2012-05-03 20:50:00
Thinking of giving up meat from your diet? The potential health benefits of a green diet are well established, but a story by the Mother Nature Network (MNN) says there are also some potential side effects and health risks associated with a vegetarian lifestyle. Could low cholesterol kill you? A study by the Honolulu Heart ...
Adele Is Going Vegetarian (And No, It?s Not For Weight Loss)
2012-04-02 23:22:00
Adele told Britain's Radio 1 that she's going vegetarian?and while she did say that it is part of her effort to be healthy, it's not about weight loss (as some tabloids have been reporting?seriously, guys: there's a difference between prioritizing health and obsessing over weight). In fact, she says the switch is mostly motivated by her dog. More »Post from: Blisstree
Mexican Chunky Salsa
2012-03-08 16:00:00
Lez also served a chunky salsa along the Mexican Potato Empanadas and Mexican Refried Beans at the Gilmore Park Church Community Kitchen. Minoo brought some Green Salsa which she made during the summer when tormatilla is in abundance. She freezed the Green Salsa in small containers and defrosts one at a time when she needs it. The Green Salsa goes well with the empanadas.

The Richmond Community Kitchen met again at the Gilmore Park Church for another cookingsession. We were fortunate to have Lez to demonstrate some Mexican food to the group. Lez demonstrated to us how to make Mexican Potato Empanadas, a vegetarian version. It is filled with potatoes, corn, green peppers and cheese.
Beety Vegetarian Borscht

The South Arm Cooking Club for Seniors met again on Valentine's Day. Michelle had planned a Valentine's Day menu with the color red in mind. Unfortunately in the morning of the meeting day, Michelle did not feel well and had to leave the kitchen to Stella to manage. We wished Michelle well. We had a group of very capable seniors and everything went well. The first dish is a Beety Vegetarian Borscht. It is a sweet vegetable stew of beets, cabbage, carrot and tomatoes.

Vegetarian Festival - Piercings and Firecrackers
2011-10-15 04:33:00
Yes, more vegetarian festival (and apologies for scary photos)! There is so much to see during the 10 day festival, and this year I had my parents visiting - they'd never been here for the vegetarian festival before, and wanted to see as much as possible! On the morning of October 4th, Kathu Shrine was the place to be. We arrived about 6:30am... a bit late actually as the lead elements of the procession were already starting to leave the shrine for the walk into Phuket Town - about 8km away. Reminder for next year: get there at 6am. The shrine is only a few minutes drive from our house. During the festival we can hear music and firecrackers coming from the shrine every night - as the crow flies the shrine is only 1km away. I like to visit Kathu shrine rather than the big ones in Phuket Town. Kathu is very much for the local people and after a few visits people will recognise you, it's a friendly place. We'd already been for the opening ceremonies and for an evening street process...
Vegetarian Procession and World Photo Walk 2nd October
2011-10-10 13:37:00
On Sunday October 2nd, I was in Phuket Town nice and early (about 7:30am) with Mum and Dad for 2 reasons... Of course, the vegetarian festival was on from 26th September - 6th October, and on the morning of the 2nd was one of the big street processions from the Bang Neow shrine in Phuket Town - I was in town last year for the procession from this shrine and got lots of good photos - see Bang Neow Shrine Vegetarian Procession 2010. Also, October 2nd was the date of the Worldwide Photo Walk, something which I have done in 2010 and 2009. Groups of photographers all over the world take a walk in their home towns all on the same day - more info at the Worldwide Photo Walk website. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is (I think) somewhat misunderstood. The images that come out of the festival are normally those of pierced faces. And for sure that's what I have concentrated on for the last couple of years. The blood and the shock value is certainly a real part of the festival and the last post...
Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2011 - Part 1
2011-09-29 03:48:00
The 2011 Phuket Vegetarian Festival is on now. The event started 26th September in the evening and continues until 6th October. See : Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2011 Schedule for more details. A few days into the festival now, and the street processions have started. I have not been to watch one of these early morning processions yet this year, might do that tomorrow, and will certainly be in town on Sunday 2nd October for the procession from Bang Nieow Shrine in Phuket Town. My parents are visiting from England and they want to see various aspects of the festival, though we also want to do other things in and around Phuket. The weather has not been to kind. Quite a lot of rain on the 26th and 27th for the first couple of festival days. And yet, the rain has a habit of easing off if you are brave enough to get out there. On September 26th we all went to Kathu Shrine (our local - about 2km from our house) for the opening ceremonies of the vegetarian festival. At 5pm the Go Teng pole i...

