Taekwondo translations
2008-07-11 20:53:00 Translating Taekwondo moves from Korean to English (that is, to a phonetic form so you can understand them when spoken) is quite possibly one of the most controversial parts of Taekwondo. I've got a lot of translations on my Taekwondo glossary page, and yet more on the pattern pages. Browse the web, and you'll find other sets of translations that are different. Some will basically be simply different ways of producing the same sound, so while I call a front kick "ap chagi" you'll see others writing that as "Ahp Chaggi" or any number of other variations. This is simple enough to understand, but it gets complex when you start seeing variations that bare no resemblance to what you have been taught as the right way. A good example would be the reverse turning kick. When I first started training (that would probably be before you were born) we referred to it as "bandai dollyo chagi". Now it's referred to as simply "horyo". Bandai dolly chagi is (or rather was) an attempt to directly ...

Corrupting the Word of God
2008-06-05 19:39:00 In Genesis 3, we have the fall of mankind. This chapter is full of insightful information as to how man fell, but also as to the temptations we face today are merely the same as those which Adam and Eve faced in the Garden of Eden: Such as, ?the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.?But, for the moment, let us consider the misuse of the Word of God by mankind which led to the fall, for such has continued throughout the ages with men Corrupting the Word of God even unto this day. Really one should take the time to read and mediate on this chapter, for here I will merely try to quickly note the pitfalls we can all find ourselves in when we corrupt the Word of God whether intentionally or not.Note 1: Not all corrupt communication will come in the form of ?God is a liar.?God said: Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat.Serpent said: Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? We see that ?false prophets, which come to you in...

Lost in Translations
2008-01-30 00:32:00 In 2003 a movie came out starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson called “Lost in Translation.” Now I don’t know if Bill or Scarlett read the Bible or not. The movie was about the sense of alienation, loneliness, and confusion we experience sometimes. Perhaps you have felt this way when it comes to Bible translations and wondered why there are so many different Bibles? (more…)
Language Shifting and the Role of Spanish Translations
2008-01-28 14:41:00 A study released by the Pew Hispanic Center in November reports that English fluency increases across generations, even in first-generation monolingual Spanish-speaking families. Furthermore, by the third generation, Spanish has all but faded into the background. While those who arrive in the U.S. as adults may always struggle with learning English, their children either grow up ...

10 Worst Slogan Translations Ever.
2008-01-22 20:01:00 10 Worst Slogan Translations Ever. Here are a few illustrations that suggest that always translations aren't the best options. How simple ad translations led to the goof ups, when products made in states were marketed overseas with English translations of their slogans & instructions:Schweppes Tonic Water: In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water!Bacardi: Bacardi concocted a fruity drink with the name 'Pavian' to suggest French chic ... but 'Pavian' means 'baboon' in German.Ford: Ford seemed to have a problem in Brazil where sales of the Pinto flopped. On investigation the company found out that Pinto was Brazilian slang for "tiny male genita1s." Ford pried the nameplates off and substituted Corcel, which means "horse."Purdue: Chicken-man Frank Purdue's slogan, "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken," got badly mang1ed in a Spanish translation. A photo of Purdue with one of his birds appeared on billboards all over...
