values (or absence thereof). Less clear is, why are the media mostly leftist? Theoretically, media cater to general population which, we believe, tend to have substantial sense of values and oppose leftist nihilism. The answer is possibly that media are run like all th...

The media's reaction to Whitney Houston's death has also been sad
2012-02-13 14:17:00 I usually write about love and relationships, but the untimely death of Whitney Houston overshadows my opinion of whether or not we should take Valentine’s Day seriously. Last night, the world didn’t stand still, but millions of hearts dropped at the devastating news of the musical legend’s passing. I’m a firm believer that when someone... Read more »

Engineers and the Media
2011-11-15 14:39:00 A recent opinion piece in Design News chastises the media for regularly giving science credit for engineering achievements. In addition, it suggests that the media may tend to associate scientists with technical accomplishments and blame engineers for technical mishaps and disasters. Do you see and
Welcoming Chelsea Clinton to the Media
2011-11-14 22:35:00 Cripes Suzette links this story: Chelsea Clinton to Report for NBC The appointment is immediate. Ms. Clinton will show up at the news division offices on Monday morning, said Steve Capus, president of NBC News, and will begin work on stories that NBC expects to use as part of its “Making a Difference” series, which runs on “NBC Nightly News … Mr. Capus said an intermediary contacted him in July with word that “she was kicking around what she wanted to do next.” Hat tip: Cripes Suzette Reax: She’s probably going to be a big hit at this. I do think with her background and experience that she could provide illumination on many issues that Americans would be interested in. Chemicals in the Media
2011-11-02 13:18:00 Sensationalism in the media has led to a focus on stories that are both unique and extreme. Will Twitter on golf television remove the "social" from the media?
2011-10-27 20:58:00 A Twitter feed will share TV screen space with Nationwide Tour golfers this weekend as Golf Channel features writers offering analysis alongside of already long-winded commentary. Do I really need on-screen "captions" telling me what I'm already watching? Is Golf Channel removing the "social" from the media? You can see what Golf Channel intends to do here but the screen caption does not give me faith in their new "Social Media Saturday". The comment by Rex Hoggard says it all, "Watching JJ Killeen roll up his pants could be an amazing shot from the water." He follows up with, "Hope everyone is watching on the Golf Channel." Oh boy, if this is what golf fans are in for, this golf TV network just took two steps backward! First, I can see that Killeen is in the water and am excited to watch the shot. Second, I do not need the Golf Channel to place its ad directly in front of me as I'm watching this amazing shot. I hope the commentary is both humorous and ent...

The Media Obsession with Models
2010-11-23 23:10:00 A model fainted at a recent photo shoot. Seeing someone so tall, lithe and thin flutter to the ground is kind of like watching a giraffe sway, then collapse. Fortunately we caught her before she hit ground; later she told us that she'd been running late that morning and hadn't had time to eat. As she was helped toward a chair, she passed out. We put pillows under her head and legs, then gave her some juice, part of a muffin and after a brief rest she was back on set. I wish I could say this was a fashion shoot first, but there's a reason most of these models are so unbelievably thin. They don't eat like the rest...

Race reporting this summer: Did the media get it wrong?
2010-08-02 18:38:00 The media's race reporting had major missteps this summer, according to Ari Melber in The Huffington Post. He cites two reasons for these mistakes and gives examples of how it all went wrong. ...
Obama and the Media is Why Palin is so Successful
2010-05-07 18:56:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Americans love to be led by what they feel are ordinary folks. They want to assume that their sons or daughters could become a representative, senator, or even a president. It's a can-do nation filled with folks that feel they are just as good as the next citizen in line. This is why Sarah Palin is so successful. The reason for this goes back even before the American Revolution. Americans built this nation by the sweat of their brows, the brawn of their backs and their God-given abilities, a veritable natural aristocracy among men. They looked to leaders from their own strata and looked askance at any that claimed a noblesse oblige. In fact, it...

2010-04-09 12:48:00 By BOB ANDELMAN I start each show talking about ?So much media, so little time?? But David Mathison sees the media differently. Instead of observing it from afar, he wants you to be the media?you, yourself. Mathison, a former executive with the Reuters news agency, takes the whole notion of 21st century media very seriously. In his new, self-published handbook, Be The Media: How to Create and Accelerate Your Message? Your Way, Mathison lays out how anyone can have a message and spread it using online tools ranging from standbys such as print, radio and video to blogs and podcasts. Forget the so-called media elites, he says?and as one of them I object!?and take control of spreading the word about your own project yourself, whether you?re the producer of music, films, podcasts, radio or television programs. I couldn?t agree more. And I would add that Mathison?s book, which you can order on Amazon.com or his website, BeTheMedia.org, is a perfect companion bookend for Guy Kawasaki?s...

The Point of Social Media Is the Social, Not the Media
2010-01-14 10:52:00 A version of the following entry is cross-posted today on Chicago Carless.Last month on Chicagosphere, I wrote a popular post about how social media helped save a financially struggling local business. Unfortunately, social media wasn't enough to save a popular Oak Park coffee shop. Lido's Caffé, the home of a longstanding coffee klatsch that germinated on Twitter--my coffee klatsch--succumbed to the ailing economy last week. Yet in the shop's failure is a lesson in online community--and how to translate it to real life....

My first question to Jay would have been, "What was so funny on the sidelines after you just threw your 26th interception of the season?" It sounds silly and petty, but that stuff bothers the heck out of me.We'll have plenty more to dissect in the short week leading up to the season finale against the Lions. FIRE LOVIE!!!...

Jay Cutler and Lovie Smith Address the Media after Bengal Beatdown

I guess there's not too much to say when you get completely owned. Cutler actually responded better than I expected. Maybe he's already accepted his fate for this season - to be running for his life. People talked about his lousy record in Denver for a team that had no running game and no defense. I'm just saying. Lovie saying it was a tough day at the office has to be the understatement of the year. If he's not officially on the hot seat already,...

Why cops love the media
2009-08-27 22:10:00 I was driving, listening to the radio, when I heard about a Chicago Police Department officer shooting and killing a knife-wielding man in the Loop this afternoon. The radio station went live to a press conference given by Superintendent Weis. A female reporter asked a question about why the officers shot, and about the danger to passers-by because of police gunfire. I can't recall the exact phrasing, but it pissed me off. The question implied that the reporter who asked it was more concerned about the danger posed to the public by a stray police bullet than she was by the danger posed by a crazed, knife-weilding panhandler roaming the Loop at midday, accosting citizens at random. I'll post more...

Today, RSA is initiating the shutdown process to take down this attack.

As this convergence accelerated, it spurred interconnected developments in the unusual range of disciplines that the Laboratory brought together, including cognition, electronic music, graphic design, video, and holography, as well as work in computation and human-machine interfaces. The Media Lab