It's National Vegetarian Week: What's a lapsed vegetarian to do?
2011-05-26 20:22:00
It's National Vegetarian Week! I for one am celebrating because I am no longer a vegetarian, which means I no longer have to spend countless hours defending my vegetarianism. My husband and I were vegetarian for a period of about nine years that ended just over a decade ago. And just to dispel any stereotypes, making the change from omnivore to herbivore was his idea....
Vegan Vs. Vegetarian Lifestyles ? What?s the Difference?

Florence: Vegetarian, vegan and kosher restaurants
2010-10-20 17:27:00
By Laura Mongillo in Florence— Even though Florence is the home of the “bistecca fiorentina,” a steak that is sold by the kilo and never to just one person, the city is quite welcoming to vegetarians, vegans, people who eat kosher and various other diets. Oddly enough, almost all of the vegetarian and vegan fare that Florence has to offer in centered around Piazza San Marco.  So if you are planning a trip, try to find a hotel in that area to make it easier to find meal and snack options.  Here is what the city has to offer in terms of vegetarian, vegan and kosher restaurants and markets, which often also specialize in organic and fair trade food. Il Vegetariano Via delle ruote, 30r http://www.il-vegetariano.it/ This is the best-known vegetarian restaurant in Florence, literally named “The Vegetarian.”  The prices are pretty low, starting at €4-6 for “primi piatti” (light dishes), and €8-9 for “secondi piatti” (main dishes). They pr...
2010 Vegetarian Festival (Part 1)
2010-10-18 15:41:00
Well, that's all done for another year. One of the craziest times of year in Phuket.. come to think of it, certainly the craziest. Some people hate the vegetarian festival or are bored by it, or just moan that the street processions disrupt traffic around Phuket Town. Some people hardly notice the festival, as it really only affects Phuket Town and small communities with a Chinese-Thai background like Kathu, Sapam or Tha Reua. If you sit on the beach at Kata for the duration of the festival, you won't see anything. Personally I love it. Love the old traditions, love the way the local community comes together and maintain these traditions, I love the crazy street processions, love taking photos and I also use the vegetarian festival as an excuse for 10 days of detox. I stick to the diet, drink no alcohol.. although I don't wear white and certainly don't impale myself with sharp objects. Leave that to the real devotees.• Lots of photos here: Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2010 (m...

Apologies to my friend Stacey, but her family has been relegated to "eh, they like us already so who cares if the squash is oily?" which is one step above "let's not change out of our pajamas for them". Maybe that's a compliment? In the spirit of sharing, let's discuss what I've been serving this week anyway!Roasted Butternut Squash & Spinach*The "roasted" part sounds fancy, but all you do is peel and dice a hard squash, sprinkle some olive oil on it with salt and pepper and bake the pieces in 400 degrees until tender. Meanwhile, sautee a red onion in olive oil, wilt a package of fresh spinach and then combine all the ingredients in a serving dish. Spritz a little...

Arthritic Phil Mickelson turns vegetarian
2010-08-12 00:40:00
I wonder if Phil Mickelson ever thought about the consequences of turning forty and the possible unwelcome side-effects? (credit)   Five days before the U.S. Open (and right before his big birthday), Mickelson awakened with "intense pain" and couldn't move. Lefty's doctor visit found him to be suffering from psoriatic arthritis but a weekly treatment of shots seems to have put the symptoms under control.   A friend of mine once mentioned that turning forty was no picnic; to be wary of the bevy of doctors visits, new meds that you will be taking, etc... and now I'm getting worried!     From doctor's visits to a 'one-eighty' turnaround in diet, Phil Mickelson is a changed man. A veggie burger doesn't really taste like the real thing, no matter how much you tell yourself it does but, after a few bites, it's not so bad.   Mickelson said of his new-and-improved diet, "As long as I believe that there’s a possibility that it will help me ...

