Eye-for-an-eye hockey culture blindsides Blackhawks in Vancouver loss
2009-10-22 19:05:00
I attended Loyola University for 3 1/2 years, but I only graduated from F. U. magna come loudly. Quite a few ignoramus graduates from F. U. So belligerent alumni meetings become a daily occurrence as we cross one another's paths in search of enlightment from people who were smart enough to avoid all the shit F. U. stands for and walk the straight and narrow. So I seek your guidance here. We now anxiously await breaking news, although hopefully not from an indecipherable Joel Quenneville, our own Doctor No. He could convey as much critical information if he spoke solely in mandarin Chinese in his post-game post mortems. In fact, I'd recommend it with that NHL initiative of going...
?A Cruel Tax?, Bill Vanderzalm tells Rally Today in Vancouver
2009-09-20 01:33:00
You would think Bill Vanderzalm was a movie star, the way people reacted to him at this afternoon’s Anti-HST rally at Canada Place in Vancouver, crowding around him afterwards to take his photo or get theirs taken with him.  Now in his seventies, the former premier of British Columbia who’s leading-man-looks have faded a little ...

The Hundred Dollar Diet
2009-09-18 05:29:00
Vancouver: I stopped by the Farmers Market on the lawn of Pacific Central Station, a magnet for people making an effort to follow the Hundred Mile Diet. I bought an organic Macintosh apple to snack on as I walked home.  It was $1.09, an expensive apple it seemed to me.  I bit into it, expecting ...

VOLANDO VERSO VANCOUVER 2010
2009-07-23 07:00:00

Kash Cool Restaurant in North Vancouver
2009-02-24 16:00:00
If there is one major cuisine that I have never tried before, it is Persian cuisine.  This is despite that there is a large Iranian community here in Vancouver, particularly in North Vancouver.  My impression about Iranians in Vancouver is that they are either rich refugees from the Shah period or that they are great ...
Vancouver?s white christmas, not so nice.
2009-02-23 08:32:00
While we might have had one of the snowiest christmas’ to date, it was also one of the worst for commuters. The city’s engineering services attempted to keep vancouver running smoothly by clearing and salting main routes in and around vancouver. They cleared out cars that were abandoned on the sides of these routes by ...

There was a long line-up last Saturday for the free turkey dinner cooked and served by students in the cooking, baking, and food service programs at Vancouver Community College, Pender St. campus. Judy Rogers has been fired after ten years as Vancouver’s City Manager. The fact that supporters of Vancouver’s freshly elected Mayor Gregor Robertson at City Hall wanted her gone has been an open secret for some time.  After the news broke though, Mayor Gregor Robertson refused to call it a firing, choosing instead to speak euphemistically: ?Technically, it?s a cessation of her duties ...

Chilli Padi on Fraser St, Vancouver
2008-12-02 06:12:00
We met up with Angie (of Sea Salt With Food) again for a Sunday lunch. We wanted to go for Indonesian and choose the Sweet Chili Cafe but it was closed on Sunday. Being already hungry and all set for hot and spicy South East Asian food, we went to the next place we can think of. A short drive to 41st and Fraser brought us to Chilli Padi. Chilli Padi is a Malay restaurant and located in the old location of Kedah House (another Malaysian restaurant). I describe Chilli Padi as a Malay restaurant as opposed to a Malaysian restaurant because it serves Malay food. Malaysian food encompasses a wider cuisine that includes Chinese and Indian cuisine.

Gypsy Rose Crepe Cafe in Vancouver
2008-11-23 16:00:00
Polly and I had wanted to try something other than cake. When we drove down Granville St, we always noticed a Crepe Shop and had wanted to try it but never got to do it. A few weeks ago, I saw a small write up in the newspaper about a Crepe Cafe and it said that it's one of the best crepe shop in town. So, Polly and I decided to try out this Gypsy Rose Crepe Cafe.

Vancouver?s former police chief Jamie Graham is working at Simon?s Bike shop on Robson St., selling bikes. And that?s where he should stay, say members of Canadians Opposing Political Psychiatry. Political Psychiatry in Vancouver Raised by Candidate for Mayor
2008-11-13 19:12:00
Soviet-style political psychiatry practiced in Vancouver has been attracting attention internationally but I?d never heard it mentioned by a candidate in the civic election campaign.  Until Monday.  At an All Candidates meeting in the theater of Carnegie Center, Independent mayoral candidate Golok Buday (pictured above in black cap), said: ?Car 87 forces it?s drugs on ...
Flying United Airlines from Vancouver to Altanta (via Chicago)
2008-11-13 15:00:00
I put in my travel request to Atlanta and was routed through Chicago. Seeing I had never been to the third largest city in the US before, I made a quick change of itinerary to include a few days stop in Chicago. So ... this is the series on my trip to Atlanta (again) and the Windy City, Chicago. As usual, the flight to Atlanta means a very early start. I normally opt for the first flight of the day which is about 6AM. I like early morning flight because by the time I land in Atlanta, it will just be 5PM'ish and that leaves me a lot of time to settle down and prep for the next day.

A $100 Million Olympic Hole in Vancouver
2008-11-07 04:12:00
A big story broke this morning in the Vancouver civic campaign via the Globe and Mail. Gary Mason reported that the city had agreed to provide loans of up to $100 million to the Millennium Development Corporation in order to shore up the floundering construction of the Olympic Village. The city's Director of Finance has apparently resigned over the issue, and NPA mayoral candidate (and the current chair of the city finance committee) Peter Ladner has been silent since being confronted with the story at this morning's mayoral debate. In addition to local media, the CBC, The Canadian Press, The Calgary Herald and The UK Guardian have all picked up the story, dealing a potentially a devastating blow to Ladner and the NPA with just 9 day's left in the campaign. It was the top story on the Global TV, and to be frank, the sight of Ladner publicly shocked when confronted with the news that the city's Director of Finance had resigned was not good for his cause.More from Vision here and ...

