Tom Parish's Venice at Gruen Galleries
2009-10-27 02:43:00
by Martha SarnoGrand Gruen Galleries offers an interestingly vast space with a full variety of art. I receive warm greetings from the friendly staff seated at a panel of desks. Two tiny, smiling, fluffy dogs emerge from behind. They appear to be performing a choreographed tap dance across the impeccably clean hard wood floors....

737conserve Venice Green Home

Remember when we mentioned project7ten?  We were probably one of the earliest to mention the wildly popular home, so we were interested to notice that some of the same folks behind project7ten just finished another green home called 737conserve.  Located at 737 Milwood Avenue and designed by Patrick Tighe, 737conserve has the same warm and modern feel that project7ten has.  Here are some photos and a list of of its many green elements: An expansive green roof; On-site, solar photovoltaic array; Smart home energy management system; WaterSense plumbing by Kohler; Non-toxic glues, solvents, and paints; Energy-efficient Lennox HVAC system; Energy-efficient windows; UltraTouch denim insulation; and A green, natural lap pool; The Venice, California home is absolutely stunning and progressive with flourishes of green.  In a recent Huffington Post article, Tom Schey, general contractor and owner of 737conserve, asks if anyone's interested in his green home exp...

The Wrestler (2009)
2008-09-08 08:55:00
Evan Rachel Wood, who plays Randy's estranged daughter Stephanie, pulls off a solid performance. If anything she felt a bit under utilized. We learn little about her character other than she is a lesbian and that her father bailed out on her a long time ago. While her first scene doesn't shake the screen her scene with Randy on the boardwalk in midwinter is both beautiful and touching.

Book review: Merchant of Venice
2008-08-04 14:18:00
Merchant of Venice (Graphic Novel) by Garath Hinds Following his uber-impressive and successful Beowulf Hinds has decided to tackle one of Shakespeare more thorny plays. His tact is most interesting; as the verbiage begins in modern language and gradually returns to the Bard’s original word. This is a clever device that drags the reader in whether well ...

Venice Surf Report 06/06/08 The Economy Has Still Got It
2008-06-06 16:05:00
Decided to check Bay St. again this morning as it was kinda cool when I saw it yesterday and it brought back a little nostalgia from when I started at Swellmagnet all those years ago.Plus, the tide is a -1.5 ft at 6:30 am, so I knew that Venice would be pretty much worthless. And guess what? So was Bay St. There is some pretty decent windswell in the chest / head high range, but there just isn't enough water to get anything going other than 3 block long, super dumpy closeouts, with nary a snaggable corner to be had. I say give it a chance to fill in, say around 10:30 or so. The winds should still be manageable, you'll be getting a decent push up from the tides and the dawn patrol should be long gone. Of course, this is assuming you don't have a job and can make your own schedule. Either way, I'm stuck here at my desk hoping my ankle feels better by tomorrow so I can get out there.About 5-6 dudes out scattered around Towers 18-20, calm/variable winds, beautiful day shaping up, bri...

