Turkey Day Home Stand Day 8, Game 6, Loss 2
2009-11-29 17:49:00
Last night the Chicago Wolves ended their marathon of a home stand by loosing tho old rivals the Manitoba Moose 4-2. The game seemed to be in Manitoba hands from the start with a first goal before many fans had found their seats. In the following frame the Wolves would start to put up a fight which lasted until the closing minutes but to no avail it would be the Wolves karma to loose last night. Home fans will have a well deserved few days off, Wednesday's game against the IceHogs is an away game. Next Friday Wolves face the Lake Erie Monsters and Saturday The Texas Stars return. As always here are a few images of last nights fun. Wolf...
Wolves Turkey Day Home Stand Day 7, Game 5, Loss 1
2009-11-28 17:55:00
It had to happen sometime, the Chicago Wolves went down to the Abbotsford Heat in yet another one point game 3-2 last night at the Allstate Arena. Historically Black Friday has been a day with an overwhelming pattern of loosing games. Still today is another day, the Wolves will lace them up and strap them on against the Manitoba Moose who will take to the ice at 7:00 tonight. Here are the images as always of last nights festivities.Wolves nettie Drew MacIntyre has ample support form Wolves defense as Kris Chucko tries for a wrap around goal during the first period.Heat's Matt Pelech takes a moment to exchange words with Wolve's blueliner Boris Valabik at the end of a first...
I'll have some turkey with a side of inspiration, please...
2009-11-26 20:58:00
Thanksgiving... the one holiday we all agree on. It's not religious, its not cultural, it's not political. It supersedes all of those things that often divide us as human beings. Thanksgiving is the one holiday where we do the same sort of thing. We gather together with people we love and say "thank you" for the sheer simple pleasure of being together and being alive. We all eat the same basic meal of turkey, dressing, green bean casserole, cranberries and pumpkin pie. It's probably the closest thing we have to a National meal....
Happy Thanksgiving at the Turkey Trot
2009-11-26 18:56:00
Just back from the Turkey Trot 8K in Lincoln Park, and I thought I'd share photos of some of the unsung heroes who came out for the race---the spectator dogs. About a dozen canines ran the race by my count, but tons were out and part of the audience.  I didn't run this year, either, but was the designated driver for this crazy flock. First, three cheers for the friendly volunteers in this truck who handed out free, hot coffee! The park and the course were a little wet, but the sun came out here and there, too. This two came with their trainers from Sit Means Sit.  This lab had good manners, or maybe it's the harness. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!...
Turkey Time
2009-11-25 21:34:00
It has always struck me as silly that the POTUS has to pardon a turkey at Thanksgiving.  Who starts these customs?  I could google it and find out- but I'll let you do the work.  The White House must share my feelings, because they are spoofing themselves in You Tube videos.  People get their shorts in a knot over presidential behavior and clothing, but they are amused by turkey pardoning.  I am amused by this video and the promise of a sequel.  Call me shallow.  I can deal with that.   ...
Turkey or tamales?
2009-11-25 21:12:00
In many Mexican-American households you might find a turkey or tamales on the table this Thanksgiving. In a family like mine you are likely to find both. And throw in a lasagna and kolaczki too. These are some of the holiday foods that we have eaten over the years. Why?That's because in my family we are Mexican-American and we have in-laws that are Italian and Polish. In my extended family we also have family that is Irish, German, Austrian, Colombian, Jamaican and Indian (from India.)So we dive into this culinary diversity during the holiday season. It's one of the reasons that I enjoy the holidays so much. Good food....
You're a Turkey Not a Tattoo!
2009-11-25 20:30:00
It's almost tofurkey day for my family and myself and my brain isn't in the mood to do much other than watch a Golden Girls marathon, cuddle with my Frenchies and drink some adult beverages. Since most of you will be gobbling up the livestock, I've decided to treat you to some fab-u-lous-ness (even if it isn't tattoo related) and other things to be thankful for.Firstly, be thankful you are not this man (unless you are, in which case I'm sure there's someone else out there you're thankful you are not). Next, be thankful for this Simian Mobile Disco song and video (eventhough I can't pretend that I know what the hell is happening). Be extra thankful for the new...
Obama pardons a turkey
2009-11-25 20:22:00

Keep the turkey, season isn't done
2009-11-25 19:13:00
Six games left in the season and to date, things haven't gone as planned. After 10 games we are 4-6. Four and Six. 4 wins and 6 losses. Anyway you say it, our current record is undesirable. If you asked anyone on the team if they saw this coming the answer would be an astounding ... NO!!...

It is quite brilliant really; it has all of the information and details needed to produce that perfect bird for Thanksgiving. All you need now is a turkey and of course an iPhone! Priced at ...

