Saida ? A Phoenician Treasure « Pearl in the Middle East
2012-03-19 10:07:00 Saida but ? since that day I?ve to return to it every now and then, every time I?m from new in Lebanon! I just fell in love with this city, which?s old part is directly at the sea, only the road is more near! Here the people live a more simply life than in Beirut. Yet they are so kind and funny, helpful citizens. When you get here, you should never miss to dive into the souk, where you might get set back by it hundreds of years. Yeah, and when you are like me, who is quite sensitive for energy in the air, the magic lying in it, so welcome to the old Saida, which the Phoenician had called Sydwn. via Saida ? Four New Dangers in the Middle East
2012-02-28 15:13:00 Ever since I was born in 1946, the Middle East has been at the core of the most enduring, most vexing, and most economically impactful conflicts on Earth. The region has generated eight major wars, scores of lesser skirmishes, plus a cascade of political assassinations, acts of terror and revolutions. It has triggered at least four global economic upheavals. It has repeatedly caused chaos in the world’s most advanced industrial nations. And now, despite one of the most concerted — and frustrating — multinational peace initiatives ever mounted by the global powers, it is about to do it AGAIN! Israel and Iran are on the brink of an all-out war. Syria is . . . → Read More: Four New Dangers in the Middle East

A Short History of the Middle East
2012-01-03 09:22:00 From a purely American point of view, we have only one ally, Israel, in the Middle East and the Obama administration has treated it like an enemy. Israel has understandably concluded it cannot depend on the U.S. for support. In the midst of the turmoil, Israel is particularly vulnerable and will be until the current ...

Syria, Iran, and the Balance of Power in the Middle East
2011-11-28 19:12:00 Let’s peel our eyes away from the eurozone disaster momentarily and take a look at another crisis – one with just as much potential to impact our global financial system. As we’ve discussed in Outside the Box before, Iran’s trump card is not its nuclear capability but rather its opportune location next to the very narrow, very important Strait of Hormuz … through which no less than 40% of the world’s seaborne oil passes. As the US leaves Iraq, Iran is ready and waiting to fill the void and extend its regional influence. So where’s the next turf war? A shaky Syria, where the Iranian-Saudi-US balance of power will continue to play out. If you haven’t been following the . . . → Read More: Syria, Iran, and the Balance of Power in the Middle East

The Harsh Reality of the Middle East Conflict
2008-05-03 11:22:00 by Dan Lieberman A century old conflict between the state of Israel and stateless Palestinians, many of whom have been disposed from lands that created the Israel state, has provoked an argument: Is it preferable to have two states living side by side or have one state from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River that includes Jews and Palestinians without prejudice and with equal rights for all? Those who propose a single-state do so because they sense the two-state solution is nonviable and those who propose two-states do so because they sense the one-state solution is unacceptable. The argument is doomed to irresolution because Israel has overwhelming military power, faces no countervailing power, doesnÂ’t intend for the Palestinians to have a viable state and wonÂ’t approve a single state for all. If Israel intended to allow a viable Palestinian state, would the Israeli government proceed in the continuous construction of West Bank settlements? W...

Can the U.S. and Iran Share the Middle East?
2008-04-25 09:08:00 by Trita Parsi By negotiating a Shiite truce, Tehran embarrassed Washington last week and arguably proved itself to be a more potent stabiliser of southern Iraq. Iran's role in Iraq came as a sharp reminder that the George W. Bush administration's accusations of Iranian mischief notwithstanding, Iranian influence in Iraq is both undeniable and multifaceted. As Washington starts to come to terms with this reality, the Middle East inches closer to its moment of truth: Is the United States ready to share the region with Iran? As the risk of a U.S.-Iran war is deemed to have dropped in the past few months, in spite of the resignation of Admiral William Fallon and President Bush's designation of Iran as the United States' number one threat, a modicum of optimism for U.S.-Iran relations in 2009 has emerged. The poisonous atmosphere between the Bush and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad administrations has prevented the two countries from exploring areas of common interest. ...
A Mystery in the Middle East
2008-04-09 04:29:00 The Arab-Israeli region of the Middle East is filled with rumors of war. That is about as unusual as the rising of the sun, so normally it would not be worth mentioning. But like the proverbial broken clock that is right twice a day, such rumors occasionally will be true. In this case, we don’t know that they are true, and certainly it’s not the rumors that are driving us. But other things — minor and readily explicable individually — have drawn our attention to the possibility that something is happening. The first thing that drew our attention was a minor, routine matter. Back in February, the United States started purchasing oil for its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). The SPR is a reserve of crude oil stored in underground salt domes. Back in February, it stood at 96.2 percent of capacity, which is pretty full as far as we are concerned. But the U.S. Department of Energy decided to increase its capacity. This move came in spite of record-high oil prices and the fact th...