Had to go to the docs today to get my ankle air cast fixed. Turns out the only things wrong with it were a) it was on backwards and 2) their was no air in it. Other than that, though, A-OK.Onshore at 5-7 kts at Bay St. but there were three guys out there scoring some nice rides in the waist high range.Keep an eye on the wind, that is what will kill it eventually. Real high tide tonight might offer up some fun at the Pier or the Breakwater if the winds behave. So, again, I don't know why I keep postng these as I guess it really isn't news anymore, but once again the car infront of me on then 10 starts weaving like the driver is drunk, so I go to pass and guess what? Yep, another drive by makeup apply. Why not, though? I mean, maybe I'm thinking about this all wrong. Maybe the reason I don't enjoy my commute is I don't provide myself with enough distraction while I am behind the wheel. But not anymore. Nope, tomorrow I am bringing my portable DVD player, the laptop, a book and mayb...
Venice Surf Report 06/04/08 Heeeeere's Foreclosure!
2008-06-04 16:20:00
Venice Surf Report Free Daily Surf Report Venice BeachEhhhhh....Super low tide, onshore at 5-7 kts, overcast, kinda chilly / drizzly BUT.....there were some corners being snagged out there. Windswell in the knee-waist high range is a lot of fun for the 80 lb and under crowd, but if you can get that bigger board turned and slotted, well, there are some plus sets if you are choosy. And it's gotta be more fun than work, right? Or at least make work more fun if you have to go afterwards.Winds are supposed to increase to 30 kts this afternoon so given that it has already started I do not think you have the luxury of waiting for the tide to fill in. 5-6 out total, parking about 50% gone, onshores steady and freshening, slight bump on the water and cool and overcast conditions. So, think the foreclosure problem is isolated to poor people who were duped into signing loan docs they didn't understand? Not so fast. Word out today that Ed McMahon, longtime sidekick of Johnny Carson on NBC's Th...
Venice Surf Report 06/03/08 Randy Randy
2008-06-03 17:15:00
Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Southern CaliforniaClean, but small. Combine that with a negative low tide, which will be with us all week, and well, you can guess the results. Small, dumpy, weak windswell waves in the knee high+ range, with anything other than a straight run at the beach the exception rather than the rule. Here is that exception.Surprisingly about 15 out total on both sides, street parking available (beware the street cleaning ticket patrol!), overcast and clammy, offshore breeze and a glassy surface. The boyos were out early this morning, and were heavily into the booze by the time I saw them at 6:30 am. I walked over to say hello and noticed that Randy was looking a little out of it, as it were. Turns out that he had been arrested a couple of days earlier and since his release had been on a mission to get as wasted as humanly possible as often as possible. In pursuit of this goal he had spent the entire night sitting up drinking a bottle of Ouzo someone had giv...

2008-06-02 19:26:00
Well - a severely sprained ankle is going to put the surf reports on hold for at least the next couple days, and perhaps longer. I did it Staurday night when I twisted my ankle playing one-on-one aginst, and almost losing to, an 11 year old kid. It's a long story, but a hole in the concrete and my ankle met and the result was a nice snap, and, combined with the taunting of the little bastard and me refusing to quit, well, I'm sure it didn't help.I then probably didn't do it any favors when I surfed the next morning even though I could barely walk. Net result was me spending about 5 hours at the Emergency Room last night and wearing an air cast today. But at least it is not broken, which I really thought for sure it was.So, even though I am at work today, I am not going to be here tomorrow as I am going to try and baby this thing as I have a surf trip to Mex planned in about 4 weeks, and if I spend all that money and can't surf, well, that would really suck.Good news is I will de...

Venice Surf Report 05/31/08 The Duality Of Man
2008-06-01 02:09:00
Well folks, it's been an interesting few days here at the Hacienda. And, inspired by an epic session at "The Secret Spot" this morning, a response to a rant by UG and several large cocktails containing more than their fair share of Absolut, well, I think I need to set some things straight.First off, yes - most people are assholes. That's why you are not friends with everyone. In fact, it's why you are friends with almost nobody; not because there is anything inherently wrong with YOU (although there probably is) but because you are only friends with people who are a lot like you, and, given the odds, the chances are few and far between that you will ever meet someone who shares your love of miniature schnauzers, the History Channel and crack cocaine. But it does, occasioanlly, happen. And - occasionally - the result is you make a friend. But most times the people you meet are insipid assholes who you could care less about, and why would it be any different if you were a cop? Hell...

Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Southern CaliforniaLooks OK, but Jeff from Ridershack was getting out as I was pulling up and he said it sucked.I don't know if he was kidding or not, but even though it looks peaky and with nice conditions I did not see any long rides.I will defer to Jeff who, after all, was actually in the water, and say it blows.About 10 out total, some street parking still around and perfect conditions.Well, the boyos were out in force this morning. Here they are as I stepped onto the pier to get the surf pics.So I went out, took my pics, and headed back to my car when Christian calls me over. "Hey Matt!" he yells. I head over, certain that he is going to ask me for beer money...again. But, to my surprise, he tells me a very strange story."So guess who came over and gave me a printout of your story about me having immunity from the cops down on the boardwalk?" he asked me."Warren Buffet?""Huh? Who the hell is that?""Never mind - who was it?""The Lieutenant of...