Tenhachi Japanese Restaurant in Shaugnessy Village
2008-11-05 15:00:00
We met up with Kim Ho for dinner last month. Kim Ho had been a prolific commenter on chowtimes and he also had a blog which he calls it Words of Wind. He recommended a Japanese restaurant Tenhaci which apparently is one of those places that had been blogged about many times by local Vancouver food bloggers. Tenhaci is located in the ground floor of a bed-and-breakfast place unlike the B&B that most people are accustomed to. Firstly, despite the name Shaugnessy Village it is not anywhere like the tony Shaugnessy neighborhood. Shaugnessy Village is more like a cheap hotel more than it is a B&B.
Vancouver Elected Official ?Pulls a Sarah Palin? by Using her Private Email

When it comes to conducting government business on her private email account, rather than on her official government account that would put the email on public record, Vision Vancouver’s Eleanor Gregory is beginning to look as much like Sarah Palin as Tina Fey. Just as hackers exposed Palin for conducting business as Alaska?s governor on her ...

I have an insight. The block party Insite supporters held yesterday afternoon was an attempt to embarrass Canada?s freshly re-elected Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Insite supporters — particularly executives and staff at the PHS Community Services Services Society which operates Insite — do not want Harper to shut down this space where junkies in Vancouver ...
Jennifer Aniston "Nippling" in Vancouver
2008-10-15 14:20:00
Jennifer Aniston "Nippling" in Vancouver In addition, Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer, it seems, couldn't stay away from each other for too long, as the two have reportedly rekindled their romance. According to The National Enquirer, the 'Friends' star and the singer were spotted kissing in Los Angeles on October 13, after they arrived together via private plane. It was in August that the couple's three and a half months romance came to an abrupt end. But, the couple recently met again in Manhattan and were behaving like lovers on their way back to California. "They were very lovey-dovey. They kissed several times and hugged each other tightly. John gave her a long, lingering kiss," PerezHilton.com quoted an insider, as saying. While the couple took their separate ways after reaching LA, their kissing has set the rumour mills running in full speed. An insider said: "Jennifer was in New York doing some shopping before she starts promotional work for her new movies, 'He's Just N...
Gregor Changes Vancouver, Ladner Goes on Vacation
2008-10-10 09:06:00
I believe in a genuine free market where consumers are offered choices and business needs to compete in order to deliver the best product.  Most of us embrace this vision in one form or another, but in the hands of many right wing parties the idea often become bastardized. It's another form of the rights vs responsibility argument I laid out some weeks ago.  The idea that the market will solve all problems by the simple force of our own self interest is an alluring fairy tale because it allows us to ignore one entire half of the moral imperative - responsibility - and dwell solely in what our own individual rights are, a simple and sometimes more appealing view because its easier than concerning ourselves with the consequences of our actions that extend beyond ourselves.  One form of that is a certain apathy that evolves in some political parties. Harper has been badly caught out in this trap over the past days as the world's economy continues to recieve bad news and he continues ...
JANET JACKSON SETS OFF HER TOUR IN VANCOUVER..
2008-09-11 21:55:00
In the fad-hungry world of pop music, seven years is a lifetime. Many who make it to the tops of the charts one year will be nothing but a frothy memory seven years after their career climax. But Janet Jackson - who launched her first tour in seven years Wednesday night with a high-voltage performance at GM Place - has a secure place in the pop world. The soft-spoken diva has a fan base and track record that allow her the rare privilege of hiding from the spotlight for years at a time before breaking out again. But when she decides it's time for a tour, Ms. Jackson makes sure it's done right.READ THE REST OF THE REVIEW HERE
Alleged Human Rights Abuser on Vancouver?s 2010 Winter Olympics Organizing
2008-08-24 02:20:00
During the Olympics in Beijing, the Chinese media asked British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell tough questions about how he intended to clean up the squalor of homelessness and drug abuse on Vancouver?s impoverished Downtown Eastside before hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. They were legitimate questions. The Chinese media had obviously been ...
Vancouver Aquarium
2008-08-23 05:51:00
I took Kasia to the Vancouver Aquarium to see the new baby beluga whale. Well, actually I was hoping to show her the whole aquarium, as we had with Tigana at this age, but somebody must have prepped her that the big thing at the aquarium was the new baby whale, so that's what she wanted to see, and she dragged me through the other exhibits at breakneck speed to get to the baby beluga. We had to stand in line for about 25 minutes, which wasn't too bad from my point of view though pretty much at Kasia's limit. When we finally got in, we received an orientation that I found interesting, and at which Kasia put up her hand and asked "What's the baby's name?" (They hadn't named her yet.) The orientation warned us that the baby was spending a lot of her time in an adjacent pool because the mother and grandmother whales were trying to teach the baby that the neighbouring pool was safe, even though there was only one entrance. So we went through to the viewing room, and sure enough, th...
Vancouver
2008-08-22 23:47:00
We spent a couple of days in Vancouver to visit family, and enjoy the sights. We drove out to Horseshoe Bay to pick up nephew from Ferry, and the kids found a whale in the playground/park next to the dock. The whale spouts when you trigger a button. And we spent a pleasant afternoon in Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver; I'm pleased with this photo of Lillies I took with my little digital camera:Kasia putting one foot on the grass...next to the don't walk on the grass signAnd we spent some time in Steveston. I bought some Chinese DVDs in Night Market, along with tons of food from various stalls. Entertaining way to spend an evening, but we left before the crowds got too scary.