03.22.08 Tilly and The Wall at the Middle East
2008-03-23 18:54:00 The scene was set. A sold out show the night before Easter in the basement of the Cambridge, MA mainstay. The room was filled to the brim with girls in tube tops and spandex and boys in button down shirts and khakis. From the very first notes of the opening band it was apparent that this crowd was not into shoe gazing, they had attended this show to dance.Though when you hear Tilly and the Wall on CD, you might not think of them as being a "dance" band. But there is something about seeing them on stage that changes all of that.Five kids from Nebraska never seemed to have so much fun in one place at one time as Tilly and the Wall does. When on stage its like watching five best friends have the most fun time ever. Guitarist/vocalist Derek Pressnall hops around the stage like a hyper bunny, which is very fitting for Easter eve. While his wife Jamie Pressnall provides the beat for the band, tap dancing on her miked raised platform. The dueling female vocalists Kianna Alarid and Neel...

"Peace in the Middle East -- An impossibility," quoth Moshe Sharon
2008-02-10 21:18:00 Professor Moshe Sharon has clearly asserted the impossibility of peace in the Middle East. I would amend this to say that under present and foreseeable circumstances peace between the Arabs and Israel is impossible. As Sharon points out the main obstacle to peace is the Arab-Muslim attitude toward non-believers, especially the Jews whom they have oppressed as dhimmis for more than a thousand years. Their religion commands the Arabs/Muslims to make perpetual war against non-Muslim states --with truces allowed when this is for the ultimate benefit of the Muslim war machine, to give it time to rearm and regroup-- until the whole world is brought under the rule of Islam. The name that Muslims give to war for conquering the lands of non-believers [kuffar] is jihad. When non-believers are overwhelmingly militarily superior to the Muslims and are perceived by the Muslims as willing and able and ready to use that military superiority against them, then the Muslims can be very peaceful.Sharo...

2008-02-07 22:40:00 Sad but True Last month, a world-wide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was: 'Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?' The survey was a huge failure because: In Africa they didn't know what 'food' means. In Eastern Europe they didn't know what 'honest' means. In Western Europe they didn't know what 'shortage' means. In China they didn't know what 'opinion' means. In the Middle East they didn't know what 'solution' means. In South America they didn't know what 'please' means. In the USA they didn't know what 'the rest of the world' means.
For the middle east’s access woes, bad things come in 4’s
2008-02-04 15:42:00 For a fourth time in a week, communications with the middle east have been disrupted by a damaged undersea fiber bundle. No ships to blame this time and there was enough redundancy via alternate routes to avoid a a blackout. Internet services in Qatar have been seriously disrupted because of damage to an undersea telecoms cable linking the Gulf state to the UAE, the fourth such incident in less than a week. Qatar Telecom (Qtel) said on Sunday the cable was damaged between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das on Friday. The cause of damage is not yet known, but ArabianBusiness.com has been told unofficially the problem is related to the power system and not the result of a ship’s anchor cutting the cable, as is thought to be the case in the other three incidents. Remaking the Middle East: The New Cold War
2008-01-18 19:26:00 The Neocon dream is for the US to dominate the word. Dubya has damaged beyond repair attempts to influence Central Asia and the Middle East by persuasion and supporting human dignity. Zbigniew Brzezinski advocated such an approach. In his book The Grand Chessboard he explains the foreign policy imperative of first Great Britain, and now the United States to dominate the work through control of Eurasia. Ever since the continents started interacting politically, some five hundred years ago, Eurasia has been the center of world power.- (p. xiii) ... But in the meantime, it is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America. The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book. (p. xiv) In that context, how America 'manages' Eurasia is critical. A power that dominates Eurasia would control two of the world's three most advanced and economically productive region...