Venice Surf Report 05/29/08 This Is What We Now Own
2008-05-29 17:07:00
Wow - looks really, really good. Peaky, waist to chest high swell that is breaking up and down the beach and absolutely perfect conditions to go with it. Brilliant sunshine, light offshores, sheet glass surface; it's about as good as Venice gets at this size.4-5 out on either side, street parking still available but hey - if you gotta pay the $3 to get in the pay lot believe me, it will be worth it.What are you waiting for? Go already!OK, so as you may know, the Fed has been accepting non-liquid securities that no rational person would touch as collateral for loans consisting of U.S. Treasuries. The resason why is that banks need to use leverage to make money; if they pledge $100 worth of securities with someone they can use that to borrow $1000, for a 10 to 1 leverage ratio. And that is what has kept the economy going for a long time. But that has all changed in the last year as banks and dealers are requiring higher levels of collateral, or, to put it another way, you might be abl...
Venice Surf Report? Not Today
2008-05-28 19:39:00
Boss is in town so no surf report today, and to be honest this whole thing is getting old. I like checking it in the morning but on days like today when I can't do it I feel guilty and then I check my stats and I see that a few hundred have looked and been disappointed so I don't know....I am thinking of bailing. However, that is not what my post is about today. No, today I will tell you about a little encounter I had with Christian last night as I was finishing my walk on the beach. He and his friends were making an early appearance at their new campsite (not to be disclosed here, so tough luck, cops) and he seemed a little loopy, even for Christian."So, Christian, what have you been up to?" I asked."Oh you know, the same 'ol same 'ol. I did just eat threee hits of acid about an hour ago.""No shit? Got anymore?" I asked. After all, few things are more fun than a spur of the moment psychedelic journey into the depths of your brain cells and listening to them pop, especially when it...
Venice Hotel Crush: Albergo Guerrato
2008-05-27 18:59:00
Albergo Guerrato, pension Calle drio la Scimia 240/a San Polo, Venice Doubles € 100-140  We first fell in love with Albergo Guerrato because of its location. Just a short walk from the Rialto Bridge, it holds a coveted place in the lovely San Polo area of Venice. But, then there was the ambiance. The Guerrato is an ex-convent, whose beginnings date to the 1200s.  Today, the owners seem to be decorating decidedly less ‘convent’ than ‘Dolce & Gabbana atelier’ —as our EC reviewer, Annie Shapero, said of her last visit. Rooms are fit for kings, queens, and anyone with a taste for antiques. Most rooms have oriental rugs, lavish furnishings, and beautifully carved windows. When you’ve tired of the indoor ambiance, step outside where the hipster nightlife surrounding Guerrato will keep you satiated. Read the complete review or see all budget hotel picks in Venice.

Venice Surf Report Surf Conditions Southern California Free Surf ReportLooking pretty damn weak out there. If you saw it yesterday then you've seen it today; conditions are much better with brilliant sun, warm temps and offshore winds, but let's face it, a knee high wave is a knee high wave. So, if you must go, bring every bit of lumber you can muster - you will need it. One out north, none out south, plenty of parking and the beach in surprisingly good shape given the holiday weekend just come and gone. And if you didn't see it, you missed a pretty cool flyover yesterday of a C-17 Globemaster that came down Washington Blvd right at noon yesterday. It came in at about 200 ft. and when it was maybe a couple hundred yards offshore banked hard right and hit the gas and climbed out flying along Santa Monica. Very, very cool. So, today starts a new experiment. I don't want to give away all the details just yet, but it involves doing more writing in the evenings and getting the reports u...
Review: One Knight in Venice
2008-05-26 11:01:00
One Knight in Veniceby Tori PhillipsOne touch of Venus was nothing compared to the magic in the hands of Jessica Leonardo. The mysterious signorina was a woman unlike any Francis Bardolph had ever known, for she alone could make him face his most dangerous secrets – and still have hope for her love!Though Sir Francis played the man of leisure, Jessica saw through his disguise. The man was dangerous – in ways that thrilled the private places of her heart. But would his desire still run hot when her true self was revealed – and her secret shame unmasked?I adored this story of the passionate but physically flawed Jessica Leonardo and the lost, lonely knight Francis Bardolph who falls for her. Francis, an English spy working in Venice, originally goes to Jessica, a healer, to relieve his sore shoulder. Her strong fingers massage away his pain, and her oils and ointments soothe his physical hurt, but her intuition also sees that this young knight is nursing a broken heart. Fr...

Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Southern CaliforniaUgh. Forget it. Basically Victory at Sea from the Southeast, and even though there is some swell in the water finding a corner would be like finding Christian sober: it just ain't gonna happen. There are still a few out for some odd reason, and to make it all really nice it is about 50 degrees, overcast and drizzling. Sounds like fun to me. And as for this weekend, well, the models right now say Saturday is gpong to be the best of the bunch, and they are calling for surf of 1-3 ft. which basically means it should suck.Oh well. And have you looked at SKF today? I did. Up to $113.00 now.Oh, and in related news, existing home sales fell AGAIN and prices are down 8% from April of last year, and this according to the National Association of Realtwhores, who perpetually lie. So when they say it's down a little it probably means it's down a bunch.I would still buy SKF if you have the stomach - it's still 25% below it's high from Se...
Venice Surf Report 05/22/08 Mozillo Screws Up
2008-05-22 17:24:00
Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Venice Beach CANice day, except for the waves.Yesterday's winds kicked up some windswell, but again, we cannot catch a break at Venice. Coming off a negative low at 5:50 am has everything drained out, and the waist to chest high windswell just isn't liking it. There are a few out, but more checking and bailing, and I saw exactly one ride in 10 minutes. Maybe later as the tide comes up, but I bet we get more winds. Keep the 'ol fingers crossed for the weekend.Parking about gone, 5-6 out total, nice day on tap, bring on the weekend.So. Yesterday there was a story making the rounds where Angelo Mozillo, CEO of Countrywide, and meaning to send it to the right people in the firm, hit the reply instead of the forward button when he got an email from a borrower begging for help with his loan. The full story is here, but the gist of it is some dude - who states that he has been in his house 16 years - claims that he didn't understand the loan when he t...

Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Venice BeachHmm. Big but pretty much blown out.Solid, steady short period windswell but noy, that's some windswell. It is in the head high+ range but we cannot catch a break in Venice condition wise. Winds are already onshore at 5-7 kts. and freshening, so if you are reading this now, well, you are probably already shit outta luck.Bummer.There are a few out taking a beating and snagging the occasional nice ride, but again, the onshore wind is really doing a number. 2-3 out south, 3-4 out north, not much parking and a nice, albeit windy, day on tap.So yesterday I was out taking a walk in the 39th installment of trying to be slightly less obese when I go to Mex in June, and my walks take me out to the end of the jetty which serves as the entrance to the Marina in Marina Del Rey.As I was almost out to the end I hear a boat with the engines gunned and turn around to see who would be stupid enough to fly past the numerous buoy markers that are clearly...
Venice Surf Report 05/20/08 The Meltdown Begins
2008-05-20 16:50:00
Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Venice BeachEh - needs more water. There is definitely some swell in the water this morning, but it does not appear to like Venice at the moment. The waist to chest high S lines that are coming through are hitting the outer shelf and jacking up and dumping over, and until there is more water to help them break a bit slower it will continue walled and dumpy. There were a few corners here and there, but given the June gloom (get the fuck out of here before the weekend!), the starnge new, diarrhea brown coloration of the water and the general junkiness looking of the lineup well, I'd have to say it is, at best, a coin flip.2-3 out on either side, some parking left, winds calm but look onshore, cool and overcast.Well, the fat is offically in the fire folks. Today's PPI number is out and it is not good. As you may know, this number represents the prices producers are paid for their goods, and is considered a leading economic indicator for inflation. A...

Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Venice BeachNo pics today, was in the office at 6 am and I learned long ago that taking pictures in the dark is far less rewarding than you might think. So, no surf update, but if it is anything like yesterday morning it will be fun.And yesterday morning was definitely the apex of the weekend. Me and Jeff from Ridershack and a couple of our bros got toghether and paddled out south of the pier yesterday and let me tell you, it was a fucking blast. The morning got off to kind of a weird start as there were about 5 firetrucks / ambulances in front of Jeff's place when I went to pick him up. Turns out his next door neighbor died or something (I didn't really get all the details) so no damage done to anyone I knew, but still, seeing the Medical Examiner at 7 am on a Sunday morning is not exactly a cheery start. But we did finally get out there, and it was just one of those magical mornings that people who don't surf will never understand. Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Venice CAWow - looks good. A bit small, but definitely fun.Swell is in the waist high + range, some bigger, some smaller, but fun peaky windswell corners are being had by all. Gorgeous day, lots of sun and sublime conditions. No reason not to paddle out today. 5-6 out on either side, more suiting up, parking oddly available, light offshore/calm winds, going down to a +.65 low at 12:28 pm, should be good until 11 am or so.So, yesterday Photo Matt wrote in and asked "where are the boyos?", and it occured to me that I didn't know. I knew that they had more or less been run off the end of the pier by the cops / Boston "The Retard" Dawna and a lack of purchasing ability at the "little fucking Korean", but I wanted to know for myself, so I set out yesterday to find them.As you may recall the last time I saw them was far down the boardwalk in Venice, about 300 yards past he Sidewalk cafe. Not too bad, I guess. There are some corners out there in the waist high +/- range, but it is a little junky and weak looking. And it is raining. Or at least drizzling. So, who knows? Call it a coin flip. At the very least you should have plenty of room if you do make it out this morning. Rain/drizzle, calm winds, foggy, gray, a good morning to sleep in, two out north, two out south, 0 ft. low tide coming up at 11:00 am. so hit it before then. So, I am driving to work this morning and in front of me is an SUV that is weaving all over the place, drifting in and out of the left lane, and I can see the drivers head bobbing up and down and weaving left and right. The driver, obviously, is doing something besides driving. At first I think they must be dialing a phone, but this keeps up all the way from the start of the 10 to the La Cienega exit, a distance of about 10 miles. Finally a spot opens up on the right and I go around. And what do I see? Well, luckily I had my camera, and a pictur...

Venice Surf Report 05/09/08 Finally Friday / Farting Forcefully

Lather, Rinse, RepeatYou know the deal. Low tide, shitty conditions, blah blah blah.A few out, some parking left, keep your fingers crossed for the S swell that is supposed to show tomorrow.I had to dish out a little escalator etiquette this morning.Normally I take the parking garage elevator from where I park right up to the level where I catch the tower elevator that takes me up to the XXth floor. But not today - no, today I took the escalators up to the sub-lobby so I could hit the little convenience store on the way up. Normally not a big deal, and not something I would write about. But as usual (or so it seems lately) I ran into a total douchebag, this time in the form of some skinny, severe looking 40 yr. old white chick who gets right behind me as I stand on the escalator. So, as we are going up the first flight she is quite literally one step behind me, so close I swear I could feel her breathing on me as we go up. But what really pissed me off is that as we get off flight on...

Rumble: When you think of Venice: Food...

Many visitors to Italy will appreciate the food. Not the usual spaghetti or pizza, but the real Italian food: Italy excels in simple but real tasty food. I sell my soul for the sea food, prosciutto (raw ham), the cheeses,...Visiting Venice last weekend, reminded me that this town has its own traditions. Some of it, is embraced into Italian traditions, like tiramisu (which was 'born' in this region). Some say "gelato", Italian ice cream is better in Venice than anywhere else in Italy:.But the pastry shops, while not as abundant as those in Vienna, in the quality, taste and variety, are not to be found anywhere else in Italy: View the slideshow of all my Venice pictures.Check out other posts on the Road about Venice.
Rumble: When you think of Venice: Glass art
2008-05-08 23:19:00
One more think many people think of, when talking about Venice: Venetian glass..!Venetian glass making tradition goes way back, but only got really known when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction to the city?s mostly wood buildings, ordered glass makers to move their foundries to the island of Murano, in the Venetian archipelago in 1291. Murano's glass makers were soon the island?s most prominent citizens. By the 14th century, glass makers were allowed to wear swords, enjoyed immunity from prosecution by the Venetian state and found their daughters married into Venice?s most affluent families. The catch was that glass makers weren't allowed to leave the Republic.Murano?s glass makers held a monopoly on quality glass making for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enameled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Rumble: When you think of Venice: Carnival
2008-05-08 23:03:00
What else do you think of when hearing "Venice"? Pumuckl commented in a previous post saying: "Carnival"!And she is right! The carnival of Venice was first recorded in 1268, and has been a long tradition since then. Strolling through the alleys of Venice, we came across many shops where they sold the typical Venetian masks, made in leather or with the original papier-mâché technique. The original masks were rather simple in design and decoration. They often had a symbolic and practical function. Nowadays, most of them are made with the application of gesso and gold leaf and are all hand-painted using natural feathers and gems to decorate.A photo impression:View the slideshow of all my Venice pictures.Check out other posts on the Road about Venice.
