Electric Taxis in Tokyo
2009-09-08 16:23:00 Anyone who's been to Tokyo is immediately struck by two things. First, the living spaces in Japan's capital make the Big Apple's cramped domiciles look like a suite at the Trump Tower, and second, the city is at the cutting edge of technology. So while it's not surprising that the city will

How Its Made : Tokyo Underground Bike Parking
2009-06-24 10:37:00 Readers will remember that I blogged last year about the brilliant underground bike parking system made by the Japanese at Nishi-Kasai Station in Edogawa, Tokyo. I just happened to discover a cool video from Japanese news broadcaster Newsline which details how one of these these automated parking systems, called Eco Cycle, was designed & constructed and the machines which were employed in the process. This really looks to have been a neat little civil engineering project for the developers - Giken Seisakusho Group. A picture of Giken's 'Silent Piling Machine' which takes prefabricated structural piles and presses them into the ground at high pressure without vibration and excessive noise. The Character Yuki 7 is the creation of illustrator Kevin Dart, whose book "Seductive Espionage: The World of Yuki 7" is available for pre-order.I think the trailer works really well in capturing that Modesty Blaise, Golgo 13, Lupin The Third, Avengers, James Bond etc. spy vibe Props to kanYe West : Blog Via: Stephane Coedel - Vimeo Read More tags: animation, faux trailer, retro, spy, trailer

For most of us, our malfunctioning consoles from the 1990s may mean that we are no longer able to enjoy the classic old-school titles of yesteryear. Fortunately, the DS has risen as a platform for us to relive some of these old-school titbits. Sin Tong Kee + EBISU, TOKYO
2009-03-19 10:22:00 Although I haven’t had a chance to spend time in Singapore, I have been to Malaysia which I’ve heard has similar cuisine. As far as Singaporean food goes in Tokyo, it’s slim pickins here. There are several “Asian” restaurants around the Tokyo area that serve up their own variation of chicken rice, but until now, the only one getting it right(well, the one with the best flavor and quality) was Hainan Jeefan Shokudo in Azabu Juban. As much as I love those guys, they really only serve one dish, and from time to time a curry dish. There’s a new contender in town though, Sin Tong Kee of Ebisu. This is one of those restaurants you find through a friend of a friend of a friend of your neighbor. If no one ever told me about this place, I would never have found it. Even funnier is that it’s possibly the easiest restaurant to find! Just follow the train tracks from Ebisu Station’s Atre exit. I’ll get to the directions later though. This is ...

100% Chocolate Cafe + MARUNOUCHI, TOKYO
2009-03-19 07:24:00 If you’ve ever considered the existence of cheese flavored chocolate, or for that matter, condensed milk flavored chocolate, then it’s mandatory to visit the 100% Chocolate Cafe by Tokyo Station. A new foray into the world of fine and exotic chocolates by Meiji Chocolate, maker of chocolate bar standards found in combinis across Japan, 100% Chocolate Cafe is a cafe and a limited line of fine chocolates. The chocolates themselves are, of course, far more elusive than the cafe, which isn’t going anywhere. So rather than scour the food courts and department stores, just go to the cafe to experience all 56 flavors of chocolate(depending on your budget!). There are some amazing flavors like honey, almond praline and royal milk tea. Then there are the odd, more daring flavors like cheese, black pepper, lemon salt and… basil?! My personal favorites are jasmine and lavender. Some of the chocolates, like honey flavor, are very light in taste, the honey flavor itself ...

Bio Cafe + SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2009-01-20 16:24:00 This is not really about their organic fare or their unique tofu inspired deserts. No, this is about their bagels and how they got them right. Any visitor to Tokyo will know that finding a bagel here, a real bagel for that matter, is almost impossible. Every foreign food has to go through a kaleidoscope filter before it can be served to the public here(mayonnaise pizza donut anyone?). Somehow, Bio Cafe in Shibuya has done the unthinkable in Tokyo and produced an authentic bagel! Not only that, there’s a huge variety of them as well, all made with really nice ingredients(back to their organic concept thing). It’s easy to find too, just walk up Spain Zakka over by La Fabrique in Shibuya, it’s just before the stairs that lead up to the crepe shop. Their flavors may sound odd at first, don’t forget, we’re still in Tokyo, try them and you’ll be amazed at how good they are. There are a few types, my favorite being the kind with the chewy outer skin and...