Being Vegetarian
2010-07-12 07:20:00
Give me some minutes and I?ll give you 1 perfect reason for being vegetarian. While fish serves as the major dietary supply of the long-chain omega-3s eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, which have been shown to be essential in supporting brain health, low intake of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in vegetarians won't adversely affect mood, based on a new study (Nutr J. 2010;9:26. DOI:10.1186/1475-2891-9-26). A study team from Arizona State University conducted a cross-sectional study to check the mood of vegetarians who never eat fish with the mood of healthy omnivorous adults. A total of 138 healthy Seventh Day Adventist adults residing in Arizona and California (64 vegetarians and 79 non-vegetarians) were enrolled in the study and completed a health history questionnaire, food frequency questionnaire and a couple psychometric tests, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and also the Profile of Mood States.. Vegetarians had significantly lower mean intake...

Pasta Primavera - Vegetarian Style
2010-03-28 19:00:00
Well, I was going to post this last night but after having participated in Earth Hour I decided to just keep all things off and head to bed early.I am dedicating this recipe to a really good friend, Jeanine Valdez.  She was the first person that accepted me in the firm I work at now, as an employee and as a friend.  She left the firm about 4 years ago but we've kept in touch over the years.  She is a great person to know. One day, while working with her, I told her I would make her something that was completely vegetarian that I believe she would enjoy.  This dish was the first thing I created for her and brought...
Being a Vegetarian...No it's not contagious!
2010-02-18 08:44:00
Growing up Italian and Irish, every dinner consisted of meat, potatoes and a vegetable.  There was no altering the menu. So the fact that I ended up being a vegetarian was a bit of a surprise to my parents.  I think they thought I joined a cult! For me, it was not that far of a stretch.    As a kid, I was not a big fan of meat.  My parents would make me 'clean my plate' before leaving the table.  So to avoid eating meat, I would hide it in my napkin or keep it in my mouth until dinner was over.  My parents quickly caught onto those tricks so then I would hide the meat in my...
Lemon Rasam Recipe
2010-02-10 11:29:00
My mom only makes one kind of rasam. Its watery, peppery, has no dal, and is ready in 7 mins flat. After getting married to a Tam Brahm I realized there are close to a gazillion different types of rasam and then some more. If dal or paruppu is added to rasam back home then we explicitly call it paruppu rasam and it resembles sambar, although taste-wise, its quite different. Anyway, long story short, now I am introduced to the world of rasam where every single variety has a unique taste not just on the ingredients used but also depending on who makes it. Isn't that mindbogglingly amazing?  Let's just say yes and move on shall we.  Ingredients for lemon rasam Lemon rasam is interesting to me for two reasons. Lemon or lime totally rocks. Although I would still choose a molten chocolate cake over a lemon pie for dessert, as a fruit, I respect lemon. It really packs a lot of stuff in its small yellow self. Another reason why this lemon rasam calls out to me is addition of fr...
Arbi / Colocasia / Cheppankizhangu Fry Recipe
2010-02-08 10:16:00
I am not going to go yap yap yap through this recipe. The pictures will do the talking. Oh just one thing. If you are like me and used to turn down cheppankizhangu because its too "slimy" then this dish will make you rethink. Well, its fried, that's a no-brainer but apart from that, it also brings out the unique flavour this tuber has. What you need to make the Cheppankizhangu Fry (apart from a mother-in-law who cooks this for you and waits patiently while you click pictures at every step) 500gm cheppankizhangu / arbi/ colocasia / chembu 5 tbsp (more or less) rice flour 1 tbsp besan / kadala maavu / gram flour (optional - you can also use rava / semolina instead) 2 tsp red chilli powder A generous pinch of turmeric powder A generous pinch of asafoetida / perungaayam / hing Salt to taste Oil to deep fry Let's get started. Here's how to make the Cheppankizhangu Fry. 1. Wash and boil the Cheppankizhangu in enough water to cover it for about 10-12 mins until it is coo...
Nan On Tawa or Tawa Naan Recipe - Step by Step
2010-02-04 13:21:00
Naan or Nan is TH's favourite bread. That and palak paneer are his absolute favourite dishes to order in a restaurant. I recently got the book Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day from the library and got totally smitten by it.  I don't have most of the stuff that they have mentioned as requirements, like pizza peel and oven thermometer and baking stone and even a proper oven to do broiler method of baking in but this, this Tawa Nan I could try. The dough is the master Boule recipe mentioned in Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day. I halved the recipe since I only wanted to use it for Nan the first time around.  Here's what we need first - 3/4 tbsp of active dry yeast. Please make sure that its fresh and not past the expiration date. Why do I mention this explicitly? Err... no particular reason. Let's move on.  Throw the yeast in a bowl with 1.5 cups of lukewarm water. I warmed my water in the microwave for a minute on medium-high powder. The recipe says no ne...