It's Turkey Lurkey Time
2009-11-22 18:17:00
It's "Turkey Lurkey Time." Our friend Rick posted this video on FOF and we can't get enough of it. It's performed at UCLA for a "Broadway Backwards" event where guys do girls' numbers and girls do guy's routines. And boy do these guys bring it! The Chicago Gay Men's Chorus is doing this song in their upcoming show, "Christmas Follies," with full choreography and and choral arrangement. I'm going to go just to see this number. (Visit cgmc.org for ticket information!) "Turkey Lurkey Time" was written by Burt Bachrach and Hal David for the musical "Promises Promises" and it's more of an oddball Christmas song rather than a Thanksgiving song. The song is performed at an office holiday party scene...
Countdown to Thanksgiving Dinner: Wine with Turkey
2009-11-20 19:06:00
The countdown to Thanksgiving dinner continues, with six days to go. Make ahead dishes, from doughs to batters to vinaigrettes, are one way to stay in front of the Thanksgiving game. Another strategy to avoid total madness and stress that often comes on "Wednesday" (maybe Wednesday should be called black Wednesday rather than Friday?)  is to plan and purchase your wine this weekend. Why wait?  I have lots of ideas and will post them over the upcoming days before Thanksgiving, but I also had a fun time on Tuesday at one of Chicago's coolest wine shops, Just Grapes. Watch as owner Don Sritong conducts a class on the Rhone Valley, a tasting of several wines, a "Winemaker's Challenge" wine quiz game and an announcement about...
Eat Right, Turkey...Dietitians say what?
2009-11-20 03:34:00
Thanksgiving is around the corner and "how-to have a healthy holiday" stories are everywhere.  Newspapers, magazines and TV programs ask their best foodie or nutrition expert to offer suggestions for healthy holiday planning, eating and meal making. The popularity of the healthier holiday chat never declines.  And I suppose that makes sense - We all want to eat our faces off this turkey day - but we don't want to spend the new year wearing drawstring pants and weighing our food.  We want to be thankful, enjoy company, dine well and eat right.  So, in order to make your healthier holiday reading easier, I'm going to create your one-stop-blog for the "top healthy eating for the holiday" nutrition advice.  For...
Stuff your turkey, instead of yourself this Thanksgiving.
2009-11-16 22:41:00
My 21 month old daughter was missing on Saturday. My back was turned for five minutes while I was feeding our seven month old and our older kids were running in and out of the house with our neighbors kids. I asked my husband if he had seen our daughter and as soon as he said no we began calling out her name, looking in all the rooms, under beds and in closets. I opened the pantry door to find her standing surrounded by Halloween candy and wrappers, a chocolate mouth to prove it! I figured at that point it was time to get rid of the candy. It opened my eyes to see that everything we do this time...

Pre-Turkey Day prep and other weekend events
2009-11-06 22:38:00
Don't be fooled by the candy-laden traces of Halloween still lurking around your house. Thanksgiving isn't far off (less than three weeks!), and now's the time to commit to either making the big meal or leaving it to the experts. If you're determined to cook, get yourself into the spirit at the Planning for Holiday Parties class at Wave (644 N. Lake Shore Drive. W Hotel, 312-255-4460). Chef Kristine Subido shows you how to cook a multi-course meal of spiced squash soup, ricotta gnocchi, brioche bread pudding with brown-butter caramel and, of course, oven-roasted turkey tenderloin and stuffing. Sound too overwhelming? Place your order this weekend for a turkey to-go from Smoke Daddy (1804 W. Division St. 773-772-6656), and feed...

A Turkey Trot for tykes at the Kohl's Children's Museum
2009-11-02 20:36:00
The "Turkey Trot" event at the Kohl's Children's MuseumOn Sunday, November 8, families can participate in a "Turkey Trot" to raise money for the Kohl's Children's Museum in Glenview (which is a wonderful local resource for families by the way). The 3rd annual "Turkey Trot" promises fun for the whole family. Participants will walk a course around Habitat Park (the museum's outdoor exhibit). The kiddos will be assigned a runner number, receive stickers for each lap they run and a golden turkey trophy to take home. The morning also features live entertainment by Stand and Clap, arts and crafts, and breakfast goodies. Plus, they are going to have a bouncy house (my kids would pretty much go anywhere for the...

Cranberry-Glazed Turkey Rolls
2009-09-13 10:00:00
I've been holding onto this recipe until the weather was more apropo and now that we've got a zip to the air I think it's time. It's got all the benefits of a Thanksgiving dinner without the work and calories--or the pumpkin pie, that's extra. You've got to come up with that one on your own.It uses turkey cutlets which are nice and lean and they are stuffed with prepared stuffing mix then topped with a cranberry sauce. All very quick.1 tablespoon butter1/2 cup diced peeled apple1/3 cup chopped onion1 garlic clover, minced3/4 cup chicken broth1/4 teaspoon dried sage1 cup dry seasoned stuffing mix8 turkey cutlets1/4 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper1 cup canned whole berry cranberry sauce1/4 cup orange juiceSaute apple, onion and garlic in butter over medium heat until onions are soft. Add broth and sage and bring to a boil. Stir in stuffing and remove from heat.Place each cutlet between 2 sheets of plastic wrap and pound to 1/4-inch thickness. Spread 1/4 cup stu...

Sarah Palin Explains The Turkey Interview
Human rights in Turkey are still a disaster
2009-02-04 15:02:00
You would think that in Turkey, things are civilized enough for a country of their sort, right? Not so according to this item by Steven Plaut on FPM, which talks about Tayyip Erdogan's sick assault on Israel at the UN: Brutal force has been used against Kurdish separatists and other political groups. Indeed, the operations of the Turkish military against the Kurds make Israel's recent incursion

Like Peas and Carrots.... The Dawg is still wounded from last week. Bad week for the Dawg and he is now 30-23 ATS with 17,000 dawg bones. Here are my Turkey day selections, all for 1000 Dawg bones:Tennessee -11 over Detroit. Detroit will get one this season, but it won't be today in this national setting. Jeff Fischer and the gang are going to breeze through Detroit like a Toyotathon gangbang. Seattle +12.5 over Dallas. This is just toooo many points. Romo is notorious for choking it up in national games like this. Especially when his girlfriend is in attendance. Dallas wins, but not by this much. Arizona +3 over Philly. The Dawg has the honor of attending this game in a plush pimpass suite. I'll be eating turkey cheesesteaks and drinking muscatel by kickoff. Watch for the naked guy storming the field in the third quarter, that will be me. Philly is broken, and Warner takes out his NFC East beating from last week on the birds. Thats how I roll.