Passarella, Black and White Sexiness from Tokyo to London
2009-01-17 23:59:00 Passarella Death Squad is brainchild of Danny Broddle and Emilie Albisser, the label started in 2004. The latest T-shirt collection using imported fabric from Tokyo, Japan while manufacturing process of the garments happens in London, England.T shirt design-wise, you will see that any Pasarella Death Squad has put much love into combination of photography and sketch art -- putting women at the front as main theme. Black-and-white is another keyword, it' s how Passarella simplifying the sense of elegance with two-color fashion. At least that's what I see on their latest collection. Some of you may found the Passarella tees a little bit vulgar, but can also be spelled sexiness by others.

Rikyu - Little Tokyo
2009-01-09 08:56:00 Rikyu in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles in July 2008. Our waitress was friendly, but the food arrived slow. It wasn't busy at all. In fact, we were the only customers when we got here. Empty restaurants always make me worry, especially when all other restaurants around here were packed, but we were hungry. We decided to eat here. Food quality was like a supermarket food court in Japan, which means it's fine, you can eat it but not restaurant quality, like using store-bought noodles, topping, sauce... New York should learn a little something from Tokyo
2009-01-08 09:45:00 I recently got back to NY from Tokyo, Japan. My wife and I went there for our honeymoon. I was amazed at how clean their city was, how respectful people were to others, and people (no matter what job they held) were courteous and helpful to everyone.Tokyo is a very clean city, there are no cigarette butts on the ground, no gum on the sidewalks, and no trash anywhere. Surprisingly they have no trash cans on any street corners, like you find in NY. People just wait till they find a place with a trash can instead of throwing things on the street. Japanese people have respect for their city.Almost no one in Tokyo smokes. And when they do, they follow the laws and smoke in designated areas. They don't throw cigarettes on the sidewalk or out their car windows. Japanese people don't blow smoke in your face, or walk with a lit cigarette (something that the oblivious and disrespectful europeans truly we saw didn't get.) We were eating on a bench along the sidewalk one day and th...

Shanghai Shokudo Fukuan + SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2008-12-25 14:12:00 This is it. At long last, it took me almost 6 years to find this, but I knew it existed. Chinese pop music lightly playing in the background, chefs chattering in Mandarin, crappy decor, AUTHENTIC HOME-STYLE CHINESE FOOD. Don’t let the dirty alley location fool you, this is no hole in the wall to be ignored. At long last there is a contender to China Cafe 8. The menu may be half the size, but the portions are of absurd proportions. There were days when I almost felt like begging for real Chinese food in Tokyo. The smell, the busy kitchen, a restaurant full of Chinese customers! How I tired of ebi chili and mabo tofu, but NO MORE. It’s as though someone in heaven knew my desired meal budget and my desired tastes, and granted my wish. You’ll be hard pressed to find a meal that won’t leave you feeling stuffed to the brim for over 600 yen. That includes a soup, Chinese pickles and the main dish(depending on what you order). My first dish was pork fried rice, an o...

QUARTER POUNDER + McDonalds + TOKYO, JAPAN
2008-11-14 07:52:00 Just a note, Quarter Pounder is now closed. It turned out to be a short lived campaign and is now over. I doubt anyone in their right mind will actually miss it though Tokyo’s current trend of taking fast food chains and cafes and rebranding them into high-end luxury versions of their former selves has taken a horrible turn this day. While brands such as Mr. Donut get it right with “and on and,” McDonalds has pulled a fast one with their new “QUARTER POUNDER” brand fast food chain. Their website is sleek, simple, two colors with big photos. Their packaging also sleek, no-obvious-brand stylish. From outside it looks like McDonalds is offering a high end lunch alternative in a luxurious environment. Leather chairs, leather tabletops, jet black walls, minimal design. Minimal. The menu consists of only two items. Quarter pounder, or double quarter pounder. Make your selection, then select from ONLY three drinks. Coca Cola, Coca Cola Zero and hot coffee. Tha...