So you think you can be a vegetarian?
2009-12-18 10:42:00
Hot water cornbread, vegetarian black eyed peas and vegetarian collard greens, cooked by Shamontiel Telling someone I'm a vegetarian always leads to three types of conversations--the fascinating conversation, the bonding conversation or the frustrating conversation. The frustration happens when someone chooses to accuse a vegetarian (or a vegan) of being unhealthy, needing meat in their lives and the indifferent attitude about slaughterhouses. The fascinating conversations are the ones I have with people who are interested in eating healthier or trying the vegetarian or vegan lifestyle but really just don't know where to start and ask for advice. The bonding conversations are the ones I have with people who act like a Chicago south sider would if he (or she)...

Vegetarian Festival Procession Photos
2009-10-27 14:21:00
Well, the 2009 Phuket Vegetarian festival is now over. As normal, wish I had more time to see all the different events, visit more shrines, but work and family do just about come first! During the week I had no time, but on Saturday and Sunday woke early and headed to the processions. The street processions in Phuket Town happened every day from the 20th to 26th October. I cannot recommend enough that, should you be in Phuket during the festival, you should make the effort to see something... something that you will not have seen before!I managed a full 9 days on the vegetarian diet, eating food only from the restaurants and stalls selling the "Jae" food, no meat, no dairy, no garlic (it's smelly). Oh, and no alcohol - 9 days without a beer is something of a miracle for me! There are still events that I have not seen, not photographed such as fire walking, and the final night (which was last night) in Phuket Town, where the streets are packed with people and the air is full of fire...

October 24 is also 350.org's International Day of Climate Action, with 181 countries creating 4,500 events bringing environmental awareness.   The South Side Chicago campaign with Soul Vegetarian Restaurant was created by Zarakyah Ben Ahmadiel, Chairman of RBG (Red, Black, Green) Environmental Restoration Agency, with the help of Soul Vegetarian...
Some Photos from Kathu Shrine - Vegetarian Festival
2009-10-22 03:56:00
The vegetarian festival is underway, there have been a couple of the street processions in Phuket Town already, I have been eating the special Jae diet for 4 days now and driving home last night past the Phuket Brewery I was gagging for a beer.. but part of the festival is purification, cleaning the body.. so no beers until next week.Would have uploaded a few photos earlier, but the Gremlins struck twice this week. Our wireless internet modem at home suddenly stopped working, and then.. as I was taking photos at Kathu village shrine on Saturday 17th October for the opening ceremony of the festival, my EOS 20D decided to **** up. I got some photos of the people as prayers were said, incense was burned and the Go Teng pole was blessed, and then just as I hoped to get some action shots of the pole being raised, I got "Error 99". Won't bore you with details... looks like a lens issue, so the lens will need fixing. Oddly, it was working just fine a couple of days later.. but can't be 1...
